Kratos voice actor says ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ delay happened because of him

Lingering health issues got in the way of Christopher Judge returning to the role.

God of War: Ragnarok was going to come out this year until it got hit with a delay, and Christopher Judge, the voice responsible for Kratos, says he’s to blame. In a heartfelt confession, Judge explained that some severe health issues prevented him from taking up the role again sooner.

“I need to be forthcoming. This has been approved by no one,” Judge said on Twitter. “To the beloved fandom, Ragnarok was delayed because of me. August 2019, I couldn’t walk. Had to have back surgery, both hips replaced, and knee surgery. [Santa Monica Studio] waited for me to rehab.”

Judge continued: “No threats, no ‘who do you think you are?’ Nothing but love and support. And Santa Monica Studio has never said a word about the delay, and what caused it.”

Judge went on further to explain how Sony Santa Monica only ever supported him during the whole ordeal. And that the team behind God of War: Ragnarok is putting every fiber of their beings into it. Cory Barlog, game director of God of War 2018, had some touching words for Judge as well.

What a wholesome revelation, props to Judge for being so honest! God of War: Ragnarok looked brilliant at the PlayStation Showcase, so the wait will likely be worth it.

‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ will be darker than the first, according to those involved

Venom is arguably Spidey’s archenemy, so this adds up.

If you were expecting a light-hearted romp in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it might be time to adjust those expectations. Bill Rosemann, creative vice president at Marvel Entertainment, claims Insomniac’s sequel will be darker than the first — drawing comparisons to The Empire Strikes Back.

“If the first Spider-Man game was Star WarsSpider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire,” Rosemann said on the This Week in Marvel podcast. “It gets a little darker.”

It’s not surprising that the tone of this game would be much bleaker. During Sony’s  PlayStation Showcase, the trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had a sinister vibe. Rewatch it for yourself below and tell me it couldn’t be mistaken for a damn horror game.

Roseman also lightly teased Marvel’s Wolverine release date information, which Insomniac is also making. Unsurprisingly, he gave said next to nothing about it, though.

“We will eventually reveal when Marvel’s Wolverine is aimed to launch,” Rosemann said. “For more, go back and study those trailers. They are packed with details and Easter eggs!”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 isn’t due out until 2023 at the earliest. So it’ll be a good long while before we find out if Rosemann’s teasing is accurate. It would be a welcome change, for sure. While the Spider-Man comics and films have dealt with a heavy subject matter, the many video games have not.

Here are the PlayStation Plus free games for October 2021

Mortal Kombat X, PGA Tour 2K21, and Let Hell Loose are free for PS Plus subscribers this month.

Well, it’s about time for a new round of free games courtesy of PlayStation Plus, and the offerings for October 2021 are looking mighty appealing. Whether you’re into chill times on the golf course, experiencing an epic theater of war, or cracking-skulls in otherwordly martial arts tournaments, PlayStation is here with the goods whether you’re on PS4 or PS5.

Please note that while the PS4 games are playable on PS5 via backward compatibility, you obviously can’t play PS5 titles on PS4. That kinda goes without saying, but just a heads up as one of these games is not available on PS4.

The PlayStation Plus games for October 2021 are:

Let Hell Loose (PS5) — A multiplayer tactical first-person shooter set in some of World War II’s most iconic battles on the Eastern and Western fronts. Over 100 players compete in 50v50 matches with 14 different roles, loads of different armor types, authentic weaponry, and equipment.

PGA Tour 2K21 (PS4) — Wanna prove you’ve got what it takes to be a PGA champion? Well, you can in this staggeringly realistic pro golfing simulation. Create your character and compete against other players of golf’s most famous real-world courses.

Mortal Kombat X (PS4) — This classic fighting game allows you to pit Jason Voorhees from Friday The 13th against iconic characters like Scorpion, Sub Zero, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade. Brimming with content and fantastic guest characters, this is a must-play for anyone that loves a good, messy brawl.

Thor from ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ represents peak performance says powerlifting champion

You may not like it, but this is literally what peak performance looks like.

Ever since God of War: Ragnarok made its gameplay debut during the PlayStation Showcase, the internet won’t stop talking about Thor. No, not Chris Hemsworth — the deity from Norse mythology. Mainly because, well, he’s a heavy-set dude, and some mean-spirited fans claim it’s an unrealistic depiction of a warrior. However, three-time powerlifting champion Darren McCormac strongly disagrees.

“Like it or not, God of War’s Thor is the peak of male performance,” McCormac said via TheSixthAxis. “Why do I say that? As a strength athlete, there is a correlation between bulk and strength. In powerlifting, the most competitive classes are the under 100kg and under 110kg – guys who are lifting multiple times their own bodyweight. These are big men. 100kg is 16 stone, 110kg is nearly 18 stone. They won’t be tall, they’ll be bulky.”

McCormac continued: “The guys lifting the biggest weights will often be in the under 125kg class, but not all these guys will have abs, far from it. They’ll have a layer of lard over it, a power belly. Any old fool can get abs – yes I am looking at you, Mr Hemsworth – but a power belly and big traps (the muscles either side of your neck) are the sign of a bloody strong man.”

