Panthers Highlights: Sam Darnold hooks up with Omar Bayless on long ball

Watch Darnold hook up with wide receiver Omar Bayless on a long ball with rookie corner Jaycee Horn in coverage.

There’s something to be said for managing the game and taking what the defense gives you. It’s tough to compete in the NFL without a quality deep ball, though. The Panthers should be getting an upgrade in this department with Sam Darnold compared to Teddy Bridgewater.

Panthers sign big target at wide receiver after training camp tryout

The Panthers worked out a couple of wide receivers at the end of today’s training camp practice.

The Panthers worked out a couple of wide receivers at the end of today’s training camp practice. One of them will be joining the squad.

According to the team website, Carolina has signed wide receiver Krishawn Hogan.

Hogan (6-foot-3, 217 pounds) has bounced around a bit in the NFL, spending time with four other teams so far. He hasn’t seen much of the field, though – catching just one pass for four yards total.

The Panthers didn’t have any traditional red zone type receivers on their roster last year, which was one of many reasons why they struggled inside the 20.

To win a permanent roster spot, Hogan will have to beat out guys like Omar Bayless and Keith Kirkwood, who are the other big-bodied pass catchers in the mix.

Panthers announce 3 more roster moves before first training camp practice

Rookie defensive tackle Phil Hoskins is also being placed on the active/PUP list due to a foot injury.

The Carolina Panthers will be starting their first training camp practice of 2021 in about half an hour. Before they begin, there’s a couple more housekeeping notes.

Yesterday, the team placed outside linebacker Frankie Luvu on the reserve/COVID-19 list and safety Lano Hill on active/PUP. Today, two more players are going on the COVID list: Hill as well as tight end Stephen Sullivan.

Sam Darnold, Christian McCaffrey decline comment on their vaccination status

The two most important players on offense this coming season will be new starting quarterback Sam Darnold and star running back Christian McCaffrey.

Panthers players are checking in for training camp in Spartanburg, today. Some of the more-prominent members of the roster have been speaking with the media.

The two most important players on offense this coming season will be new starting quarterback Sam Darnold and star running back Christian McCaffrey. The pair struck a bond over the offseason, celebrating their birthdays together and dining out in Charlotte hotspots. One thing they seem to have in common is their stance on vaccination disclosure. Both declined to comment on their status today while speaking with reporters unmasked.

We don’t know about specific players, but Carolina has one of the league’s highest-vaccination rates. They may not want to admit it in public, but it’s tough to believe they wouldn’t get the shot given how critical they are for this team and the many restrictions facing players who refuse to be vaccinated.

Players can also get fined $14,650 for COVID violations this year. Additionally, teams that are forced to cancel games due to outbreaks will forfeit and be subject to further discipline.

Panthers LB Denzel Perryman says he got a speeding ticket driving to training camp

Perryman may have been a bit excited to get to work.

The Panthers added several veterans to their front-seven during free agency. While he didn’t get as much attention as Haason Reddick, Denzel Perryman might turn out to be the most crucial one. Projected as the new starting middle linebacker, he’ll be taking over a critical role for Carolina’s defense.

Perryman may have been a bit excited to get to work. He says he got a ticket for speeding on his way to Wofford for training camp this morning. Perryman says he was going 91 mph and the fine is for $350.

Perryman signed a two-year, $6 million deal with Carolina, but he still jokingly asked the recently-paid Taylor Moton for a bit of help.

During his time with the Chargers, Perryman played well but he had issues staying on the field. He’s missed 37 games in six seasons due to injuries. However, if he can stay healthy he should be an important piece defensively.

Panthers OL Cameron Erving expects to be front-runner at left tackle

Other candidates on the roster who might challenge him for that starting role include Trent Scott and Greg Little.

The Carolina Panthers have had issues finding a long-term starter at left tackle ever since Jordan Gross retired in 2014. Last season, it was Russell Okung’s injuries that derailed the train, adding to a long string of failures on the blind side.

This year, we don’t even have a good idea of who the starter is going to be. Ask Cameron Erving and he’ll tell you he expects to be the front-runner once training camp begins, which is what he told the media on Tuesday.

Erving has played every position along the offensive line during his career, and his 75 games of experience should be helpful at least on some level. For what it’s worth, Erving feels most comfortable at left tackle.

That said, starting him at the most important position in the trenches could go bad quick. When he was first signed by the Panthers back in March, Pro Football Focus noted that Erving was their lowest-graded offensive lineman in the NFL over the last three seasons.

Other candidates on the roster who might challenge him for that starting role include Trent Scott and Greg Little.

Okung is starting to look pretty good, though.
