Mel Kiper mock draft 2.0: Ravens continue history at LB

The Baltimore Ravens finally find C.J. Mosley’s replacement in the 2020 NFL Draft, Mel Kiper has them selecting LSU Patrick Queen at No. 28

The Baltimore Ravens come into the offseason with not a ton of huge needs. While the needs that exist are big ones, the Ravens are coming off a 14-2 season with a young roster that has a ton of talent, so they aren’t in rebuild mode in the 2020 NFL Draft. The potential exists that Baltimore will see a top player fall right into their laps at one of their major needs. According to ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper, that’s exactly what happened.

In Kiper’s second mock draft, he has the Ravens selecting LSU linebacker Patrick Queen in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

“I love the fit with Queen in Baltimore, which lost C.J. Mosley in free agency last offseason and could replace him a year later with a sideline-to-sideline run-and-hit inside linebacker. This is one of the NFL’s best rosters — look no further than the Ravens putting 12 players in the Pro Bowl — so it’s tough to find a position outside of middle linebacker that could see a rookie come in and start on day one. Keep an eye on a possible trade-down situation here with teams trying to trade into Round 1 to get their guy.”

As Kiper said, Queen would be a great fit for the Ravens and one that fits in their history at the position. He’s got the speed to handle this era’s style of play that will see him often running around in coverage while being a big thumper when asked to come down and hit a running back.

Over the last two seasons at LSU, Queen has 125 total tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, four sacks, one fumble recovery, one interception and two passes defended. Kiper has Queen as the second-best inside linebacker in this draft class behind Kenneth Murray, who he had mocked at No. 19 to the Las Vegas Raiders.

While Queen would make a ton of sense for the Ravens at No. 28, they have bigger needs at pass rusher if they can’t re-sign Matthew Judon and potentially inside offensive lineman if Marshal Yanda retires this offseason. Penn State EDGE Yetur Gross-Matos and guard Cesar Ruiz were still available on Kiper’s mock draft, which could be potential options for Baltimore as well.

Prospect for the Pack: LSU LB Patrick Queen

Profiling LSU linebacker Patrick Queen, a potential Packers pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers must use the 2020 NFL Draft to provide the finishing touches on a team that won 13 regular-season games and got within one game of the Super Bowl during Matt LaFleur’s first season as head coach.

Between now and the draft, Packers Wire will periodically break down one top prospect fitting the Packers’ roster needs.

Up next is LSU linebacker Patrick Queen:

What he can do

– Has almost an intuitive sense locating the ball carrier; advanced instincts and ability to diagnose the play and close on the ball

– Fantastic play speed; can get sideline-to-sideline in a blink

– Comfortable in space; can carry running backs up the sideline; has requisite speed and athleticism to stay with tight ends

– Uses speed to work around or underneath blocks instead of fighting through them (to varying degrees of success)

– Commands the middle of the field despite being a one-year starter

– Plays like an angry hornet when kept clean upfront

– Demonstrates proper mix of speed, change-of-direction, and contact balance; can mirror mobile quarterbacks in a ‘spy’ role

– Solid tackler but can be overwhelmed once engaged with offensive linemen (particularly on the second level)

– Uses speed to maneuver through the trash on outside runs

– Easy, effortless mover in space; despite limited experience, looks capable as a coverage linebacker

– Can struggle to disengage from blocks

– Undersized (6-1, 227) for an off-ball linebacker

How he fits

If the Packers do in fact draft a linebacker with their first pick, it’s likely either going to be either Oklahoma’s Kenneth Murray or Patrick Queen. Both profile as Day 1 starters for the Packers who, to be frank, have no other good options currently on the roster. Mike Pettine’s propensity for playing one true linebacker would work well with Queen, who’s effective when defensive linemen are occupying the man across from them. The Packers base system is a 3-4, but they played loads of 5-2 and 6-1 fronts, with Blake Martinez as the solitary linebacker. Queen would add an instant athletic upgrade with the potential to be a plus defender against the pass.

Where Packers could get him

After Clemson “linebacker” Isaiah Simmons, there’s consensus that Queen and Murray are the next best off-ball linebackers, but the order is unclear. Depending on what teams like Ravens and Raiders do in free agency should dictate how the linebacker position falls down the board. There’s a chance Queen could be available at No. 30. His value may be lower or higher depending on the team, but only slightly, ranging anywhere from a mid-first to an early second-round pick.

