Watch: ESPN roasts CFP selection committee, Alabama in funny video

The College Football Playoff will feature: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma. ESPN from pokes fun at Alabama and the CFP selection

The College Football Playoff will have an unfamiliar site this season: no Alabama Crimson Tide. The CFP Selection Committee isn’t used to this and ESPN didn’t hesitate when it came to making fun of the Committee:

The Playoff will feature: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma in what should be the most drama free top four ever. Years like this show why it wouldn’t make sense for the Playoff to expand. College football should only reward the elite teams of the nation.

It’ll be interesting to see which two-loss team is ranked highest. Georgia, Penn State, Oregon, Florida, Alabama, and Baylor all have a case to be the highest ranked team outside of the Playoff. UGA has the most impressive resume of all these teams and beat Florida, so they should get the nod as the highest ranked SEC team. Expect UGA to play Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.

Oklahoma has two more hurdles to leap for Playoff: Big 12 Championship win, Georgia loss

No. 6 ranked Oklahoma got its gift from an old foe on Friday night. Oregon beating Utah 37-15 gives the Sooners two more hurdles to clim.

No. 6 ranked Oklahoma (11-1. 8-1 Big 12) got its gift from an old foe on Friday night.

Ahead of the Sooners’ Big 12 Championship bout with No. 7 Baylor (11-1, 8-1), Oklahoma now needs one more scenario out of its control to make the College Football Playoff.

Oregon took it to No. 5 Utah Friday night in the PAC-12 Championship game, beating the Utes 35-17. The win ultimately elevated Oklahoma’s ranks in the College Football Playoff race, giving them two more scenarios before cementing themselves into college football’s final four.

No. 2 LSU will need to beat Georgia. The Bulldogs, currently ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings, would end all of the Sooners and Jalen Hurts’ dreams of playing for the national championship.

The other, Oklahoma beating Baylor in the Big 12 Championship.

The Bears had a 28-3 lead in the second-quarter of the first matchup between the two teams. They then had a 31-10 halftime lead.

Oklahoma stormed back, completing its biggest comeback victory in school history in winning 34-31.

The Sooners and Baylor Bears kickoff at 11 a.m. CT from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on ABC.

Oregon beats Utah 37-15, enhancing Oklahoma’s College Football Playoff hopes

Oregon jumped out to a 20-point lead at half, and that’s all the Ducks needed. Oklahoma needed Oregon to win, and the Sooners got just that.

Oregon jumped out to a 20-point lead at half, and that’s all the Ducks needed.

Head coach Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma needed Oregon to make sure the argument between the No. 6 ranked Sooners and No. 5 ranked Utah was easier. The Ducks delivered, dominating the Utes 37-15 in the PAC-12 Championship.

Utah’s defense is good, but it wasn’t good enough to overcome its offensive deficiencies. Utes’ quarterback threw two interceptions, putting his defense in tough spots to stop Oregon from scoring. The Ducks eventually ran out the clock in the fourth-quarter, cementing their upset win in the PAC-12 Championship.

Utah, ranked one spot ahead of Oklahoma, will now fall. The Sooners have as good of a shot as they have had all year to make the College Football Playoff with a win against No. 7 Baylor in the Big 12 Championship.

Oklahoma and the Bears will kickoff at 11 a.m. CT on ABC from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The winner, pending the outcome of LSU and Georgia in the SEC Championship, will be in the driver’s seat for the final College Football Playoff.

UNLV Reportedly Looking at Utah DC Morgan Scalley, Oregon OC Marcus Arroyo

Will the Rebels take a coordinator from Utah or Oregon?

UNLV Reportedly Looking at Utah DC Morgan Scalley, Oregon OC Marcus Arroyo

Pac-12 title game could feature the future UNLV head coach.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Rebels are looking for an up and coming coach.

The UNLV coaching search is underway but UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois is in no rush to pick the next coach. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that the search will likely go through late next week.

The Las Vegas-based paper has a few names to report on as well and they are young coordinators on ranked teams. Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley and Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo.

The reports say there is at least some level of mutual interest between Scalley and Arroyo; neither has been a head coach. This should make some UNLV fans more interested in tuning into the Pac-12 title game this Friday night as it is the Ducks vs. the Utes.

Scalley has been a mainstay at Utah ever since he was a player where he played safety where was named Mountain West co-defensive player of the year in 2004, the same year the Utes busted the BCS.

He is known as a great recruiter and was Utah’s recruiting coordinator from 2009 through 2016. Scalley was a big reason the Utes got talent from Texas as that was one of his primary areas in recruitment.

This year the Utes defense is one of the best in the FBS and is third in scoring defense at 11.3-points per game allowed, fourth in yards per play allowed and first in rushing yards per play allowed.

As for Arroyo, he also is the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach in addition to running the Oregon offense. Being the quarterback’s coach has to be alluring for UNLV as he is going to have a first-round, if not a top-10, quarterback selected in the upcoming NFL Draft in Justin Herbert.

In his senior year, Herbert has thrown for 3,140 yards, 31 touchdowns, only five interceptions, and is completing 67.5 percent of his passes. The Rebels could use that kind of output under center since this year saw UNLV play multiple quarterbacks with neither having overwhelming success.

Arroyo also has ties to the conference as he played quarterback at San Jose State and ultimately became its offensive coordinator and he held that same position with Wyoming for two years. He also has a year of NFL experience as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback coach in 2014.

With these two coaches involved in the Pac-12 title game, this Friday night do not expect a hire to be made.

How Penn State’s, Oregon’s losses impact the College Football Playoff picture

The CFP race has been simplified.

Welcome to Before The Snap, For The Win’s college football show where we’ll break down the sport’s trending storylines, examine each week’s biggest matchups and track the College Football Playoff and Heisman Trophy races.

