New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (17-24-7) visit the Ottawa Senators (17-23-8) for a 7:30 p.m. ET tilt at Canadian Tire Centre in Canada’s capital city. We analyze the Devils-Senators odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Devils at Senators: Projected starting goalies

MacKenzie Blackwood vs. Marcus Hogberg

Blackwood has started 31 games for the Devils, and he’s recorded a 2.96 goals against average and .905 save percentage. The 23-year-old has been solid away from home, posting a .914 SV% on the road.

Hogberg has gotten more time than veteran Craig Anderson of late. He’s likely to get the nod in this contest between two Eastern Conference foes coming off all-star week. In 11 games this season, the 25-year-old netminder owns a 2.91 GAA and .907 SV%. He was sharp going into the Sens’ bye week, posting a 2.17 GAA and .928 SV over his last four starts.

Prediction

New Jersey 3, Ottawa 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Sens went into the break 1-5-4 over their previous 10 games, and most of those were at home. The Devils were 2-5-1 over eight games immediately preceding the bye week. That stretch followed a nice 6-2-1 run for New Jersey, and the better stretch came against a more difficult run of opponents.

Road teams have fared quite well the first game back after this break the last couple of years. Take the DEVILS (+110).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

New Jersey (+1.5, -238) is 10-15 against the puck line on the road. At home, Ottawa (-1.5, +190) is 15-9 against the number. The Senators yield 2.92 goals per game at home as opposed to 3.79 on the road.

With no value here, AVOID the puck line in favor of the moneyline wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both the Devils and Senators lean slightly toward the Over in their season results. They went into the break ranked 30th and 31st, respectively, in goals allowed. Like Blackwood, Hogberg is a potential play candidate based on some expected regression in a low save percentage on the penalty kill. Underlying numbers for both New Jersey and Ottawa show some expected gains and mainly in the area of preventing goals.

Get in on some UNDER 5.5 (+125) action and hold back more for a possible jump to +130.

Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (16-22-5) visit the Detroit Red Wings (11-30-3) Friday in a key battle for top spot in the 2020 NHL draft lottery. The game at Little Caesars Arena is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Senators-Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Marcus Hogberg vs. Jimmy Howard

Hogberg is coming off a relief appearance against the Washington Capitals Tuesday, in which he stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal. He was 1-1-2 over his previous four starts and 1-2-2 on the season. He has a .894 save percentage and 3.42 goals against average.

Howard enters the day on a personal 10-game losing skid (0-9-1) and is just 2-14-1 for the season. The 35-year-old has a .884 SV% and 4.04 GAA.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Senators 6, Red Wings 4

Moneyline (ML)

Take the value on the SENATORS (-106) as the team with the better record in a coin-flip game between the bottom two seeds in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa has lost five straight games, including the 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Caps Tuesday, and they’re 5-15-3 away from home for the year. The Red Wings (-115) are just 7-14-1 at home and 2-8 across their last 10 games, though they beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 Tuesday for a rare two points.

The Sens rank 29th in the NHL with a minus-31 goal differential, but the 31st-ranked Wings are minus-72 in that department. If the Sens are going to buck their losing skid, this is the time.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

We’re going to go with an alternate line and back the SENATORS (-1.5, +240) to win by at least 2 goals. Hogberg is auditioning for a role with the Sens beyond this season, while Howard is seemingly playing out his contract on a bad team.

The Senators are 23-20 against the spread overall and 11-12 on the road. The Wings are 18-26 ATS overall and 8-14 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Friday’s top play (maybe on the entire sports betting slate) is OVER 6.5 (+115). Neither of these goaltenders can be trusted to stop much, and the Sens are 9-1 against the Over/Under while the Wings are 5-5. Ottawa allowed at least 4 goals in each of its last five games and Detroit allows a league-high 3.80 goals per game.

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (16-18-5) visit the Pittsburgh Penguins (23-11-4) Monday at PPG Paints Arena for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Senators-Penguins sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Marcus Hogberg vs. Matt Murray

Hogberg, a third-round pick pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, will make his ninth career NHL start, and fifth of the season, Monday. He is 1-1-2 in 2019-20 with a .903 save percentage and a 3.10 goals against average. He has given up four goals in each of his last three starts.

Murray, a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, is 11-6-4 on the year with a .894 SV% and 2.96 GAA. He stopped 44 of 48 shots in a win over the Nashville Predators his last time out. He has given up 29 goals on 197 shots over his last seven games played.

