Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh Pirates odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Tampa Bay Rays (37-40) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (37-39) wrap up a 3-game interleague series Sunday at PNC Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Rays vs. Pirates odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Tied 1-1

The Pirates picked up a 4-3 victory on Saturday as a slight underdog (-106) to level the series 1-1, setting up a rubber game on Sunday afternoon. The Rays won the series opener 10-3 Friday night, cashing as a slight favorite (-127) as the Over (9) cashed.

Tampa Bay had a 3-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, but it is still a respectable 4-2 in the past 6 games, including 5-0 on the run line as an underdog, including 3 outright wins. The Over is 6-2 in the past 8 games for the Rays.

The Bucs are a solid 4-2 in the previous 6 contests, but they’re just 1-3 straight-up in the past 4 times as a favorite. Pittsburgh is also just 1-5 in the past 6 as a favorite on the run line. The Under is on a 5-1 run for the Pirates, while going 11-3 in the past 14 contests.

Rays at Pirates projected starters

RHP Aaron Civale vs. RHP Paul Skenes

Civale (2-5, 5.42 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.39 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 9.3 K/9 in 76 1/3 IP.

  • 2024 road splits: 1-2, 6.75 ERA (33 1/3 IP, 25 ER), 1.71 WHIP, .308 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 4 HR, 13 BB, 29 K in 7 starts

Skenes (4-0, 2.29 ERA) makes his 8th start. He has a 0.99 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9 and 12.1 K/9 in 39 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 7 K in 4-1 home victory vs. Cincinnati Reds last Monday
  • 2024 home splits: 2-0, 3.43 ERA (21 IP, 8 ER), 1.38 WHIP, .286 OBA, 3 HR, 5 BB, 25 K in 4 starts

  • Over/Under (O/U): 7.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Rays at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Pirates 5, Rays 2

Moneyline

The PIRATES (-160) are a solid play behind the rookie Skenes in this matinee action.

While the Bucs are a little on the chalky side, and Skenes actually has much better splits on the road than at home, he and the Pirates are a solid play against the struggling Rays (+135).

Tampa Bay has been contending in recent seasons, but it is 3 games under .500 and struggling to stay out of the basement in the AL East this season.

Run line/Against the spread

The PIRATES -1.5 (+125) are worth a look, if you’re a little less conservative. At plus-money, the Bucs are a nice play behind Skenes, especially since Civale has been so giving on the road this season for the Rays +1.5 (-155).

Over/Under

UNDER 7.5 (-105) is a strong play, mainly because Skenes is on the bump in this series finale. The risk is with Civale, as he has a 6.75 ERA in 33 1/3 IP. The total has ended up going low in 5 of the past 8 games for the Rays with Civale on the bump.

For the Pirates, the Under is 5-1 in the past 6 games, and 11-3 in the past 14 contests. With Skenes on the hill, the Over cashed in his first 5 starts, with the Bucs scoring 45 runs of offensive support. The Under is 2-0 in his past 2 outings, with the Pirates outscoring the opposition 6-2.

Tampa Bay has won 3 consecutive games, while the Pirates are 1-2 in their last 3 outings.

Rays at Pirates projected starters

RHP Zach Eflin vs. RHP Jared Jones

Eflin (3-4, 4.12 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.17 WHIP, 0.6 BB/9 and 6.9 K/9 in 74 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 7 K in 8-6 win at Atlanta Braves Sunday

Rays at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Rays 3, Pirates 2

Moneyline

BET RAYS (-105).

Tampa Bay is 3-0 in its last 3 games, while the Pirates are only 1-2. The Rays are also 6-4 in their last 10 games, while Pittsburgh is 5-5. Tampa Bay has won 7 straight games vs. Pittsburgh and is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

I like the Pirates to cover here, as I don’t see them getting blown out in back-to-back home games vs. Tampa Bay, but the line is too risky to bet on as set at +1.5 (-190). Bet on the moneyline and/or O/U instead.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8 (-105).

The Under has hit in 4 of Pittsburgh’s last 5 games and is 8-2 in its last 10. For Pittsburgh, the Under is also 3-1 in its last 4 home games. The Under has hit in 3 of the last 4 Rays-Pirates matchups in Pittsburgh and is 6-3-1 in the last 10 meetings overall.

Be aware that the Over is 6-4 in Pittsburgh’s last 10 outings.

Pittsburgh has now won back-to-back games after covering as a -179 home favorite on Monday. SS Oneil Cruz led the way on offense for the Pirates with 2 RBIs while RHP Paul Skenes allowed 1 ER in 6 IP for the win.

Reds at Pirates projected starters

LHP Nick Lodolo vs. RHP Bailey Falter

Lodolo (7-2, 2.93 ERA) makes his 11th start. He has a 1.06 WHIP, 2.31 BB/9 and 9.57 K/9 in 58 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 K in 4-2 win against Cleveland Guardians Wednesday.

Reds at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Reds 4, Pirates 3

Moneyline

BET REDS (-125).

