Pat Surtain looked like Champ Bailey on his pick-six

We knew that play looked familiar!

In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Pat Surtain intercepted a Justin Herbert pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown, sealing a win.

Surtain’s interception and his return brought back memories of Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey, who had a very a similar 70-yard pick-six against the San Francisco 49ers in 2006. It’s amazing how much these two plays are alike:

If Surtain continues playing like he did on Sunday, the comparisons to Bailey will continue, and Champ doesn’t seem to mind.

“People are like, ‘Oh, he reminds me of Champ!’ I’m like, ‘Hell, he reminds me of me, too,'” Bailey said during an interview with the team’s official website earlier this year.

Surtain’s speed reached 22.07 miles per hour on his return, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

“I had no idea [he was that fast],” safety Justin Simmons said after the game. “Are you sure that’s right? NextGen stats, they have all the good stuff apparently. I didn’t know that — that’s crazy. That’s a crazy stat. Sheesh, that’s fast.”

Surtain had a simple explanation for that speed.

“I used to run track,” he said, “so that track background helped me a lot.”

7 takeaways from Broncos’ 28-13 win over Chargers

The Broncos played a great game against the Chargers on Sunday! Here are seven takeaways from the win.

The Denver Broncos upset the Los Angeles Chargers 28-13 at home in Week 12, improving to 6-5 with the win. Here are seven quick takeaways from Denver’s important AFC West victory.

Pro Bowl voting is now open; do Broncos have any worthy players?

Do you think any Broncos players deserve a Pro Bowl nod this season?

Fan voting for the 2022 NFL Pro Bowl is now open and will run through Thursday, December 16 on Twitter and NFL.com. Players and coaches will make up the other two-thirds of voting results.

The All-Star game will not be divided by conference this season, so Denver Broncos players will be competing with AFC and NFC players for votes. Given how poorly the team’s season has gone, the Broncos probably won’t be well-represented at the Pro Bowl in February.

Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon have both played well for Denver this year, but they split carries, which hurts their numbers compared to other productive running backs on the ballot.

Jerry Jeudy is an All-Star talent, but injuries and a struggling offense have prevented him from posting Pro Bowl-worthy numbers this season. Fellow wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick don’t rank high in receiving categories, either.

None of the team’s edge rushers have posted big numbers following Von Miller’s departure, and Shelby Harris will be overshadowed by defensive lineman who have totaled more than his 2.5 sacks.

Pat Surtain has played well at cornerback, but probably not well enough to earn a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie. Safety Justin Simmons might have the best shot among Broncos players to reach the All-Star game thanks to his four interceptions.

Denver kicker Brandon McManus should also have a decent shot, but there are more popular kickers who will likely draw the fan votes.

The 2022 Pro Bowl will be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. MT on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ABC.

Broncos inactives: View which players won’t play vs. Eagles

Bad news: Broncos are without both starting offensive tackles, their backup QB and their offensive coordinator against Eagles. Good news: CB Pat Surtain will play!

The Denver Broncos have announced that left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle), right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle), running back Mike Boone (ribs), defensive lineman McTevin Agim (knee), defensive back Essang Bassey, cornerback Mac MccCain and safety Jamar Johnson are inactive for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) has been cleared to play.

Denver’s backup quarterback, Drew Lock, and offensive lineman Austin Schlottmann are also unavailable this week. Lock and Schlottmann are not on the inactive list because they do not count against the active roster while on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but they won’t play.

Brett Rypien will serve as the team’s backup QB behind Teddy Bridgewater this week. Calvin Anderson is expected to start at left tackle with Bolles sidelined and Cam Fleming will likely start at right tackle in the place of Massie.

The Broncos will also be without offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who is in COVID-19 protocol. Quarterbacks coach Mike Shula will call the team’s offensive plays against the Eagles with Shurmur unavailable.

Denver is considered a 2.5-point favorite against Philadelphia. Sunday’s game, scheduled to begin at 2:25 p.m. MT, will be broadcast regionally on select Fox channels (view the TV broadcast map here).

Broncos injury report: Pat Surtain did not practice Wednesday

Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) was among nine Denver players who did not practice Wednesday.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) did not practice Wednesday. Before practice, coach Vic Fanigo indicated that he is hopeful Surtain will be able to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Fangio also said left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) seems to have a less than 50% chance of playing in Week 10. Calvin Anderson filled in for Bolles against the Dallas Cowboys last week and played well.

Broncos injuries: Good news for Pat Surtain, bad news for Graham Glasgow

Broncos will be without guard Graham Glasgow (ankle) and right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle) for a bit.

Denver Broncos right guard Graham Glasgow suffered a fractured ankle during Sunday’s 30-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys, coach Vic Fangio confirmed Monday. The 29-year-old veteran will now go on injured reserve and he will have an uncertain status for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Quinn Meinerz stepped in for Glasgow on Sunday and the rookie played well. Netane Muti is also expected to return from the Reserve/COVID-19 list this week, so the Broncos have two capable potential replacements for Glasgow.

Meanwhile, right tackle Bobby Massie is set to miss a “game or two” after suffering an ankle injury, Fangio said. Calvin Anderson, the team’s backup swing tackle, started in the place of an injured left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) in Week 9. If Bolles is able to return this week, Anderson will presumably start in the place of Massie on the right side.

Fangio said cornerback Pat Surtain (knee) and defensive lineman McTelvin Agim (knee) are still undergoing testing, but KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis broke some news on Surtain before Monday’s press conference.

Surtain suffered a knee sprain, which is “very good news overall,” according to Klis. Surtain might be in danger of missing some time, but it sounds like his injury is not very serious, or at least not as serious as it could have been.

We’ll know more about the status of Denver’s injuries when the Broncos return to the practice field and release an injury report on Wednesday.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain ‘expected to be OK’

NFL Network reports Broncos CB Pat Surtain (chest) is ‘expected to be OK.’ Vic Fangio said Surtain will be day to day.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain is “expected to be OK” after suffering a chest injury in Week 4, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Monday that Surtain will be “day to day” this week.

After suffering the injury, Surtain (6-2, 202 pounds) was ruled out in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 23-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Before leaving the game, Surtain played 63 snaps on defense, totaling six tackles.

Surtain has totaled 15 tackles, two pass breakups and one interception in four games this season.

Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (concussion) and receiver/returner Diontae Spencer (chest) were also injured against Baltimore. Bridgewater is now in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Spencer is also “day to day,” according to Fangio.

In addition to Surtain and Spencer avoiding serious injuries, there is more good news on the injury front for Denver this week — running back Mike Boone (quad) and cornerback Ronald Darby (hamstring) are both eligible to be activated from injured reserve to the 53-man roster, and guard Dalton Risner (ankle) should be able to return for Week 5.
