Penn State’s coach used the Ted Lasso ‘Believe’ sign to hype his team up after NCAA tourney win

Penn State has its guys believing. Ted Lasso would be proud.

Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry borrowed from the world’s most inspirational television coach to hype up his locker room after its big March Madness win.

After the Nittany Lions took down Texas A&M in the first round of the 2023 NCAA tournament on Thursday night, 76-59, Shrewsberry gave his team a Ted Lasso-inspired slap on the show’s yellow “Believe” poster.

The team has reportedly been traveling around with the poster as a token of good luck, as a February losing streak turned into the Nittany Lions winning nine of their last 11 games.

Penn State is dancing for the first time 2011, and the team made the most of it with Thursday’s major win in the opening round.

We can imagine Coach Lasso would be proud to see Coach Shrewsberry using one of his main motivational techniques to inspire his team.

No. 10 Penn State will next face No. 2 Texas on Saturday night in the round of 32. Will Shrewsberry be able to inspire the Nittany Lions to defeat a formidable Longhorns team and advance to next week’s games?

Well, if they can channel some of that AFC Richmond underdog spirit, perhaps they’ll survive and advance once more.

Penn State dominates Texas A&M, advances in NCAA Tournament for first time since 2001

Andrew Funk’s big game fuels Penn State past Texas A&M in NCAA Basketball Tournament

Going into the NCAA Tournament, the goal is to be playing the best basketball of the season by the time the games start.

Penn State has been doing that in March.

After a great run before the Big Ten Tournament to get themselves into the March Madness conversation, they cemented themselves in the field by making the championship game. Even though they lost on the last possession, it was clear this Penn State team was peaking at the right time.

But, the NCAA Tournament was going to be a different challenge. Facing a Texas A&M team from a different conference whose style of play was different than what they’ve seen before was supposed to be a test of how good this team actually was.

The Nittany Lions answered all questions tonight winning 76-59.

This was a historic win for Penn State. It was the first NCAA Tournament win since 2001. It was the largest margin of victory for the program in NCAA Tournament history. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag]’s 27 points were the most by a Penn State player in NCAA Tournament history.

It was also a weird game in many ways for Nittany Lions fans. This felt like the first time in about a month that the game didn’t come down to the wire.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3003″ ]

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3006″ ]

That’s because Penn State rarely trailed in this game. After trailing 2-4 in the first couple minutes of the game, Funk hit a three to put them back on top. Funk hitting threes was the theme of the game.

About five minutes into the first half, Texas A&M was up four points. That was their largest lead of the game. Once again, Funk hit a three to cut the lead to one point. After seesawing back and forth for a bit, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] hit a jumper that put Penn State up 13-12 at the 11-and-a-half-minute mark.

They never trailed in the game again.

It was an utterly dominant performance by Penn State. They shot 48.2% from the field and a scorching 59.1% from behind the three-point line. They also held A&M to 33.9% shooting and 29.4% from three. This was easily the best game this team had played all season.

Funk was the star of the game tonight. He hit eight threes on 10 attempts to finish with the NCAA Tournament record of 27 points. Pickett was his usual dominant self, finishing with 19 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] joined them in double figures with 10 points.

But it was truly a team effort. [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] didn’t light up the box score, but he played a major part in frustrating Texas A&M’s best player Wade Taylor IV. Freshmen [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag] and [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] had important stretches stifling the opposing bigs.

Penn State fans should be celebrating this historic victory because it was a long time coming.

They’ll be facing the second-seeded Texas Longhorns in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday for the opportunity to play in the Sweet 16.

Every Big Ten matchup in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

Every Big Ten matchup in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

While Wisconsin couldn’t put together a late run to get into the NCAA Tournament, eight Big Ten teams found their way into the dance.

The seeds range from Purdue as a No. 1 seed to Penn State as a No. 10 seed, but the gap between them isn’t as wide as that. The Boilermakers and Nittany Lions played a thriller in the Big Ten championship that Purdue ended up winning late.

There are a number of intriguing matchups on the first two days of the best event in sports. Here is the complete Big Ten schedule for the First Round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament:

Buzz Williams’ final Pre-Game Press Conference ahead of March Madness opening round matchup vs. Penn State

Hear what Head coach Buzz Williams had to say just a day ahead of Texas A&M’s opening-round matchup vs. Penn State in the NCAA Tournament

The seven-seeded Texas A&M Aggies (26-9, 15-3 SEC) are just one sleep away from their late-night opening-round showdown vs. the 10-seed Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday night, coming into the game with a confident mindset in their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018, and first under Head coach Buzz Williams in his fourth season with the program.

