Colorado men’s basketball: Nique Clifford, Quincy Allen enter transfer portal

Nique Clifford and Quincy Allen have joined Lawson Lovering in the transfer portal, per Pat Rooney of BuffZone

Following a season that concluded with a loss to Utah Valley in the NIT on Sunday, a trio of Buffs has opted to enter the transfer portal.

In addition to center Lawson Lovering, forward Nique Clifford and guard Quincy Allen have added their names to the portal as well, according to Pat Rooney of BuffZone.

Allen, a redshirt freshman, averaged 1.6 points and 0.5 rebounds per game over 11 contests this season in a reserve role.

For Clifford, he averaged 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds as a consistent starter in 2022-2023. However, he wasn’t a consistent scoring option in the lineup with Tristan da Silva and KJ Simpson carrying the bulk of the load, so Clifford could go to a program where he would be more of a top option, as he has shown glimpses of being a strong offensive player.

It remains to be seen how head coach Tad Boyle and Colorado will fill Allen’s scholarship spot, but a replacement for Clifford is more clear as five-star recruit Cody Williams will be coming to Boulder next season and he figures to take a starting spot.

Now healthy, Quincy Allen is a dangerous weapon for CU men’s basketball

Tad Boyle believes that Quincy Allen’s athleticism could drop some jaws this season

Now healthy following a hip injury that sidelined him last season. Quincy Allen is back to being arguably the most athletic player on the Colorado men’s basketball roster.

Yes, we have yet to see him in full game action, but from everything I’ve seen and heard, the 6-foot-8, 198-pound guard/forward can do most everything on the court and even drop a few jaws according to Tad Boyle.

I got a chance to chat with Allen during Colorado basketball’s media day on Wednesday and he was of course thrilled that the Buffs are just weeks away from their exhibition against Nebraska.

“I’m excited to get out there and just start playing again because it’s been a little minute,” Allen said. “But I’m definitely excited just to get out there and show people what I can do.”

Allen added while watching on the sidelines last year, he learned to value his play on the defensive side of the ball, a typical consequence of playing for Boyle.

Boyle said that even though Allen is going into his second season with the program, he still views him as a freshman on the court. Allen’s skillset, though, doesn’t mimic many rookies.

“Quincy will make plays that just make your jaw drop,” Boyle said. “He’s so athletic, he’s so balanced and he can block shots.”

WATCH: Quincy Allen displays rejuvenated hops

WATCH: Quincy Allen’s hops are looking better than ever

Besides a handful of summer practices last year, the Buffs were unfortunate to lose Quincy Allen for the entirety of his freshman season. The former four-star recruit from Washington D.C. suffered a hip injury soon before the season began.

But things are quickly looking better for Allen, including his hops.

On Wednesday, the Colorado men’s basketball Twitter account posted a video of Allen during a recent practice receiving a bounce pass from Julian Hammond III and emphatically slamming it home. With the Buffs returning just 39% of last season’s scoring production, it was great to see Allen back and looking like an instant contributor.

Allen had even told BuffZone’s Pat Rooney in April that after much work in the weight room while being injured, he is jumping higher than when he first arrived in Boulder.

This practice highlight would agree:

Quincy Allen returns to the court for Buffs

A healthy Quincy Allen could be huge for the Buffs next season

The Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team watched quite a few players depart after the season. Elijah Parquet transferred to UNLV, then Keeshawn Barthelemy transferred to Pac-12 rival Oregon.

Jabari Walker has declared for the NBA draft, and there could be more movement in the next couple of months.

But, Tad Boyle’s team did get some good news as they look ahead to the 2022-23 season.

According to Pat Rooney of BuffZone, Quincy Allen has been cleared for activities following a hip injury.

With spring drills coming soon, Allen is ready to go. (h/t Rooney).

“I’m feeling really good. It feels good to be back out here. I was always part of the team, but this makes you feel like part of the team more, being able to play with everybody. It’s a lot more fun. It’s such a relief to be healthy after these last six months. It was kind of tough, so this feels good.”

The four-star recruit and 2021 Gatorade Washington DC Player of the Year was expected to play a significant role for the Buffs in his first year in Boulder but didn’t suit up for a single game.

With the losses of Parquet, Barthelemy, Evan Battey and the likely departure of Walker, Allen’s presence will be a massive lift for the Buffs, especially with lofty expectations as Joe Lunardi had CU in his way-too-early bracketology.

Quincy Allen to miss entire freshman season following hip surgery

Quincy Allen will miss his entire freshman season following hip surgery

With less than a week until their first preseason practice, news broke that Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball freshman Quincy Allen will miss the entire season after undergoing hip surgery.

Pat Rooney of BuffZone released the news mid-day Thursday.

The 6-foot-7 freshman had been practicing with CU earlier in the summer but was sidelined by the injury during CU’s mid-August exhibition trip in Costa Rica. Allen was primed to give Colorado minutes at the three-spot.

A four-star recruit from Washington DC, Allen is a member of Colorado’s top-ranked freshman class in the Pac-12 according to 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 17 small forward recruit in 2021 by 247Sports and was last season’s Gatorade Washington DC Player of the Year.

Sophomores Tristan da Silva and Luke O’Brien will likely see increased time as a result of Allen’s absence. Expected four-spot starter Jabari Walker, who averaged 14.2 minutes last season, is also capable of playing the three-spot.