Setting aside how silly it is to argue about realism in God of War: Ragnarok  cause, well, half the cast are literal gods, it’s pretty cool to see someone like McCormac set the record straight. Thor will be a big boy in this game, and that’s awesome.

The 10 most hype trailers and reveals from Sony’s PlayStation Showcase

Would you rather thwip across New York or clash swords with Norse gods?

Excitement going into Sony’s PlayStation Showcase was damn near palpable, and somehow, the show managed to meet expectations. For the most part, anyway.

Sure, it would have been nice to catch a teaser for Final Fantasy XVI, but it’s hard to complain when the likes of God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had magnificent showings. There were plenty of great surprises too. Like, who could have predicted a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was going to debut at this show? Or better yet, Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, which is being co-developed by Epic Games and fricking Radiohead!? Yes, as in the band!

Considering the embarrassment of riches that was this show, FTW’s Mary Clarke and GLHF’s Kyle Campbell decided to list the wildest and straight-up best trailers from the PlayStation Showcase.

Developers and the gaming world mourn a ‘God of War’ gameplay engineer

George Mawle is best known for his work on the game’s Leviathan Axe.

God of War wouldn’t be considered a modern-day classic without the contributions of George Mawle, a gameplay engineer who sadly passed away on Thursday.

Working at Sony Santa Monica during God of War’s development as a programmer, Mawle was responsible for everything from enemy combat behaviors to making weapons feel satisfying. Particularly the universally adored Leviathan Axe, which many of Mawle’s co-workers claimed wouldn’t be the same without his efforts.

“If you’ve ever enjoyed throwing and recalling the Leviathan Axe or twirling the chains of the Blades of Chaos in God of War,” Mihir Sheth, combat design lead at Sony Santa Monica, said via Twitter. “Please take a moment to recognize that it was possible in large part to the engineering and energy of George Mawle, who sadly passed away on September 2nd, 2021.”

Sheth continued: “There’s much more I can say, as I’m sure is the case with many other people he’s worked with. I’d welcome others to share in the comments. Games are made by people, and we all lost a great one on Thursday. We’ll miss you big guy.”

A number of Sony Santa Monica developers left some moving words in Mawle’s memory.

It’s quite touching to see Mawle’s co-workers take the time to honor their late friend. Rest in peace, king.

Sony will offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades for ‘Horizon Forbidden West’ after all

If you buy the game on PS4, there will be no extra cost to update to the PS5 version!

Sony has decided to walk back its decision on Horizon Forbidden West’s paid PS4 to PS5 upgrade options, as now the entire process is free for everyone. This change came about after the company received some criticism due to a prior statement claiming there would be no extra cost in upgrading from the game’s PS4 version to PS5.

On Saturday, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan updated the initial PlayStation Blog post about Horizon Forbidden West preorders with a statement.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West,” Ryan said on the PlayStation Blog. “While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

Check out Ryan’s complete statement for yourself below.

However, later in the same post, Ryan confirms that other first-party cross-generation exclusives like God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 will not be free. Instead, there will be a $10 fee to upgrade from PS4 to PS5.

‘Horizon Forbidden West’ will not be upgradeable from PS4 to PS5

If you want both versions, you’ll have to pay a lot more.

Horizon Forbidden West will not have a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade option. There are purchase options that will give you both versions of the game, but things get expensive and confusing fast.

“For players looking to have access to both the PS4 & PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, please purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions,” Sony said on the PlayStation Blog. “Dual entitlement does not apply to the standard and Special Editions.”

So to even get access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, fans need to spend at least $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. While this may not sound like a big deal, Sony made some statements in the past about PS4 to PS5 upgrade options for the game that only further add to the confusion.

“No one should be disappointed,” Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President, said via The Washington Post over a year ago when asked about first-party exclusives. “The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice. I’m really quite pleased about the situation.”

A lot of fans aren’t happy about the situation either.

Considering how difficult it is to get a PS5 right now, it’s a shame that Sony isn’t offering free upgrades for fans.

PlayStation just unveiled new ‘Cosmic Red’ and ‘Midnight Black’ controllers for the PS5 and they’re beautiful

PlayStation’s new controllers look incredible

There are still plenty of people struggling to get PlayStation 5’s out there, but at least you’ll be able to get an amazing controller soon.

PlayStation announced two new colorways for the PS5 controller and they look absolutely incredible.

The standard controller is white and black, which is the same color as the system. The new colorways are “cosmic red” and “midnight black” and they both look spectacular. It’s a black on black and red on black look.

PlayStation posted a video on its Twitter account showcasing both colorways off and they’re both extremely clean. They’re totally different from the base design.

Man, those are so good. Can we get the systems in those colors, too? Sheesh.

According to the PlayStation blog, both controllers will go on sale next month with release dates varying by region. They drop on June 11 in the United States and will retail for $69.99.

Hopefully, by then, more people will actually have systems.
