Rookies Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker could make Patriots’ passing game better than you think

Patriots rookie receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker could make the team’s passing game better than you think it can be.

The book on the 2024 New England Patriots is that their receiver corps is not ready for prime time. And given that the current cabal of receivers is led by veterans Kendrick Bourne, Jalen Reagor, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, K.J. Osborn, and JuJu Smith-Schuster, there’s a credible argument to be made that there’s not a lot of there there, as Gertrude Stein once said of the city of Oakland.

But if the Patriots, rookie quarterback Drake Maye, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, and new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt are to transcend all that, the answers could very well reside with two first-year pass-catchers: Washington’s Ja’Lynn Polk, selected with the 37th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 draft, and UCF’s Javon Baker, selected with the 110th overall pick in the fourth round.

Both receivers are sleepers to a point, and they’ve each shown a lot on tape already. Last season for Washington, Polk set career highs in targets (108), receptions (69), receiving yards (1,159), and receiving touchdown (nine). Polk was also good for 14 catches on passes of 20 or more air yards on 28 such targets for 567 yards and five touchdowns.

At the 2024 scouting combine, I asked Polk for his favorite college play, and he brought up this 38-yard catch against Michigan State in which he ran a deep over route, and somehow came up with the catch despite getting whacked by safety Jaden Mangham at the catch point.

As for Baker, the former Alabama transfer who couldn’t find a place with the Crimson Tide in 2020 and 2021 had most of the answers to the tests in 2023. For the UCF Knights, Baker caught 52 passes on 84 targets for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns. On deep passes, he was particularly lethal, bringing in 15 attempts of 20 or more air yards on 30 targets for 574 yards and four touchdowns.

Moreover, and this is especially important for the Patriots’ receiver group as it’s been constructed for years, both Polk and Baker can consistently gain separation from aggressive coverage.

As Polk said after he was drafted, he understands how to win with multiple positions and deployments, and that will pay off in the NFL. Last season, 36% of his snaps came in the slot.

“I think being a new player, you’ve got to be able to know how to move around, do different things and be able to go out there and contribute to your offense. So, being versatile, being able to move inside and outside, know what everybody’s doing on the field is very important. So, I think it’s my job to know as much as I can, to go out there and make plays for those guys that are putting in work each and every play. I want to put my quarterback in the best situation possible. I know I’m going to be able to go out there and make plays for him. So, just being able to help other guys around me and make their job easier as well, so when that guy’s lining up next to me, he can trust me. He can put the trust in me that I’m going to be able to know what I’m going to do. We can feed off each other, be able to communicate and help each other as well.”

Baker had 75% of his snaps outside last season, but he can also win from the slot. And he came into the building having some experience with the Patriots’ rookie first-round quarterback.

People don’t know this, but when Drake Maye was committed to Alabama at first, we always used to practice and throw around,” Baker said after he was drafted. “So, me and Drake Maye got a connection going on. Drake Maye, I think, in my opinion, is the best quarterback in this draft, so when we connect again, it’s going to be a good connection.

“Competitive and trying to get the ball in whatever spots I ask him to put it, he’d put it there. So, he’d be just competitive, a competitive quarterback, and that’s what I like in a quarterback. He is somebody that could push me, and I’ll push him.”

New head coach Jerod Mayo is excited about both new additions.

“I’ll start with Polk,” Mayo said at the end of the draft. “He’s one of those guys that before we even get to the main responsibility of a receiver as far as get open, catch the ball and run with it, he’s one of those guys that isn’t afraid to do the dirty work. When we talk about the dirty work, obviously we have a good set of backs. But sometimes you need those receivers to come in there and kind of dig out support, and he does that at a very high level. Now, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of Polk. He’s one of those guys, smooth route runner, has good hands, can do a lot of different things and he’s smart. That’s one thing that we covered around here. He’s flexible, can play in different spots, and I’m excited to really see him out there.

“Then really, when you talk about Javon, look, you talk about run after catch, the run after catch, this guy is aggressive, and I would say Bake is all about — he’s all ball. He’s all ball, which I can appreciate. You can see the passion come through when you watch them on film. Two guys that obviously have different skill sets but at the same time will help our team going forward.”

So, maybe there’s more to the Patriots’ receiver corps than many might think, and perhaps two rookies will lead the way.

Report: Commanders and Patriots are ‘apprehensive to trade down’

A new report suggests the Commanders and Patriots are reluctant to move down.

The NFL owners meetings are taking place this week.

