Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Beavers miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

The Beavers catch the good break of getting Colorado at home, but missing Arizona isn’t a plus. They also miss UCLA, but they have to on the road to play defending Pac-12 champion Utah along with Arizona State. The conference campaign kicks off against USC.

Against the North, the road trip to Stanford is rough coming off the date at Utah, but getting Washington State and Oregon at home helps. In the conference, four of the last six games are in Corvallis.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: Win the Mountain West and things should be okay

The Beavers might not play a Power Five program in non-conference action, but outside of Montana State there isn’t a true break.

Boise State and Fresno State are going to be dangerous enough to be in contention for the Mountain West title, and they’re both going to be tough outs – especially going on the road to face the Bulldogs.

Oregon State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a bit tougher than it might seem.

The bar is set higher now in the Jonathan Smith era, but it’s still going to be a fight to go bowling if the Beavers can’t sweep through the first three games against the non-conference slate.

USC, at Utah, at Stanford – that’s a rough way to start the Pac-12 season. The bulk of the wins have to come before November – Oregon State will likely be the underdog in three of the last four games.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Ducks miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

There’s no complaining about the Pac-12 schedule with one of the road trips at Arizona, another at Colorado, and with defending conference champion Utah and UCLA having to come to Eugene – and the date with the Bruins coming off a week off. That means they’re missing Arizona State and USC – that’s not a bad deal.

From the North, the road games are at Cal, Oregon State, and Washington State. Again, there’s no complaint there – Washington is a home game – but there are five conference road games.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Dan Lanning, welcome to Oregon

You’ll have to forgive the new coaching staff for being a wee bit grouchy about what it’s walking into with the non-conference schedule.

Lanning gets to go against the Georgia program he’s coming from, Eastern Washington’s offense is always a pain, and dealing with BYU isn’t going to be a layup. That’s all before diving into Pac-12 play.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The non-conference slate isn’t easy, but the top Pac-12 games are at home. The second half of the season is sneaky-tough, but that October 15th week off is perfectly timed and the team doesn’t have to leave the state of Oregon after November 5th.

It’s tough enough to all but forget about a trip to the College Football Playoff, but missing USC and Utah is everything in the battle to get back to the Pac-12 Championship.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Bears miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

The Bears can’t complain too much about who they miss from the Pac-12 South. The have to go to USC and close out the regular season against UCLA, but they also catch the monster break of playing both Arizona and Colorado.

If you’re going to miss two teams in the Pac-12, Utah and Arizona State aren’t bad to skip.

The breaks are even bigger in the North with Oregon and Washington having to come to Berkeley.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: There’s a shot for a massive start

The road game at Notre Dame is a problem, but that and the manageable trip to Washington State are the only games against teams that went bowling last year in the first seven games.

It’s the wrong way to put it considering USC is a part of this, but there are just five games against teams that were bowl eligible, and none of them – other than Notre Dame – are an almost certain loss.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad.

Cal always seems to get hit with rough schedules against top teams that make it almost impossible to get to six wins without a lot of luck. That’s not the case this time around.

With this schedule, there’s no excuse not to have at least four wins banked before November, and it could and should be even more.

The Golden Bears (5-4) are still in the hunt to become bowl eligible and will do so with a win. Cal defeated USC at the Coliseum last season, 15-14, snapping a 13-year losing streak to the Trojans.

Clay Helton’s job security continues to be a hot topic in Southern California and throughout the country with a new athletic director at USC. The team helped Helton’s cause last weekend when USC survived a late comeback attempt by Arizona State to escape with a 31-26 victory. The first quarter saw a dominant performance by the USC passing attack, which scored 28 points. Quarterback Kedon Slovis was 15-for-17 for 297 yards and four touchdowns in one-quarter of play. However, the team scored just three points in the next three quarters. On defense, the Trojans got an added boost with the return of safety Talanoa Hufanga and defensive end Drake Jackson. They were apart of a defense that held ASU running back Eno Benjamin to 50 yards on 20 carries.

The Golden Bears are coming off a 33-20 victory over Washington State. The win snapped a four-game losing streak. That streak was especially surprising considering they started the season 4-0 and ranked in the Top 25. After suffering a shoulder injury that knocked him out for the middle portion of this season, Golden Bears quarterback Chase Garbers has been cleared to play. Backup quarterback Devon Modster went 16-for-24 for 230 yards and three touchdowns vs. Washington State. Running back Christopher Brown also had 95 yards rushing on 19 carries.
