NFL draft: Who were the last 12 players picked at No. 9 overall?

Let’s take a look at the last 12 players who were taken at this spot in the draft.

The Seattle Seahawks hold the No. 9 overall pick with less than one month to go before the 2022 NFL draft. That puts them in a rare position to land a real difference-maker of a prospect. It’s actually the first time since 2010 (Pete Carroll’s first year) that this team has enjoyed a top-10 pick.

Let’s take a look at the last 12 players who were taken at this spot in the draft.

Patrick Surtain Sr. joins Dolphins’ coaching staff

Patrick Surtain’s son plays cornerback for the Broncos. Denver will face the Dolphins in Miami in 2023.

Patrick Surtain Sr., the father of Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, will join the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff as an assistant coach, according to a report from Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 (via Dolphins Wire).

Surtain, 45, will presumably be the team’s assistant defensive backs coach. He spent the first seven years of his career in Miami after being selected by the Dolphins in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft out of Southern Miss.

The elder Surtain was a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro during his 11-year career, totaling 37 interceptions and 105 pass breakups. Surtain has been a head football coach at the high school level since 2016.

Surtain’s son was selected by the Broncos in the first round of last year’s NFL draft out of Alabama. The younger Surtain earned Pro Bowl first-alternate honors as a rookie in 2021 after breaking up 14 passes and totaling four interceptions, including a 70-yard pick-six.

Miami is not on Denver’s list of opponents in 2022, but the Broncos are scheduled to face the Dolphins on the road in 2023.

Miami Dolphins hire former American Heritage coach Patrick Surtain

Patrick Surtain, who won three championships as the American Heritage head coach, has been hired by his former NFL team, the Miami Dolphins.

After six years and three championships as a coach at the high school level, former NFL player Patrick Surtain has been scooped up by an NFL team.

Surtain will be returning to the Miami Dolphins, the team in which he had the most success as a player over his 11-year career. As a cornerback for the Dolphins from 1998-2004, he made three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams.

He will be joining the Dolphins as a defensive assistant, according to NBC Sports.

Surtain showed his chops as a coach after getting hired by American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) in 2016. Over six seasons at the helm, he led the team to a 65-10 record and won championships in 2016, 2017 and 2020, according to MaxPreps.

Six players who had previously played for American Heritage were selected in the 2021 Draft, according to MaxPreps. One of these players is Surtain’s son, Patrick Surtain Jr., who was picked in the first round by the Denver Broncos and recorded four interceptions and 14 passes defended.

The Dolphins have now added both Surtain and his former teammate, Sam Madison, who made four Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams as he manned the secondary with Surtain in the late-1990s and early-2000s. Former Dolphin Wes Welker has also joined the coaching staff.

Miami, which had back-to-back seasons with records above .500 for the first time since Surtain and Madison were the cornerbacks, is looking to continue its upward trajectory under new head coach Mike McDaniel.

Former Chiefs CB Patrick Surtain joining Sam Madison on Dolphins coaching staff

The #Chiefs lost CBs coach Sam Madison to the #Dolphins and now a former teammate who played for both Miami and Kansas City will join him.

A former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback is joining ex-cornerback coach Sam Madison on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff.

The Dolphins hired Madison away from the Chiefs to become their cornerbacks coach and pass game specialist earlier this week. Now, they are set to hire Patrick Surtain as a defensive backs coach. Not to be confused with his son Pat Surtain II, who plays for the Denver Broncos, the elder Surtain was a former second-round draft pick by Miami in 1998 out of Southern Missississippi. He played seven seasons with the Dolphins before the Chiefs traded for a second-round draft pick ahead of the 2005 NFL season. He’d go on to play three seasons in Kansas City before retiring.

Surtain and Madison both crossed paths as players in the Miami secondary, where they played together from 1998 to 2004. Surtain will likely fill a similar role as Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt has since 2019, working primarily with safeties.

