Cowboys-49ers staff picks and headline predictions for Week 5: What will they say?

A look at how Cowboys and Niners Wire’s staff see the contest, with each contributor volunteering a final score and a post-game headline prediction.

The Dallas Cowboys have been waiting nine months for this opportunity. While the players and possibly the coaching staff might not have known, the rematch of the 2022 season’s divisional game was destined to happen. Thanks to the three-year rotation of intra-conference schedules, the Cowboys were going to head to the Bay no matter what.

But that doesn’t take away from the relevance of the matchup. Dallas needs this game. A loss drops them essentially three games behind the 49ers in the race for home-field advantage in the NFC. The Cowboys would need to finish ahead of San Francisco in the standings to avoid a potential road playoff matchup, so even though it’s Week 5 this is important. How confident are we they can pull off the upset.

The staff of Cowboys Wire got together and looked to predict the final score and the storyline that will be the narrative after it’s over. With a guest appearance from Niners Wire’s managing editor Kyle Madson, here’s how we think it will unfold.

Week 5 picks: Who the experts are taking in Jaguars vs. Bills

Not many experts think the Jaguars have what it takes to beat the Bills in Week 5.

The Jacksonville Jaguars got back on the right track last week against the Atlanta Falcons, cruising to a 23-7 win even if their offense still struggled to get going.

Was that win enough to convince experts that the Jaguars are ready to take down the steamroller that is the Buffalo Bills?

After losing in an overtime thriller in Week 1, the Bills rolled through their next three opponents by a combined 90 points. Buffalo is now second in scoring and allowing the second fewest points.

With a London meeting between the Bills and Jaguars kicking off Sunday morning, here’s who experts think will win the tilt at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:

Final score predictions for New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots

Our staff writers made their final score predictions for Week 5’s game. Picking the winner in New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots:

It’s safe to say that many fans aren’t expecting big things out of Sunday’s New Orleans Saints game. The Saints (2-2) are a team with a competent defense shackled to a miserable offense on a collision course with the New England Patriots (1-3) — a squad who fits the same description.

There hasn’t been much movement in the betting line this week. The oddsmakers at BetMGM Sportsbook favor the Patriots by a single point at home, setting the over/under at 39 points. Our staff writers shared their final score predictions for Week 5’s matchup, and we’re all forecasting a low-scoring affair:

Notre Dame-Louisville Predictions: Do Cardinals pose real upset threat?

Do you have Notre Dame on upset/letdown alert this weekend?

It’s been an exhausting couple of weeks for Notre Dame football as the Irish have gone down to the wire each of the last two Saturday nights.  Will this Saturday’s trip to unbeaten Louisville be the same?

It’ll be one of the bigger games in recent memory for a Louisville team who impressed through five games.  They jumped into the top 25 this past week, can they soar up the rankings by upsetting Notre Dame?

The Irish have to find their offense again, something that has regressed the last two weeks.  Will they be able to do so and keep their dreams of reaching the College Football Playoff alive for at least another week?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees happening Saturday night in Louisville:

No. 12 Oklahoma vs. No. 4 Texas: Red River Rivalry Sooners Wire Staff Predictions

Who wins the 119th meeting of the Red River Rivalry? Sooners Wire Staff logs their predictions for this top-12 matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.

The No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners and the No. 4 Texas Longhorns meet at the Cotton Bowl for the 119th edition of the [autotag]Red River Rivalry[/autotag]. It will be the final showdown in Dallas as members of the Big 12 before the programs head to the SEC.

With the move to the SEC on the horizon, commissioner Greg Sankey will be in town to take in all of the festivities at the Cotton Bowl and State Fair of Texas. Also in attendance will be Heisman Trophy winner and Oklahoma legend Baker Mayfield. Mayfield will be the guest picker for ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

It’s a clash of powerhouse programs that have been two of the best in the history of college football.

The Texas Longhorns come in as 6.5-point favorites for the Red River Rivalry, and the oddsmakers are expecting a high-scoring game, setting the over/under at 60.5 for Saturday.

Texas holds the most recent win, but the Sooners had won eight of the last nine inside the [autotag]Cotton Bowl[/autotag]. Oklahoma also picked up a win in the 2018 Big 12 title game after losing to the Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry game earlier that year.

Since 2000, Texas has won consecutive Red River Rivalry games just twice in 2004-2005 and 2008-2009. Otherwise, the Sooners have dominated the series, holding a 15-8 record in the Red River Rivalry since 2000 and a 16-8 record overall in that time.

