Sean Payton says former Saints RB Latavius Murray was recruiting him to Broncos in-season

Sean Payton says former Saints RB Latavius Murray was recruiting him to the Broncos before they even fired Nathaniel Hackett:

Sean Payton hasn’t been shy about his admiration for Latavius Murray. He called the former New Orleans Saints running back one of his favorite players during his introductory press conference as head coach of the Denver Broncos, and expressed his hope that Murray would be re-signed as one of his new team’s many pending free agents.

During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show from Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LVII, Payton plucked Murray from the crowd as he happened to walk nearby and share an interesting anecdote about Murray’s role in getting him to Denver.

“And he texted me right at Christmastime, the 23rd of December. he sent this text: ‘Hey my backfield teammate and I, we hope you come to Denver.’ And I’m thinking, what backfield teammate?” Payton shrugged. “I’m looking up who the other running back is, I’m like ‘Who are you talking about?’ And he sent ‘No. 3.’ So I’m like, we’re in the middle of the season here, I text him back: ‘Be careful what you’re asking Santa Claus for.'”

Let’s check the calendar on that — Payton says Murray texted him on Dec. 23, which he didn’t refute while sitting next to McAfee on the live set. That’s two days before the Broncos got shellacked 51-14 by the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 25, and Denver sacked first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett a day later on Dec. 26. So Murray and his No. 3-wearing teammate Russell Wilson were stumping for Payton when Hackett was still down the hall writing his opening script for the Rams game.

Yikes. But that goes to show how dire things had gotten in Denver, and the kind of mess Payton walked into. Now he’s got to clean it up. It’s clear that he sees players like Murray as a part of the solution, and the irony that Murray joining the Broncos in the first place was received poorly (at best) by Saints fans shouldn’t go unnoticed. New Orleans tried to keep him after he came off the bench to run for 57 yards and punch in a touchdown against his old Minnesota Vikings team in last year’s London game, but he rightfully saw a better opportunity in Denver. If he and Payton get their way, he’ll be back with a big role in mind for 2023.

Damar Hamlin’s status after suffering cardiac arrest on Monday improved so much that he was able to surprise his team on Friday.

Hamlin got on a video call with the Bills locker room. He couldn’t talk much just yet, but he did get the words “love you guys” out.

We all can imagine how amazing that much have felt to his teammates–And the Pat McAfee Show did just that.

McAfee and co-host AJ Hawk both played in the NFL. Upon hearing the update that Hamlin did just that, they envisioned what it must have been like for the Bills.

“What a pop,” McAfee said. “That room? Oh my god. Everyone is jumping there, I assume.”

Bills’ Von Miller has interesting plans ahead while rehabbing

#Bills’ Von Miller has interesting plans ahead while rehabbing:

A lot of times when a player such as Von Miller has an injury that ends their season, they end up taking on a new role within the team.

In most cases, they go from player to defacto “coach.” That’s what safety Micah Hyde did.

However, Miller has different ideas.

Yes, Miller will be with the Bills’ young core of pass rushers such as Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham. In addition, Miller wants to shadow another person in the organization: Brandon Beane.

Miller has not been shy about his desires to one day be a general manager in the NFL. He’s very serious about it and said he will be working alongside the Bills GM during some his recovery period.

Miller revealed that during an interview on the Pat McAfee Show. Check out that clip below:

Aaron Rodgers Tuesday recap: Thumb is a ‘little banged up’ after hit on final play vs. Giants

Recapping Aaron Rodgers’ weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” following the Packers’ lost to the Giants.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers addressed the team’s loss to the New York Giants and looked ahead to Sunday’s game against the New York Jets while speaking with the “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday.

Here’s a recap of Rodgers’ appearance on the weekly show:

— Rodgers said he loved the entire London experience. He thought at least 70 percent of the crowd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were Packers fans. “Overall, really fun trip.”

— On the second half troubles on offense: Part of it was not having the ball. Didn’t start a second possession until into the fourth quarter. Also complimented  Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. “I have a ton of respect for Wink…they are aggressive, they come after you…they threw a lot at us.”

— Rodgers called Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence a “premier player.” The Packers interior offensive line said he’s one of the best defenders they’ve faced this year.

— Rodgers said he wasn’t taking a shot at Jaire Alexander following the loss to the Giants. He said it’s his job as a “mouthpiece” for the team to create positive narratives in the locker room and refocus the team for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

— Rodgers said that “maybe” A.J. Dillon would have scored on the fourth down play. He said running against that look isn’t usually the right play. “Empty pressure, you’re not really thinking of handing it off.”

— Rodgers said he thinks his Hail Mary on the final play likely would have gotten to the end zone. He got hit instead. Said he needed to buy more time to let the receivers get to the end zone.

— Rodgers said he got “rocked” on the final play. His thumb is a “little banged up” but he doesn’t think the injury will affect his throwing this week.

