Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 44 Tyler Owens

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at sophomore S Tyler Owens.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at sophomore safety Tyler Owens.

Tyler Owens, Safety

Height: 6-2 / Weight: 205

Class: Sophomore

Hometown: Plano, Texas

High School: Plano East

HS ranking (247Sports): Five-star / No. 24 overall / No. 3 position / No. 4 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 62 overall / No. 6 position / No. 11 in-state

Analysis: While Tyler Owens was a five-star recruit on 247Sports, he was only a four-star on their composite. He joined Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster as five-star safeties on Texas’ roster. Coming out of Plano, Texas, Owens was the Longhorns’ fifth-highest recruit in the 2019 class.

The safety played in all 13 games last season, getting one start against TCU. He totaled eight tackles but was not able to force any turnovers. Most of his production from 2020 was on special teams.

Owens will have to fight for playing time again this season, going up against B.J. Foster to line up across from Caden Sterns. Safety is Texas’ deepest position going into the 2020 season and even if one of the stars goes down, players such as Owens will be able to step in and not miss a beat.

Today, we will be looking at senior defensive end Marqez Bimage.

Marqez Bimage, Defensive end

Height: 6-2 / Weight: 270

Class: Senior

Hometown: Brenham, Texas

High School: Brenham

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 34 position / No. 73 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 27 position / No. 44 in-state

Analysis: One of the more experienced players on Texas’ defense, Marqez Bimage is entering his senior season. Coming out of high school, the defensive end was a three-star on the 247Sports composite and a top 75 player in the state of Texas.

Bimage did not get a start last season but did play in all 13 games. He had 12 tackles (10 of which were solo), a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Sitting behind Malcolm Roach on the depth chart, Bimage was a solid rotational player for Tom Herman.

Going into the 2020 season, much of the same will be asked of Bimage. Ta’Quon Graham is expecting to take over as the starter opposite of Joseph Ossai. The position the Longhorns struggled the most at last season, Bimage will be looking to improve the unit by producing a couple of sacks.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 40 Ayodele Adeoye

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at RS soph LB Ayodele Adeoye.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt sophomore linebacker Ayodele Adeoye.

Ayodele Adeoye, Linebacker

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 245

Class: Redshirt Sophomore

Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.

High School: IMG Academy [Fla.]

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 104 overall / No. 6 position / No. 16 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 12 position / No. 46 in-state

Analysis: Going into his third year in the Longhorns’ program, Ayodele Adeoye is slowly emerging as an important player for the defense. After picking up a season-ending injury in 2018 and taking a redshirt, Ayodele had a solid 2019.

However, once again, Ayodele is dealing with an injury. Back in January, the linebacker sustained a foot injury and opted for surgery. This kept Adeoye out of spring practice. He was expected to return to summer workouts before the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Adeoye appeared in all 13 games last season while earning a start in 10 of them. He had 45 tackles (fifth on the team), 2.5 sacks, and an interception. The inside linebacker position has talent for the Longhorns but it needs to come through with results. Adeoye can be that man going into his redshirt sophomore season.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 39 Montrell Estell

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at junior S Montrell Estell.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at junior safety Montrell Estell.

Montrell Estell, Safety

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 200

Class: Junior

Hometown: Hooks, Texas

High School: Hooks

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 181 overall / No. 8 position / No. 24 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 38 position / No. 49 in-state

Analysis: Coming out of high school, Montrell Estell was an athlete, playing both defensive back and wide receiver. Once arriving on campus, Todd Orlando made him a full-time defensive player, placing him at the safety position.

Estell started to get real playing time as a sophomore last season, appearing in all 13 games. He started against Oklahoma State and TCU, picking up an interception against the Cowboys. Estell added eight tackles (seven unassisted) in Stillwater, a career-high.

The safety position is a loaded one for the Longhorns, having Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster locking down the starting spots. When they are not of the field, Estell is as good as it gets in the rotation. Going into his junior season, Texas will continue to trust him more often,

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 38 Kobe Boyce

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at JR cornerback Kobe Boyce.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at junior cornerback Kobe Boyce.

Kobe Boyce, Cornerback

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 175

Class: Junior

Hometown: Corinth, Texas

High School: Lake Dallas

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 53 position / No. 64 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 45 position / No. 74 in-state

Analysis: A starter at the beginning of last season, Kobe Boyce was a victim to the depth the Longhorns have at the defensive back position. While he did play in all 13 games, there were too many quality cornerbacks throughout the depth chart.

Despite not getting starts, Boyce still was a key contributor throughout the rotation. His five pass breakups were the most on the team in 2019. Much of the same will be expected of him going into his junior season.

Just as it was last season, Texas’ depth at cornerback is going to be deep. Even with Anthony Cook in the transfer portal, players such as D’Shawn Jamison, Jalen Green, Chris Adimora, and Kenyatta Watson will be competing for playing time. Boyce’s contributions when playing will be a key part of a secondary that needs improvement.

