Where Florida stands in the KenPom rankings after beating Missouri

After an important win over Missouri for the Florida Gators, the KenPom ratings have Florida as one of the most efficient defensive teams in the country.

Florida might not have received any votes in the latest AP Top 25 or Coaches Poll updates, but the Gators aren’t doing too poorly on the 2023 Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings (KenPom).

UF sits at No. 44 on the rankings and has relied on solid defensive play to get there. The Gators have an adjusted offensive efficiency of 107.0, which is only good for 110th in the country, and an adjusted defensive rating of 92.3, which ranks 14th overall. The difference between the two, +14.72, is what the KenPom ratings boil down to and why Florida is more favored, so to speak, on this list compared to others.

Florida plays a fairly difficult schedule. In fact, it’s the 26th toughest schedule in Division I hoops, according to KenPom. The non-conference strength of schedule isn’t quite as bad at No. 78 overall, but that’s still a tough draw for a team with a first-year coach and in the middle of a rebuild.

It hasn’t been the easiest season for Gators fans, but the numbers suggest they shouldn’t give up just yet. [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] has put together one of the better defensive teams in the country, in terms of efficiency, and the Gators have had some pretty bad luck too. No, really, Florida’s luck rating ranks in the bottom 11% of all 358 D-I programs considered.

The Gators can improve their numbers this week with efficient wins against Texas A&M and Mississippi State.

Florida basketball ranked in the preseason Pomeroy Rankings

The Gators cracked the preseason top 25, according to Ken Pomeroy.

Florida’s 2020-21 basketball season ended with a sour taste. After just barely getting by Virginia Tech in the first round, the Gators were upset by a No. 15 seed in Oral Roberts in the second round. It was yet another first-weekend NCAA Tournament exit for coach Mike White, who enters his seventh season facing some pressure.

The team lost six players during the offseason between the transfer portal and the NBA draft, but it reloaded with its own solid haul of transfers. The Gators lineup this year will largely feature a hodgepodge group of new faces, but they do bring quite a bit of starting experience to Gainesville.

It’s likely this experience that has earned Florida some hype coming into the 2021 season, including from the preseason rankings from Ken Pomeroy, who has UF ranked No. 25 right now.

Only four SEC teams rank higher: No. 13 Tennessee, No. 15 Arkansas, No. 17 Kentucky and No. 19 Alabama. Meanwhile, the Gators are just one spot behind rival Florida State, who it has never beaten in White’s six seasons.

This year’s hoops team will almost certainly look very different than last year’s did, but it’s a talented group that brings a breadth of experience. The only question will be whether this group can gel together cohesively, especially in an ascending SEC.

Ohio State is the best basketball team in the country according to KenPom

The Ohio State Buckeyes are now the top team in the country according to the widely-respected Pomeroy rankings.

According to the widely-respected Ken Pomery ratings, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team is the top team in the country. The Buckeyes were No. 2 behind Louisville after thumping North Carolina last week. Now, though, after another decisive victory over a solid team (KenPom has the Nittany Lions at No. 26 currently), the Buckeyes are the top team in the country.

Pomeroy has the Buckeyes as the fifth-best offense in the country (opponent-adjusted efficiency) and the second-best defense. The Buckeyes are the only team in the Top 5 in both metrics, and trail only overall No. 10 Virginia in defensive efficiency. (It should not surprise anyone that Virginia is the best defense in the country, and by a decent margin.) It’s might be a mild surprise to Ohio State fans, but KenPom does think that the Buckeyes play one of the slowest paces in the country–as his ratings have Ohio State outside the Top 300 in opponent-adjusted Tempo.

The Buckeyes still trail Duke in ESPN’s BPI ratings, though that should change shortly as well. Ohio State was No. 6 in the human rankings coming into this week, but it will be shocking if the Buckeyes are anything less than No. 2 (potentially behind Louisville) when the new polls come out in a few days.

Ohio State’s next major test is against KenPom No. 7 Kentucky in Las Vegas on Saturday, December 21st.
