Spend Prime Day looking back at the best highlights of Deion ‘Prime Time’ Sanders’ NFL and MLB career

Find a better Prime Day deal than an NFL Hall of Famer who doubles as an MLB utility player

Today, July 13, 2022, is Prime Day — they annual extravaganza of deals offered by Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer. From electronics to office supplies, you can make your way through the mobile app or online website to find many discounted items.

But that’s not what we are here for. At least, not me.

When I hear or read the word “prime” my sports-engraved brain immediately navigates to the one and only Deion Sanders, Mr. Prime Time himself. And to get the most out of Prime Day, it’s only right to look back at Sanders’ greatest moments from his career as a professional athlete.

Broncos have 7 nationally televised games this season

The Broncos have five prime-time games this year, the league max for the initial schedule.

The Denver Broncos were prime-time game darlings for the NFL when Peyton Manning was the team’s quarterback from 2012-2015.

Following the star quarterback’s retirement, though, Denver missed the playoffs in six-straight seasons and national interest in the team diminished. Consequently, the NFL initially gave the Broncos just one prime-time game (on Thursday Night Football) when the 2021 schedule came out last year.

That’s changed in 2022, thanks to new quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson’s arrival in Denver has made the Broncos contenders again, putting the team back in the national spotlight. The NFL will feature Wilson with his new team seven times this year in nationally televised games, five in prime time.

It all starts in Week 1 when Russell Wilson travels with his new team to face his old team, the Seattle Seahawks, on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 12 at 6:15 p.m. MT.

Just two weeks later in Week 3, the Broncos will host the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football” on NBC on Sept. 25 at 6:20 p.m. MT.

In Week 5, Denver will host the Colts on “Thursday Night Football” on Oct. 6 at 6:16 p.m. MT on Prime Video.

Following that game, the Broncos will host the Los Angeles Chargers on “Monday Night Football” on Oct. 17 at 6:15 p.m. MT on ESPN.

In Week 14, Denver will play on “Sunday Night Football” again on Dec. 11, this time against the Kansas City Chiefs on NBC.

In addition to those five prime-time games, the Broncos will also have two other nationally-televised games.

Denver will face the Jaguars in London on Oct. 30 — that technically won’t be a prime-time game with a 7:30 a.m. MT kickoff and it technically won’t be “televised” because it’s streaming on ESPN+, but the contest will be available to fans all across the U.S. in Week 8.

The Broncos will later travel to California to face the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 25 as part of the NFL’s Christmas Day tripleheader this year. That game will begin at 2:30 p.m. MT and will air on CBS/Nickelodeon.

Top prime-time possibilities for the Chiefs in 2022

As we wait for the NFL’s schedule release on Thursday evening, we’re pondering the best prime-time options for the #Chiefs in 2022.

During the 2021 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs continued to have a strong presence in prime time.

The Chiefs were awarded five primetime appearances for the fourth consecutive season. Could the upcoming season make the fifth straight season that this team is awarded five games in prime time? I think it’s a strong possibility.

We already know that they’ll play in at least one prime time game for their home opener, which will take place Thursday, Sept. 15th on “Thursday Night Football” against the Los Angeles Chargers. With the NFL set to officially release the regular-season schedule on Thursday night, here is a look at six potential options for Kansas City in prime time for 2022:

Broncos will have plenty of prime-time games in 2022, perhaps including Seahawks

Russell Wilson will put the Broncos back in the national spotlight, with multiple prime-time games expected this fall.

When the NFL announced the Denver Broncos’ 2021 schedule last year, the team had just one initially-scheduled prime-time game. The Broncos had missed the playoffs in five-straight seasons after Peyton Manning’s retirement, and the NFL’s schedule makers considered them a bust for national television audiences, giving them only one mandatory “Thursday Night Football” game.

The Broncos were irrelevant.

After agreeing to trade for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver has quickly become relevant again, and the schedule will reflect that.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Broncos are given the initially-scheduled max of five prime-time games this fall, perhaps starting with the NFL’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.

Another strong candidate for prime time on Denver’s list of 2022 opponents is Seattle, Wilson’s former team. That would be a dream “Sunday Night Football” matchup for NBC — and every other network will want it, too.

Then there’s the division games.

Russell Wilson vs. Patrick Mahomes and Wilson vs. Justin Herbert will be must-watch TV when the Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively. One or both of those matchups could end up on national television in 2022.

Denver will also face the Baltimore Ravens, potential contenders in the AFC, and the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, two of Wilson’s former division rivals. The NFL will have plenty of great opportunities to put the Broncos in prime time this fall, and they’ll take advantage of it.

The 2022 NFL schedule will likely be announced in April or May.

Notre Dame-Virginia: Staff Predictions

What happens Saturday night under the lights at Virginia?

No. 9 (CFP) Notre Dame’s toughest remaining test of the 2021 regular season comes Saturday night as the Irish travel to Virginia.  The task at hand will be to slow one of the nation’s best offenses as the Cavaliers are averaging 38.9 points per game which ties them with North Carolina for the sixth-most by a Power Five team.

Notre Dame will again be without Kyle Hamilton while Virginia starting quarterback Brennan Armstrong’s availability won’t be publicly known until kickoff after he suffered a rib injury at BYU two weeks ago.