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at senior DE Jacoby Jones.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at senior defensive lineman Jacoby Jones.

Jacoby Jones, Defensive line

Height: 6-4 / Weight: 265

Class: Senior

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

High School: McCluer North

JUCO ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 32 overall / No. 2 position / No. 6 in-state

JUCO ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 16 overall

Analysis: A junior college transfer, Jacoby Jones came from Butler Community College in Kansas. Choosing Texas over Oklahoma, the Longhorns have gotten a good rotational piece out of Jones.

In his one season for Tom Herman, the 6-4 265 pound defensive end produced 14 tackles and one forced fumble in 11 games. His best game of the season came in the opener against Louisiana Tech, forcing the fumble and logging four tackles.

With players such as Ta’Quon Graham and Marquez Bimage ahead of him, Jones Jones is expected to play the same role. The Longhorns are moving to a four man front, so his playing time could see an increase in playing time. A position which needs to improve, Jones will provide great depth for Chris Ash.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 33 David Gbenda

LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster. Today, we will be looking at RS-fresh LB David Gbenda.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt freshman linebacker David Gbenda.

David Gbenda, Linebacker

Height: 6-0 / Weight: 225

Class: Redshirt freshman

Hometown: Katy, Texas

High School: Cinco Ranch

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 193 overall / No. 11 position / No. 23 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 219 overall / No. 14 position / No. 28 in-state

Analysis: David Gbenda played in four games last season, seeing action against Louisiana Tech, LSU, Rice, and Kansas. The true freshman even got a start against the Jayhawks. While he did not record a single stat in 2019, Gbenda played an important role.

The Longhorns struggled with depth at the running back position last year and Gbenda was a huge help. Even though he did not get playing time on the offensive side of the ball, he got plenty of reps during practice. An emergency ball carrier, Tom Herman said he would have performed well if given the chance.

Now moving back to linebacker in 2020, Gbenda is expected to stay on the defensive side of the ball this season. With questions surrounding players such as Juwan Mitchell and DeMarvion Overshown, Gbenda could find himself with significant playing time this season.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at senior running back Daniel Young.

Daniel Young, Running back

Height: 6-0 / Weight: 215

Class: Senior

Hometown: Houston, Texas

High School: Westfield

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 38 position / No. 85 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 38 position / No. 97 in-state

Analysis: As a freshman, Daniel Young was able to come in and make an immediate impact, starting the final five games of the season and totaling 373 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Ever since then, his production has decreased, thanks to increased talent at the position.

Young saw action in eight games in 2019 but only managed 63 yards on 16 carries. With the roles of Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson increased, Young was getting fewer and fewer carries.

Now, five-star recruit Bijan Robinson is going to be on campus, ready to compete for a starting role. Because of this, Young could be an odd man out as far as the running back rotation goes. At the very least, he will be the most experienced ball carrier for the Longhorns in 2020.

Today, we will be looking at junior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

DeMarvion Overshown, Linebacker

Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

Height: 6-4 / Weight: 215

Class: Junior

Hometown: Arp, Texas

High School: Arp

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 28 overall / No. 1 position / No. 2 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 144 overall / No. 12 position / No. 13 in-state

Analysis: DeMarvion Overshown is another player who will be switching positions in Chris Ash’s new defense. He was recruited and played the past two seasons as a safety but now is expected to fill in as a linebacker.

His 6-4 and 215-pound build shows he does have the size and strength to play in the front seven. The only issue? Overshown has stated he will not be participating in team-related activities. The junior is still frustrated with the University of Texas’ response to the player’s requests back in June.

If Overshown does play for the Longhorns this season, he is going to be a crucial part of the renovation of the defense. He and Juwan Mitchell are expected to lead an inexperienced linebacking group. Hopefully, Overshown and the University can sort of their differences so he can play this season.

Longhorns Profile Snapshot: No. 9 Josh Thompson

LonghornsWire will look at each scholarship player listed on the UT roster. Today, we look at RS-junior CB Josh Thompson.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will look at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role he will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt junior cornerback Josh Thompson.

Josh Thompson, Cornerback

Height: 6-0 / Weight: 200

Class: Redshirt Junior

Hometown: Nacogdoches, Texas

High School: Nacogdoches

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 33 position / No. 45 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 40 position / No. 54 in-state

Analysis: Recently changing his number from No. 29 to No. 9, Josh Thompson is a fourth-year player coming off an injury in 2019. After playing in the first four games of the season, Thompson took a redshirt season to maintain his two years of eligibility.

As a sophomore, Thompson appeared in 13 games and started against Tulsa, USC, and West Virginia. He had 22 tackles while forcing one pass breakup. Also contributing on special teams, his role was supposed to grow before his injury.

The redshirt junior will enter the 2020 season as a backup to D’Shawn Jamison and Jalen Green. Thompson could also contribute at nickelback. One of the deepest position groups on the roster, Thompson will help a loaded secondary this year.
