Packers release CB Quinton Dunbar from practice squad

The Packers released CB Quinton Dunbar and signed edge rusher Aaron Adeoye to the practice squad.

Quinton Dunbar’s stay in Green Bay didn’t even last a week.

The Green Bay Packers released the veteran cornerback from the practice squad on Tuesday. He was originally signed to the practice squad on Wednesday of last week.

The Packers needed to make room to sign edge rusher Aaron Adeoye to the practice squad. Adeoye (6-6, 260) was in town for a tryout on Monday. An undrafted free agent from Southeast Missouri State, Adeoye spent his first two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, mostly on the practice squad.

Injuries might have forced the Packers’ hand. The cornerback group got an encouraging debut from Rasul Douglas on Sunday in Chicago, and Kevin King is considered day to day in his recovery from a shoulder injury, meaning he could return Sunday against Washington. However, the outlook is worse at outside linebacker, where Za’Darius Smith, Chauncey Rivers and Randy Ramsey are on injured reserve and now Preston Smith is dealing with an oblique injury.

Adeoye joins Tipa Galeai as outside linebackers on the Packers practice squad. He will wear No. 98.

Packers will sign CB Quinton Dunbar to practice squad

The Packers are expected to sign CB Quinton Dunbar to the team’s practice squad.

Quinton Dunbar’s visit to Green Bay on Tuesday will end in a signing with the Packers.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Packers are expected to sign Dunbar to the team’s practice squad.

The addition provides instant depth at cornerback for the Packers, who are dealing with shoulder injuries of various degrees to starters Jaire Alexander and Kevin King.

Dunbar, an undrafted free agent in 2015, has played in 64 career games over five seasons in the NFL. He was with Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry in Washington for his first two seasons in the NFL, and he most recently played in Seattle for the Seahawks in 2020.

Dunbar has defended 40 career passes, including 10 interceptions. He intercepted a career-high four passes during an impressive season with Washington in 2019. He was shipped to the Seahawks for a fifth-round pick in 2020.

By signing Dunbar to the practice squad, the Packers will keep a roster spot open and provide an opportunity to elevate the veteran cornerback twice to the gameday roster. With Alexander on injured reserve and King’s status uncertain, Dunbar could be on the field for the Packers sooner rather than later.

Veteran free agent CB Quinton Dunbar visits Packers

The Packers hosted a free agent visit for veteran cornerback Quinton Dunbar.

The Green Bay Packers hosted veteran free agent cornerback Quinton Dunbar for a visit on Tuesday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Dunbar, an undrafted free agent out of Florida, has played in 64 career games since entering the NFL in 2015. He played his first five seasons in Washington, including his first two under current Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry.

The Packers may need more veteran help at cornerback, especially if Kevin King (shoulder) is out for an extended period of time. All-Pro Jaire Alexander is already on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Over 64 career games, Dunbar has 40 pass breakups and 10 interceptions. He last played in the regular season with the Seattle Seahawks during the 2020 season, appearing in six games.

The Detroit Lions signed Dunbar to a one-year deal in April but released him in August. He was most recently on the practice squad of the Arizona Cardinals.

Dunbar (6-2, 197) produced a terrific season with Washington in 2019, delivering four interceptions and four pass breakups while allowing a passer rating of 56.9, per Pro Football Focus.

Over his entire career, Dunbar has allowed 12 touchdown passes and a passer rating of 84.7. He’s played the majority of his snaps on the perimeter during his NFL career.

The Packers recently signed Rasul Douglas off the practice squad of the Cardinals. The team also has rookies Eric Stokes and Shemar Jean-Charles and veteran Isaac Yiadom at cornerback.

Cardinals sign 4 to practice squad, including CB Quinton Dunbar, OL Michal Menet

They made a flurry of moves on the practice squad after three players have been signed to the active roster in the last week. 7th-round pick Michael Menet returns.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few roster moves dealing with the 53-man roster, including the signing of cornerback Antonio Hamilton from the practice squad to the 53-man squad. With that move and the signing of two offensive linemen from the practice squad to the active roster over the weekend, the Cardinals had a few vacancies on their practice squad.

They announced four player signings to the unit and the release of one.