Draft Wire sends Patrick Queen to Packers in post Super Bowl mock draft

Patrick Queen could be the regal prospect the Packers need to fix a royal problem at ILB.

Draft Wire’s first mock draft following the Super Bowl has the Green Bay Packers acquiring a regal prospect to fix a royal problem at inside linebacker.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire sent LSU linebacker Patrick Queen to the Packers at No. 30 overall in the first round.

Queen and Kenneth Murray, another early favorite for the Packers in the first round of national mock drafts, are among the best of the best at inside linebacker in the 2020 draft.

From Easterling: “This defense was much improved in 2019, but there’s still a huge need for a three-down difference-maker at the second level. Queen is athletic and physical, with all the physical and mental tools to make an immediate impact in Green Bay. After a stellar performance in the College Football Playoff, Queen was a surprise addition to this year’s list of underclassmen, and would be a strong pick here.”

The Packers are looking at a potential rebuild at inside linebacker, a problem area for years. Blake Martinez and B.J. Goodson both have expiring contracts, and Oren Burks hasn’t shown enough over two injury-plagued seasons to start his NFL career.

An athletic playmaker at linebacker looks like one of GM Brian Gutekunst’s biggest needs this offseason.

According to Pro Football Focus, Queen delivered nine “stops” during the College Football Playoff and was one of the best inside linebackers in coverage throughout the 2019 season.

As a junior, Queen produced 85 tackles, 12 tackles for losses, three sacks, one interception and two pass breakups over 15 games for the national champions. He took over at linebacker for 2019 first-round pick Devin White.

Another asset for Queen: speed. Gutekunst said speed is a requirement for playing the position in today’s NFL, and Queen has plenty of it.

Raiders take LSU LB Patrick Queen over Kenneth Murray in NFL.com mock

While we are still three months away from the 2019 NFL Draft, one thing seems fairly clear; the Raiders are likely taking a wide receiver at pick No. 12. With two elite prospects in CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy expected to go around that range, it seems unlikely the Raiders will leave the draft without one of those two superstars.

What may be more intriguing is what the team does with their second first-round pick at No. 19. The Raiders need to get younger and faster at linebacker and there are two linebacker prospects in that draft that could help fill that need; LSU’s Patrick Queen and Oklahoma’s Kenneth Murray.

Murray was insanely productive over the last two years at Oklahoma, tallying 257 tackles, 29.5 tackles for a loss and 8.5 sacks. He’s a rangy player who has the ability to run from sideline to sideline with ease. However, in Lance Zierlein’s first mock draft at NFL.com, he has the Raiders taking Queen over Murray.

While Murray may be the more polished player, Queen is probably the better athlete. There is a chance that he runs in the 4.4s at the NFL Combine and it’s rare to find players of his size and speed. Queen really came on at the end of the season for LSU as he tallied 16 tackles and four tackles for a loss in the team’s two playoff games. Queen might not be the better player right now, but it’s hard to ignore his potential upside as he is clearly an ascending talent.

Over the next three months, pay close attention to these two players to see if one can separate themselves from the other. It’s very likely that one of these two linebackers ends up wearing the Siver and Black in 2020.

Mel Kiper mock draft 1.0: Ravens take C.J. Mosley’s replacement

The Baltimore Ravens grab LSU linebacker Patrick Queen in the 2020 NFL draft to replace C.J. Mosley, according to Mel Kiper.

There are tons of draft analysts around, but none as famous as ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Well known for his player evaluations and mock drafts, Kiper is one of the few analysts around that draw attention every time he puts together a mock draft.

Now that we know which underclassmen are entering the 2020 NFL draft, team needs established and the NFL Scouting Combine quickly approaching, Kiper had enough information to put together his very first mock draft of the offseason.

At No. 28, Kiper has the Baltimore Ravens taking LSU linebacker Patrick Queen.

“Did the Ravens ever really replace C.J. Mosley? Not really, though that defense didn’t have many weaknesses for the last few months of the season. Journeyman Josh Bynes took the reins, but he’s a free agent, and general manager Eric DeCosta could upgrade with Queen, a fast, athletic, run-and-hit middle linebacker who is rising up boards because of his play down the stretch of LSU’s title run. He was tremendous in the two College Football Playoff games, picking up four tackles for loss and 16 total tackles. This is a great fit. Baltimore could also address another spot in the front seven.”