The Reds have scored 4 or more runs in 5 of their last 10 games and face a pitcher who has historically struggled against them. They had just 1 less hit than the Pirates on Monday and rightfully struggled to score against the young phenom Skenes. With Cincinnati’s best pitcher taking the mound on Tuesday, it will have a great opportunity to snap its losing streak.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

There is no value on the run line in this game.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8 (+100).

Cincinnati and Pittsburgh have each hit the Under 8 times in their last 10 games. The Reds have scored 4 or fewer runs in 8 of their last 10 games while allowing 4 or fewer runs in 7 of their last 10. Pirates at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Pirates 4, Cardinals 3

Moneyline

LEAN PIRATES (-110).

The Pirates are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings overall and 3-2 in the last 5 in St. Louis. Pittsburgh is also the slightly hotter team overall at 6-4 in its last 10 games, while the Cardinals are only 5-5 in their last 10.

This is a very slight lean, as Pittsburgh is only 1-2 in its last 3 road games, while St. Louis is 2-1 in its last 3 at home.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

I like the Cardinals to cover here as +1.5 (-185) underdogs, but the line is set too high to risk betting on. Bet on the moneyline and/or O/U instead.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8.5 (-110).

The Under has hit in 3 straight for St. Louis and is 4-2 in its last 6 home games. For Pittsburgh, the Under is 4-1 in its last 5 games. The Under has also hit in back-to-back Pittsburgh-St. Louis matchups and is 6-4 in the last 10 meetings.

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Pittsburgh Pirates (31-34) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (31-33) Tuesday in the opener of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium at 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Pirates vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Pirates won 9-4 last year

The Pirates had Monday off after completing a 4-2 homestand in which they took 2 each from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins. Rookie phenom RHP Paul Skenes toes the rubber Tuesday. He’s still unbeaten and has 38 K’s in 27 IP so far. He has given up 5 ER and 3 HRs in 11 IP over his last 2 starts, though. That’s something to keep an eye on as the league gets more tape on him.

The Cards opened their homestand with a 4-game split with the Colorado Rockies. They have scored 5+ runs in 5 of 8 games. After a miserable start to the season offensively, they’re now tied for 21st with 4 runs/game. SS Masyn Winn has been a catalyst atop the order, hitting .306 with 3 HR, 23 RBIs and 8 steals.

Pirates at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Paul Skenes vs. RHP Miles Mikolas

Skenes (3-0, 3.00 ERA) makes his 6th start. He has a 1.00 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9 and 12.7 K/9 in 27 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 8 K Wednesday against Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Has never faced Cardinals
  • Home/road splits: Away – 2-0, 1.50 ERA, 0.42 WHIP, 15.0 K/9 in 2 GS; Home – 1-0, 4.20 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 3 GS

Mikolas (4-6, 5.32 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.28 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9 and 6.7 K/9 in 71 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 K Wednesday against Houston Astros
  • Last 5 starts vs. Pirates: 1-2, 3.21 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 21 K in 28 IP

  • Moneyline (ML): Pirates -135 (bet $135 to win $100) | Cardinals +115 (bet $100 to win $115)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Pirates -1.5 (+135) | Cardinals +1.5 (-160)

Pirates at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 5, Pirates 3

Moneyline

I’m a little torn here because I fully expect Skenes to dominate, but he has yet to go past 6 IP in any of his starts. The Pirates have the 6th-worst ERA (4.50) in baseball.

The numbers don’t do it justice, but the Cards’ pen has been a strength. They’re 12th with a 3.71 ERA, but the back end of the pen has been lights out. The Cards get to the Bucs after Skenes exits.

TAKE CARDINALS (+115).

Run line/Against the spread

I don’t like the RL here, but I fully expect Skenes to get close to 10 K’s. I look for the Cards to stack a bunch of lefties with 2B Nolan Gorman and DH Matt Carpenter very K-prone.

TAKE PAUL SKENES OVER 7.5 (+105).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

It’s slated to be 80 degrees with a humidity expected to push close to 60% through the evening. The wind is a non-factor, blowing right-to-left at 3 mph.

The Cards are 4-5-1 O/U over their last 10, and the Pirates are 6-4. The Over is also 6-4 in the last 10 meetings.

Mikolas has a 5+ ERA, but he has a 2.40 ERA over his last 5 starts. He’ll keep the Cards in the game until the Pirates’ bullpen runs out there. This total is too small for me, though. If it swells any higher, I’m probably out, but I’ll TAKE OVER 7.5 (-105).

Minnesota Twins at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Minnesota Twins at Pittsburgh Pirates odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Minnesota Twins (33-29) and Pittsburgh Pirates (29-33) begin a 3-game series Friday. First pitch from PNC Park is slated for 6:40 p.m. ET (Apple TV+). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Twins vs. Pirates odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Twins won 2 of 3 in 2023

Minnesota was swept by the New York Yankees after falling 8-5 on Thursday night. They were outscored 22-11 in the 3-game series in the Bronx. RHP Pablo Lopez was knocked around for 7 ER, lasting only 4 innings. The Twins got solo shots from SS Carlos Correa and C Christian Vazquez. They are 2-4 during their current 9-game road trip, which concludes in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates failed to complete the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night, falling 11-7. LHP Bailey Falter struggled through 4 innings, giving up 5 ER on 8 hits. SS Oneil Cruz had a big night in the loss, going 2-for-5 with a 3-run HR. Pittsburgh has won 4 of its last 6 games at PNC Park.

