Which college produces the best NFL QBs?

Does Alabama have a case of claiming to be QBU?

College football fans love to argue over which program produces the best NFL talent.

For example, some might consider Alabama to be WRU because of the success of Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Jameson Williams, and many more. While others could argue LSU because of Odell Beckham Jr., Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase.

So, which school has earned the right to be called QBU? Since 2010 the Oklahoma Sooners have led the way with five quarterbacks drafted to the NFL including Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts.

However, the Crimson Tide aren’t far behind with four quarterbacks of their own including Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones. Some would argue that you could include Jalen Hurts here because he earned his degree from Alabama, which would tie the Tide with the Sooners.

The Tide will tie the Sooners after this draft with Bryce Young likely to go No. 1 overall. I also think the quality of quarterbacks that the Tide has produced has been slightly better as Mac, Tua and Bryce are all considered franchise players.

Every quarterback commit for the Oklahoma Sooners since 2000

A look at every Oklahoma Sooners quarterback commit since 2000. Malachi Nelson ranks as the second-highest quarterback recruit at OU.

The Oklahoma Sooners just added another top quarterback commit of the Lincoln Riley era. After landing Spencer Rattler in 2019, Caleb Williams in 2021, they added Malachi Nelson for 2023. They continued the trend of taking a five-star quarterback in odd number year classes. Nelson ranks as the second-highest rated quarterback commit for OU since 2000.

Only 2004 signee Rhett Bomar of Grand Prairie was ranked higher, and by the slightest of margins. There have been plenty of notable names at quarterback since 2000 when recruiting rankings became part of the college landscape. Names such as Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, and Baker Mayfield won’t appear on the list.

Sam Bradford wasn’t highly-touted coming out of high school but he would eventually put his name in the Oklahoma record books.

Sooners Wire takes a look at every commit at the position. Who stayed and who transferred out since 2000:

CBS Sports believes Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler will exceed the hype

Does Spencer Rattler have the tools to meet high expectations in 2021?

College football will now be looking for a national quarterback favorite with the departure of Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Zach Wilson. Who will now land atop the position hierarchy? There is a valid case to be made for Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler. As the 2021 college football season draws closer, endless chatter will commence on the Sooners’ QB1.

Not only is Rattler poised to have an outstanding year in Norman, but is already a favorite candidate to win the Heisman Trophy. Given Lincoln Riley’s recent track record of success with quarterbacks, the talk should not come as a surprise. CBS Sports breaks down the narrative.

“The Heisman chatter already has legs. The redshirt sophomore is the favorite to win the sport’s most prestigious personal honor at +550 per William Hill Sportsbook. Plus money on a favorite is never a bad thing, and Rattler checks all the boxes. He’s a rare player at an important position on what should be a preseason top-five team. In his first year as a starter, Rattler hit 3,000 yards passing (top in the Big 12), 28 touchdowns and seven picks, five of which came in three games at the start of the year.”

As a product of the ‘QBU’ as Oklahoma has come to be known with all three of Rattler’s predecessors either winning the illustrious honor or becoming a runner-up. Those are lofty shoes to fill in Norman.

“The Heisman pedigree is there, too, with Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield each winning the award in 2018 and 2017, respectively, while Jalen Hurts was the runner-up in 2019. All three would be drafted in the first two rounds the following spring with Murray and Mayfield going No. 1 overall.”

Rattler has the pathway to succeed. Not only does he possess Patrick Mahomes-like elusive mobility to make off-platform throws and rare arm talent, but he is the first quarterback to truly be developed by offensive guru, Lincoln Riley. Mayfield, Murray, and Hurts all transferred to OU and Rattler came as a high school recruit. He has a tremendous upside for a young player with the innate characteristics to command the huddle and carve up Big 12 defenses. Rattler has impressive passing stats in his first year as evidence, ranking among some of the best college football quarterbacks.

With a solid supporting cast returning in 2021- Marvin Mims, Theo Wease, Drake Stoops, Austin Stogner, Jeremiah Hall, Kennedy Brooks, and Eric Gray- the sky is the limit.

Sure, not everything is perfect. There is always room for improvement, especially with a young QB in a leadership role. Rattler struggled early on in the 2020 season against Kansas State, Iowa State, and Texas with costly negative plays. A prime example, after back-to-back turnovers against the Longhorns, Rattler was benched early in the second quarter for a breather. He refocused and came back on fire in the third, with two touchdown drives. Whether it was ball security issues, holding on to the ball too long, or trying to play hero ball and do too much, Rattler has to minimize the mistakes in 2021.

When you have a competitive quarterback that improvises to create big plays outside of the pocket, negatives are bound to accompany the positives. He has all the right tangibles, just needs refinement. With Creed Humphrey, the centerpiece of Oklahoma’s offensive line now in the NFL, the offensive line raises questions. If the unit is solid, OU has one of the most explosive offenses in the works for the upcoming season. It all starts with No. 7, Spencer Rattler. With a high ceiling and desire to up his draft stock, Rattler is gearing up for a stellar campaign.

Oklahoma has produced more 2021 NFL starting quarterbacks than any other school

The Oklahoma Sooners have produced more starting NFL quarterbacks than any other school.

The Oklahoma Sooners under head coach Lincoln Riley has become ‘QBU’ in a short timeframe. During his four years as the head coach, he has produced two No. 1 overall picks in the NFL draft and another as a second-rounder. All three quarterbacks are projected to be opening weekend starters in the NFL. Not to mention, his current starting quarterback, Spencer Rattler has already been mocked No. 1 overall.

With the NFL draft now firmly behind us, NBC Sports put out their projected starting quarterbacks around the NFL. Sooners Wire breaks down the quarterbacks by school with Oklahoma leading the way.

  • Oklahoma (3)
  • North Dakota State (2)
  • Clemson (2)
  • California (2)

California was the only school with multiple starters in the NFL (Jared Goff, Aaron Rodgers) outside of the Sooners prior to the 2021 draft. Following the three-day event, Clemson and North Dakota State joined the party. Clemson now has Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, while North Dakota State has Carson Wentz and Trey Lance.

A look at what NBC Sports says about the Oklahoma trio projected to start for their perspective teams:

Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland finished the season 11-5 and it looks like Mayfield has turned the corner.

In Week 13 against Tennessee, Mayfield played excellent and if he can play like that more often, then he is the long-term answer. He showed further he may be the real deal in a Monday Night thriller against Baltimore and then winning a playoff game at Pittsburgh.

Kevin Stefanski was the best thing to ever happen to Mayfield’s NFL career.

Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona nearly made the postseason two seasons after selecting Murray first overall during the 2019 NFL Draft. Beyond minor durability concerns, there’s no reason he should not be starting for the Cardinals next season.

With the Eagles trading Wentz to Indianapolis, it means the starting quarterback job in Philly would be Jalen Hurts’ to lose. He played well enough at the end of his rookie season. Hurts should be the starter in 2021.
