Citrus Bowl provides LSU DE Sai’Vion Jones a chance for a breakout

LSU will need Jones to step up at edge rusher with BJ Ojulari opting out.

LSU will be without star pass rusher [autotag]B.J. Ojulari[/autotag] against Purdue as he opts out to prepare for the 2023 NFL draft.

As he has at points this year, expect [autotag]Sai’vion Jones[/autotag] to step into Ojulari’s role. Jones was one of LSU’s top players in the 2021 recruiting class and one of the best edge recruits in the country.

He didn’t see much time as a freshman, playing just 58 defensive snaps, but when Ojulari was in and out of the lineup in September this fall, there was an opportunity for Smith.

Stepping in against Southern, Jones totaled three pressures and a sack. He added sacks in week three and four too. On the year, Jones had 11 pressures and four sacks. At one point, he was one of the most efficient pass rushers in the SEC, but that production tailed off late in the season.

However, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] still highlighted Jones’ performance against Arkansas, which included a sack.

Jones’ pass rush win rate was just 7.4%, well below Ojulari’s mark of 18%. But Jones’ pass-rush productivity score of 8.0 ranked 11th among SEC edge rushers with at least 80 snaps.

He’s a guy that’s shown flashes, but hasn’t completely put it together. Going forward, LSU is needs Jones to take the next step. Ojulari, along with some members of the secondary, will be LSU’s biggest loss headed into 2023.

Pair that with the expected departure of [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag], and edge rusher is a need for LSU.

Jones is the most logical in-house option. There’s also [autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag], the talented freshman who took a redshirt this fall and played just two pass rush snaps.

LSU will be adding [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag], a five-star pass rusher from Baltimore, as well.

Wiggins and Womack are talented, but unproven. Jones has yet to prove himself to an extent too, but we know he is a capable SEC player.

An LSU team that expects to compete for a title is going to need more than a couple of freshmen pass rushers.

[autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] was elite coming after the quarterback, but his services will be needed at linebacker, and he isn’t your prototypical front player that can defend the run on the edge.

Jones will get his shot in the bowl game. A strong performance against Purdue would make coaches and fans feel a lot better about what LSU has in 2023.

Brian Kelly gives update on redshirting freshmen

Kelly gave an update on a couple of talented freshmen who didn’t see much action this fall.

[autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag] were critical pieces of Brian Kelly’s first signing class.

Wiggins was one of the top defensive line recruits in the country, and Davis-Robinson,  a cornerback, filled a position of significant need. Neither saw much action with both maintaining redshirts.

Kelly said the extra practices that come with a bowl game will be a good experience for the young guys. It’s not discussed much among fans, but coaches revel in these bowl practice periods.

After the regular season, veterans need some rest, and staffs have an opportunity to evaluate how the younger guys developed over the year. freshmen and sophomores can get a head-start on the 2023 position battles.

LSU will need Wiggins and Davis-Robinson to develop. The Tigers are set to lose a lot of production at defensive end and cornerback.

LSU’s 2022 high school class was small. Kelly didn’t have much time to recruit before signing day and much of that effort had to be spent on the transfer portal.

That makes it even more important that the guys LSU did sign, like Wiggins and Davis-Robinson, work out.

LSU Injury News: Tigers freshman defensive end out for Florida State game

Quency Wiggins was spotted on the sidelines on a scooter with a boot on his left foot.

LSU could have one of the best defensive lines in the SEC, if not the entire nation, in 2022. However, defensive coordinator Matt House’s group appears to be down a depth piece up front for the season-opener against Florida State on Sunday night.

True freshman defensive end [autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag] is not expected to play in this one after he was spotted on the sideline using a scooter with a boot on his left foot. The severity of his injury is unclear, but it seems he could be unavailable for the Tigers in the near future.

With Wiggins unavailable, LSU will rely on players like Saivion Jones, [autotag]Zavier Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]Desmond Little[/autotag] to provide depth behind starting edge players [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag].

A Baton Rouge native, Wiggins was a four-star recruit who attended nearby Madison Prep Academy. Ranking just outside of the national top-75 as a recruit, Wiggins was expected to contribute in the rotation as a true freshman.

However, it seems Tigers fans will have to wait to see his debut in the purple and gold.

Five freshmen most likely to see the field for LSU in 2022

Examining which of LSU’s newcomers will have a chance to make an immediate impact in 2022

With signing day now done, there is some clarity regarding what rosters may look like across college football in 2022.

It’s been a hectic couple of months all over the sport. With coaching changes, a flurry of transfers, and players declaring for the NFL draft. This off-season has provided more roster shakeup than any in recent memory.

That holds true for LSU as well.

Over the last couple of years, the previous coaching staff didn’t demonstrate much competence when it came to managing a roster. On top of that, coaching changes always lead to their own list of personnel shakeups.

There will be more moves to come throughout the spring and summer. It isn’t over yet. But the roster LSU has now should look close to the one it takes the field in the opener against Florida State.

All things considered, LSU will bring in a decent freshmen class. Given the inexperience all over the team, a lot of these guys will have opportunities to see the field right away.

Good teams usually need some contributions from first-year players if they want to have success. That could go even further for LSU, who’s just counting on these recruits to have enough athletes on scholarship.

Let’s look at the five freshmen most likely to see the field in 2022.

LSU officially announces addition of Mekhi Wingo

Mekhi Wingo is officially announced as an LSU Tiger

One of the key members of the No. 1 ranked transfer class is former Missouri Tiger Mekhi Wingo. He joins a group of 10 other players who opted to transfer to Baton Rouge for the 2022 college football season.

