Which two Notre Dame 2023 commits On3 believes are underrated

High-end underrated players, yes please

Although the Irish recently lost a commitment from their formerly highest rated player in defensive end Keon Keeley, the 2023 recruiting class is still very highly thought of. The group still ranks as one of the best in the country and there may be a few gems it the group as well. On3 looked at a few recruits who they believe are underrated, and two Notre Dame verbals came up. Find out below which ones and why they believe the industry has them ranked lower than they should be.

2023 Safety Kylin Jackson commits to LSU; What this means for the Aggies

Who does Texas A&M need to focus on going forward after losing out on Kylin Jackson?

Well, as we have seen multiple times in the last two months, the Texas A&M 2023 recruiting class has taken some bumps and bruises, losing a number of in-state and regional recruits to the likes of rivals Texas and LSU.

Today, one of the top safety prospects in the 2023 class, Zachary, Lousiana native Kylin Jackson, chose to stay home, committing to LSU over the Aggies.

It’s never a surprise when LSU keeps their recruits in-state, but with the recent success of Jimbo Fisher and co. in securing some of the best position players on offense and defense in the last two recruiting classes from the Bayou state, this one stings a bit. The question now is who the Aggies need to shift their recruiting focus to for the upcoming fall months, especially with the season only three short weeks away. Throwing in the recent decommitment of cornerback Bravion Rogers, the Aggies are thin at defensive back, with only corner Jayvon Thomas remaining in their 2023 class. Who does this writer think those names need to be? That would be cornerback Javien Toviano, and current Notre Dame commit, safety Peyton Bowen.

Javien Toviano is going into his senior season at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, where during his junor season, he was named a Texas 8-6A first-team all-district selection, while recording 26 tackles, 3 pass breakups and and 1 interception on defense, while rushing for 415 yards and 8 touchdowns on offense. After makin four visits to College Station in the last year, his last visit was on April 9th. In a recent interview with Aggie Scoop from On3, Toviano stated,

“With Texas A&M, I feel like I can just go up there on weekends and just hangout. That’s how homey it feels. And of course, Coach Rushing, Coach Fisher, and Coach Durkin, all those guys are great. Being so close, and just the culture they have. I think it’s awesome there.”

Peyton Bowen is entering his senior season at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, and is currenrly committed to Notre Dame, and was a recent attentendee at the Aggies recruiting pool party on July 30th. As one of the most athletic and dispruptive safety prospects in the class, Bowen is coming off of a 2021 junior season where he tallyed 59 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and 6 interpections on the season, rising up the recruting ranks as the 5th ranked safety in the class. In another recent interview with On3 regarding his latest visit to Texas A&M, and what appeals to him the most, Bowen stated,

“I really like the relationship with Durkin and the whole recruiting staff. And the education too, that really good, and the alumni base is strong.

On his latest conversation with Jimbo Fisher:

“He tells me that they’re going to take care of me and that they have everything I will need. He also tells me that they’re low at the position and he needs me.”

The Aggies 2022 schedule is composed of three straight weeks at Kyle Field, which gives the recruiting staff ample opportunity to invite Toviano and and Bowen to multiple games, and keep the communication channels open during the season.

For second day in a row Notre Dame lands 2023 defensive commitment

What does this class still need to add in your eyes?

Notre Dame has ended the work-week strong in terms of recruiting as Friday saw them land a commitment on the defensive side of the football for the second day in a row in regards to the 2023 class.

Thursday it was four-star linebacker [autotag]Jaiden Ausberry[/autotag] who they pulled from the literal shadows of LSU’s Tiger Stadium in earning a commitment.  Friday it was a recent Ohio offer that announced he’d be playing football at Notre Dame.

[autotag]Ben Minich[/autotag], a three-star safety from Cincinnati announced it was Notre Dame for him Friday, choosing the Irish over Cincinnati, Duke, and Wake Forest as finalists.

Minich checks in at 5-11.5, 185-pounds and is about to get his senior season underway at Lakota High School in Cincinnati.  He had roughly 25 scholarship offers in full, including from Power Five programs Iowa State, Oklahoma, Purdue, Indiana, and Wisconsin just to name a few.

Minich adds depth at safety in the 2023 class as he’s the third at the position to commit.  He joins [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag] in the class, providing valuable insurance if one of those is to ultimately change their college decision.

Notre Dame now has the top ranked recruiting class in 2023 according to 247Sports as the Irish edge Alabama by a nose.  Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, and Oklahoma round out the top six.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Notre Dame hope it doesn’t take long for commitment number-23 to come in as the Irish are a finalist for running back [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag] who is set to announce his college decision on Saturday.

Notre Dame misses on another 2023 quarterback

Not the best news but it does serve as a valuable reminder to Notre Dame fans about now…

Seemingly anytime you reload your newsfeed geared toward Notre Dame football over the last week, there has been a story about a committed player possibly flipping his commitment. In some cases, it involves the Fighting Irish potentially losing a prospect. In others, [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and company are changing someone’s mind to instead come to South Bend.

Well, there is news on one of those recent Notre Dame targets that was committed elsewhere. For the Irish, it isn’t good. Or it’s real good, depending on how you look at things.

