Texans to terminate qualifying offer to DT P.J. Hall to sign Jaleel Johnson

The Houston Texans have terminated their qualifying offer to DT P.J. Hall in order to sign former Minnesota Vikings DT Jaleel Johnson.

Sam Houston State product P.J. Hall won’t be returning to the Houston Texans after all.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have withdrawn their qualifying offer to Hall, who played defensive tackle for Houston in 2020. The two parties had agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.1 million in March for Hall to rejoin the Texans ahead of the 2021 season.

After a two-year stint with the then-Oakland Raiders, Hall signed with the Texans last August. He became one of Houston’s most dependable defensive lineman, as he recorded 34 total tackles and a sack before a torn pectoral injury ended his 2020 season prematurely.

Hall, the Texas native from Seguin who spent his college career at Sam Houston State, was a second-round draft pick in 2018 by the Raiders. In three seasons in the league, Hall has appeared in 40 career games where he recorded 82 tackles (52 solo hits), 2.5 sacks and nine quarterback hits.

Instead, the Texans have added former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson after a free agent visit. Johnson started all 165 games at right defensive tackle for the Vikings in 2020, producing 44 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

Texans place original-round tender on DT P.J. Hall

The Houston Texans have placed the original-round tender on former Oakland Raiders 2018 second-round defensive tackle P.J. Hall.

The Houston Texans are willing to give P.J. Hall another year with the team even amid the new regime.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have placed an original-round tender on the defensive tackle, who will turn 26 on April 5. The Oakland Raiders drafted Hall in Round 2 of the 2018 NFL draft from Sam Houston State.

Hall’s tender is $2.133 million.

The 6-0, 305-pound defensive tackle was one of the few bright spots for the Texans during their 4-12 campaign in 2020. Hall provided 34 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits in 10 games, nine of which he started.

Hall, who went to high school at Seguin High School, about 40 miles outside of San Antonio, was renewed when he came to the Texans due to Houston’s proximity to his family.

“It’s definitely more comfortable,” Hall told reporters on Oct. 16, 2020. “It feels great knowing that like my family’s here. I’m from Seguin, so it’s two and a half hours down the road. It just feels like I’m back at home, like this is fresh air, like a fresh start. Everything’s going perfect.”

Hall gets another fresh start with the Texans, who are switching to a Tampa-2 scheme with a 4-3 front under new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.

3 restricted free agents the Texans are expected to re-sign

The Houston Texans have key decisions to make with free agents, but are expected to retain these three restricted free agents.

The Houston Texans are evaluating the free agents on their own roster before they begin looking to the free agent market to bolster their team.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, here are three restricted free agents who the Texans intend to re-sign.

Texans place WR Randall Cobb, DT P.J. Hall on injured reserve among other roster moves

The Houston Texans placed receiver Randall Cobb and defensive tackle P.J. Hall on injured reserve along with other roster moves in Week 12.

The Houston Texans made a slew of roster moves ahead of their Week 12 Thanksgiving Day showdown with the Detroit Lions at 11:30 a.m. CT at Ford Field.

Houston moved receiver Randall Cobb (toe) and defensive tackle P.J. Hall (shoulder/knee) to injured reserve. The two players will be eligible to come back in Week 15 at the Indianapolis Colts.

The Texans also signed undrafted free agent running back Scottie Phillips from the practice squad and moved him onto the active roster.

Houston’s two standard elevations from the practice squad to the game day roster are defensive tackle Corey Liuget and receiver Steven Mitchell.

The Texans also signed defensive tackle Andrew Brown off the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad and placed him on the exempt/commissioner permission list.

Texans Week 12 injury designations: Randall Cobb, Kenny Stills ruled OUT

The Detroit Lions (4-6) Week 12 opponent, the Houston Texans (3-7), have released their injury designations ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game.

The Detroit Lions (4-6) Week 12 opponent, the Houston Texans (3-7), have released their injury designations ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game.

Here’s a look at the Texans’ full injury designations list.

Injury status

Player Position Injury Designation
Josh McCown QB Illness OUT
Cullen Gillaspia FB Back OUT
Randall Cobb WR (starter) Toe Placed on IR
Kenny Stills WR Quad OUT
P.J. Hall DT (starter) Knee/Shoulder OUT
Laremy Tunsil LT (starter) Illness No Designation
Senio Kelemete LG Concussion No Designation
Bryan Anger P (starter) Quad Questionable

Cobb has made a career of beating up on the Lions and Stills’ speed would have surely given the Lions issues, so Detroit catches a break with the two of them missing this game. Unfortunately, the Texans still feature solid wide receiver options, including starters Brandon Cooks and Will Fuller, as well as Keke Coutee, who will likely take over Cobb’s spot.

