Ole Miss commit Suntarine Perkins enjoys visit to Tuscaloosa

Four-star Ole Miss commit enjoys his visit to Tuscaloosa

Back in January, four-star athlete from the class of 2023 Suntarine Perkins received his official offer from Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Perkins has been committed to his home state Ole Miss Rebels since November but has been taking advantage of trips to other programs.

The talented athlete is fresh off a visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend and from all indications, he really enjoyed his trip.

Cooper Petagna of 247Sports has this to say about Perkins as a prospect.

Unverified at 6-foot-3 and 200-pounds, appears to possess an athletic frame with growth potential to add additional weight to his frame. Displays good athleticism in multiple phases of the game with the majority of his snaps coming at the running back position. A downhill inside runner that plays in a triple option offense, Perkins has the ability to project to both a power or zone scheme at the next level.

Flashes above average patience and vision at the line of scrimmage, showing the ability to hit the hole quickly. Displays good short area explosiveness and change of direction ability, flashing some make you miss ability in the open field. Excels on contact, exhibiting excellent play strength and power at the point of attack. Lacks verified times, but appears to possess good play speed and long speed to outrun defenders in the open field.

Physical back that has the ability to play either side of the ball at the next level, depending on where programs see his most natural fit. More than likely projects to an off-ball weak side backer role at the next level on the defensive side of the ball. High upside athlete that can potentially provide value on either side of the ball and on multiple special teams units. Projects as a high level multi-year starter at a Power Five program.”

Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Pete Golding is the primary recruiter for Perkins which leads most to believe that Alabama is projected Perkins to play on the defensive side of the ball in college.

We’ll have to wait and see if Alabama’s efforts will be rewarded with a flip from Perkins.

Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding being held in Tuscaloosa County jail on DUI charge

Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on DUI charges

Alabama football defensive coordinator Pete Golding was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning in Northport, according to Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter, at around 1 a.m. on a DUI charge. No further details have been released regarding the arrest.

Golding has been coaching under Nick Saban for the Capstone since 2018, receiving a promotion to defensive coordinator the following year, following Tosh Lupoi’s departure.

As a defensive coordinator, he helped coach the Tide to a national title in 2020, failing to repeat in a relatively inconsistent year defensively in 2021.

Prior to his present stint with the Crimson Tide, Golding served as defensive coordinator for UTSA from 2016-2017.

There has been no comment from university officials as of the time of this writing.

Golding still remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

WATCH: Nick Saban on hand to watch Arch Manning hoop

Always be crutin’ is Nick Saban’s moto

To remain atop of the college football world, you must win on the recruiting trail. So it should come as no surprise that Alabama head football coach Nick Saban would spend his Friday night watching the most coveted prospect in the class of 2023, Arch Manning.

This time Manning was leading Newman High School on the hardwood instead of the gridiron.

Manning is the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning and is also the grandson of Archie Manning.

Considering his lineage, Manning’s talent is no surprise. Standing at 6’4″, 215 pounds, Manning has the prototypical size and tools to be the next legendary Manning quarterback.

In the Gym Hoops released this video on its Twitter page showing Nick Saban and Bill O’Brien in attendance. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding was also in attendance.

REPORT: Jaylen Moody set to remove name from transfer portal, return to Alabama

This would be HUGE for the Alabama defense

After Alabama’s defeat in the national championship game, several players decided to enter their names into the NCAA transfer portal. One of those young men was linebacker Jaylen Moody.

It is now being reported that Moody will remove his name from the transfer portal and return to Alabama.

Moody came to Tuscaloosa as a part of the 2018 recruiting class and immediately begin to see action as a true freshman on special teams and as a reserve inside linebacker for the Alabama defense. Moody’s return would be huge for Nick Saban, Pete Golding, and the rest of the Alabama defense.

2022 will be Moody’s fifth season with the Crimson Tide and he would be providing obvious experience and quality depth at the inside linebacker position. With Christian Harris opting to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft, the inside linebacker position opposite of Henry To’oTo’o will be open for competition.

Moody is definitely a player to keep your eye on this spring in Tuscaloosa.

3 superlatives from Alabama’s dominating semifinal win over Cincinnati

Three must-see superlative from the Cotton Bowl CFP Semifinal!

Have we traveled back in time to 2011? No. 1 Alabama dominated No. 4 Cincinnati 27-6 thanks to a punishing ground game and suffocating defense.

The Bearcats had only 218 total yards and could never muster any consistency on offense.

The rushing attack of Alabama completely owned the game. Brian Robinson jr. broke the 200-yard mark averaging over seven yards per carry.

Let’s take a look at some of the superlatives from Alabama’s victory.

First …Brian Robinson Jr’s punishing effort…

Pete Golding comments on his potential future as a head coach

The 37-year old is working on his fourth season on Nick Saban’s staff.

I’ve had a varying viewpoint of Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding throughout this college football season. From frustration to satisfaction, my scale has tipped from one end to the other.

But, one thing I do know is that he will be a head coach one day in the future, whether it be near or far, it’s inevitable.

He is coming into his own as a decent play-caller and has always been a phenomenal recruiter, so the question isn’t concerning whether or not it will happen, but when.

As part of the buildup to the College Football Playoff semifinal matchup in the Cotton Bowl against the Cincinnati Bearcats, the media had some rare exposure to Golding on Monday afternoon.