There is discussion and voting regarding rule changes, and the media, of course, is finding ways to still talk about the draft ad nauseam until the day it arrives, Thursday, April 25.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter Monday recalled, “At the meeting last year, lots of talk on Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson. This year, it will be the teams trying to come up to Washington’s spot at 2 and New England’s spot at 3 in the draft. Though, both teams are apprehensive to give up those picks.”

The thinking behind such a comment is that both the Commanders and the Patriots are in such dire need of a starting quarterback that they will be more inclined to not want to move back in the draft, choosing to stay put at No. 2 and 3 and therefore selecting their new respective quarterbacks.

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy had his pro day last week and impressed, making a good enough showing that he is being projected even higher up the draft board by increasing numbers of analysts.

He is a good enough athlete that he has entered the second tier of Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and now McCarthy. McCarthy had initially been graded much lower due to the fact that the Michigan offense was a run-dominated offense.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn recently referred to Daniels simply as a “game changer.” The signing of Marcus Mariota, also led to many instantly responding it meant the team was going to draft Daniels. But this conveniently ignores the Commanders actually first pursued Sam Darnold prior to Mariota.

All three of the second-tier quarterbacks have much growing to do in their NFL careers. Yet, they have displayed enough talent and mobility that they are considered to be high first-round selections.

If you are the Patriots or Commanders, you don’t want to get too cute here and trade down too far, not obtaining a quality quarterback in the draft.

Thus, the teams might indeed be increasingly apprehensive to trade down, just as Schefter expressed on Monday.

We still have another month of this…

2024 NFL mock draft roundup: OL prospect joins list of players picked for Patriots

Could the Patriots draft an offensive lineman at No. 3 overall?

The New England Patriots will enter the 2024 NFL draft with quarterback, wide receiver and offensive tackle as their three biggest needs.

Granted, they will have an opportunity to fix many of their issues in free agency, but the draft gives them their best opportunity of building for the future, while also saving big money up front.

Mock drafts for the Patriots are constantly changing with predictions of the team moving up, trading back or just flat out staying put at No. 3 overall.

One mock draft this week has the Patriots moving all the way up to No. 1 on the board to select their quarterback of the future. Others had the team locking down Ohio State star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. or even Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt.

Here’s this week’s round-up of 2024 NFL mock draft picks for New England:

2024 NFL mock draft: Early trade shakes things up on draft board

A trade shakes things up in this 2024 NFL mock draft

Like every year, there are certain expectations of how the 2024 NFL draft board will play out, but all it takes is one unexpected move—one team zigging when everyone else zags—to shake everything up.

There are a plethora of quarterback talent with the top-three projected to go with the first three picks overall in most mock drafts. However, Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. might be the best overall player in the entire draft. So a team reaching for him earlier than expected could kick-start a domino effect of change down the board.

For a team like the New England Patriots, they need one of the top-three quarterbacks, a high-end wide receiver and one of the top offensive tackles in the draft. A team with so many needs and the option to trade down can be incredibly unpredictable in this situation.

In this mock draft scenario, the Patriots swing a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, another quarterback-needy team that could be looking for an opportunity to trade up on the board.

Here’s how things shook out:

2024 NFL mock draft roundup: Who was most projected player at No. 3 to Patriots?

Who was the most projected player to the Patriots at No. 3 in this week’s 2024 NFL mock draft roundup?

The great debate for mock draft enthusiasts is what position the New England Patriots should prioritize with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Should they take one of the top-three quarterbacks—Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels? Or, should they go after wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., a No. 1 receiving target and arguably the best overall player in the entire draft?

Whatever decision they make could impact the franchise for years to come. No pressure, right?

Eliot Wolf being in charge of the personnel decisions makes predicting what the Patriots will ultimately do even harder. There will be a clear shift in philosophies with Wolf stepping into a role that was previously owned by former Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Perhaps he doesn’t prioritize either position at the top of the draft board and decides to go after another position of need entirely, such as offensive tackle. There are countless possibilities for the Patriots with the No. 3 pick in the draft.

Here’s this week’s roundup of mock draft predictions for the team:

Full 7-round 2024 NFL mock draft: Patriots land Senior Bowl standout QB to pair with elite weapon

The Patriots get arguably the best player on the board at No. 3 in this full seven-round 2024 NFL mock draft

The New England Patriots are less than three months away from one of the most important decisions in the past 30 years.

A brand new head coach is in the building in Jerod Mayo, and Eliot Wolf is working through the personnel decisions. This is an opportunity for both men to stamp their names on the Patriots.