Quarterback [autotag]Austin Novosad[/autotag], who has been committed to Baylor’s 2023 class since December, became a recent target of Notre Dame’s and even made a trip to South Bend. Novosad seemed impressed by what he saw, but he has doubled down on attending Baylor.

Ohio State, Stanford and Texas A&M were among the stops for Novosad this summer, but he plans to remain true to his original commitment.

Although this isn’t the news Notre Dame was hoping for, it serves as a reminder. Just because a committed player takes a trip or two to a program that has accomplished more in recent years, it doesn’t mean he is automatically flipping.

Keep that in mind the next time you start to think [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag] or [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] are on the fast train out of Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class.

In all honesty, it seemed Novosad’s chances of ending up at Notre Dame were done when Tommy Rees and the Irish offered Pittsburgh commit Kenny Minchey. Minchey remains committed to the Panthers and is the ninth quarterback Notre Dame has offered in this cycle.

ESPN names two ‘23 positions Notre Dame is doing a great job in recruiting

The Irish 2023 defensive recruits are impressive as a whole

When you have one of the best recruiting classes in the country, it’s expected that your position groups should be among some of the best collections in the nation.

The current group of Notre Dame’s 20 commits is very defense heavy in talent, so it should come as no surprise when Tom VanHaaren of ESPN named two positions of the Irish’s current recruiting haul as one of the top groups in the country.

VanHaaren first names the safeties the Irish have commits from: [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag]. Both are ranked inside ESPN’s top 300; Bowen is 30th overall. VanHaaren believes “both will have an opportunity to contribute early in their career with the current depth chart.”

The other position group VanHaaren mentions is the defensive line, led by ESPN’s No. 1 defensive end [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag]. His future teammates [autotag]Brenan Vernon[/autotag], [autotag]Boubacar Traore[/autotag] and [autotag]Devan Houstan[/autotag] were singled out as well.

In order for the Irish to continue to stay on this list come signing day, they’re going to have to fend off schools trying to flip some of their more impressive commits. Alabama is coming hard after Keeley. He just visited Tuscaloosa. Bowen is also still talking with schools, most notably Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Recent Notre Dame target decommits from Kansas State

Is a commitment to Notre Dame soon to come?

As Notre Dame sits trying to avoid being on the wrong side of a few potential recruiting flips this weekend, the Irish appear to be making quite the impact and perhaps creating a flip of their own.

Five-star edge rusher [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag] stopped by Alabama this weekend while elite safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] is checking out Oklahoma despite the Sooners head coach not being a fan of committed players taking visits elsewhere.

With all the flipping and flopping being discussed you’d think college football was played on the beach (I’ll be here all week).

Well, there is potentially more as recent Notre Dame visitor [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag], who committed to Kansas State earlier this summer, announced he was officially decommitting from the Wildcats program on Friday night.

That certainly doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to be joining Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class, but the speedster’s recent actions certainly make the Irish a big-time favorite.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables’ words don’t match actions

“Do as I say, not as I do!”

It used to be a big deal when a player was committed to play football at a certain program but backed out of his commitment and chose a different school. That was a long time ago though, and the game has certainly changed. These days it feels like such actions happen multiple times daily.

I will not say I like that because I certainly don’t. I understand a player can only be committed to a certain degree if he’s still choosing to go about the recruiting process and make visits elsewhere. But, for as much as I love college football, that is certainly one of those things that has never felt quite right.

New Oklahoma head coach and longtime Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables met the media on Friday and made a heckuva lot of sense in explaining what an actual commitment in college football looks like. Take a quick look for yourself below.

Again, I really like what Venables says. As an observer, it drives me a bit crazy when a player commits to a program but still takes visits elsewhere. I can’t begin to imagine how insane it would make me if I was a coach being told one thing and then seeing my “committed” prospect visiting elsewhere.

So you’d think by saying this that Venables certainly wouldn’t ever consider pursuing a player who has commited to another program, right?

Except this very weekend Venables and Oklahoma are hosting five-star safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] on campus. Bowen committed to Notre Dame on New Year’s Day and has seen his recruiting ranking improve since.

Listen, I don’t like the committed but only sort of committed thing either, Brent, but until you entirely stop any pursuit of any player that is committed somewhere other than Oklahoma, then your word means nothing.

Congrats on the viral video, though.

Report: Notre Dame 2023 safety commit still speaking with other schools

Not the greatest news…

In recruiting, there is nothing official until a prospect signs. Each year there are plenty of “flips” as schools will keep going hard after a prospect, even after they have verbally committed to a school.

It looks like current 2023 safety Texas [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag], an Irish commit, is going through that process right now. Bowen committed to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Notre Dame on the first of this year but according to a report by 247Sports at the Under Armour Future 50 event, Freeman is going to have to continue to recruit Bowen hard.

Andrew Ivins reported that although Bowen is “confident” in his commitment, “he’s still in contact with both Oklahoma and Texas A&M.” Although this is not the greatest news for Notre Dame, Bowen still is committed but the Irish can’t let up in his recruitment.