Two more College Football Playoff lost in Week 13, and the playoff race continues to be simplified.

Penn State lost to now-No. 1 Ohio State, while Oregon fell to Arizona State. It was the second loss of the season for both the Nittany Lions and the Ducks, which effectively ends their playoff runs. No two-loss team has ever been invited to the playoff, and for that to happen this year, the team would have to be a conference champion, and we’d need some late chaos around the other conferences. Additionally, Oregon could still win the Pac-12, but Penn State has no chance to be a conference champ.

So what’s the larger impact of Penn State’s and Oregon’s losses?

Penn State coach James Franklin  (Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports)

Behind Ohio State, LSU and Clemson — assuming the top-3 teams win out — it means that remaining fourth playoff spot will some down to Alabama, Oklahoma or Baylor and Utah.

Also, the Big Ten’s chance to go from having no teams in the last two years to two teams in is over. For a while, it seemed like the Nittany Lions could join Ohio State in the playoff if the right scenario played out, but Penn State needed to beat the Buckeyes for that to happen.

For Oregon, the loss hurts the Pac-12 in the eyes of everyone else, as it tries to push for a serious playoff contender.

But the good news is it still has Utah, which is 10-1, No. 6 in the latest playoff rankings and has a shot to win the conference title game. It still will have to beat Oregon, which isn’t looking quite as good as it was a couple weeks ago, but it might be hard to deny a one-loss Pac-12 team a shot at the playoff.

Oregon’s 31-28 loss to Arizona State opens College Football Playoff door wide open for Oklahoma

Chaos is what was needed and chaos is what Oklahoma got. Oregon’s 31-28 loss to Arizona State has opened OU’s CFP hopes wide open.

Chaos is what was needed, and chaos is what No. 9 Oklahoma (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) got.

While leading Big 12 Conference opponent TCU 28-24 with under two to play, No. 6 Oregon has fallen to Arizona State 31-28.

Justin Herbert threw two interceptions in the Duck’s loss.

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 402 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Sun Devils’ upset over Oregon.

With an Oklahoma win, they will move at least one spot in the College Football Playoff rankings.

The Ducks let up 535 yards of offense and won despite committing 12 penalties for 90 yards. The Sun Devils kept the Ducks off the field, holding on to the ball for 36 minutes and 25 seconds to Oregon’s 23 minutes and seconds of possession.

The Ducks’ is half of what the Sooners need to happen in the PAC-12. Utah needs to lose a game either next week or to Oregon in the PAC-12 Championship for Oklahoma to have a better shot to get into the CFP.

Georgia, Alabama miss out on 5-star linebacker

Georgia football, Alabama and a few other SEC schools missed out on a commitment from 5-sta LB Noah Sewell.

Georgia, Alabama and a few other SEC contenders missed out on securing a commitment from a five-star linebacker on Friday night from the class of 2020.

Noah Sewell, the nation’s No. 2 inside linebacker out of Orem, Utah, tweeted his commitment to Oregon after winning the Utah 5A state title game on Friday.

Sewell, a 6-2 266 pound linebacker, is a monster of a player who is too small for the defensive tackle position but too big for a defensive back. Once he slims down a bit and adds some more speed, he will be a huge difference maker for Oregon for years.

Sewell comes from a football family. He has three brothers who currently play college football; one is an offensive tackle at Oregon, one is a linebacker at Nevada and the other plays safety at Utah.

Sewell visited Georgia on September 21st for the Bulldogs’ game vs Notre Dame.

How Auburn could shake up the College Football Playoff without playing in it

The Tigers could be huge spoilers for multiple teams.

Welcome to Before The Snap, For The Win’s college football show where we’ll break down the sport’s trending storylines, examine each week’s biggest matchups and track the College Football Playoff and Heisman Trophy races.

In the middle of a brutal schedule, Auburn is 7-2 and No. 12 in the College Football Playoff rankings with two losses, and it still has to play No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Alabama. The Tigers have just a five percent chance to make the playoff at this point, but they do have the opportunity to have a massive impact on the playoff picture.

If LSU, Ohio State and Clemson continue playing the way they have all season, they’ll be the first three teams in. But that fourth spot could come down to Georgia, Alabama or Oregon, among other playoff hopefuls.

What do those three teams have in common? Auburn.

In Week 1, Oregon lost, 27-21, to the Tigers, and that remains the Ducks’ only defeat as they try to become a one-loss Pac-12 champ looking for a playoff spot. But depending on how other conferences close out the regular season, Oregon’s one loss could end up keeping it out of the top four.

Auburn hosts Georgia on Saturday, and upsetting the Bulldogs would hand them their second loss of the season and likely knock them out of playoff contention. A two-loss team has never been invited to the playoff, so it would probably take a conference championship and some chaos for that to happen.

And in Week 14, Alabama travels to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on Auburn, and after the Crimson Tide lost to LSU in Week 11, a Tigers win could shut the door on their playoff hopes too.

Auburn probably won’t make the playoff, but it can be a huge spoiler this year.

The Georgia Bulldogs landed fourth in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. UGA checks in as the first one-loss team thanks to their big wins over Notre Dame and Florida. Behind the Bulldogs are in the order: Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, and Oklahoma.

This week the Dawgs take on twelfth ranked Auburn in what should be a defensive battle. Barring a collapse, Georgia is heading to the SEC Championship Game to play Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers.

Following the release of the CFP Rankings, their were quite a few takes on who should be ranked where. Here’s some of the best ones:

This would be a nightmare scenario for the CFP Committee:

Thus scenario would be even worse if Ohio State lost to Penn State who went on to win the Big Ten.