Both programs finished the regular season on a high note, as Penn State has won 8 out of their last 10, while the Aggies notched 10 out of their last 12, both losing in their conference tournament final on Sunday afternoon. Underseeded as all get out, Texas A&M knows that focusing on the task at hand and staying true to their play style is the only way to way to move on in the Tournament, facing a Nittany Lions offense that shoots nearly 40% from deep, and led by Jalen Pickett (17.9 PPG), Seth Lundy (14.4 PPG), and Andrew Funk (12.1 PPG), defense on the perimeter is an absolute must from start to finish.

A day before the game, Buzz Williams spoke to the media to give his final scouting report on Penn State, and the importance of living in the moment during one of the most magical times of the sports calendar. Here’s what Buzz had to say for the final time ahead of the game.

Texas A&M vs. Penn State will be held at Well Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, and is slated for Thursday, March 16th at 8:55 PM CT and will air on TBS.

Buzz Williams Pre-Game Press Conference ahead of March Madness opening round matchup against Penn State

Hear what Texas A&M Head coach Buzz Williams had to say ahead of the Aggies NCAA Tournament opening round matchup against Penn State on Thursday night

Texas A&M (26-9, 15-3 SEC) is as you know, headed back to its first NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2018 season, and the first trip under Head coach Buzz Williams in his fourth season with the program. On Selection Sunday, the Aggies received a seven-seed in the Midwest Bracket and will face the 10-seed Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday night inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

The fact that Texas A&M was selected two seeds lower than nearly every media member, bracket expert, and analytics metric expected, discussions have surrounded Buzz Williams’s relationship with the Selection Committee, who may have punished the Aggies this post-season after Williams’s passionate plea for “Transparency” after Texas A&M was unjustly snubbed from the Tournament last season.

Nevertheless, the Aggies are back in the Big Dance and a matchup with one of the hottest teams in the country, Penn State start Jalen Pickett (17.9 ppg) vs. Aggies guard Wade Taylor IV (16.5 ppg) should make for an exciting 40 minutes in the first full day of Tournament action. on Tuesday, Williams spoke with the media two days ahead of the game, not only focusing on the opponent at hand but taking in the experience that is the magic of March Madness.

USC bubble watch: Penn State picks up huge win at Northwestern

#USC has received lots of good bubble results, but this isn’t one. @NittanyLionWire is delighted by a win over Northwestern.

Not every bubble result is going to break favorably. USC has received a lot of good bubble results in recent weeks, but on Wednesday night, the ball bounced the wrong way.

Penn State, on the middle of the bubble and badly needing a quality win, trailed Northwestern by 10 in the first half and by six with just over four minutes left in regulation. However, the Nittany Lions hit a bunch of big 3-pointers, got the game into overtime, and then secured a huge offensive rebound leading to a game-winning 3-pointer in the final second of the extra period to beat Northwestern, 68-65, on the road.

Nittany Lions Wire wrote:

“Senior guard Camren Wynter was sensational. He scored a game-high 24 points with four threes. His most important one of the night came at the buzzer in overtime.

“Jalen Pickett missed a fadeaway with eight seconds left. Freshman forward Evan Mahaffey outhustled three Wildcats and corralled the offensive rebound. He then threw a pass back to Andrew Funk who found Wynter in the corner for an open three.

“Dagger. Game winner.”

If Penn State beats Maryland at home on the weekend, it should be in good shape for an NCAA Tournament bid. That would be one less available bubble spot for USC.

The Trojans know they absolutely need one win this week against the Arizona schools. Crunch time is here.

This is March.

Bubble Watch: Rutgers beats Penn State, deals Nittany Lions crippling blow

.@RutgersWire’s Scarlet Knights rallied to beat Penn State. The Nittany Lions are in bubble trouble, several slots below #USC.

The USC Trojans got some more bubble help on Sunday evening. Penn State was generally viewed as a “First Four Out” team by bracketologists and forecasters, but with Michigan beating Wisconsin, Michigan likely rose above the Nittany Lions on the seed list. Penn State needed to keep pace at home against Rutgers.

Penn State led by six points with six minutes left but then missed each of its last 14 field goal attempts. Rutgers rallied down the stretch for a 59-56 win.

Rutgers Wire has more on the story:

“After a sloppy first half, Rutgers outscored Penn State 38-25 in the second half,” Kristian Dyer wrote. “The Scarlet Knights were led by 16 points off the bench from freshman Derek Simpson.

“With 1:24 left in the game, Simpson’s layup and ensuing free throw gave Rutgers a 57-56 lead. The Scarlet Knights would never look back.”