He eventually commented on his prospects as a head coach in the future and gave some pretty memorable quotes.

“I took this job to work for the best football coach to ever coach the game, in my opinion,” Golding said in his video conference. “I promise you, I’m in no rush to be a head coach. I think a lot of that is overrated.”

He has a great point. A lot of coaches think they want to be a head coach right away just to find out the hard way that it’s a lot more intense and demanding than calling and developing just one side of the football.

The 37-year old is working on his fourth season as defensive coordinator for Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide and doesn’t seem to have plans to make a career move of that magnitude as of yet.

Alabama will take on Cincinnati in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Friday night. The winner moves on to play the winner between Georgia and Michigan in the CFP National Championship Game.

Pete Golding deserves some major recognition for his recruiting efforts

Maybe it’s time we give Golding the recognition he deserves as one of college football’s best recruiters!

Pete Golding called masterful games as Alabama’s defensive coordinator during the Iron Bowl against Auburn and the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

But, before that, some of us questioned his abilities as a defensive play-caller, especially after the 41-38 loss on the road to Texas A&M. The Iron Bowl helped to change the narrative in a 24-22 4OT win in Jordan-Hare, where the Tide hadn’t won in six years. The defense continued to play its best football in the 41-24 SEC Championship Game win.

Here we are, in December, and Golding continues to hit his stride, this time on the recruiting trail. Golding helped bring seven recruits on board as commits, and on the Early National Signing Day, he helped the Tide sign six, with more expected to sign in the coming months prior to the official National Signing Day.

Among them are four-star wide receivers Shazz Preston and Aaron Anderson, four-star linebacker Shawn Murphy and four-star defensive lineman Jaheim Oatis.

That’s this year, sure, but Golding has been tearing it up on the recruiting trail since he arrived in 2017. His best commitments in his time at the Capstone are five-star linebacker Dallas Turner (who saw plenty of action this year due to injury), Kool-Aid McKinstry and five-star linebacker Drew Sanders (who also played several snaps before an injury put him out). This is a noticeable group of former recruits.

In my opinion, Golding has earned himself at least another season to prove that his defense can be consistent throughout an entire season, but we can certainly use his recruiting acumen for years to come.

Be thankful that our defensive coordinator is among the best recruiters in college football.

Maybe we were wrong about Pete Golding

Alabama’s defense was smothering in the win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

The Alabama defense has gone through a lot of losses to good players and wrinkles this season and it’s had an effect on the way the team performs at times.

Throughout the year, the defensive side of the ball has either shut down the opponent or rolled over and allowed tons of yardage, one or the other, and nothing in between.

For instance, in its first big test of the season against the Ole Miss Rebels, the Alabama defense was smothering, allowing just 291 total yards by an offense averaging much more than that. That’s just 213 yards passing allowed to one of the top quarterbacks in college football.

Then you have the defense that showed up against Texas A&M. Alabama gave up nearly 400 yards of total offense in a 41-38 loss. That loss had many Tide fans calling for Golding’s job, including me.

The Crimson Tide needed good defense to show itself against the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl on Saturday, and they did not disappoint.

The Alabama defense that Golding fielded against Auburn was glorious.

The reads appeared to be simplified and the audibles never led to misalignment. There were disguised blitzes and faux coverage looks and TJ Finley and the Tigers offense took the bait time after time.

That Crimson Tide defense allowed just 159 yards total. Golding called a beautiful game that led to a complete domination in the trenches. Tank Bigsby, one of the best backs in the SEC, was limited to just 69 yards on 29 carries. He never got going, averaging a paltry 2.2 yards per carry.

I’ll maintain my reservations regarding confidence in Pete Golding’s coaching abilities, but if the Tide defense can play like they did against the Tigers, this man may redeem himself entirely.

Georgia will present a whole new challenge. The defensive side of the ball will end up being the difference in the SEC Championship Game. If Alabama can be consistent and win their individual battles Bryce Young and the offense will have a lot of pressure relieved.

Alabama will take on Georgia in the SEC Championship game at 3:00 p.m. CST, it can be viewed on your local CBS.

5 plays that changed the 2021 Iron Bowl

Here are the 5 plays that changed the 2021 Iron Bowl!

In one of the craziest, most indescribable Iron Bowls of all time, Alabama was able to prevail in four overtimes, 24-22 over the Auburn Tigers.

The Alabama offense struggled for the better part of the contest, but when the Tide needed the points to stay alive, Bryce Young and company delivered.

It’s hard to find much fault in Pete Golding and the Alabama defense. Alabama suffocated Tank Bigsby and the Auburn rushing attack and consistently pressured TJ Finley each time he dropped back to pass.

With all the madness that was the Iron Bowl, let’s look at the five plays that changed the incredible game.

Ranking Nick Saban’s defensive coordinators during his tenure

How do Nick Saban’s defensive coordinators rank?

For a while, the defensive coordinator position on the Alabama Crimson Tide’s coaching staff was easily the most consistent, besides the head man Nick Saban himself, anyways. But that harmonious consistency has since dissipated and has become a revolving door of coaches, though not quite as tumultuous as the offensive coordinator turnover.

After 15 years in Tuscaloosa, Saban has had five different defensive coordinators put in time for him at Alabama.

From Kirby Smart to Pete Golding, how do Saban’s various defensive coordinators during his reign at Alabama rank?