Surtain — like Madison before he joined the Chiefs in 2019 — has never coached at the NFL or collegiate level. He does have coaching experience and success at the high school level though. Since 2016, Surtain has been the head coach of Plantation American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. He’s led the Patriots to three state championships (2016, 2017 and 2020). Surtain was also awarded the High School Football America National Coach of the Year award in 2020.

Report: Dolphins hiring legendary CB Patrick Surtain as assistant coach

It’s a full-on reunion in Miami.

After the Miami Dolphins hired former cornerback Sam Madison to be their cornerbacks coach, they’ve gone back to the same well, grabbing another one of their legendary corners and Madison’s former teammate.

According to Andy Slater, the Dolphins are hiring Patrick Surtain to be a defensive assistant to work with defensive backs.

Surtain was a second-round pick for the Dolphins out of Southern Mississippi in 1998. He played seven seasons for Miami, earning three Pro Bowl nominations, one First-Team All-Pro, and one Second-Team All-Pro.

The Dolphins traded Surtain to the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2004 season for a second-round pick in the 2005 draft that was used to draft defensive end Matt Roth. Surtain signed a seven-year contract with the Chiefs but played just four years there before he was released.

While Surtain has never coached at the NFL or collegiate level, he’s been the head coach of Plantation American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida since 2016. During his time as a high school coach, Surtain led his team to three state championships and received the 2020 High School Football America National Coach of the Year honor.

Alabama lands 3 former players on ESPN’s top 10 rookie list

Alabama lands 3 former players on ESPN’s top 10 rookie list

Alabama has more than its fair share of players currently on NFL rosters. It should come as no surprise that some of the leagues best players are former stars of the Crimson Tide.

Now that the regular season is over and the playoffs are underway, ESPN has decided to release its list of the top ten NFL rookies from the 2021-2022 season.

Alabama landed three of the top ten and a handful of others that just missed the cut.

Representing the Tide was Mac Jones at No. 2, Patrick Surtain II at No. 7, and Jaylen Waddle at No. 8.

Najee Harris, Christian Barmore, and DeVonta Smith all narrowly missed out on being in the top ten.

Patrick Surtain Sr. shares his thoughts on Brian Flores and Tua Tagovailoa

The past gives his opinion on the present.

In the third year of the Brian Flores era, the Miami Dolphins struggled mightily through the first half of the season before adjusting and re-establishing their winning ways.

Those first eight games had a lot of people questioning Flores’ future as well as the future of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. With the team losing games and rumors swirling daily about Deshaun Watson, fans and media alike were left to wonder if the two men who were leading the team would be around much longer.

Through all of this, everyone has shared their opinion on the pair, including former Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain who was asked to give his thoughts about the coach and quarterback in an interview with Time2Play.

“I’m a Tua fan,” Surtain said of Tagovailoa. “I’m a little biased with our Alabama connection. I’ve seen this kid do it, he has some unique traits. He might not have the strongest arm, but his anticipation is amazing. He needs his core receivers back, he hasn’t had his full unit around him in two years. The Dolphins want to see that too before making a long-term decision on him. He has a great work ethic and I’m a big fan.”

This past week against the Giants was just the third game this year that Tagovailoa, DeVante Parker, and Jaylen Waddle all played a majority of the game, and they won two of them. Surtain seems to have similar feelings to a lot of Dolphins fans on the quarterback, and he seems to be a fan of the coach as well.

“I think he’s the man to lead them forward,” Surtain said about Flores. “This is such a fickle business. You can win 10 games one year, and if you fall below those standards the next year you’re gone. I think they need a big-time running back, keep those receivers fit and healthy. They have to keep pushing- the main thing is stability and the ownership should give him a chance. Give him a couple years to get things together.”

In three seasons, Brian Flores has a 21-24 record, but he seems to get a lot out of players. From what they’ve said in interviews and press conferences, everyone in the building loves playing for the guy. If the Dolphins give him time, Flores can be a good coach in the league. And, if he has the support of a Dolphins legend, he must be doing something right.