Penn State needs at least two wins, probably three, to make the NCAA Tournament, so a miss with only two regular-season games remaining — plus the Big Ten Tournament — is significant. Penn State is at Northwestern and then hosts Maryland. If the Nittany Lions lose both, they’re done and will go to the NIT. If they win two, they’re back in a good position. If they split, they will need two wins at the Big Ten Tournament, which is doable but certainly challenging.

USC has a significant advantage over PSU in the race for an at-large bid.

Badgers hold on for needed 79-74 OT win over Penn State

Wisconsin travelled to State College and beat Penn State 79-74 in OT on Wednesday. The narrow win was their third in the last 10 games.

Wisconsin travelled to State College and beat Penn State 79-74 in overtime on Wednesday. The narrow victory was their third win in their last 10 games and second over the last three contests. On top of that, the team was able to get a season sweep over their Big Ten opponent.

The Badgers were particularly effective from deep against the Nittany Lions, going 11-for-24 from three. Connor Essegian (18 points) and Chucky Hepburn (19 points) combined for nine three-pointers, making four and five respectively.

In addition to the two guards, Tyler Wahl returned to form Wednesday, scoring 16 points (6-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-6 FT) with six rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and a steal over a team-high 42 minutes. The double-digit point performance ended a three-game drought for the senior forward.

Wisconsin was able to take a 35-29 advantage into halftime but Penn State responded in the second half, knotting it up at 68 at the end of regulation.

In OT, all five of the Badgers’ starters were able to score and Wisconsin was able to escape with a victory, outscoring the Nittany Lions 11-6 in the extra period.

For Penn State, Jalen Pickett led the way with 17 points (8-19 FG, 1-5 3Pt), eight rebounds and eight assists over 41 minutes. The team also had three other players reach double-digit points with Camren Wynter (15), Seth Lundy (14) and Andrew Funk (10) getting to that mark in the loss.

The must-needed win for the Badgers should silence the Greg Gard critics for at least a fews days.

With the win, Wisconsin improved to 14-9 overall and 6-7 in Big Ten contests this season. They’ll return to action Saturday on the road versus Nebraska (11-14) at 2 PM.

Penn State dropped to 14-10 (5-8 in Big Ten) with the loss will look to get in win column when they travel to take on Maryland (16-8) on Saturday.

Badgers guard ruled out Monday versus Northwestern

The Badgers will be without a starting guard Monday versus Northwestern as Max Klesmit will be forced to sit out with an upper body injury.

The Badgers are set to return to action Monday on the road versus Northwestern at 5:30 PM, but the team will be without junior guard Max Klesmit in the contest. Klesmit has been ruled out with an upper body injury, which is likely a result of the blow to the head that he suffered in Wisconsin’s 63-60 win over Penn State on Tuesday.

Klesmit was limited to just 10 minutes of action versus the Nittany Lions and will now be forced to miss at least one game as a result of his injury. In his place, junior Jordan Davis will likely return to the starting lineup after heading to the bench for the first time Tuesday.

Wisconsin comes into Monday’s matchup with Northwestern at a 12-5 record and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats are also 12-5 but carry a 3-3 conference record so far.

Wisconsin just helped USC in NCAA Tournament bubble battle

#Wisconsin beat USC in November. The Trojans want @TheBadgersWire to thrive and pick off other bubble teams such as Penn State. That happened Tuesday night.

When we discuss bubble results and explore a path for the USC men’s basketball team to make the NCAA Tournament, we have to be precise and careful.

Some bubble games involve two bubble teams on relatively equal footing, which means that even though one team will lose and fall to a lower spot on the bubble, the winner will rise. That doesn’t necessarily help USC.

The Trojans want one of two things to happen. First, they will want teams in very good position on the bubble to beat teams in a weak position on the bubble. Teams likely to get in can simply solidify their position. USC and other teams squarely on the bubble don’t want the weaker bubble teams to fortify their positions and move up the ladder. That’s where extra at-large bids can come from, crowding USC out of the field.

Second, if USC lost to a specific team earlier in the season, the Trojans need that team to not only improve its position, but also bump off other bubble candidates.

Hello, Wisconsin.

The Badgers defeated USC in the Battle 4 Atlantis event in late November. USC won’t mind if Wisconsin solidifies itself as an NCAA Tournament team. USC’s resume looks better if the Trojans have a loss to an NCAA team. Meanwhile, Wisconsin can — in the process of gaining an NCAA bid — prevent other bubble teams from getting at-large spots.

Tuesday night, USC received that kind of result from Wisconsin.

The Badgers improved their NCAA Tournament prospects while denying bubble-hugging Penn State a key win. As our friends at Badgers Wire noted, Wisconsin’s 63-60 win over Penn State was very important for UW.

Some bubble results contain mixed or ambiguous meanings, but this particular bubble game clearly broke in the right direction for USC.
