1 veteran player on the roster bubble at each position group for the Browns

After overhauling chunks of their roster, which veterans could find themselves on the bubble as training camp nears?

The Cleveland Browns and general manager set out to add talent not only to positions of need but all over their roster this offseason, and may not be done yet. While the microscope is on the defensive tackle room given how abysmal it was a year ago (meaning second-year player Perrion Winfrey will need to lock in this summer), there are now veterans on the roster bubble in every room.

Who else joins Winfrey as veteran roster bubble candidates as the Browns look to get training camp underway in three weeks? Here is one player per position that will be in a fight for a roster spot.

WATCH: DT Perrion Winfrey putting in the work this offseason

Winfrey is putting in time in the gym leading up to training camp.

The rookie season of defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey with the Cleveland Browns was not smooth sailing as he struggled with off-the-field issues and inconsistent play. The team also chose to add more talent to the position in Dalvin Tomlinson and Siaki Ika which will in turn make it harder for Winfrey to make the 53-man roster.

Winfrey will have to show up to training camp ready to work and videos posted by Aaron Wilson show he is putting the work in at the gym. This will need to translate to the field but for a position that needs players to step up, it is a nice sight to see for Browns fans.

Deshaun Watson and 7 other Browns with the most to prove in 2023

Which Browns have the most to prove this upcoming season?

The Cleveland Browns are looking to get back on track after back-to-back disappointing campaigns. With truly no excuses this year after overhauling their coordinators and the weak points on their roster this offseason, the Browns have sought to also give quarterback Deshaun Watson more weapons like Elijah Moore as well.

The 2023 season has a stronghold on the future of the team; another losing season could shift the direction of this team substantially.

If the Browns want to get back into the postseason, they are going to need an uptick from their key performers. Which players on the roster have the most to prove this season on a team that has undergone an identity change on defense, and on a team that has no excuses offensively?

Browns Mailbag: Jedrick Wills, Perrion Winfrey, and dark horse roster candidates

What are the futures of Wills, Winfrey, and others heading into next month’s training camp?

The Browns wrapped up offseason workouts after last week’s mandatory minicamp. You aren’t winning any games in June but it was a productive minicamp for the offense that looks better than last year. Quarterback Deshaun Watson talked about having fun on the football field and how much better he feels this offseason than last. Questions remain about the overall future of the roster, will Perrion Winfrey make the roster after an offseason arrest that ended with the charges being dropped? What should the team expect from Jedrick Wills and what dark horse candidates could make the roster?

Let’s examine these questions and more in this edition of the Browns mailbag. Questions for future mailbags can be emailed to brownsmailbag@gmail.com.

3 positional battles to watch as we wait for training camp

The first team is all but filled out, but what position battles are worth monitoring?

We are still about a month out from the Cleveland Browns returning to Berea for training camp. And for the most part, it should be a rather uninteresting one in terms of positional battles at key positions in 2023 after general manager Andrew Berry remained aggressive this offseason to add talent at needed spots on the depth chart.

However, there are a few depth positions that could provide a bit of intrigue when camp arrives to keep an eye on. Here are three battles worth monitoring when the Browns get back in the building later next month.

Perrion Winfrey has charges dropped after pretrial diversion program completion

The defensive tackle can now get back to focusing on football.

The Cleveland Browns can now get the mind of second-year defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey back onto the football field. After completing a pretrial diversion program, Winfrey had his misdemeanor charges dropped as training camp remains about a month and a half out (according to Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot).

In April, Winfrey was charged with assault on a woman he was currently dating at the time. This has not been Winfrey’s first incident that has landed him in hot water with the Browns. The ice is thin for Winfrey, but he will have every chance to make a name for himself and compete for a roster spot with the likes of Maurice Hurst and Trysten Hill.

Details emerge regarding robbery of two Browns players over the weekend

New details emerged on Tuesday regarding the robbery of two Browns players over the weekend

New details have emerged regarding crimes committed against two Cleveland Browns over the weekend.

Defensive back Greg Newsome II and lineman Perrion Winfrey were the victims of an armed robbery by six masked men early on Monday morning. Neither were harmed during the incident but, according to ESPN, the suspects left the scene in Newsome’s vehicle with stolen jewelry in tow.

Running back Demetric Felton also had his car stolen over the weekend, though preliminary reports haven’t indicated that he was present at the time of the theft.

It is worth noting that quarterback Deshaun Watson was the victim of car theft earlier in the year, and at this time it is unclear whether any of these incidents are related.

News about the spate of crimes came on Tuesday just before the Browns reported to Berea for Cleveland’s mandatory minicamp. Developments in the story are sure to follow, so stay tuned to Browns Wire for all the facts about this regrettable incident.

Report: DT Perrion Winfrey in attendance at voluntary workouts after arrest

Perrion Winfrey is in Berea for phase one workouts.

The Cleveland Browns are back in Berea for phase one of their offseason workouts as the 2023 NFL draft now sits just a week away. As players pour back into the building, there is one surprising name that has made his way back to Northeast Ohio as defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is on-site despite his arrest earlier this month (according to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook).

Head coach Kevin Stefanski did not have much to say about the Winfrey situation in his press conference to start offseason workouts other than to add that the team harps on player safety outside of the building continuously. While his leash may be short moving forward, Winfrey is back in the building.

Kevin Stefanski talks Perrion Winfrey, injuries, and Browns offseason workouts

Stefanski addressed the media as off-season workouts began.

Players are back in Berea after phase one of the offseason kicked off for the Browns on Monday. Kevin Stefanski took to the podium on Tuesday to discuss the recent news and season outlook. From talking about the tragic loss of former defensive end Chris Smith as well as the recent arrest of Perrion Winfrey and what if it affects his current roster position with the team.

He also addressed the rumors around Greg Newsome and the status of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah after his injury to end the 2022 season. Let’s look at what Stefanski had to say on Tuesday to kick off the off-season program.

Defensive tackles still available in free agency as Perrion Winfrey decision looms

The Browns have a decision to make on Perrion Winfrey. What defensive tackles on the open market could the Browns still sign to continue to round out the room?

While Dalvin Tomlinson, Maurice Hurst, Trysten Hill, and the newly re-signed Ben Stille remain in the defensive tackle room for the Cleveland Browns, they are still in the market in NFL free agency for another veteran to round it out. They have already hosted Al Woods, while he left without a deal, and they may have more urgency after Perrion Winfrey was charged with assault on a woman.

The good news for the Browns, however, is that there are still plenty of sturdy veterans available in free agency ripe for the picking. With the 2023 NFL Draft crop of tackles looking weak in the middle rounds, they may be more inclined to add a veteran.

Who are those defensive tackles that could find themselves in Cleveland? Here are a few that the Browns could have interest in.
