Broncos OL Quinn Bailey fractures ankle, will have surgery

Broncos offensive lineman Quinn Bailey was carted off the practice field Wednesday with an apparent right leg injury.

Story update: After practice, Broncos coach Sean Payton announced that Quinn Bailey fractured his ankle. Bailey will undergo surgery. See our original post below.

Denver Broncos versatile backup offensive lineman Quinn Bailey was carted off the practice field during Wednesday’s training camp session.

Bailey went down during 9-on-7 drills with what appeared to be a “gruesome lower right leg injury,” according to the Denver Post‘s Parker Gabriel.

Bailey was carried onto a cart with a “heavy brace” on his right leg, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. He was then loaded into an ambulance, presumably to be taken to a local hospital.

Bailey, 28, originally joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2019. He bounced between the practice squad and active roster from 2019-2022 before locking down a spot on the 53-man roster last summer.

Bailey is a versatile backup swing tackle/guard who dressed for all 17 games last fall. He served as an injury fill-in starter for one game in each of the last two seasons. Bailey was one of the favorites to serve as the team’s top backup swing tackle in 2024.

With Bailey sidelined, Denver’s remaining backup tackles include Alex Palczewski, Frank Crum, Matt Peart and Demontrey Jacobs.

Broncos roster series: No. 75, OL Quinn Bailey

Quinn Bailey is projected to serve as a backup swing tackle/guard for the Broncos this season.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, No. 75.

Before the Broncos: Bailey (6-6, 323 pounds) spent five years at Arizona State, emerging as a full-time starter in his third season. Bailey started 34 games during his time with the Sun Devils, playing primarily as a right tackle. He also spent time at guard. Bailey earned honorable mention Pac-12 All-Conference recognition in his final season in 2018.

Broncos tenure: After going undrafted, Bailey signed with Denver as a college free agent in 2019. He bounced between the practice squad and active roster from 2019-2022 before winning a spot on the 53-man roster last summer. Bailey dressed for all 17 games in 2023 as a backup swing tackle/guard. He made one fill-in start in each of the last two seasons.

Bailey has been with the team since 2019, but the NFL considers him a “third-year” player because he only has two accrued seasons (dressing for six or more regular season games in the same season).

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Bailey is not expected to win a starting job at training camp, but he should be a top candidate to serve as a backup swing tackle/guard in 2024.

Report: Broncos re-sign OL Quinn Bailey to 1-year deal

The Broncos have re-signed offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, according to the Denver Post. He’s a backup swing guard/tackle.

The Denver Broncos have re-signed backup offensive lineman Quinn Bailey to a one-year contract, according to the Denver Post‘s Parker Gabriel.

The Broncos opted not to place a restricted free agent tender on Bailey that would have paid him $2.985 million in 2024. Instead, Denver is re-signing the offensive lineman for $1.055 million, the league minimum salary for a player with three years of experience.

Bailey’s deal will pay him less than he would have received with an RFA tender, but it does represent an increase from his $940,000 salary in 2023.

Bailey is the third in-house free agent the Broncos have re-signed so far, joining linebacker Jonas Griffith and wide receiver Michael Bandy. Griffith and Bandy were exclusive rights free agents who received one-year tenders worth $985,000 and $915,000, respectively.

In addition to bringing back Griffith, Bandy and Bailey, Denver is also working to re-sign safety P.J. Locke. After restructuring wide receiver Tim Patrick’s contract on Friday, the Broncos are now under the salary cap.

Broncos expected to re-sign offensive lineman Quinn Bailey

The Broncos are expected to re-sign offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, but he might not receive a restricted free agent tender.

The Denver Broncos are expected to re-sign offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson, but the method used to re-sign Bailey remains uncertain.

Bailey, 28, is a restricted free agent, so Denver could place a one-year tender on him worth $2.985 million. That would be a notable increase from the $940,000 Bailey earned in 2023, and perhaps too rich for the cap-poor Broncos.

Alternatively, Denver could not place a tender on Bailey and hope to re-sign him for less than the $2.985 million tender price. Doing that would allow Bailey to test free agency, but no team would sign a backup to a big contract.

The league minimum for a player with three years of experience like Bailey is $1.055 million, less than the tender but more than last year’s salary. Perhaps there’s a middle ground the two sides can reach to get a deal done.

Bailey has dressed for 25 games over the last two season, earning two starts. He is a backup swing guard/tackle who originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2019.

6 in-house free agents Broncos should re-sign in 2024

The Broncos should make re-signing safety P.J. Locke a priority during NFL free agency.

The NFL’s free agency negotiating window will open on March 11. If the Denver Broncos do not give contract extensions to their in-house free agents before that date, other teams will be allowed to negotiate deals with Denver’s looming free agents.

The new league year and the official start of NFL free agency will kick off on March 13 and all signings can become official on that date.

The Broncos seem likely to lose center Lloyd Cushenberry. Denver has to clear salary cap space and Cushenberry is expected to get a big deal on the open market.

Broncos inside linebacker Josey Jewell is another in-house free agent to keep an eye on. Jewell had a $7.22 million salary cap hit last year and Denver might not be willing to commit that much cap space again in 2024.