Notre Dame’s only previous trip to Charlottesville ended in dramatic fashion.  Will this trip end similarly?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees happening on Saturday night:

Chiefs tied for most games in prime time in 2021

A total of 10 teams are tied with five games in prime time each.

The Kansas City Chiefs have enjoyed a large helping of the bright lights of prime time in the past and that trend will continue in 2021.

The Chiefs will appear in a total of five games in prime time during the upcoming season, which is good for a 10-way tie for the most in the league. They’ll be sharing the spotlight with some other really good football teams, but only two other teams from the AFC conference. Here’s a look at each of the teams currently scheduled to play five total games in prime time:

  1. Chiefs
  2. Rams
  3. 49ers
  4. Ravens
  5. Seahawks
  6. Packers
  7. Steelers
  8. Saints
  9. Cowboys
  10. Buccaneers

This marks the third consecutive season that the Chiefs have seen five games in prime time. After Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in 2018, it was a given that Kansas City would be getting more tread here. That only increased with back-to-back Super Bowl appearances by the team and with the team winning Super Bowl LIV.

It’s possible for the Chiefs and other teams to gain or lose additional games in prime time during the course of the season under the NFL’s flexible scheduling rules. Games are not allowed to be flexed to Monday and Thursday nights, but Sunday afternoon games can be flexed to Sunday night games during Weeks 5-17.

Kansas City has several games that would be eligible to move to Sunday night under this policy. The Chiefs’ highly anticipated game against the Packers in Week 9 could be moved. The Week 11 game against the Dallas Cowboys and the Week 16 games against the Pittsburgh Steelers could also be in consideration.

Report: Saints, Steelers to play nationally-broadcast preseason game

The New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers will play a prime-time preseason game in Week 2 of the NFL preseason, reports The Athletic.

While the NFL is planning to announce its 2020 schedule of games on Thursday evening, it is also finalizing its slate of preseason exhibition games. Per The Athletic’s Jeff Duncan, one of those kickoffs will be a prime-time matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, which will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

That’s a game the Saints will travel to Pittsburgh for, and it’s possible they will try to organize joint practices with the Steelers. It’s a favorite training camp tactic of Saints coach Sean Payton, who has worked to run joint practices with preseason opponents including the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, and Houston Texans in past years. Duncan also reported that the Saints requested just such an arrangement with the Los Angeles Rams, but it’s unclear yet whether the NFL approved that request.

In any case: these shared workouts give teams an opportunity to test and evaluate their players against uncommon opponents, following weeks of grueling training camp practices against their own teammates. Getting to compete against new faces and fresh skills sets is a great learning tool.

Which 5 Redskins games have best chance to be on Prime Time in 2020?

Each NFL team will have at least one opportunity to play on Prime Time in 2020, so which game will be dubbed as the Redskins most watchable?

Most fans outside of Washington don’t want much to do with the Redskins being placed in front of their eyes during a primetime slot during the season, be it on Sunday or Monday Night Football. Still, though, each team in the NFL is guaranteed at least one prime time game per season, giving them a chance to show the world what they’ve been working on, or in some cases, what they have left to do.

The NFL will release all 32 schedules on Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET, so we will get to see when the Redskins do in fact get to play on the big stage — assuming that we get an NFL season at all. So who might they play in the prime time game? It’s likely to be a matchup that is fraught with narratives and storylines, so here are our rankings for who it might be.

No. 5 — AWAY: Cleveland Browns

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

It may not seem like the Browns and Redskins have had much of a rivalry as of late, but that’s mainly due to how bad both teams have been over the past decade. In reality, these two squads have been linked to one another in several ways in recent memory. The main string connecting the two was the Trent Williams trade, where Cleveland was said to be a suitor for a long time, though a deal didn’t eventually get done. Former Washington interim head coach Bill Callahan is now in Cleveland as well, coaching the offensive line, and former Browns QB coach Ken Zampese is now in Washington, overseeing Dwayne Haskins’ development.

This may not be the most entertaining game to watch for the common fan, but it would feature two rosters full of young talent with high expectations ahead of them.

Deion Sanders didn’t want Todd Gurley wearing No. 21 for Falcons, later says it was just a joke

Former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley says Deion Sanders did not want him wearing No. 21 for the Atlanta Falcons.

After being drafted by Atlanta, Deion “Prime Time” Sanders played cornerback for the Falcons from 1989-1993 wearing the No. 21 jersey.

Prime Time recently commented on the Falcons new jerseys and according to Sanders, no one should be wearing No. 21 in Atlanta, even recently signed Todd Gurley.

“Only thing I don’t like about the Falcons uniforms is I really do think they need to take No. 21 and put it up in the rafters and leave it alone,” Sanders said. “Leave it alone!”

While Sanders comments didn’t keep Gurley from choosing to wear No. 21, the former Georgia running back did hear a few words from Deion on the matter.

“Prime was hatin’ on me. He told me don’t wear it,” Gurley told 92.3 The Game in Atlanta. “If I was Prime, I wouldn’t want nobody be wearing my number either.”

Deion spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens so does he really deserve that No. 21 in Atlanta retired in his name?

Don’t get me wrong, Sanders is one of the greatest Falcons of all-time and the NFL Hall of Famer deserves his accolades, but he may be reaching a bit.

After the news got out, Prime took to Twitter to say it was just a joke and that Gurley will “represent it (the number) right.”

I think if Sanders had his way every team in the NFL would have the No. 21 in the rafters.