Tunsil missed last week’s game and Roderick Johnson filled in admirably for him. Tunsil looks ready to go with no injury designation, but if for some reason his illness pops back up again, they have a capable replacement at the ready.

Anger punted through a Quad injury last week and he is expected to play.

DT P.J. Hall among 5 Texans ruled out for the Lions

Houston Texans defensive tackle P.J. Hall will not make the trip to Detroit to take on the Lions on Thanksgiving at Ford Field.

The Houston Texans announced five players will not be traveling with the team as they play the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving at 11:30 a.m. CT at Ford Field.

Defensive tackle P.J. Hall (knee/shoulder), receiver Randall Cobb (toe), fullback Cullen Gillaspia (back), quarterback Josh McCown (illness), and receiver Kenny Stills (quadricep) will not make the trip to Detroit.

Left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who missed last Sunday’s 27-20 win over the New England Patriots with an illness, was not ruled out for Thursday’s game with the Lions. Tunsil was still on the Texans’ injury report with the illness, and was declared a non-participant on Monday, if they had a practice. Similarly, if Houston had practiced on Tuesday, the team said he would have been a full participant.

The former Sam Houston State product sustained the injury in the third quarter as the Texans led the Patriots 21-10.

If Hall is unable to return to the game, he would finish with two combined tackles on the afternoon.

The Texans have DE Carlos Watkins, who can kick inside, and rookie DT Ross Blacklock to fill in for Hall. DE J.J. Watt also has position flex to play inside to help out the interior defensive line.

The Houston Texans have made a late addition to their injury report for Sunday’s Week 7 tilt with the Green Bay Packers.

The team announced Saturday that defensive tackle P.J. Hall has been listed as questionable with an illness. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the illness is not COVID-19.

Hall has played in six games for the Texans, starting in five of them, and has collected 28 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and two quarterback hits. The former Sam Houston State product has been a welcomed, productive addition for an interior defensive line struggling to find its identity in 2020.

“We were obviously fortunate to get P.J. when we did,” defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said of the former Oakland Raiders 2018 second-round pick. “I don’t know what happened in Oakland but since he’s been here, he’s lost weight, he’s learned the scheme, he’s embraced the technique we’ve tried to teach and he’s obviously had the success we’ve had.”

The Texans may have to find another solution at defensive tackle as Hall is questionable.

DT P.J. Hall enjoying the ‘fresh air’ of playing for the Texans

Former Sam Houston State and Seguin High School product P.J. Hall is enjoying the “fresh air” that comes with playing for the Houston Texans.

P.J. Hall is enjoying a reboot just three seasons into his NFL career.

The Oakland Raiders selected the former Sam Houston State product in Round 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Raiders attempted to trade the 6-0, 305-pound defensive tackle to the Minnesota Vikings in August, but a failed physical nixed the deal, leaving the Raiders with no other choice than to waive him.

Hall played 35 games for Oakland, starting in 22 of them, and collected 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two pass deflections. However, it wasn’t good enough to make the move with the club to Las Vegas.

Houston claimed the former Seguin High School alumnus off waivers to bolster their defensive line. Through five games with his new team, Hall has enjoyed the new start with the AFC South club.

“It’s definitely more comfortable,” Hall said. “It feels great knowing that like my family’s here. I’m from Seguin, so it’s two and a half hours down the road. It just feels like I’m back at home, like this is fresh air, like a fresh start.”

Hall doesn’t begrudge his two seasons with the Raiders, but rather chooses to look at the positives, such as how the organization helped him acclimate to the pro game.

“I think things didn’t click when they needed to,” Hall said. “I feel like stuff happened over there and I think I couldn’t control it. So, once I got here everything started rolling just in time. I feel like it’s going good. Making sure that I stay focused and stay on track right now.”

When Hall got to Houston, he cleaned up his diet and chipped away at other aspects that could affect his focus.

“I feel like that’s why I’m playing better,” Hall said. “I feel more comfortable out there. I have great leadership out here, too. I feel like all those things are tying in.”

Hall has provided Houston with 21 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.0 sack in five games, four of which he started. The Texans are far from perfect at 1-4, but if Hall can continue to give the Texans a presence on the defensive line’s interior to shore up the run defense, the 2020 season may start to become as perfect as it can be.
