Texas 1B/3B Peyton Powell signs with Blue Jays

The talented infielder signed a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday after an impressive five-year stint with Texas

Former Longhorns 1B/3B Peyton Powell has found a new home. The talented infielder signed a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday after an impressive five-year stint with Texas. Since making his college debut in 2020, he has been a force at the plate.

In five seasons with the Longhorns, Powell posted a .327 batting average in 588 plate appearances. While he was an on-base machine, the Waco, Texas native also showed some power with 21 home runs and 30 doubles. Regardless of where he was in the order, Powell found a way to get on base and provide the offense with a spark.

Although Powell went undrafted, the Blue Jays made signing him a priority. That was partly due to his bat and versatility in the field. During his time in Austin, he split time between first and third base. He also made four appearances behind the plate.

In Powell, the Blue Jays are getting a player who has proven they get on base at a high rate. He only struck out 83 times in college and was able to draw 77 walks, including 34 during the 2024 campaign. Maintaining good plate discipline will be critical in the minor as the competition improves.

After an impressive run with Texas, the 23-year-old will be looking to build on his success in the minors. If Powell can do that, he could move quickly through the system. For Blue Jays fans, he will be a prospect to watch.

No. 21 Texas downs Texas A&M 5-2 in College Station

No. 21 Texas extended its nation’s best winning streak to 15 games after taking down Texas A&M on the road.

No. 21 Texas extended its nation’s best winning streak to 15 games after taking down Texas A&M on the road. The Longhorns improved to 19-7 on the 2023 season with the 5-2 win.

Texas struck quickly in the first inning as Porter Brown lined a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to put the Horns up. A&M would tally one of their own in the bottom of the first before Texas pitching would settle in.

Five Longhorns pitchers would combine to hold the Aggies lineup to just two runs on six hits. Friday night starter Lucas Gordon tossed a clean inning while Zane Morehouse picked up the save.

Texas’ offense stuck with a nice approach in the batter’s box on a night where extra base hits were hard to come by. The Longhorns recorded 15 hits on the night. The top of the order did most of the damage, as Eric Kennedy, Peyton Powell and Dylan Campbell combined for nine knocks.

The Longhorns look to continue their hot streak this weekend as they travel to No. 17 Oklahoma State for a top-25 matchup.

Texas walks-off No. 14 Texas Tech to secure the series sweep

Garret Guillemette was the hero on Sunday.

Garret Guillemette stepped up to the plate in a tie ballgame after Texas’ bullpen gave up a six-run lead. The Longhorns catcher picked up his pitching staff by launching a no-doubt walk-off home run over the left field wall.

Guillemette’s ninth-inning heroics gave Texas the 9-8 victory and a weekend sweep over No. 14 Texas Tech. In back-to-back games, Texas broke Red Raider hearts with a walk-off victory.

Texas’ bats crushed five home runs in the win. Peyton Powell got the Horns on the board with a two-run shot in the first inning. Powell would add another bomb later in the game.

Freshmen Rylan Galvan and Jared Thomas each went yard to help Texas’ offensive effort.

Texas’ win streak now sits at 14 games following the slow start to the season. David Pirece’s squad now finds themselves knocking on the door of the national rankings.

Texas baseball caps off sweep of New Orleans with 9-3 victory

Texas completes a strong weekend series against New Orleans.

Texas baseball continues its hot streak with a 9-3 victory over New Orleans on Sunday to complete the series sweep.

The Longhorns bats have woken up on the latest homestand after a sluggish start to the season. The top of the Texas lineup especially is swinging it well of late.

Eric Kennedy blasted home runs in his first two at-bats to give Texas an early 2-0 lead. Kennedy may be on his way to conference play of the week honors after hitting five bombs during the week.

Dylan Campbell gave the Horns an exclamation point with a three-run home run in the seventh inning to put Texas up 9-2. Peyton Powell added an RBI and a run scored, going 3-4 on the day.

Longhorn pitching was good yet again, with Lebarron Johnson Jr. getting his first weekend start of the year. Johnson tossed four innings, giving up two runs as the bullpen pieced the rest of the game together.

Texas will host Incarnate Word in a midweek matchup on Tuesday before welcoming in Texas Tech to start Big 12 Conference play.