They released cornerback Mazzi Wilkins, whom they added just last week.

They added three offensive linemen and a veteran cornerback. The players they added are below.

CB Quinton Dunbar signing with Cardinals

After a workout, Dunbar is signing with the team, although it might just be the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals are apparently adding veteran cornerback help. After he was scheduled to have a workout, Quinton Dunbar is signing with the team, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The signing did not happen before the NFL released its transaction report, so we do not know what other roster moves the Cardinals are making to accommodate him.

Dunbar has been in the league since 2015 when he entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Florida.

The 6-2, 202-lb corner played five seasons in Washington and then was traded in 2020 to the Seattle Seahawks. He signed in the offseason with the Detroit Lions as a free agent but was cut in August.

He has 10 career interceptions, with a career-high four in 2019.

He has played in 64 career games, starting 31.

He is talented but also has had issues with durability. In six NFL seasons, he has been on injured reserve twice and never has played a full 16-game season.

Rapoport’s tweet suggests that Dunbar is signing to join the team on the active roster. That might not be the case.

According to Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s John Gambadoro, it is likely a signing to the practice squad.

A practice squad signing would mean he would have time to learn the defense but already be with the team should the need to promote him arise.

Cardinals to bring is free agent CB Quinton Dunbar for workout Tuesday

The veteran cornerback is reportedly scheduled for a Tuesday workout in Arizona.

The Arizona Cardinals regularly bring in players on Tuesdays for workouts. It is sometimes to fill an immediate need and other times it is to build a list of go-to players should a need arise.

Later on Tuesday when the NFL transactions list comes out, we will see who were all those players, but one veteran cornerback is scheduled.

According to PFF NFL reporter Doug Kyed, the Cardinals were scheduled to bring in cornerback Quinton Dunbar for a visit Tuesday.

Dunbar played five seasons with the Washington Football Team and then last season with the Seattle Seahawks. He signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions this year but released him in August.

He is talented but has struggled to stay healthy in his career. He has yet to play a full season without getting hurt. He played in only six games in 2020 for the Seahawks.

He is 6-2 and 202 lbs and has started 31 games in his NFL career.

It would seem unlikely he would be someone the Cardinals would sign to the 53-man roster, but he could be added to the practice squad so he can work into the defensive system. They did that last season with veteran cornerback Pricne Amukamara and signed Rasul Douglas this season, although Amukamara never made it to the active roster last season and Douglas so far has not this year.

Lions options for replacing Ifeatu Melifonwu at cornerback

It’s not a good time to need CB help around the NFL, but the Lions are in need with injuries to Melifonwu and OIkudah

Already down one starting cornerback, the Detroit Lions suffered another significant blow in the Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Rookie CB Ifeatu Melifonwu left Monday night’s game with a lower-body injury that head coach Dan Campbell deemed significant enough to keep Melifonwu out for some time.

Melifonwu rose up to the starting lineup to replace the injured Jeff Okudah, who is out for the year with a torn Achilles suffered in Week 1. Now the Lions are faced with replacing the replacement, no easy task.

Internal options

Bobby Price took over on Monday night in Green Bay. He’s a work in progress, still converting from safety in his second NFL season. Undrafted rookie Jerry Jacobs saw limited action as well and notably committed an obvious defensive pass interference penalty.

Another rookie, AJ Parker, was the bright spot in the secondary in both games so far. He has primarily been in the slot but could kick outside. The Lions do have veteran slot CB Nickell Robey-Coleman on the practice squad. Signing him to the active 53-man roster seems a foregone conclusion.

The Lions did bring in veteran Daryl Worley to the practice squad late last week. He’s another option to get called up to the active roster now that Worley has had time to settle in a little bit. Detroit also has youngster Parnell Motley on the practice squad at CB.

Quinton Dunbar

The Lions acknowledged they were looking at bringing Dunbar back into the den last week, but nothing has materialized to this point. Dunbar signed with the Lions in the offseason and was a projected starter at outside CB before a personal issue forced him away from the team.

Dunbar has a workout scheduled with the Buffalo Bills, so if the Lions are going to act here, it needs to happen swiftly.

External options

The current crop of unsigned veteran free agent CBs isn’t great, but there are a few who merit at least a workout to see if they might fit.