While losing both Cushenberry and Jewell seems possible (maybe even probable), the team has a few other contributors who should be easier to re-sign. Here’s a quick list of six in-house free agents the Broncos should try to re-sign in March.

Broncos made 6 roster moves on Thursday

After setting an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Broncos made six more roster moves on Thursday.

After setting an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Denver Broncos continued making roster moves on Thursday.

First, the team placed cornerback K’Waun Williams (ankle), defensive back P.J. Locke (leg) and offensive tackle Alex Palczewski (hand) on injured reserve. Those three players will now have to sit out at least the first four games of the 2023 season before being eligible to return to the active roster.

After placing those three players on IR, the Broncos re-signed defensive lineman Mike Purcell, cornerback Fabian Moreau and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey. Because they are veterans, those players did not have to pass through waivers after being cut by Denver on Tuesday.

See a recap of the team’s Thursday roster moves below.

Broncos roster series: No. 75, OL Quinn Bailey

Entering his fifth year with the Broncos, Quinn Bailey will compete for a backup swing tackle/guard spot at training camp this summer.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, No. 75.

Before the Broncos: Bailey (6-6, 323 pounds) played college football at Arizona State, making 43 appearances (34 starts) with the Sun Devils. He earned honorable mention All-Pacific-12 Conference recognition as a redshirt senior before entering the NFL draft.

Broncos tenure: Bailey went undrafted in 2019 and signed with the Broncos as a college free agent. After beginning the season on Denver’s practice squad, Bailey was promoted to the active roster for the final game of his rookie season.

Bailey spent most of the 2020 season on the Broncos’ practice squad as well, making one appearance in his second season. He then played in four games in 2021. Last year, Bailey dressed for eight games and earned the first start of his career.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: Behind Cam Fleming, Bailey will likely be one of the top candidates to serve as a backup swing tackle in 2023. Bailey can also play as a guard and that positional flexibility will help his chances of making the team. Bailey won’t be a lock, but he should have decent odds to make the 53-man roster as a versatile backup this summer.

Broncos have signed both of their ERFA players

LB Jonas Griffith and OL Quinn Bailey signed their ERFA tenders. The Broncos have room for 18 more players with about $7M in cap space.

The Denver Broncos have signed both of their exclusive rights free agents to one-year contracts.

It was just a formality because tendered ERFA players have no negotiating power under the collective bargaining agreement, but inside linebacker Jonas Griffith signed his deal in March and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey signed his contract when he reported for the offseason program on Tuesday.

Because he has two years of experience, Griffith will earn $940,000 this season. Bailey, who has just one accrued season, will earn $870,000. The two players now count against the team’s salary cap and 90-man offseason roster.

Denver also placed a one-year ERFA tender on punter Corliss Waitman last month, but he did not sign it immediately like Griffith. The Broncos later signed punter Riley Dixon and rescinded Waitman’s tender, making him a free agent.

NFL Players Association totals indicate that Denver has $7,792,451 in remaining salary cap space. The Broncos currently hold five draft picks and they have 18 open spots on the roster. After the draft, Denver will fill the 90-man offseason roster with college free agent signings.

Broncos place ERFA tenders on LB Jonas Griffith and two other players

The Broncos have placed one-year, ERFA tenders on LB Jonas Griffith and two other players.

The Denver Broncos are bringing back three of their players who were eligible for one-year exclusive rights free agent tenders this spring.

The Broncos have placed one-year, ERFA tenders on inside linebacker Jonas Griffith, punter Corliss Waitman and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

In the NFL, ERFAs are players with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expiring contract. They are eligible for one-year, league-minimum contracts.

For Griffith and Waitman, who have two years of experience, the tender will be worth $940,000 this season. Bailey, who has just one accrued season, will earn $870,000 this year.

Denver declined to pick up the ERFA tender of pass rusher Jonathan Kongbo, according to Klis. Kongbo will now become an unrestricted free agent.

The Broncos’ three players who did have their tenders exercised — Griffith, Waitman and Bailey — will not be allowed to negotiate with other teams.

We are tracking all of the team’s free agency moves on Broncos Wire.

2 Broncos players elevated for Sunday; 1 player fined by NFL

The Broncos promoted OL Quinn Bailey to the 53-man roster and elevated OL Netane Muti and LB Harvey Langi to the game-day roster.

The Denver Broncos made several practice squad moves ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

First, the Broncos promoted offensive lineman Quinn Bailey from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Denver then elevated fellow offensive lineman Netane Muti and inside linebacker Harvey Langi to the game-day roster from the practice squad.

Bailey is now on the active roster while Muti and Langi are set to revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Bailey and Muti can provide more depth on the offensive line this week if guard Dalton Risner (shoulder/back) is not cleared to play. Risner is listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.

Elsewhere on the injury front, the Broncos announced Saturday that defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike has been added to the injury report due to an illness. Uwazurike is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.

Broncos buzz: Denver linebacker Alex Singleton was fined $6,194 for an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Baltimore Ravens, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Singleton totaled 16 tackles in Baltimore.
