Prediction

Pelicans 125, Trail Blazers 116

Moneyline (ML)

The PELICANS (-176) look for the four-game regular-season sweep of the Trail Blazers (+145), and they should be back to full strength after the break with Ingram declaring himself ready for Friday’s tilt. That’s great news for the visitors. Conversely, Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard (groin) is out tonight.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Pelicans to win returns a profit of just $5.68.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The PELICANS (-4.5, -106) have been in decent shape with rookie Zion Williamson leading the team’s resurgence. He was certainly well worth the wait. He posted 31 points and nine boards in last week’s lopsided win over the Blazers, and he is averaging 22.5 PPG in his 10 games overall. Ingram, who is expected to be ready to roll, is averaging 24.9 PPG with 6.4 RPG per outing. The dynamic duo are ready to help the Pellies fly into the second half on a successful note. New Orleans has cashed in seven of the past 10 meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 237.5 (-106) is quite a high number, but the over has connected in 18 of the past 23 for New Orleans, and eight of the past 10 on the road. The over is also 5-0 in their past five as a favorite.

For the Blazers, the over is 11-3 in the past 14 and 8-3 in their past 11 as a home ‘dog. The over is also a ridiculous 36-15-1 in the past 52 in Rip City.

Oklahoma City Thunder at New Orleans Pelicans odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Oklahoma City Thunder at New Orleans Pelicans sports betting odds, with NBA matchup analysis and picks.

Thunder at Pelicans: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 2 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Pelicans 110, Thunder 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Thunder (+140) head into their fourth game against the Pelicans (-167), holding a 3-0 season-series lead. But New Orleans has played well recently, winning three straight, while Oklahoma City has lost back-to-back games. The reason for this is obvious: Zion Williamson. With Zion in the lineup, the Pelicans are 5-4 and he’s averaging an impressive 21.0 points, on 57.6% shooting, and 7.7 rebounds per game.

However, do we get the above-.500 Pelicans with Zion team or the one that is eight games under .500? The Thunder’s 24-6 record against below-.500 teams speaks volumes. Furthermore, Ingram’s status should be monitored if you’re considering betting this game. In their first meeting, Ingram left early with an injury and the Pelicans lost 115-104.

This is a coin flip game and I will NOT WAGER on the moneyline.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The trends heavily favor the Thunder +3.5 (-115). Oklahoma City has the best ATS record on the road at 20-5, and is a solid 17-4 ATS as a road dog. The Thunder fair better in games projected to be down to the wire than the Pelicans: Oklahoma City is 11-4 ATS when getting 1-2.5 points and New Orleans is 3-6 ATS when laying 1-2.5 points. Finally, the Thunder have the best ATS record in conference games at 24-11.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The line is 233.5 (Over -115, Under -106). All three Thunder-Pelicans games this season have went Under the projected total. But just like the moneyline, the Over/Under seems to be a toss-up. If you handicap the Pelicans to win then you have to like the Over since they are third in Pace and score for the fourth most points per game. But if you like the Thunder then the Under suits you more because they’re 23rd in Pace, 10th in opponent’s points per game and have an O/U record of 25-28-1. I’m PASSING here.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Clippers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Clippers NBA matchup, with NBA betting odds, picks and best bets.

The Minnesota Timberwolves (15-32) and Los Angeles Clippers (33-15) will square off at 3:30 p.m. ET inside Staples Center in L.A. Saturday. We analyze the Timberwolves-Clippers odds and lines, with NBA betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Timberwolves at Clippers: Key injuries

  • PG Derrick Walton Jr. (elbow) questionable

Timberwolves at Clippers: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Saturday at 9:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Clippers 123, Timberwolves 107

Moneyline (ML)

The Clippers (-625) will cost you more than six times your potential return on investment. That’s just way too expensive, even if L.A. is a near-certainly to top the Timberwolves (+425). AVOID.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

These two teams have something in common — they each lost to the Sacramento Kings in their most recent outing. The CLIPPERS (-10.5, -106) should bounce back against the lowly Timberwolves (+10.5, -115), a team reeling after blowing a 17-point lead in the final three minutes against Sacramento, being forced to overtime on a controversial bucket at the buzzer that should have counted, and then losing a rough one.