While not the biggest pressing need for Baltimore this offseason, they never really found a suitable long-term answer for C.J. Mosley’s departure. They hoped Patrick Onwuasor and Chris Board would team up to make up for the loss but wound up out of the starting lineup shortly into the 2019 season in favor of Josh Bynes and L.J. Fort — two players who hadn’t started a game last season prior to joining the Ravens in Week 5.

With Onwuasor and Bynes among Baltimore’s 21 pending free agents this offseason, there are no guarantees the Ravens will be able to even limp into the 2020 season with what they had last year, much less upgrade at the position. That makes the 2020 NFL draft the ideal location to find Mosley’s replacement and improve the play upfront in Baltimore’s defense.

NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is also high on Queen, ranking him as his second-best linebacker prospect. Well known for his sideline-to-sideline speed and range, Queen is exactly the type of player the Ravens need at the position. Baltimore’s defense has struggled against running backs and tight ends in coverage over the years, failing to match their speed in the passing game, often getting gouged for big yards in key situations. While Queen is also well noted for being a little undersized, most draft analysts praise his football intelligence for helping him get to the hole quickly to make big plays in the run game.

Queen looks like a prospect who could realistically start Week 1 for the Ravens and has a high enough ceiling to excel there. That’s all any team could ask for from their first-round pick.

4 LSU underclassmen declare for NFL draft

Check out who from the national champion LSU Tigers is entering the NFL draft.

The Arizona Cardinals are in full offseason mode, which means looking ahead to the NFL draft in April. With the college football season over, many underclassmen are declaring for the NFL draft. That includes the national champion LSU Tigers.

Four of their underclassmen have decided to skip their senior season and enter the NFL draft. None is a surprise.

One is safety Grant Delpit. He was one of the nation’s best defensive players and is considered by many as the best safety in the draft class. He will very likely be selected in the first round of the draft.

Linebacker Patrick Queen also declared. LSU has a long line of linebackers playing well in the NFL. He had a big game in the title game and seems to have stock rising.

Offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles is also entering the draft. He will likely be a Day w or Day 3 pick.

Another Tiger to skip his senior season is running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He had 1,414 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in 2019 and also caught 55 passes for 453 more yards and a touchdown, totaling 1,867 yards from scrimmage. He has quick feet and makes people miss. As one of the best running back prospects in the country, he is expected as of now to be a Day 2 pick.

The Louisiana State Tigers haven’t even had 72 hours to celebrate their 2019-2020 National Championship before the underclassmen began declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Now you can add offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles to the list of Tigers making the jump this offseason. Charles made the announcement via social media Wednesday.

Charles will join Justin Jefferson, Lloyd Cushenberry III, Grant Delpit, Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips, who have also declared. Looks like head coach Ed Oregeron will have his work cut out for him as he looks to re-tool his team following this run of declarations on top of the seniors who will also be leaving the program.

LSU LB Patrick Queen declares for 2020 NFL draft

LSU linebacker Patrick Queen is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft

One of the fastest-rising linebacker prospects in the nation is making the early jump from the college ranks to the pros.

LSU’s Patrick Queen is foregoing the rest of his eligibility and will declare for the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via social media Wednesday.

Coming off a stellar performance in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, this 6-1, 227-pound playmaker made the most of his first season as a full-time starter for the Bayou Bengals. The latest in a long line of blue-chip linebacker prospects to come out of Baton Rouge, Queen shouldn’t have to wait long to hear his name called on draft weekend.

Watch: Two underclassmen Tigers declare for NFL Draft after winning national title

Now, there are two underclassmen additions to the list of names that will be absent from the Tigers’ 2020 roster along with the projected first overall draft pick.

We know LSU’s (and college football’s) biggest star, senior Joe Burrow, won’t be back in Baton Rouge next season. Now, there are two underclassmen additions to the list of names that will be absent from the Tigers’ 2020 roster along with the projected first overall draft pick.

Safety Grant Delpit and linebacker Patrick Queen will both forego their senior seasons. Both athletes wrote letters to the LSU fan base, thanking them for their support, sharing those as their official announcement on their personal Instagram pages.

Delpit dealt with injuries throughout 2019 but the three-year starter still finishes his career with 199 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 24 passes defended, eight interceptions and seven sacks. DraftWire projects he’s a Top 20 pick.

Queen made his presence known in emerging as a starter this season. The linebacker logged 85 tackles during the 2019 season, with 12 for a loss. In his final collegiate season, he made one interception, one fumble recovery, and three sacks.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 20.
