Seahawks top roster cut snubs ahead of 2020 season

Here is a look at the Seattle Seahawks’ top roster cut snubs ahead of the 2020 NFL season, including Shaquem Griffin and Paul Richardson.

One of the most difficult days of the offseason is roster cut day. This is where lifelong dreams of young men can be dashed, and the final hopes of old veterans end.

While a great many of these players will still find themselves on an NFL roster or in a spot on the practice squad, it is still an emotional day for them, their families, their coaches, and even the fans.

The Seahawks have trimmed their roster down to 53 and they had to make tough choices as well.

Here are the top roster cut snubs from Seattle.

5 players cut by other teams that the Jets should target

Jets Wire takes a look at five recently cut players that New York should consider targeting.

The cut deadline has come and gone, but that does not mean the Jets are done filling out their 53-man roster.

There are numerous intriguing players at positions of need now available on the open market for New York to target. That Jets are not going to land a game-changing talent at this point in the summer, but there are plenty of opportunities for Joe Douglas to bolster New York’s depth chart before Week 1.

With that being said, here are five notable players cut by other teams that the Jets could target.

Rasul Douglas

The Jets need help at cornerback and Rasul Douglas is familiar with Joe Douglas. That makes him the most likely notable cut to land in New York.

A third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Douglas endured an up and down three-year tenure with the Eagles. Despite being one of the few corners on Philadelphia’s depth chart with the ability to stay healthy, Douglas was frequently passed over on the depth chart. He started 18 games for the Eagles but did not make much of an impact, recording 25 pass breakups and only five interceptions.

Douglas’ durability should make him a priority cornerback target for the Jets. At this point, all New York needs at the position is an experienced player that can stay healthy.

Seahawks waive UDFA DE Eli Mencer to make room for Paul Richardson

The Seattle Seahawks waived undrafted free agent defensive end Eli Mencer to make space on the roster for wide receiver Paul Richardson.

The Seattle Seahawks recently signed wide receiver Paul Richardson to a one-year deal and waived undrafted rookie defensive end Eli Mencer to make room on the 80-man roster.

Seattle drafted Richardson in 2014, but he suffered numerous injuries throughout his first two seasons before showing flashes in 2016 and breaking out in 2017. The team let him walk in free agency and he signed a five-year, $40 million contract with Washington, where he spent two years before being released.

Mencer was an undrafted free agent out of the University of Albany. He set the program record for sacks as a senior with 14.5 in 14 games, led the FCS with five forced fumbles and led the Great Danes with 24 tackles for loss.

The Seahawks waived Mencer at little to no cost due to his status as a UDFA. They had to cut someone to make space for Richardson, and Mencer turned out to be the collateral damage. Since he was not claimed via waivers, he has now reverted to the injured reserve.

Seahawks bring back former Seattle wide receiver Paul Richardson

The Seattle Seahawks are bringing back former Seattle wide receiver Paul Richardson, who spent the last two seasons in Washington.

The Seattle Seahawks have reunited with another familiar face just in time for the start of the regular season. On Saturday, NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo confirmed the team would be signing wide Paul Richarson back to the roster.

Seattle had hosted Richardson earlier in the week on a visit and the wide receiver had gone through the mandated COVID-19 testing.

The Richardson signing makes sense in light of the recent injuries to the receiving corps. Phillip Dorsett (foot) and John Ursua (hamstring) have both missed practiced over the last week.

Richardson was originally selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Seattle before signing in Washington in 2018. He was released this February.

Seattle hosts former Seahawks Justin Britt, Paul Richardson on visits

The Seattle Seahawks are hosting two former teammates for visits on Wednesday, center Justin Britt and wide receiver Paul Richardson.

The Seattle Seahawks are continuing to scour the league’s remaining, available players to help bolster the roster ahead of the 2020 regular season.

On Wednesday the team hosted a couple of familiar faces – former Seahawks center Justin Britt and former Seattle wide receiver, Paul Richardson.

