The Badgers were able to put their three-game losing streak to rest Tuesday, defeating Penn State 63-60 at home. Tyler Wahl made his return to the lineup after missing the last three contests, producing 10 points in the victory.

Wisconsin was led by bigman Steven Crowl, who scored a game-high 21 points while coraling 11 rebounds down low. In addition to Crowl, the Badgers had three other players score in double-digits, the aforementioned Wahl, as well as Chucky Hepburn (13 points) and Connor Essegian (10 points).

Although Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk combined for 35 points, the Badgers were able to squeeze out the three-point victory Tuesday and improve to 12-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Big Ten.

Here’s how Wisconsin fans and media reacted to some of the key moments of the win over a conference opponent:

Wisconsin gives an update on Tyler Wahl’s status vs Penn State

Good news for Badgers’ fans as Tyler Wahl looks likely to return to the lineup Tuesday versus the Nittany Lions.

Tyler Wahl is active and expected to return to the lineup Tuesday night as the Badgers take on Penn State in the Kohl Center at 7:30pm. The senior forward will be back on the court following a three-game absence while dealing with a right ankle injury he sustained versus Minnesota on Jan. 3.

Wahl’s return will be a welcomed one as Wisconsin has dropped three in a row with him unavailable, allowing 70.3 points per game in comparison to the 61.2 PPG they surrender with him on the court. In addition to the defensive woes, the Badgers have struggled on the offensive end without their leading scorer (13.2 PPG), scoring an average of 59.7 points in those three contests (68.5 PPG in 13 games with Wahl).

Penn State will come into Tuesday’s contest having had six days rest since their last game, beating Indiana 85-66 and improving to a 12-5 overall record Wednesday. Wisconsin will look to break their three-game losing streak and improve to 12-5 on the season with a victory at home Tuesday night.

Best photos from Penn State’s game vs. Purdue at the Palestra

Here are the best photos from Penn State basketball’s game at the Palestra vs. Purdue

Penn State basketball once again made itself at home in one of college basketball’s historic venues, the Palestra in Philadelphia, on Sunday evening against one of the top teams in the sport, the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue brought a no. 1 ranking into the Palestra and looked to avoid being the first top-ranked team in the AP poll to lose a game in the arena in over 60 years, but Penn State gave the Boilermakers a bit of a scare in the first half.

Penn State couldn’t build off the energy of leading Purdue at halftime and struggled to slow down the momentum shift favoring Purdue after halftime.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s virtual home game in the Palestra against No. 1 Purdue.

Penn State vs. Purdue basketball: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Sunday’s game in the Palestra

Penn State takes on No. 1 Purdue at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia. How to watch on tv or live stream.

Penn State basketball sets up a temporary home in the City of Brotherly Love on Sunday when it hosts No. 1 Purdue in the Palestra on Sunday evening. Penn State has enjoyed some fun moments in the Palestra, including its 2020 top-25 victory over Iowa, but it is up against some history this time around.

Top-ranked teams in the AP poll have a solid track record in the Palestra dating back to 1953 with seven consecutive wins when playing as the visitor. Will Penn State snap that winning streak and hand Purdue a second Big Ten loss within a week?

Here’s how to catch all of the action Sunday evening from Philadelphia.

Penn State looks to make Palestra history vs. No. 1 Purdue

No. 1 teams from outside Philly visiting the Palestra are 7-1 all-time. Will Penn State buck that trend vs. Purdue?

For the first time in Philadelphia sports history on Sunday, Penn State will play host to the AP No. 1 team in college basketball. Penn State will play top-ranked Purdue in the iconic Palestra, which is the regular home to the Ivy League’s Penn Quakers and as storied a venue in the sport as any. But for the first time since 2007, the Palestra will welcome the nation’s top-ranked team in the AP poll, and it will be the first time Penn State has played on the opposite side.

Penn State has adopted the Palestra as its home game for one game whenever it can do so as a way to bring the program to the lucrative Philadelphia area for recruiting purposes. It has played in the Palestra a number of times over the years against teams from the city of Philadelphia, but it has called the Palestra home for a few Big Ten games in more recent years. This may be the biggest one yet as Penn State faces the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers.

Sports statistics expert and historian Bob Vetrone shared the comprehensive list of every college basketball matchup in the city of Philadelphia where the nation’s top-ranked team visited Philadelphia for a regular season game, dating back to 1953.

The last time the nation’s top-ranked team visited the Palestra was when North Carolina brought its No. 1 ranking to the venue to obliterate the Penn Quakers. Before that, the last No. 1 team to visit the Palestra was Loyola Chicago for three consecutive games in a late-December tournament against Georgetown, Northwestern, and Temple in 1963. Loyola Chicago lost its first game against Georgetown but won the following two games against Northwestern and Temple.

Since 1953, the AP no. 1 team is 7-1 when visiting the Palestra, not including any games played by a Philadelphia school when ranked No. 1. It’s been roughly 60 years since the last time a No. 1 team went down in the Palestra. Can Penn State make some more history on Sunday evening in Philly?

Penn State’s men’s basketball team absolutely dominated No. 17 Illinois as double-digit underdog

December madness!

Riding the emotional high of beating No. 2 Texas in overtime on Tuesday, No. 17 Illinois was supposed to handle business at home on Saturday afternoon against an inferior Penn State men’s basketball team.

But not only did the Fighting Illini fail to cover their double-digit spread (-10.5), they didn’t even win the game. As a matter of fact, they were absolutely crushed.

After digging out of an early second-half hole of 14 points, Illinois managed to spark a run and trim the deficit to five points with just over 13 minutes of gameplay remaining.

