A former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick has returned to his alma mater to potentially begin a career in coaching.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the team’s first spring practice, Rice University head coach Mike Bloomgren announced a pair of additions to his coaching staff. One of those additions was former Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines, who will be serving as a defensive assistant working with cornerbacks under CBs coach Gerard Wilcher.

“A couple of new additions that you’ll see out here today,” Bloomgren told media members ahead of practice. “One returning to Rice is Phillip Gaines, after his seven-year career in the NFL. He’ll be out here assisting with our corners.”

Gaines was drafted by Kansas City in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft under then-General Manager John Dorsey. He primarily played slot corner for the Chiefs in Bob Sutton’s defense, but he battled injuries during his time in Kansas City. They really disrupted his development and ability to be a long-term contributor to the team.

Gaines appeared in 41 games over four seasons with the Chiefs, making 16 starts and recording 100 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, 14 passes defended and one interception. He also spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns in 2018. He made his last NFL stop with the Houston Texans from 2019 through 2020.

The other addition announced for the Rice coaching staff was former Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson, who has been hired as the team’s RBs coach.

Texans ran man coverage against Packers WR Davante Adams when CB Bradley Roby was out

The Houston Texans defense decided to play man coverage against Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams when CB Bradley Roby was out with an injury.

The Houston Texans were dealt an unlucky hand early in the first quarter of their 35-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Cornerback Bradley Roby left the game with a knee injury. Filling in for the former Denver Broncos 2014 first-round pick was Phillip Gaines, who is primarily a special teamer.

According to interim coach Romeo Crennel, the Texans didn’t alter their game plan much when Roby went out. In fact, the Texans continued to run man coverage even with Gaines matched up one-on-one with the three-time Pro Bowler.

“We had some man calls after Roby went out, and they didn’t always work the way we anticipated that they were going to work,” Crennel said.

To defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s credit, the Texans did adjust and start to run more zone coverage against the Packers.

“Some of them were zone calls,” Crenne said. “You know, we played some zone, and they were still able to get deep against some of the zone calls as well. But not having your matchup corner and not being able to match up on their best guy, I think it did hurt us.”

Adams caught 13 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns as the Packers got back on track with a 5-1 record, erasing their 38-10 letdown at Tampa Bay from a week ago.

“Well, looks like he played pretty good,” said Crennel. “I think he had a lot of targets and made a lot of yards. So, I’ve got to say he played pretty good.”

The Texans have the bye week coming in Week 8, which will allow them assess where they are at with Roby and the rest of their cornerback group. Gareon Conley, who was supposed to be their lockdown cornerback, is still working through an ankle injury in the offseason that he had to have surgery to repair.

Texans sign former Chargers DB Jaylen Watkins

The Houston Texans have signed former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins on a two-year deal.

The Houston Texans have made their fourth defensive back addition of the free agency window by signing former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins according to James Palmer.

The 28-year-old former fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles joins Bill O’Brien’s side on a two-year $3 million deal after making 14 appearances in 2019. Watkins notched up 23 solo tackles while allowing 24 receptions on 26 targets last season per Pro Football Focus.

A versatile player with experience at both cornerback and safety, he fits O’Brien’s demands to a tee. The Texans coach demands versatility from his players and Watkins will give the side depth in the secondary, something which has at times eluded them the last few years.

Expect to see a lot of Watkins in Brad Seely’s special teams unit and potentially as a backup cornerback behind second-year CB Lonnie Johnson. He will be battling for the spot along with fellow recent signings Phillip Gaines and Vernon Hargraves.