The T-Wolves are just 8-20-1 ATS over their past 29 games overall, and 0-4 ATS in their last four against winning teams. While the Clips are 1-5 ATS in the past six against teams with a winning percentage under .400, they’re 22-7 ATS in the past 29 after a straight-up loss.

Over/Under (O/U)

As of 9:30 a.m. ET, the over/under for this game has not been posted. However, the approach to this bet should remain the same regardless of the posted total: the over is the play as long as Leonard is in the lineup. If he is held out of action — and he could potentially sit with a weak opponent on the schedule — then the under would be the lean. The Over is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings at Staples, and 7-1 in the previous eight battles overall.

Grizzlies at Pelicans: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:35 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Pelicans 112, Grizzlies 111

Moneyline (ML)

The PELICANS (-222) are the play at home. They’re five games out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, but with F Zion Williamson easing into the lineup for the stretch run, hope springs eternal in the Crescent City. The Grizzlies (+180) are hanging onto the eighth spot in the West right now, and they enter on a four-game winning streak, including victories in each of their past two outings.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (+5.5, -115) are worth a look catching points in the Big Easy. Not only are they on a four-game winning streak, but they’re 4-0 ATS during the span, too, and 18-7-1 ATS across the past 26 overall. Memphis has also covered four of the past five games on the road. The Grizz will be looking to avenge a 126-116 loss at FedExForum back on Jan. 20, and that was before Zion made his debut.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 239.5 (+100) is the play in this battle of southern rivals. The Under is 7-2 across the past nine games for the Grizzlies, including that Jan. 20 meeting which had a line of 242.5. That game actually hit the Under by just a half-point. Expect fewer points, with better defense for NOLA with Zion in the middle.

Spurs at Pelicans: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 8 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Pelicans 126, Spurs 117

Moneyline (ML)

Back the PELICANS (-167). In one of the most highly anticipated games for the NBA, we finally get to see rookie PF Zion Williamson in action for the first time in a regular-season game, barring a last-second setback. The crowd at Smoothie King Center will be rocking, and it will be interesting to see how head coach Alvin Gentry folds him into action with the Pellies doing well with SF Brandon Ingram up front and solid backcourt play lately.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The PELICANS (-3.5, -115) have the potential to be really good down the stretch. While they’re in last place of the Southwest Division, they’re just 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot. They’re 3 games back of the Spurs (+3.5, -106), one team they’ll be chasing, so this is a super important game. The Pelicans will use the energy of Zion’s return to ‘spur’ them on to a win and cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 236.5 (-115) is worth a small-unit play, even with this high number. The Over is 11-1 in the past 12 games for the Pelicans, and 6-0 in their past six home games. The Over is 11-5 in San Antonio’s past 16 games overall, and 4-0 in the past four on the road against teams with a losing home record. All signs point to a high-scoring affair.

How to Watch Pelicans vs. Grizzlies, NBA Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Pelicans vs. Grizzlies Live Online.

The New Orleans Pelicans are set to get Zion Williamson back this week, with the top pick in the draft ready to make his season debut on Wednesday. Before that, though, the Pelicans on Monday will take on the Memphis Grizzlies, who boast an exciting rookie in Ja Morant.

Pelicans vs. Grizzlies

When: Monday, January 20

Time: 5:00 p.m. ET

TV: TNT

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

New Orleans (16-27) has been playing well near the end of Williamson’s absence, with its last game being a close 133-130 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at home. Derrick Favors led the Pelicans with 22 points and converted all 10 of his field goal attempts in the game. The Pelicans were unable to stop Kawhi Leonard, as his 39 points helped push the Clippers over the finish line. But the improved play of Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball, combined with the return of Williamson, has inspired optimism in New Orleans for now.

Memphis (20-22) has plenty of reason for optimism as well, as it continues its recent hot streak with a 113-109 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Dillon Brooks led the Grizzlies with 26 points in the victory and the team shot over 50 percent from the field. Brooks and Morant have developed nicely this season, with both the Grizzlies and the Pelicans looking to have the pieces in place to be tough opponents in the Western Conference in the years to come.