Both visits were listed on the NFL’s official transaction wire.

The potential return of Britt seems intriguing due to the fact the Seahawks have been struggling to find a legit, starting center following his release earlier in the year.

Britt finished last season on the Seahawks injured reserve after tearing his ACL Week 8.

Richardson is reportedly undergoing COVID-19 testing at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center and could sign with Seattle as soon as this week.

The Seahawks have a rest day after their mock game and return to duty on Friday.

4 remaining free agent wide receivers the Jets can bring in to address lack of depth

Jets Wire takes a look at four wide receivers the Jets can add to address their lack of depth at the position.

To say the Jets are thin at wide receiver would be an understatement.

Entering this week, New York’s depth at the position comprised of Vyncint Smith, Braxton Berrios, Josh Doctson and a handful of undrafted free agents — a relatively underwhelming group, to say the least. On Thursday, Doctson opted out of the 2020 season, compounding the issue further.

Fortunately for the Jets, there are still some decent free agent wide receivers available for the taking. There is not any star power left on the market, but a few wideouts who offer value. Unless general manager Joe Douglas wants to roll the dice on unproven players, that should be enough for him to strongly consider making a move.

If Douglas opts to add another wide receiver before Week 1, here are four potential targets that could address New York’s lack of depth.

Demaryius Thomas

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Bringing back Demaryius Thomas might be the Jets’ best option at this point in the offseason.

Thomas knows Adam Gase’s offense like the back of his hand and is familiar with the dynamic of New York’s locker room. Not only is Thomas a big-bodied receiver that has a rapport with Sam Darnold, but he was also a captain at one point last season. That is a testament to what he can bring as a mentor to the younger players in the wide receiver room.

It’s tough to learn an entirely new offense in a month’s time. Thomas would not have to endure the ups and downs that come along with adapting to a new scheme this late in the offseason. Joe Douglas might want to add some fresh blood, but with all things considered, re-signing Thomas would be the logical move.

4 remaining free agent the Jets could target following the NFL draft

Jets Wire takes a look at four free agents the Jets should consider pursuing now that the draft is over.

Now that the 2020 NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror, it’s time for Jets general manager Joe Douglas to focus on filling out the rest of New York’s roster before training camp kicks off.

There are still plenty of quality free agents remaining on the market, which is good news for the Jets considering the holes they still need to fill. Douglas did a nice job addressing positions of need, but there is still work to be done.

So, who are some free agents out there that the Jets could go after? Let’s get into it.

Logan Ryan

The Jets drafted Bryce Hall in the fifth round and traded for Quincy Wilson, but there is still something to be said about the need for experienced and quality depth on New York’s cornerback depth chart.

Logan Ryan has already been linked to the Jets and a return to New Jersey for the veteran corner does not sound like a bad idea for either party. New York should not be content with its current crop at the position. It is a solid group, but the Jets need more if they want to contend in 2020. Ryan could be the one to take Gang Green’s cornerback play to the next level.

Remaining April free agents left for Bills to consider

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Most attention has turned to the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft at the end of April. But that doesn’t mean the free agent market has closed.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane recently spoke to reporters and admitted much of his attention is now on rookies. However, he also said that the young prospects don’t have his full attention. He’ll be sure to keep an eye on the open market, too.

Could there be any players still available that could interest the Bills? There certainly are.

Here are 10 players still on the open market for the Bills to consider:

RB Devonta Freeman

Age: 28

This connection between the Bills and Devonta Freeman have been made since before he was even cut by the Falcons this offseason.

Freeman could provide a complement to Devin Singeltary as a pass-catching option. He caught 59 catches in 2019 with the Falcons and 257 in his career, including 73 in the 2015 season. But by most accounts, Freeman took a step back last season. He only averaged 3.6 yards per carry last year, a career-low, but overall, Freeman is at 4.2 yards per carry for his career.

