HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 144 overall / No. 9 position / No. 17 in-state

Analysis: Incoming freshman Jerrin Thompson is another product of Texas’ great defensive back recruiting. An early enrollee for the Longhorns this spring, Thompson is another safety in waiting who will get a chance past this season.

A four-star prospect from Lufkin, Texas, Thompson is an athletic player with incredible range and a passion for tackling. His play during his junior season earned him District 8-5A-I defensive MVP. Thompson picked the Longhorns over schools such as Baylor, LSU, TCU, and Oklahoma.

With redshirt season a possibility for Thompson, he will be a guy who has an opportunity to contribute once players in front of him, such as Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster, move on to the NFL. An incredible dynamic and interesting player, Thompson will soon be a key part of the Texas defense.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 218 overall / No. 7 position / No. 23 in-state

Analysis: Much like he was in 2019, Keaontay Ingram is going to be an important part of Texas’ offense in 2020. The junior running back is expected to be one of the best at his position this season, hopefully towards the top of the Big 12 in rushing statistics.

A starter in all 13 games last season, Ingram had 1,095 all-purpose yards last season. His best performance of the season came in the last-second victory over Kansas State, having 139 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

With five-star prospect Bijan Robinson coming into the program, plus Roschon Johnson making the full time switch to running back, there will be competition for carries. As things stand, Ingram will be the No. 1 running back for Mike Yurich until he is proven wrong.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 57 overall / No. 6 position / No. 6 in-state

Analysis: A five-star recruit on the 247Sports composite, B.J. Foster was apart of Tom Herman’s best-ever recruiting class in 2018. After dealing with injuries last season, Foster is ready to have a breakout year and become a top defensive back in the Big 12.

The only issue is Foster broke his hand in early June punching his car in frustration. Luckily, he should be ready to go for the beginning of the season. When he is on the field, he and Caden Sterns should form one of the top safety pairings in all of college football.

A secondary unit that struggled in 2019, Foster should be a bright spot in this upcoming season. There will be a lot of pressure on the position group, needing improvement. With new defensive coordinator Chris Ash, Foster will lead the Texas defense in 2020.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 138 overall / No. 8 position / No. 16 in-state

Analysis: A member of Texas’ 2020 recruiting class, there is a lot of hype for Xavion Alford and what his career is going to be in Austin. A highly recruited prospect, the safety received 43 offers throughout high school.

On the 247Sports composite, Alford was the eighth-ranked safety in the country and a top 25 player in the state of Texas. Gabe Brooks compared him to Eddie Jackson, who has had a successful career in the NFL.

The Longhorns will be loaded at the safety position this season with Caden Sterns and BJ Foster being the main guys for Chris Ash. Alford will be a key member of the defense in a couple years, hopefully continuing the trend of defensive backs being drafted from Texas.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 33 overall / No. 3 position / No. 8 in-state

Analysis: One of the most exciting players on this Texas roster is wide receiver, Jordan Whittington. Injuring himself against Louisiana Tech in the season opener, Whittington took a redshirt season. Now, he is ready to explode for the Longhorns.

Coming out of high school, Whittington was listed as an athlete with the ability to play anywhere on the field. Head coach Tom Herman decided to place him on the offensive side of the ball, specifically at running back.

With the emergence of Roschon Johnson and the signing of Bijan Robinson, Whittington will now be transitioning to wide receiver. He and Jake Smith will be the primary players in the slot, replacing Devin Duvernay. Mike Yurich will be able to use Whittington in many ways, making him the most versatile player in this Texas offense.

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 39 position / No. 112 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 20 position / No. 59 in-state

Analysis: Tight end has been a position of struggle under Tom Herman and Jared Wiley is expected to help in 2020. Playing in 12 games last season, Wiley is ready to have his role expanded this season.

Coming out of high school, Wiley played for Texas High School Football powerhouse Temple. During his freshman season, he played in all 12 games, getting his first career start against Baylor.

His one career catch came in the season finally against Texas Tech, going for 15 yards. Not utilized much last season, Mike Yurich has discussed how important the tight end will be under his offense. Wiley should become a more frequent target for Sam Ehlinger.

Class: Redshirt Senior

Hometown: Houston, Texas

High School: Elsik

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 48 position / No. 93 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star

Analysis: Part of a stacked group in the secondary, senior Chris Brown is going to be a key returning starter for the Longhorns. Playing and starting in 10 games last season, Brown will bring experience to the table for Chris Ash.

Only a three-star prospect coming out of high school, Brown’s role has developed throughout his four years on campus. His redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons, he was a special teams player. Starting last year, his role in the defense grew.

A unit that already has Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster, Brown will have some competition for playing time once again. If all three can remain healthy, the safety position will be set in 2020.

Al’Vonte Woodard, Wide receiver

Height: 6-2 / Weight: 210

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Hometown: Houston, Texas

High School: Lamar

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 197 overall / No. 30 position / No. 21 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 92 overall / No. 17 position / No. 8 in-state

Analysis: Coming into his third season on campus, Woodard has yet to make a huge impact in the Texas offense. After not playing in 2018 due to a broken foot, the former four-star prospect took a redshirt season.

Woodard made his college football debut in the season opener against Louisiana Tech last season. The redshirt freshman only had three catches on the year, going for 28 yards.

Now going into his sophomore season, he is hoping to finally make an impact for the Longhorns. With the wide receiver position being wide open in 2020, Woodard could see playing time in this upcoming season. There will be players ahead of him on the depth chart but could become a role player for Mike Yurich.

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 150 overall / No. 26 position / No. 14 in-state

Analysis: Coming in as a freshman in 2018, Moore was able to play in six games while having seven catches for 53 yards. Then, he suffered a season-ending injury. With some off the field problems occurring before the 2019 season, he took a redshirt.

Moore picked the Longhorns over Texas A&M and Nebraska out of high school and is ready to gain a starting role. With wide receiver being an open position going into 2020, Moore could become a key proponent for Mike Yurich.

Despite dealing with some off the field problems, the redshirt sophomore will be cleared to play this season. With Brennan Eagles being the main receiver, Moore could become a solid No. 2 in this Texas offense. That is if he beats out newcomer Tarik Black.

Marcus Tillman Jr., Linebacker

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 240

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Orlando, Florida

High School: Jones

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 65 position / No. 96 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 32 position / No. 76 in-state

Analysis: Playing in four games last season, Tillman suffered a season-ending injury against Oklahoma State. Since he only played in four games, Tillman was able to take a redshirt year.

Coming out of high school, Tillman was a three-star prospect on both 247Sports and Rivals. Schools such as Clemson, Florida, and Ohio State did extend an offer, but the Longhorns were able to beat the in-state Gators for Tillman’s signature.

An inside linebacker, Texas is shorthanded at the position going into this season. With Chris Ash’s defense switching to a 4-3, the inside linebacking position became an important role. Tillman will have some opportunities to get some playing time behind Juwan Mitchell.