But Penn State’s Andrew Funk and Myles Dread would go on a 3-point spree to extend the Nittany Lions’ lead to 19, ultimately closing the door on any Illinois comeback hopes. In the end, Penn State claimed a 74-59 victory over Illinois in what might be one of the biggest surprises of the day.

PSU’s Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk led all scorers with 20 points.

Hopefully, you bettors out there faded the Illini.

ESPN’s updated bracketology has bad news for Penn State

ESPN’s updated bracketology puts Penn State basketball in a tough spot.

It was a bit of a tough week to be a Nittany Lion on the basketball court. A loss on the road at Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge has damaged Penn State’s bracketro9logy outlook just enough to keep them home during tourney time. This, of course, is according to the updated bracketology by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

Lunardi has Penn State currently being listed as his first team out of the NCAA tournament in March. The good news is there is plenty of time to help boost Penn State’s tournament profile, and the weekly bracketology changes from week to week. But this is never a spot you want to be in as you are about to head into conference play for the majority of the remainder of the season.

Last week, Lunardi had Penn State among the last four teams in not having to play in one of the opening-round games. The other three schools not having to play an opening-round game included Michigan, Kansas State, and TCU. Arizona State, LSU, NC State, and Ole Miss were the last four teams that would have to play in the opening round games according to Lunardi.

This week will see Penn State play two Big Ten games with a chance to dramatically change Penn State’s tournament profile. Penn State will host Michigan State on Wednesday evening and visit Illinois on Saturday before getting a week off and a few more non-conference games to close out 2022. Michigan State is among Lunardi’s last four in as the week begins.

Lunardi’s updated bracketology has the Big Ten with nine teams in the tournament at this point in time. Penn State is hoping to make it 10.

Penn State basketball adds non-conference tournament to schedule

The field for the 2022 Charleston Classic is set. See who Penn State could be facing.

Penn State basketball may not be a basketball power but it has shown it can hang with most teams. Last year’s performance in the Big Ten tournament showed some progress. Now with the team adding some depth from the transfer portal and bringing a lot of players back some people think they can roll that momentum into this year.

One way to test yourself as a team is early non-conference tournaments. Penn State has gotten into one themselves.

The field, outside of Penn State, includes ACC’s Virginia Tech, Sun Belt’s Old Dominion, Atlantic 10’s Davidson, Colonial’s Charleston, Mountain West’s Colorado State, and the SEC’s South Carolina. Winning this tournament could give Penn State some decent non-conference wins when the March Madness committee meets in 2023.

When Penn State was invited to this tournament in 2020 they were knocked out by Virginia Tech. If both teams were to win their matchups we could see a rematch of that game. A win over Virginia Tech could prove valuable down the road while also setting the tone for the season.

Other notable non-conference games Penn State basketball has lined up includes Clemson of the ACC and Butler of the Big East.

Head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] returns for his second season as Penn State head coach. He went 14-17 in the regular season including a 7-10 conference record. Hopes are still high for Shrewsberry after a coaching career that included successful stops at Purdue as an assistant coach as well as in the NBA with the Boston Celtics with Brad Stevens.

It was with Brad Stevens at Butler where Shrewsberry came so close to winning a national championship when he helped coach the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship appearances. Nittany Lion fans hope some of that magic can get the team to the postseason for a start. Bringing back eight players may help bring a veteran presence and establish some winning finally for the program.

Clemson to host Penn State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Clemson basketball now has a third game on its schedule for next season.

Clemson basketball will host the Penn State Nittany Lions on Tuesday, Nov. 29 as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Clemson boasts a 3-1 record against Penn State all-time and is 1-0 at home when facing the Nittany Lions.

Finishing last season 17-16, Clemson will enter the 2022 season with two of its top four scorers from last season. Rising junior center PJ Hall averaged a team-high 15.5 points while forward Hunter Tyson will play his fifth season for the Tigers after averaging a career-high 10.0 points per game.

Meanwhile, Penn State went 14-17 last season and was 1-10 on the road.

With Friday’s announcement, Clemson now has three games scheduled, the other two matchups being against Iowa and either Cal or TCU in the Emerald Coast Classic. Those two games will take place on Nov. 25 and 26.

Former Penn State guard Izaiah Brockington declares for the NBA Draft

This former Penn State basketball player has declared for the NBA draft.

While he may not still be a Nittany Lion, it is worth noting how [autotag]Izaiah Brockington[/autotag] is now taking his talents to the NBA after transferring to Iowa State. Brockington announced on his Twitter account that he was declaring for the draft after Iowa State’s sweet sixteen exit.

Before leaving for Iowa State, Brockington had carved out a role on a Penn State squad that while it never played too much potential did help groom Brockington. Ironically, Brockington had transferred to Penn State from Saint Bonaventure in 2018. Once he was eligible at Penn State he was able to earn decent minutes as a redshirt sophomore with 20 minutes a game and averaged 8 points, 2 rebounds and an assist a game. Those numbers jumped during his junior season improved to  12.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.

That improvement from his sophomore to junior year had him primed for a breakout senior season but alas he decided to have that breakout somewhere else. He transferred of course to Iowa State and then proceeded to have career highs. While Penn State will forever be a part of his journey, it does seem from the highlights posted by Draft Express that they missed out on quite the talent.

Penn State finished the season 14-17 and finished third to last in the Big Ten, although they had a strong showing in the Big Ten tourney and hope to grow on that in 2022. The program has already started to get commits for the 2022 class. Mix in some veterans with some fresh faces and maybe Penn State can see themselves working their way out of the cellar of the Big Ten next season.