Who wins this week and keeps their undefeated season alive? Here are our Sooners Wire Staff Predictions for the Red River Rivalry.

Crunch the numbers: What do analytics say about Alabama vs. Texas A&M?

Check out the statistical chances Alabama loses in the Week 6 road matchup with Texas A&M.

Alabama, ranked No. 11 in the nation, will hit the road to take on Texas A&M at Kyle Field. While the Crimson Tide is favored, it is expected to be a close game, as a lot hangs in the balance.

The outcome of this matchup will aid in determining which program takes the top spot in the SEC West for the time being and could lead to Alabama falling greatly in the rankings or making a leap in the right direction.

ESPN’s analytics give the Crimson Tide a 66.3% chance of winning, while the Aggies have only a 33.7% chance.

Texas A&M recently lost quarterback Conner Weigman for the season, but their defense still ranks inside the top five in the nation, and the strongest within the SEC.

Both teams enter this game with one non-conference loss – Alabama fell at home to Texas, while Texas A&M lost on the road to Miami.

This is a great test to see where the Crimson Tide are at on their path to improvement. A lot has changed on the offensive side of the ball, whether it be play-calling or quarterback play. How this game goes will tell us a lot about the team and could help predict how the remainder of the season will play out.

College Gameday/SEC Nation predict Florida-Kentucky winner

Moments before the Florida and Kentucky game kicked off, the College Gameday and SEC Nation crews submitted their predictions for the game.

Moments before kickoff on Saturday, the College Gameday and SEC Nation crews made their picks for the Florida-Kentucky game.

On ESPN, Desmond Howard, guest picker and actors Ken Jeong and Pat McAfee were all in on Florida, while Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit took the home-team Kentucky Wildcats.

“Man, this is going to be a grudge matchup,” Howard said. “I’m talking about a hard-fought fistfight.”

McAfee added that he expected a big day from Trevor Etienne.

SEC Nation’s crew was also split. Tim Tebow picked Florida to win, but Paul Finebaum, Roman Harper and Jordan Rodgers all went with Big Blue.

They all noted that Kentucky being at home gave them an edge, and it’s a fair point considering Florida’s only loss came on the road against Utah. This is a young Gators team that could easily show its age early on.

Hopefully, Tebow is right, though, and the Gators prove that beating Tennessee wasn’t a fluke.

Big 12 picks for Week 5: Jayhawks, Mountaineers looking for upsets in the Lone Star State

One week into Big 12 play, there’s already a pretty good indication of who the contenders and pretenders are in the Big 12.

Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State, BYU, UCF, and TCU have all looked good through the first four weeks of the season. West Virginia provided the first surprise with their upset of Texas Tech last week.

Kansas State and Oklahoma State are off this week, but there are six conference games in week 5.

But how will week two of conference play go? Here are this week’s Big 12 predictions.

Week 4: 5-3

2023 Overall: 34-15

No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Iowa State Cyclones: Sooners Wire staff predictions

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to continue their undefeated season when they host Iowa State Saturday, and here are this week’s Sooners Wire staff predictions.

The Oklahoma Sooners (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) and the Iowa State Cyclones (2-2, 1-0) renew a matchup that dates back to a 13-0 win for the Cyclones back in 1928. Though they earned the win in the series opener, OU holds a 79-7-2 edge over Iowa State in the all-time series.

Each year is a different game, but Iowa State has played the Oklahoma Sooners tough in recent years.

2022’s win was the largest margin of victory in a win for the Oklahoma Sooners during the Matt Campbell era.

How will the Sooners perform this week? Here’s how we feel the game will go in this week’s staff predictions.

Sooners Wire Staff Predictions

The Iowa State Cyclones have been a thorn in the Sooners’ side since [autotag]Matt Campbell[/autotag] took over as head coach.

They upset the Sooners in Norman in 2017 and also knocked them off in 2020. That doesn’t include the game-winning 2-point conversion stop the Sooners made in 2019 or the interception late in the game in 2021.

No matter how talented the Sooners have been, Iowa State knows how to play them close.

They do that with elite defense and by taking care of the football.

People will look at Iowa State this year and think they aren’t very good, and the Sooners will roll. Well, that’s not entirely true. They still are elite defensively and had a coming-out party on offense in their win over Oklahoma State a week ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if this game was another low-scoring game for both teams, similar to last week.

Sooners 27, Cyclones 6