— Rodgers said he wanted to run a very specific play on the third down play on the final drive. Said the Giants played the look well but he also believed it could have been a touchdown to Randall Cobb had the throw gotten through the line.

— On Cobb: “I felt like he was trending in this direction getting more opportunities.” Said he made the most of his chances against the Giants. Not expecting 13 targets. “I have a lot of trust in him, always have.” Said he looks healthy.

— Said the touchdown pass to Marcedes Lewis was an old play designed by Nathaniel Hackett. “Definitely wanted to get him a touch.” Said Lewis is one of the offense’s top 11 players. “Dominates” in the run game. Hopes he can get more looks in the red zone.

— Rodger said he wants more opportunities for Allen Lazard.

— Rodgers on embracing expectations: “When we come up short, we’re going to be accountable, but we’re not going to panic.”

— Rodgers said he isn’t a fan of reviewing roughing the passer penalties. Didn’t work with pass interference. Admitted it’s “tough to play defense” given the new penalties and policing of the quarterback position.

Pat McAfee Show to Jordan Poyer: ‘You’re an animal, dude’ (video)

Pat McAfee Show to Jordan Poyer: ‘You’re an animal, dude’ (video):

Bills safety Jordan Poyer joined the Pat McAfee Show early this week on the heels of his huge effort against the Ravens.

Poyer was fresh off two interceptions, and the host, Pat McAfee, candidly let the defensive back know how he feels.

“You’re a f—— animal dude,” McAfee made sure to say with emphasis.

Von Miller explains why #BillsMafia is different than other fan bases (video):

It didn’t take Von Miller long to find out that Bills Mafia is one of a kind.

Miller joined the Pat McAfee Show and expressed his early feelings about his new fan base. He already went on the record to say he appreciated their toilet paper donations during training camp–but Miller took it a step further during this latest interview.

“These guys–They live and breathe football,” Miller said.

Pat McAfee on Matt Araiza’s 82-yard punt: ‘That ball was murdered’ (video)

McAfee noted the #Bills punter twice this week:

Drawn up almost exactly how the Buffalo Bills would want, sixth-round rookie punter Matt Araiza caught headlines both in and out of western New York after his NFL debut.

Playing in the first preseason contest of his pro career, Araiza booted an 82-yard bomb on a punt.

Among those clamoring was the Pat McAfee Show.

McAfee, a former punter for the Indianapolis Colts, was actually a bit mad. He did not like how onlookers were making a bit of an excuse for why Araiza’s ball went so far.

Make no mistake, McAfee was not doing that during a clip from his show this week. McAfee, who already took to his social media account on Twitter to praise Araiza, used words like “murdered” and “slaughtered” to describe how the rookie connected with the ball.

For the full NSFW McAfee clip on Araiza, see the video below:

Seahawks ‘have never really been that interested’ in Baker Mayfield

Rapoport appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and had this to say.

The speculation regarding Baker Mayfield’s next NFL destination is still going strong, and the Seattle Seahawks have been floated as a popular choice ever since the organization traded their longtime franchise quarterback Russell Wilson.

However, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reaffirmed Seattle’s rumored lack of interest in the disgruntled Browns signal-caller and stated that they are moving forward with the competition between Drew Lock and Geno Smith.

Rapoport appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and had this to say…

In all likelihood, the Seahawks will play out the season with Lock and Smith and draft a quarterback in 2023 if things do not go well. They are certainly not projected to be a contender in the NFC West this year, let alone a Super Bowl despite head coach Pete Carroll’s belief in Lock and Smith.

Seahawks fans will likely be in for a long season in 2022.

Charles Barkley on PGA Tour players taking LIV Golf money: ‘If somebody gave me $200 million I’d kill a relative’

Tell us how you really feel, Chuck.

Charles Barkley isn’t afraid to speak his mind. It’s one of the many reasons that after a Hall of Fame basketball career he’s one of the most popular sports analysts in the business.

During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on Friday, the 11-time All-Star and current analyst for TNT dished on the LIV Golf and PGA Tour controversy and supported players who took the money to join the Greg Norman led series that is funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

“I want all the LIV guys on top of the leaderboard,” Barkley said of what he wants to see at this week’s U.S. Open. “I want to see the PGA Tour shaking in their damn boots. Listen, I’m not a religious dude but I want chaos this weekend at the U.S. Open.”

“I don’t judge other people. Listen, if somebody gave me $200 million I’d kill a relative,” Barkley joked before doubling down. “I’m serious. They’re saying Phil Mickelson got $200 million, Dustin Johnson got $150 million, for $150 million I’d kill a relative, even one I like.”

Unfortunately for Barkley, the players who joined the LIV series have largely struggled at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, outside of Dustin Johnson and a few others. Barkley’s good friend Mickelson shot 78-73 to finish 11 over after 36 holes.
