The New Orleans Pelicans (42-27) visit the Miami Heat (38-31) Friday. Tip from Kaseya Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Pelicans vs. Heat odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

Season series: Heat lead 1-0

New Orleans snapped a 3-game winning streak with a 121-106 loss to the Orlando Magic Thursday while failing to cover as a 2.5-point road favorite. G Trey Murphy III scored a team-high 21 points off the bench, and 5 total New Orleans players scored in double figures. The Pelicans shot 53.8% from the field in the loss.

Miami got back in the win column with a 107-104 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday, covering as a 3-point road underdog. F Jimmy Butler had a game-high 30 points and was 1 of 4 Miami players to score in double figures. The Heat shot 45.8% from the field in the win.

In their 1st meeting (Feb. 23), Miami covered as a 2-point underdog in a 106-95 win at New Orleans as the Under (220.5) hit. A 4th-quarter melee resulted in suspensions for players from both teams. Pelicans G Jose Alvardo and F Naji Marshall were suspended for 3 games and 1 game, respectively. Heat C Thomas Bryant served a 3-game suspension, while Butler and F Nikola Jovic were each suspended for 1 game.

Pelicans at Heat picks and predictions

Prediction

Pelicans 109, Heat 104

Moneyline

BET PELICANS (+130).

New Orleans has won 7 of its last 10 games, including 4 of its last 5 on the road. It has a 22-14 road record this season and plays a Miami squad that has a 17-15 home record and has lost back-to-back games in South Florida.

The Pelicans have stepped it up defensively of late holding opponents to 107 or fewer points in 7 of their last 9 games, including 3 of their last 4. The Heat have scored 107 or fewer points in 4 of their last 7 games, including 2 of their last 3.

Dealing with crucial injuries is what will hold Miami back from a win Friday night.

Against the spread

PASS.

The odds are better on the Pelicans to win than to cover.

Over/Under

BET OVER 207.5 (-115).

While both teams have struggled hitting the Over recently, with both sporting a 3-7 Over record in their last 10 games, 207.5 is too low of a total to be confident betting the Under.

The Pelicans have scored 106 or more points in 7 of their last 10 games, including 4 of their last 6 while allowing at least 104 in 4 of their last 5.

The Heat have scored 104 or more points in 7 of their last 10 games and have allowed 104 or more in 6 of their last 10.

Miami Heat at New Orleans Pelicans odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Miami Heat at New Orleans Pelicans odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Miami Heat (35-20) visit the Big Easy Thursday to play the New Orleans Pelicans (22-32). Tip-off at Smoothie King Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Heat at Pelicans odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

Miami has won and covered three straight road games – at the Spurs 112-95 Feb. 3, Hornets 104-86 Saturday and the Wizards 121-100 Monday. The Heat are 4-3 straight-up (SU) and 3-4 against the spread (ATS) since Jan. 28.

New Orleans is on a 4-game winning streak, but those wins didn’t come against the best competition. The Pelicans beat the awful Pistons and Rockets (twice) and an inconsistent Nuggets squad over those four games. NOLA is 4-3 SU and 5-2 ATS since Jan. 28.

The Heat crushed the Pelicans 113-98 in Miami as 6.5-point home favorites Nov. 17 and the Over cashed on a 210-point total. Miami was even without PG Kyle Lowry and All-Star C Bam Adebayo.

Heat at Pelicans odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Heat 115, Pelicans 106

Money line

PASS.

I’m very interested in NOLA after it acquired SG C.J. McCollum via trade earlier this week, especially since the Pelicans are the 10th and final play-in seed in the West currently. NOLA would get even more interesting if PF Zion Williamson returned this season.

However, I’m on Miami laying the points but hate the Heat (-190) at this price considering the Pelicans’ roster.

Against the spread

BET the HEAT -4.5 (-110) for 1 unit because the Pelicans struggle when they play strong competition and Miami is very profitable when well-rested.

According to CleaningTheGlass.com (CTG), the Pelicans are 6-14 SU versus teams in the top 10 of efficiency differential with a minus-10.4 adjusted-net rating (ranked 25th) and a minus-3.2 ATS margin (ranked 21st).

Furthermore, the Heat haven’t played since Monday and are 7-2 ATS with two or three days of rest (an NBA’s best plus-12.3 ATS margin) and an NBA-best 9-4 ATS when playing with a rest advantage (plus-6.8 ATS margin).

BET the HEAT -4.5 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 217.5 (-112) because both teams have high offensive free-throw attempt and defensive free-throw attempt rates, so there should be a lot of easy points scored in this game.

Also, all three referees assigned to this game have officiated more to the Over. We could see a ton of free throws in this game.

But it’s only a “lean” to the OVER 217.5 (-112) since both teams play at a snail’s pace. NOLA is 15-26 O/U as an underdog and six of the last seven Heat-Pelicans meetings have gone Under the total.

Pelicans at Heat: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pelicans 117, Heat 112

Money line (ML)

The Heat were out-scored 34-24 in the fourth quarter of their opening 113-107 loss Wednesday at the Orlando Magic. Miami shot 50.6% from the field but only made seven 3’s after making the sixth-most 3’s per game last season (13.6).

Pelicans All-Star SF Brandon Ingram powered New Orleans to a 113-99 road victory Wednesday vs. the Toronto Raptors. Ingram had a game-high 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting with 9 rebounds and 11 assists, and was instrumental in the Pelicans’ 63-42 second-half performance.

These teams were 1-1 straight up and ATS in last season’s head-to-head series, but the Pelicans were without Ingram, PF Zion Williamson, PG Lonzo Ball and SG J.J. Redick in the 109-94 loss at Miami Nov. 16, 2019.

There are a couple of reasons why the Pelicans are the right side in this spot. First, not only will New Orleans have its All-Star (Ingram) and second-year phenom (Williams), but it has added veterans C Steven Adams and SG Eric Bledsoe into the fold for experience and defense.

The Adams addition in particular could end up being a huge boon for the Pelicans, who were a solid rebounding team last season and could improve to an elite rebounding team this season. Adams showed his worth opening night by clogging up the paint, which helped the Pelicans gain a 45-35 rebounding edge over the Raptors.

Second, the Heat had the third-highest winning percentage at home but the COVID-19 situation and their short turnaround weaken whatever home-court advantage they had. Over the course of the season, Miami is a tricky spot to play because of the vibrant nightlife, which could take away the focus of visiting players.

I don’t expect this to affect a young Pelicans team on Christmas in the COVID-era with New Orleans’ having veteran leadership like Adams and Redick. Williamson isn’t even old enough to drink, yet.

Furthermore, whatever boost the Heat were to get from a traditionally tepid Miami crowd won’t be there because no fans are allowed at Heat games for the foreseeable future.

GIMME PELICANS (+135) for a half-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Let’s get a couple of possession worth of insurance and BET PELICANS +3.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

NBA Christmas should start with a shootout with the Heat being an excellent 3-point shooting team that should bounce back from a poor-shooting performance in their first game, and a Pelicans team that is sneaky deep. Miami doesn’t have a lot of size on its roster and that’ll give New Orleans the option to attack the rim and should free up the shooters to hit some 3’s.

Officially, I “LEAN” OVER 224.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit because I’m more confident in the Pelicans to cover the spread.