Wingo was a member of the Freshman All-SEC team for his efforts in 2021. He finished off his freshman year with 27 tackles, two TFLs, one sack, and one interception returned for a touchdown. He will play alongside fellow Freshman All-SEC defensive tackle Maason Smith. Smith was also named Freshman All-American for his play in 2021.

On Monday the LSU Tigers officially announced the addition of Mekhi Wingo from the transfer portal.

Wingo played a De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Missouri. There he played under Robert Steeples, the new defensive backs coach for the Tigers. Wingo was listed as a three-star defensive lineman and ranked No. 74 at his position in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

He was ranked as a four-star transfer when he entered the portal on Jan. 7, 2022. Just over a week later, Wingo had committed to play for LSU in 2022. At the time he was ranked as the No. 4 best player in the transfer portal by 247Sports.

LSU has done quite the job filling out their roster through the portal. The team lost two defensive tackles with Neil Farrell Jr and Glen Logan. On top of adding Wingo through the portal, the team also signed Quency Wiggins in the 2022 class. Wiggins was rated as a four-star defensive tackle in the class. He was a late commit, doing so just prior to the early signing period.

What Quency Wiggins could bring to LSU

A look at the newest LSU defensive lineman Quency Wiggins

The LSU Tigers landed four-star defensive lineman Quency Wiggins from Madison Prep. Wiggins is the No. 7 ranked prospect in Louisiana, ranked 15th of all defensive linemen, and 92nd overall prospect.

Wiggins finished his second year of high school football, and he helped lead Madison Prep to a 3A football and basketball championships in 2020-21. The 6’6″ 275 lb defensive lineman compiled 56 tackles, 26 TFLs, 13 sacks, four pass deflections, and three forced fumbles in his senior year.

Wiggins has good size and reach that should translate on the college level. However, the defensive lineman often saw double and triple teams all season. Wiggins is well equipped to handle double and triple teams with his size and strength. At his size, you would not think Wiggins is very athletic, but that is not the case; he can mobe an outstanding athlete.

The new recruit has shown a good football IQ; Wiggins can diagnose plays as they develop. At Madison Prep, Wiggins played both ends and tackle on the defensive line. At LSU, he probably will play end but could slide down to tackle if needed.

The Tigers will be getting a defensive lineman with a tremendous upside that someday could be a high draft pick. It will be up to Wiggins to take the teachings from the LSU defensive staff and apply it on the field.

Will this top 100 defensive lineman choose Florida over ‘Bama and LSU?

Landing this elite defensive lineman would be huge for both Florida and Dan Mullen.

Four-star defensive lineman Quency Wiggins has cut his list of schools down to three and Florida is one of the finalists for the Top 100 recruit.

Florida joins Alabama and Louisiana State in Wiggins’ top three. He’s visited each school multiple times with his last trip to Gainesville being an official visit the weekend of the Vanderbilt game in early October. The 6-foot-6-inch, 274-pounder would likely fill the role defensive end Zachary Carter currently serves in for the Gators.

Florida lost some of its top recruits after failing to live up to expectations this season, but landing an elite defensive recruit within weeks of firing the team’s defensive coordinator would be a step in the right direction for Dan Mullen.

It would be quite the statement for Mullen to pull this one off. Generally speaking, Lousiana kids like to go to LSU and the Tigers already have one crystal ball prediction on 247Sports for Wiggins with medium confidence. But Florida isn’t giving up. Wiggins told 247Sports that he talks to defensive line coach David Turner often and that Florida and LSU are recruiting him the hardest.

“I am still talking to them every day,” Wiggins said. “I really talk with everyone at Florida, but Coach Turner is the main one since he’s my main recruiter. It makes me feel like I am really wanted at Florida and a big time target.”

Wiggins is No. 99 overall on the 247 Composite list and is the No. 17 defensive line recruit in the country. Florida’s 2022 recruiting class is currently ranked 23rd in the country and ninth in the SEC. Adding a top 100 recruit would help get the Gators closer to where they should be in the recruiting department.

Wiggins hopes to decide by the Early Signing Period in December but has yet to name a decision date.

These two 4-star defensive prospects have planned official visits to the Swamp

Florida’s matchup with Vanderbilt on Oct. 9 means more than you think now that these two 4-stars are visiting.

Florida will host a pair of four-star recruits on official visits when Vanderbilt comes to the Swamp, according to 247Sports. Defensive lineman Quency Wiggins and linebacker Wesley Bissainthe will be in Gainesville on Oct. 9 for the game.

Wiggins, the No. 96 overall prospect on the 247Sports Composite, visited back in the summer and has named Florida in his top five along with Alabama, LSU, Texas and USC. He’s kept in contact with the coaching staff regularly since and is one of the Gators’ top priorities for 2022. After seeing the campus in his last visit, Wiggins is focusing on the gameday environment this time around.

The defensive line recruit will be traveling from Alabama but the linebacker, Bissainthe, is an in-state target for the Gators. Florida has already landed four-star Shemar James and three-star EJ Lightsey, but Dan Mullen is still pursuing targets at the position.

Bissainthe has already made official visits to the other four schools in his top five: Florida State, Miami, Penn State and West Virginia. The Gators get the last impression on him, and Bissainthe should commit around Thanksgiving weekend if all goes as planned.

247Sports rates Bissainthe as the fifteenth best linebacker in the country and he sits at No. 121 overall. Landing him would ensure a strong linebacking core for the future, and the Gators are in a good spot to land one or both of the four-stars visiting for the Vanderbilt game