Still, Freeman could be a low-cost option to pair up with Singletary in Buffalo’s backfield. However, he’s not an overly-large player that would mix well with Singletary’s smaller, shifty game with the Bills and he’s not much of a special teams guy like TJ Yeldon would be. Overall as a back, Freeman has certainly had more success than Yeldon in his career, though.

5 remaining free agents the Jets should be interested in

Jets Wire takes a look at five remaining free agents Joe Douglas and the Jets should be interested in.

The first wave of free agency is over, but that does not mean there are not a handful of standout players still available on the open market.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas spent the first couple of weeks of free agency revamping the offensive line, addressing the cornerback position, adding a deep threat to replace Robby Anderson and taking care of a handful of in-house free agents. Even with all of the work Douglas put in throughout the opening days of free agency, New York’s roster still has numerous holes that need to be filled.

Who can come in and fill those holes? Let’s take a look at five remaining free agents the Jets should be interested in.

Jadeveon Clowney

This one is a no-brainer, as Clowney is not only arguably the best remaining free agent on the market, but easily the best remaining pass rusher.

Considering their need for an EDGE, Clowney should be at the top of the Jets’ free agent board right now. New York is rumored to be in the running for the former No. 1 overall pick’s services, so it’s safe to assume that he is at this point.

Clowney has battled injury and inconsistent play throughout his career, but he is worth taking a risk on. The Jets have rolled the dice on far less talented pass rushers in the past.

2020 NFL Free Agency: Rounding out with Saints options from the Redskins

The New Orleans Saints will consider pending free agents from every team during the 2020 offseason, including the Washington Redskins.

[jwplayer Ox8MJYE5-ThvAeFxT]

Well, we’ve reached the end of our daily series previewing pending free agents from every NFL team, identifying potential targets for the New Orleans Saints along the way. Surveying the league has been an informative journey, revealing the depth of this year’s free agency class and finding which teams may have options for the Saints — or be in competition with New Orleans in bidding wars for prized additions.

Our survey wraps up with the Washington Redskins. Here is their full list of pending free agents, with a few picked out as possible Saints targets at the bottom:

  • CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
  • CB Aaron Colvin
  • DE Nate Orchard
  • DE Treyvon Hester (RFA)
  • DE Chris Odom
  • DE Caleb Brantley (RFA)
  • DE Myles Humphrey (ERFA)
  • FB Michael Burton
  • LB Jon Bostic
  • OC Tony Bergstrom
  • OG Brandon Scherff
  • OG Ereck Flowers
  • OT Donald Penn
  • QB Case Keenum
  • QB Colt McCoy
  • QB Josh Woodrum (ERFA)
  • RB Chris Thompson
  • RB Wendell Smallwood
  • SS Kenny Ladler
  • TE Jordan Reed
  • TE Vernon Davis
  • TE Jerome Cunningham (RFA)
  • WR Paul Richardson

One player already familiar to the Saints is fullback Michael Burton, who spent the 2019 offseason with New Orleans before he was released during roster cuts. He signed with Washington in mid-October and appeared in 10 games, logging 68 snaps on offense and 177 on special teams. The Saints lost Zach Line, their starter the last few years, to retirement this offseason so Burton would make sense as a candidate to bring back into training camp.

While Brandon Scherff would have been one of the biggest targets in free agency, he’s likely to be franchise tagged. But keep an eye on left guard Ereck Flowers, who would make sense as veteran competition with Nick Easton and Cameron Tom in replacement of Andrus Peat. Flowers flamed out as a left tackle but has turned his career around after moving inside.

While Jordan Reed and Paul Richardson are both dynamic receiving threats, they’ve each struggled with serious injuries in recent years and may not be suited for starting jobs and prolonged exposure to contact. The Saints could make a run at either of them in hopes of quick returns to good health, but they might be better off looking for younger options who have experienced less wear and tear.