Richard Sherman has made it known he’s ready to return to action. His offseason legal issues complicate matters for the Lions and head coach Dan Campbell’s “no turd” policy, and Sherman, now 33, has battled injury issues for several seasons as well.

Darqueze Dennard carries some name-value recognition as a former first-round pick (Bengals in 2014) from Michigan State. He’s not played like a first-round talent but does have experience and can play either inside or outside.

Another former first-round pick, Gareon Conley, is also still out there. Conley hasn’t played since 2019, spending 2020 on injured reserve. If the 26-year-old is healthy, and that’s a big “if”, he could help in a pinch like the Lions find themselves in right now.

Damarious Randall is yet another former first-rounder (Green Bay in 2015) who could help. He’s primarily played safety in his NFL career but played CB while with Seattle over the summer and has a cornerback background.

Report: Bills working out free agent Quinton Dunbar

Report: #Bills working out free agent Quinton Dunbar:

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly working out a veteran cornerback, one day following their Week 2 blowout win over the Miami Dolphins.

According to Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus, free agent Quinton Dunbar is working out for the Bills:

If the Bills do workout Dunbar, that will be confirmed by the NFL’s transaction wire later in the day or at some point this week depending on when the workout takes place.

It’s unclear why the Bills are bringing in Dunbar at this time. Against the Dolphins, the only cornerback to go down with injury was Levi Wallace, however, he was only dealing with a cramp, the team announced.

Because of that, it’s unclear if Wallace’s injury was potentially more serious or if the Bills might just want to upgrade their roster or practice squad. At the end of training camp, Buffalo also only kept five cornerbacks on their final roster.

Dunbar was released by Detroit earlier this offseason following some off-field circumstance. According to Lions Wire, Dunbar was with the team at the start of training camp but left for personal reasons.

After several days away that were excused, he was released. He was expected to be a starter with Detroit prior to being cut.

The Lions are also one of the teams that have recently been interested in signing Dunbar.

Dunbar, a 2015 undrafted rookie signee of the Washington Football Team, found a stay on their roster until 2019. He then skipped town to the Seattle Seahawks last season where he put up a below average PFF grade of 47.7 in 2020.

Report: Lions have reached out to CB Quinton Dunbar

A report from the NFL Network indicates the Lions have reached out to CB Quinton Dunbar about a possible return to Detroit

The Detroit Lions are painfully thin at cornerback after losing top CB Jeff Okudah for the season. They’re even thinner on experience at the position.

The Lions could be looking to remedy both ills with one move. Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the team has approached veteran Quinton Dunbar about a possible return to Detroit.

Dunbar was with the team at the start of training camp but left for personal reasons. After several days away that were excused by head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions released Dunbar. He had been signed as a free agent and penciled in as one of the team’s starters at outside CB.

It’s interesting to note that Garafolo reports the team had already reached out to Dunbar before Okudah’s injury.

Detroit Lions waive former Gator Quinton Dunbar

Quinton Dunbar is a free agent again after being waived by the Detroit Lions prior the their first preseason game.

The Detroit Lions waived former Gator Quinton Dunbar Thursday after just four months with the team.

Dunbar played for Florida from 2010-2014 under Urban Meyer and Will Muschamp. Undrafted as a receiver, Dunbar signed his first NFL contract with the Washington Football Team and converted to defensive back. After establishing himself in the league, Washington traded Dunbar to Seattle and his production waned. This Lions stint was supposed to be his chance to rebuild his reputation.

He “missed a significant portion of training camp due to personal reasons,” according to ESPN, and Detroit recently Nickell Robey-Coleman in hope of revitalizing the secondary. Despite Lions coach Dan Campbell saying the team is in communication with Dunbar, he no longer is in Detroit’s 2021 plans. Dunbar’s cut comes a day before the Lions play the Bills for their first preseason game.

Dunbar had off-the-field troubles in 2020 related to the DeAndre Baker armed robbery charges. Evidence revealed a payoff possibly involving Dunbar but nothing ever came of it and he was not charged. There’s no indication that his waiving this week is related.

Over six seasons, Dunbar has 10 interceptions and a sack. If everything clears up for him personally, he could easily make a return to an NFL roster.