Prediction

Penguins 6, Senators 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Penguins (-303) are 8-2 across their last 10 games and 15-4-2 at home for the year. They’ve won two straight, sweeping a home-and-home with the Nashville Predators Friday (5-2) and Saturday (6-4). The Senators (+240) are 4-2-4 across their last 10 games, but just 5-13-3 on the road this season. They fell 4-3 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils Sunday.

Pittsburgh will win, but there’s no value on the moneyline wager with a $10 bet returning a profit of $3.30. Seek a better return on your investment on the spread.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Penguins (-2.5, +165) are laying a rare 2 goals on the puck line. Back the SENATORS (+2.5, -200) to lose by 2 or fewer goals or win outright. Hogberg isn’t as overmatched as it may seem against the struggling Murray and each of the Senators’ last three losses went to extra time.

The Sens are 23-16 against the spread for the season and 11-10 away from home. The Pens are 19-19 ATS overall and 9-12 on home ice.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 6.5 (+120) at plus-money and rest comfortably, wake up in the morning and collect your winnings. The Sens hit the Over in eight of their last 10 games while the Pens went 5-5 against the projected totals. There’s no reason to believe in either of these ‘tenders.

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (13-17-1) pay a visit to the rival Montreal Canadiens (14-11-6) Wednesday at Bell Centre for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Senators-Canadiens sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Anders Nilsson vs. Cayden Primeau

Nilsson is expected to get a run of starts with Craig Anderson (lower body) sidelined by injury. He stopped 38 of 40 shots in a win over the Boston Bruins on Monday. He’s 8-8-1 on the season with a .913 save percentage and 3.03 goals against average.

Primeau is expected to relieve starter Carey Price on the second half of the Canadiens’ back-to-back. The 2017 seventh-round pick allowed three goals on 35 shots and took the loss in his NHL debut against Colorado last Thursday.

Prediction

Senators 5, Canadiens 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Canadiens (-176) are coming off a 4-1 road win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. The SENATORS (+145) shocked the Bruins 5-2 Monday and enter as the better-rested team. Ottawa claimed a 2-1 overtime victory in the first meeting of the season between the two Atlantic Division opponents, back on Nov. 20 at Montreal.

Montreal is just 7-7-3 on home ice, and while Ottawa is a lowly 5-12-1 on the road, it’s the value play Wednesday against an opponent it knocked off already this season.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Sens to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $14.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SENATORS (+1.5, -162) should also be played on the puck line, albeit as a less-rewarding wager with the single goal of insurance in the event of a loss. The Sens are 18-13 ATS overall and 9-9 on the road. The Habs are 16-15 ATS overall but just 6-11 on home ice. We’re betting against the inexperience of Primeau and the tired team in front of him.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are 5-5 against the O/U across their last 10 games. Take the OVER 6.5 (+110) with the Senators tacking on a few extra goals against the backup goaltender.

Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators odds, lines, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Boston Bruins at Ottawa Senators sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (20-4-6) visit the Ottawa Senators (12-17-1) Monday at Canadian Tire Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for shortly after 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Bruins-Senators sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Bruins at Senators: Projected starting goalies

Tuukka Rask vs. Anders Nilsson

Rask had won six games in a row before taking an overtime loss against the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday in which he allowed four goals on 31 shots. He is 13-2-3 on the year with a .929 save percentage and 2.15 goals against average.

Nilsson replaced injured starter Craig Anderson in Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia Flyers and Marcus Hogberg was recalled from Belleville of the AHL Monday. Nilsson should start with a record of 7-8-1, a .910 SV% and 3.10 GAA.

Bruins at Senators: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated 9 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Bruins 5, Senators 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Bruins have won both meetings between the two Atlantic Division rivals this season, and they’ve won 10 straight head-to-head meetings dating back to December 2017. Boston is coming off consecutive losses, including a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche Saturday, but it is still 8-1-1 over its last 10 games. Ottawa went 4-6 and is coming off Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Flyers.

The BRUINS (-189) are an easy play. They’re 8-3-1 on the road, while the Senators are 7-5-0 at home. Boston has the edge in Corsi (percentage of all shot attempts), scoring chances and PDO (shooting percentage plus save percentage) at 5-on-5. C Patrice Bergeron (lower body) may be returning for Boston.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Bruins to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $5.30.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Increase your profit margin by backing the BRUINS (-1.5, +140) to win by two or more goals on the road. The same $10 bet would return a profit of $14.

