Portland State cancels South Dakota game because of whooping cough

Portland State had interesting reason to cancel game with South Dakota

This is a different reason for seeing a college football game called off.

Portland State was forced to cancel its game with South Dakota on Saturday because whooping cough has infected its football team.

Today’s Portland State Football game vs. South Dakota has been canceled due to illness within the PSU program.

A case of pertussis (whooping cough) got into the Viking team two days ago. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that affects the lungs. As a result, many team members have been exposed to the disease. The two programs and their team doctors have been in discussions regarding the situation. It was determined by Portland State that the game would not be played in the interest of the health of the student-athletes.

It should be noted that no players on the Viking team are seriously ill at this time.

Dan Lanning talks Bo Nix billboards, recruiting benefits, and Oregon’s prep for Week 1

Wednesday presented the final opportunity for media members to talk to Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning before fall camp ends and the game preparation for Portland State begins.

There were a lot of things to discuss as the Ducks get ready to ramp up to full speed for the season.

Among the most pressing topics was how the recent billboards featuring quarterback Bo Nix’s face going up around the nation — in New York City and Dallas — and how much of an impact that has in the recruiting world. Lanning also discussed the most recent updates from fall camp, highlighted a couple of young players on defense, and gave a preview of what’s to come over the next few days.

Here are the most notable quotes from Lanning’s press conference on Wednesday.:

Washington vs Portland State Game Preview

Why Portland State Will Win

The Vikings weren’t bad in the 21-17 loss to San Jose State.

It had the lead late in the game, but gave up a touchdown in the final 90 seconds as it slipped away.

They have the passing game to give Washington a problem – as long as there aren’t a slew of third down misfires and two picks like there were against San Jose State – and they have the ability to get to the quarterback and pressure Michael Penix Jr. and make him work more than Kent State did, because …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Washington Will Win

The Indiana transfer was brilliant against the Golden Flashes.

Granted, you could throw left-handed like Penix Jr. and crank up yards in chunks against the Kent State defense, but it was still impressive.

He threw for 345 yards and four scores, got the O moving right away, and he did exactly what everyone was looking for out of new head coach Kalen DeBoer’s attack.

Turnover margin was a problem for Portland State last year, and it was -3 in the loss to San Jose State. That’s not going to help because …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Washington’s defense is going to come out with a bit of an attitude after an okay performance.

The offensive side needs to get more out of the running game – that will come – but the defense that allowed 340 yards to Kent State will want to generate a bit more pressure. The D forced three takeaways last week, and it’ll match that against the Vikings.

San Jose State vs Portland State Game Preview

Why Portland State Will Win

Is the San Jose State offensive front ready for what’s coming?

It came up with a few nice options from the transfer portal, but it has to do a whole lot more to generate a running game after struggling to come up with a push last season.

San Jose State, welcome to VJ Malo. the 6-1, 270-pounder is one of the best interior pass rushers in the FCS for a defense that’s going to be amazing at getting into the backfield all season long.

The PSU D has to force the Spartans to keep screwing up, and the revamped O has to take advantage of every opportunity. San Jose State was one of the worst teams in college football in turnover margin, but …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why San Jose State Will Win

The Portland State offense will be hit-or-miss.

The backfield is starting some new parts for an attack that sputtered and coughed away too many chances last season, had a big problem with turnovers, and didn’t push the ball down the field enough.

San Jose State should get more explosive offensively with Hawaii transfer Chevan Cordeiro coming in at quarterback – he hit the Vikings for over 300 yards and three scores in a 49-35 Rainbow Warrior win last year – working with a  receiving corps that should do what it wants against the Portland State secondary.

On the other side, the Spartans get nine defensive starters back with a line that should hold up well enough, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Portland State will score enough to keep this interesting.

It won’t be steady enough to pull this off against a Spartan team that should be sharper on both sides of the ball this season, but the PSU defensive front will be a problem.

Cordeiro and his great receivers will come up with two good scoring drives in the fourth quarter to pull away.

UT News: December 23, 2019

It’s almost Christmas Eve! As Santa is getting ready to bring presents to the Vols fans and spread coal around the rest of the SEC, I hope you are gearing up for the start of a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy the time with your family if you have it!

In the sports world, the big news is that UT men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes collected his 700th win. By now that really isn’t news, but it is worth a big congratulations. From me, sure, but it means a lot more from those involved in a video shared by Volunteer basketball on Twitter.

Rae Burrell led the Lady Vols to an 88-61 win over Portland State over the weekend. She scored a career high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, missing a double-double by just a hair. They will play again when Howard visits UT on Dec. 29.

That’s all I have for you. Have a safe and happy holiday! And once again, you don’t just have to take my word for it.

Lady Vols rout Portland State

Lady Vols rout Portland State.

PORTLAND — The Lady Vols closed out their West Coast trip with a big victory at Portland State Saturday night.

Tennessee, which started fast out of the gate before enduring a slump midway through the first quarter, notched an 88-61 win over the Vikings.

The Lady Vols (9-2) opened a 9-0 lead out of the gate before getting a bit sloppy and falling behind 19-18 by the end of the first quarter.

But UT, which lost to top-ranked Stanford 78-51 Wednesday night in Palo Alto, outscored Portland State (6-4) 22-7 in the second quarter.

The Lady Vols shot 51 percent from the floor and were able to overcome 17 turnovers with a balanced scoring attack.

Rae Burrell led Tennessee with 21 points. Jordan Horston added a career-high 20 points. Rennia Davis had 18 and Tamari Key finished with 11 points.

The Lady Vols will take an eight-day break for Christmas before returning to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 29 when they welcome Howard to Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