For better or worse, the team will have a different philosophy heading into the offseason. It’s a breath of fresh air for Patriots fans who grew impatient with the lack of offensive success since Tom Brady’s departure in 2020.

In this mock draft, we’re taking a look at one scenario that could shake up on draft night, netting the Patriots a generational cornerstone receiver and some developmental tackles.

2024 NFL mock draft: Early surprise paves way for Patriots to land QB

Things shake out unexpectedly at the top of this 2024 NFL mock draft board

The Chicago Bears hold all of the cards at the top of the 2024 NFL draft, and the varying paths they could take has the potential to impact every team on the board.

Most notably, it will drastically impact the New England Patriots, who should come in looking to upgrade their dismal quarterback situation from Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones to Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

But they aren’t the only team that’ll be quarterback shopping. The Bears will have the tough decision of either sticking with Justin Fields or moving to a new franchise face under center. There’s also the Washington Commanders and New York Giants, who are two more teams that could be looking for a reset at quarterback.

And what about a trade? If the Bears keep Fields, they could potentially trade down from the No. 1 overall pick, which could put another team in the driver’s seat on draft night.

We kept things simple this time around with the draft order still not being set in stone. There were a couple of early surprises with the Bears taking Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. with the No. 1 overall pick, and Maye going ahead of Williams to the Commanders.

Here’s how the rest of the draft came out with the Patriots holding the No. 3 pick:

Here’s where the Patriots would draft if the season ended today

With Sunday’s loss to the Bills, the Patriots climbed back up the draft board.

The New England Patriots took a loss on the football field, but they earned a win on the 2024 NFL draft board.

On Sunday, the Patriots fell in defeat to the Buffalo Bills at Orchard Park, bringing their overall record to 4-12 on the season.

With the loss and a shocking Week 17 upset win by the Arizona Cardinals against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots are now slated to pick at No. 3 overall in the upcoming draft. That would put them in striking distance of one of the top-three quarterbacks.

The Washington Commanders are expected to take a quarterback, but the Chicago Bears could opt to build around Justin Fields, which means there’s a chance that Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels could all be in play for the Patriots.

Granted, that’s assuming they lose in next week’s season finale against the New York Jets. A loss would guarantee the Patriots a top-three pick, while a win could knock them out of the quarterback sweepstakes entirely.

The next 10 years of the franchise could be riding on whether the Patriots win or lose against the Jets. How’s that for a dramatic conclusion to the 2023 season?

Podcast: Is QB still the top priority for Patriots in 2024 NFL draft?

With the Patriots falling on the draft board, should QB still be their top priority?

Beating the Denver Broncos was the best and worst thing that could have happened to the New England Patriots.

On one hand, they got their fourth win of the season and potentially made it more difficult for owner Robert Kraft to fire coach Bill Belichick. But on the other hand, they played themselves out of the No. 2 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft.

If the season ended today, the Patriots would pick at No. 4.

That number could worsen with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets still left on their regular season schedule. If the Patriots are no longer in position to draft Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, should they still be considering quarterback as a top priority in this year’s draft?

Ryan O’Leary and I discuss the possibilities in this week’s Patriots Wire Podcast. We also delve into Belichick’s future with the team and preview Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Should the Patriots keep quarterback as the top priority, or should they look to address other positions, like receiver or offensive line? If they don’t draft a quarterback, could they turn things around with another year of Bailey Zappe or a bridge veteran quarterback under center of an improved roster?

Kirk Herbstreit makes case for Patriots to draft Heisman-winning QB

There might be an even better QB option for the Patriots, if they fail to land Caleb Williams or Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL draft.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit has a clear target for the New England Patriots to take in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft. He envisions LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels as a good fit for New England.

The Patriots are coming off a win on Thursday night over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Right now, they sit with the second overall selection in the draft.

However, that could change if they keep winning football games. There are marquee quarterbacks at the top of the draft in USC’s Caleb Williams and UNC’s Drake Maye, but Daniels could be a solid option.

He is coming off a stellar 2023 season for LSU that saw him throw for 3,812 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is in the Heisman Trophy conversation and would help New England find a spark at the quarterback position.

Herbstreit made his case for the Patriots taking Daniels on “The Pat McAfee Show” Friday morning.

“If you don’t have the first or the second pick… you put him in that stadium [Gillette Stadium], with Bill Belichick and that defense, and you get a weapon or two to go with those tight ends, there’s a lot to like,” said Herbstreit. “… I hope [Belichick] is back.”

New England is in the market for a top-tier quarterback. The Patriots might be in a position to still focus on winning football games this year and having an opportunity to get Daniels in the draft.