The Bruins are 15-15 against the spread overall and 6-6 on the road, while the Senators are 17-13 ATS overall and 8-4 at home. Thirteen of Boston’s 20 victories on the year were by at least a two-goal margin, including one of two against Ottawa. Thirteen of the Senators’ 17 losses were by multiple goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The first two meetings of the year between the two played to either side of Monday’s projected total of 5.5 total goals. The Bruins are 4-6 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games while the Sens were 5-5. Take the OVER 5.5 (-149), with Bergeron’s possible return boosting Boston’s goal output.

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (10-11-1) host the New York Rangers (9-8-2) Friday at Canadian Tire Centre, with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Rangers-Senators sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Rangers at Senators: Projected starting goalies

Henrik Lundqvist vs. Craig Anderson

Lundqvist is 5-4-1 with a .910 save percentage and a 3.31 goals against average. His last outing was one of his most impressive of the season, as he stopped 30 of 31 shots in a 4-1 home win over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Anderson is 4-7-0 through 11 starts and two relief appearances. He sports a .901 SV% and 3.11 GAA. He stopped 35 of 36 shots in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday. This will be his first home start since Oct. 27.

Rangers at Senators: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Friday at 1 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Senators 4, Rangers 2

Moneyline (ML)

The SENATORS (-115) are slight favorites on home ice as winners of two straight. They have taken advantage of a favorable schedule of late to go 4-1 over their last five games and 6-2 over their last eight. Despite the 4-1 win over the Capitals on Wednesday, the Rangers are just 2-2 across their last four and lost their last two road games in Florida by a combined 13-6.

Ottawa is 6-4 on home ice while New York is 3-4 on the road. Side with the home team.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Sens to win outright in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $8.70.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

OTTAWA (-1.5, +220) is a more profitable play when laying a goal and needing to win by two or more tallies. New York is dealing with injuries to C Mika Zibanejad (upper body) and D Marc Staal (ankle). Sens LW Vladislav Namestnikov (lower body), C Artem Anisimov (groin) and D Erik Brannstrom (undisclosed) remain sidelined.

The Rangers are 12-7 ATS but a less-impressive 4-3 ATS on the road. The Sens are 12-10 overall and 6-4 at home. This is a rematch of a Nov. 4 game in New York, which the Sens won 6-2.

Over/Under (O/U)

The two games played between the teams this year have fallen to either side of Friday’s projected total of 6.5. Take the UNDER (-134) with injuries negatively affecting both sides.

The Rangers are 4-6 against the O/U across their last 10 games. The Senators are 3-7 over their last 10.

Senators-Devils odds: New Jersey a rare favorite at home vs. Ottawa

Previewing Wednesday’s Ottawa Senators at New Jersey Devils sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Ottawa Senators (6-10-1) and New Jersey Devils (5-7-4) hook up Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at Prudential Center. The two teams occupy eighth place in the Atlantic and Metropolitan Divisions, respectively. We analyze the Senators-Devils odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Devils: Projected starting goalies

Anders Nilsson vs. MacKenzie Blackwood

Nilsson seems to have taken over the starting job from veteran Craig Anderson. The 29-year-old is 4-4-1 through nine starts with a .921 save percentage and a 2.98 goals against average. He won three of his last four starts.

Likewise, Blackwood continues to outperform projected starter Cory Schneider in the Devils’ crease. The 22-year-old is 5-3-3 through 10 starts and one relief appearance with a .896 SV% and 2.93 GAA. He also won three of his last four starts.

Senators at Devils: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Senators 3, Devils 2

Moneyline (ML)

The -182 odds for a Devils team just 2-2-4 on home ice aren’t worthwhile with a $10 bet returning a profit of $5.50 on a risky venture. The SENATORS can be played at the more appealing +150 odds for a $15 profit.

Ottawa is just 1-6-1 away from home but it is 5-5 over the last 10 games. New Jersey went 5-3-2 over its last 10 games after a horrid start, but the Devils still possess a minus-19 goal differential to the Senators’ minus-12.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Stick with the moneyline rather than laying the -182 for the Sens to cover the puck line of +1.5 and either lose by a single goal or win outright. They’re 8-9 against the spread overall and 3-5 on the road, but the incentive is with the outright win.

The Devils are 5-11 on the puck line this season and just 2-6 at home. They’re getting +150 odds for a win of two or more goals. Two of their five wins this season were by at least two-goal margins, but that won’t be the case Wednesday.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are 6-4 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games, with sloppy defensive play and poor goaltending taking the bulk of the blame. With both Nilsson and Blackwood playing well of late, side with the UNDER 6.5 (-154).

Esten’s NHL betting record: 51-56