Twins at Pirates projected starters

RHP Joe Ryan vs. RHP Mitch Keller

Ryan (4-4, 3.38 ERA) makes his 13th start. He has a 1.01 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9 and 9.6 K/9 in 72 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 5 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 4 K in 5-2 loss at the Houston Astros Saturday
  • Career vs Pirates: 1-3, 8.53 ERA (19 IP, 18 ER) in 4 starts

Keller (7-3, 3.42 ERA) makes his 13th start. He has a 1.22 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 8.1 K/9 in 73 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 8 K in 8-1 victory at the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday
  • Has won 5 straight decisions
  • Last start vs Twins: Win, 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 12 K in 7-4 road victory on Aug 19, 2023

Twins at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Pirates 5, Twins 2

Moneyline.

BET PIRATES (+108).

I’m pleasantly surprised to see the Pirates getting plus money at home against a struggling Twins team. You should jump all over the Bucs especially with  Keller on the mound. He owned Minnesota last year striking out 12 in 6 innings. Keller has been lights out, allowing a total of 5 ER over his last 5 starts (33 2/3 IP). The Twins are batting only .219 as a team against righties.

The Twins are floundering on this road trip and the Pirates will take advantage of that on Friday night and I have a feeling over the course of this 3-game set.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

I’m putting my unit bet on the moneyline and will avoid the run line.

Over/Under

PASS.

My lean is to the Under (+100) but I don’t see an edge to officially make a recommendation. I’m confident that Keller shuts down this Twins lineup, but I’m worried that the Pirates offense may push the game Over. So, I’ll just stay away.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Pittsburgh Pirates (29-32) meet the Los Angeles Dodgers (38-25) in PNC Park for the finale of their 3-game series Thursday. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Dodgers vs. Pirates odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Pirates lead 2-0

The Pirates kicked off the series with a 1-0 win on Tuesday and then compounded that Wednesday by taking the 2nd game 10-6, covering in both. Pittsburgh used a 7-run 2nd inning to pull away and never looked back.

The Pirates have won 3 of their last 4 games and sit 4th in the NL Central. They are just 3-3 straight up over their last 6 at home. Pittsburgh is 33-27 against the spread (ATS) on the season.

The Dodgers will look to avoid having been swept for just the 2nd time on the season. Los Angeles has won 5 of its last 8 games, yet has lost 5 of its last 8 on the road. The NL West leaders are 32-31 ATS.

Dodgers at Pirates projected starters

RHP Walker Buehler vs. LHP Bailey Falter

Buehler (1-3, 4.32 ERA) makes his 6th start. He has a 1.32 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 8.6 K/9 in 25 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 7 K in a 4-1 home loss to the Colorado Rockies Friday
  • 2024 road splits: 0-2, 6.00 ERA (9 IP, 6 ER), 11 H, 4 HR, 3 BB, 6 K in 2 starts
  • Career vs. Pirates: 2-0, 2.37 ERA (19 IP, 5 ER), 0.90 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 3 starts

Falter (3-2, 3.22 ERA) makes his 12th start. He has a 0.95 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 5.3 K/9 in 64 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K in a 5-3 14-inning road loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Friday
  • 2024 home splits: 2-0, 2.56 ERA (31 2/3 IP, 9 ER), 21 H, 5 HR, 8 BB, 17 K in 5 starts
  • Career vs. Dodgers: 0-0, 0.00 ERA (3 IP, 0 ER), 0.33 WHIP, 3.0 K/9 in 1 relief appearance

Dodgers at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Dodgers 4, Pirates 3

Moneyline

PASS.

The Dodgers are far too expensive on the moneyline here, especially considering they have lost 2 straight and scored a combined 6 runs through those 2 games.

The Pirates aren’t worth a play here, neither is a plus-money home team.

Run line/Against the spread

BET PIRATES +1.5 (+100).

Pittsburgh has a strong pitcher on the mound, one of that has helped the Pirates cover in 3 of his last 4 starts. Pittsburgh is 10-3 ATS as a home underdog on the season and has covered in 4 straight games.

The Dodgers are 5-6 ATS in their last 11 and 2-3 ATS in their last 5. They have also lost 2 straight games in which Buehler has started. Considering those trends, back PIRATES +1.5 (+100).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 9 (-114).

The Pirates have scored 4 or fewer runs in 3 of their last 5 games, going Under the projected total in 2 of their last 5. The Dodgers, on the other hand, are far more prone toward the Under.

They have allowed 1 or 0 runs in 3 of their last 4 and have gone Under the projected total in 8 of their last 10 games, as well as in Buehler’s last 4 starts. With both teams having solid options on the mound, back UNDER 9 (-114).