Lonzo Ball gets revenge on Patrick Beverley three years later by calling him short

Ah, yes. Sweet, sweet vengeance.

Lonzo Ball was one of the most talked about rookies in recent memory when he came into the NBA.

We literally followed his every move as he sold out Summer League arenas. We tracked what shoes he was wearing every game, his television appearances and literally every word his father was saying about him.

Looking back on it? Yeah, we were wilding, collectively. But that’s what we do! It’s not Lonzo Ball’s fault.

Patrick Beverley didn’t care. He didn’t like it one bit and he vowed to embarrass the rookie in his NBA debut when the Lakers played the Clippers.

Yes, it was absolutely and EXTREMELY petty. Every minute of it was mean…and we loved it.

Finally, three years and one trade later, Lonzo got his revenge on Pat Bev for being a jerk.

On Saturday, Ball shot a fadeaway jumper over Beverley from the post and delivered the worst insult you could possibly throw at another man — he called him short.

Ah, yes. Sweet, sweet vengeance. It’s such a beautiful thing.

Though, I’m sure now, Ball probably needs to be a bit careful. Knowing how intense Beverley is, he’ll probably add this moment to some insane list of reasons (some fictitious and some real) to make Ball’s life as awful as possible. Just because.

Zion Williamson’s NBA debut is booting a potential playoff preview off ESPN

Zion Williamson’s regular season debut will be on national TV.

After sitting out for months with an injured knee, Zion Williamson is finally going to make his NBA debut against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, January 22nd.

TV networks bet big on the Pelicans to start the season, assuming that Williamson would be in the lineup to draw eyeballs. Williamson’s debut was supposed to be on October 22 against the Raptors to open the regular season against the NBA champions but, of course, he was injured. When the NBA schedule was revealed, the Pelicans were scheduled to play a franchise-record 30 games on national TV.

There was only one problem, though. Zion’s return game against the Spurs wasn’t slated to be on national TV. ESPN decided to flex the Pelicans game in their Wednesday primetime slot in favor of a matchup between the Nuggets and the Rockets.

This is an…interesting decision. And one that’s sure to get a bunch of Nuggets and Rockets fans riled up. They’re swapping out two surefire playoff teams who could play each other in May for two teams who are scratching and clawing for the 8th seed.

But whatever. It’s Zion. He’s great and so are his dunks. That’s what we’re here for. Not James Harden’s floppy buckets or to yell at Nikola Jokic for not shooting enough until the 3rd quarter.

This is definitely the right choice.

Prediction

Jazz 117, Pelicans 100

Moneyline (ML)

The Jazz (-200) are heavy favorites against the banged-up Pelicans (+165), who cannot be trusted at home. They have just too many injuries to trust at home. AVOID. There just isn’t enough value in backing Utah with a $10 bet returning a profit of only $5 with an outright victory.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The JAZZ (-5.5, +105) have been good to me on this road trip, as I’ve played them both in Washington (-6.5) in an 11-point win, and in Brooklyn (-3) in an 11-point win last time out. Let’s continue to go to that well and take advantage of the banged-up Pellies.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 224.5 (+100) is a good play, especially since it’s uncertain who will be ready to go for NOLA. If we have a shorthanded situation for the home team, and a potential blowout, that is usually good news for Under bettors. Routs, and close games with no fouling, are the friends of an Under bettor.

Watch: Georgia football attends Pelicans game in New Orleans

Georgia football attends Pelicans game in New Orleans Saturday

The Georgia football team is back in the Sugar Bowl for the second-straight season after finishing as SEC runner-up in Atlanta to LSU. This meant the same practice routines and New Orleans rituals for the Bulldogs, including a Pelicans game and a trip to Central City BBQ.

The Dawgs watched New Orleans take on the Indiana Pacers Saturday at the Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans defeated the Pacers 120 to 98, despite star forward Zion Williamson still being sidelined to injury.

Meanwhile, Georgia faces Baylor at 8:45 pm on Wednesday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
