Sooners Kelly Maxwell named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

Oklahoma Sooners pitcher Kelly Maxwell wins Big 12 Pitcher of the Week.

It was a fantastic start to her Oklahoma career for senior Kelly Maxwell. She threw five scoreless innings to beat the Duke Blue Devils and followed that up with another 2.2 scoreless innings to get the win over Washington.

That’s 7.2 innings without allowing a run. In her first two outings, she allowed just one hit, two walks, and a hit by pitch while recording four strikeouts.

For her efforts, Maxwell was awarded Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. It was the seventh time in her career that Maxwell has won a weekly award.

The Sooners are off to a 4-0 start to the season and Maxwell is a big reason why. She’ll be counted upon in big spots all season like she was late in the win against Washington.

Her big-game experience will be huge for the Sooners as they attempt to make history in pursuit of a fourth-straight national championship. Kelly Maxwell provided a glimpse of what she’s capable of in week one for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Texas Longhorns Sweep Their Way Through PV Tournament

The Texas Longhorns softball team finished the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge with their perfect record intact.

The Texas Longhorns softball team swept a triple-header on Friday in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. Texas was back on the mound for a double-header that included an exhibition match against the Mexican National Team. They dropped that game 5-4 after a wild eight inning. Texas had the bases loaded but hit into a triple-play to end that strong effort. They gave up a sac fly in the bottom of the eight for the walk-off.

In the night cap of the double-header, Texas would take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Miranda Elish took the ball and proceeded to pitch a complete game where she gave up just one unearned run in the 7th. Elish improved to 4-0 on the season giving up just three hits and striking out seven.

Kaitlyn Washington’s RBI ground out in the second got Texas on the board, Kaitlyn Slack singled to drive in Mary Iakopo to make it 2-0. In the third inning the Longhorns extended the lead to 4-0 when Iakopo single that scored two unearned runs. Texas is now 10-0 on the season and three players picked up some tournament hardware.

The Longhorns will host the North Texas Mean Green on Wednesday ahead of the Texas Invitational next weekend.

Oklahoma softball goes undefeated in Puerto Vallarta College Challenge

Oklahoma softball (4-0) went a perfect 3-0 in the PV College Challenge on Friday and Saturday to close out the weekend.ย 

After winning their season opener 9-3 over Nevada on Thursday, Oklahoma softball went 3-0 on Friday and Saturday to close out the weekend.ย 

All four games were apart of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. Oklahoma (4-0) and Oregon (5-0) finished as the only two undefeated teams in session one.

On Friday the Sooners earned their largest win of the season with a 10-3 victory over Long Beach State. Much like their opener, true freshman Kinzie Hansen had another solid outing, earning two RBIโ€™s in the first inning to give the Sooners an early lead. From there, Oklahoma added three more runs in the second inning and coasted to a 7-point win.

Oklahoma picked up a pair of close wins on Saturday with a 5-2 win over George Washington University and a 3-1 win over BYU.

Brooke Vestal, Macy McAdoo and Shannon Saile all contributed to the Sooners win in the circle against George Washington. Saile is the only player to have pitched in all four games for the Sooners.ย 

Oklahoma trailed 2-1 after the third inning, but scored four runs in the fourth inning to power past GW. Sophomore Grace Green had two hits and two RBIโ€™s.

In their second game on Saturday, the Sooners finally broke out All-American pitcher Giselle Juarez. Saile started five innings in the circle before Juarez entered in relief, allowing one run and striking out three.ย 

Next up, Oklahoma travels to Tuscon, Arizona to participate in the Hillenbrand Invitational, taking on Bryant, Northern Iowa, Long Beach and Arizona Feb. 14-16.ย

Despite several returning upperclassmen, the Oklahoma freshman stepped up big in the Sooners 9-3 victory over Nevada at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday.

Three freshman combined for five hits and RBIs in the Sooners’ opener. True freshmen Kinzie Hansen and Rylie Boone recorded two hits apiece, and Hansen drove in four runs.

Senior pitcher Shannon Saile got off to a 1-0 start in the circle, pitching five innings and striking out eight. She allowed just three hits. Brook Vestal and Macy McAdoo each pitched an inning to round out the Sooners rotation.

The Sooners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Hansen singled to center, and tacked on two more in the third to extend their lead to 4-1. They blew it open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs again on two Hansen RBIโ€™s.

Oklahoma is now 35-14 in season openers all-time.

The Sooners are back in action against Long Beach State at 12:30 p.m. CT on Friday.
