Notre Dame wins over teams at least eight games above .500 since 2018

The Irish haven’t had many recent wins like the one against Virginia.

In a season that figures to have few true highlights, Notre Dame had one Saturday. Virginia entered Purcell Pavilion with a 10-2 record and having received votes in the most recent Top 25 poll. That didn’t matter to the young Irish because they crushed the Cavaliers, 76-54. If anyone tells you they saw that coming, they’re lying.

This wasn’t only an upset against a quality program and Micah Shrewsberry’s first ACC win. It represented a rarity for Notre Dame in recent years. The Cavaliers’ record coming into this game meant they were eight games above .500. Since the Irish last made consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2015 to 2017, they have beaten opponents who were at least eight games above .500 coming in only seven times.

So forgive the Irish if they go a little over the top in celebrating this latest such instance. This doesn’t happen to them very much these days, so they definitely are cause for celebration every time. Here are the most recent of these occurrences:

What the experts are predicting: Sun Bowl

What’s your pick for this game?

Notre Dame and Oregon State will face each other in a Sun Bowl that already is giving a real boost to the economy of El Paso, Texas. The least these teams can do is give the locals a thriller in a sold-out stadium. With so many regulars on both sides missing, that might happen purely on accident. This will be a must-watch.

There are plentiful predictions for this game. Here are some of them:

Wisconsin officially announces future game vs. Pittsburgh in Ireland

Wisconsin football officially announced a future game in Dublin, Ireland earlier today. That will be a contest against Pittsburgh in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic to open the 2027 season.

So Badgers fans who’ve seen Nebraska vs Northwestern in Ireland in recent years and longed to make the trip, the date is now officially on the books.

In a way, it will be the Paul Chryst Cup. Chryst was the head coach at Pittsburgh for three seasons before coming back to Wisconsin and beginning his successful tenure. Chryst is now an offensive analyst at Texas after being fired at Wisconsin last season, so who knows where he’ll be in 2027. But he remains the only big connection between these two programs.

Wisconsin’s 2027 schedule will include this game against Pittsburgh, plus home conference game against Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State and UCLA, and road games against Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota and USC.
