Tuesday numbered among the darkest days in MLB history but you’d never know it from watching the league’s commissioner.
After careening toward a self-imposed deadline during an owner-imposed lockout, Rob Manfred strolled up to the dais in Jupiter, Florida to deliver the news he was canceling the first two series of the 2022 season in rather chipper fashion.
For anyone watching on mute, the commissioner looked more likely to announce the lockout was ending than explain he was dragging the sport further into a pit of despair. And it’s that image—the one of Manfred smiling at the lectern, attempting to fire off jokes with the assembled media—that may be impossible for him to overcome.
This is the same Rob Manfred who previously said canceling games would be “disastrous” for the league. His mood on Tuesday certainly didn’t seem to reflect that attitude.
More so than calling the World Series’ trophy—the Commissioner’s Trophy—”a piece of metal”, more so than not punishing any players involved in the Houston Astros cheating scandal and more so than explaining without any evidence that owning a baseball team is a bad investment, Manfred’s stewardship of baseball will be remembered for this: a jovial and unperturbed demeanor while ensuring baseball will not be played.
MLB Twitter was having absolutely none of it.
Reminder that Manfred and the owners locked out the players, then waited 43 days to even make contact with the union. They wanted this to happen https://t.co/iC3ByeHinC
Not sure laughing and joking around — even if just in passing! — is the move when you're announcing what should be a deeply sad moment for the institution you run.
The past 24 hours feel like nothing more than a master class by the league in trying to act like they cared about getting a deal done in time to save Opening Day.
The last 24hrs I’d say there was cautious optimism on the players side because the owners were actually at the table negotiating with us toward a deal. What we’re asking is more than fair. If there’s no deal the optimism from MLB was a PR illusion to make it look like they tried.
Cancel opening day a whole tradition thrown out the window today, one of the biggest and most exciting days of the season, 😢 A sad day for all of us who love baseball. #MLBPA#MLB
“The concerns of our fans are at the very top of our consideration list.” — Rob Manfred, on the day MLB canceled regular-season games, during a league-initiated lockout
Watching @MLBNetwork now…https://t.co/7hjRXp14QM. I’d just like one thing. If times are so tough for these clubs financially over the last 5 years…show us the financials. Be transparent. I guess we will see ya when we see ya fans. 😔😔
"It's Ken's last day so we'll give him the last question" Sarcastic Manfred: "you've been so kind, sorry to see you go. We're really gonna miss you" Ken: "Feeling is mutual" pic.twitter.com/QTsTSXRyxR

Tigers take the opener behind Blake Money’s seven-inning performance.
Pinstripes, punchouts, and a packed house at Alex Box Stadium. Ah, baseball season is back in the Bayou.
The No. 8 LSU Tigers did NOT disappoint against the Maine Black Bears as the Tigers won 13-1. There were a lot of questions going into the season about how the lineup would look and how the pitching staff would look. The Tigers have plenty of great talent, so it was up to new head coach Jay Johnson to figure out where each piece fit in.
It all started with the opening day first pitch from former Tigers head coach and Hall of Famer, Paul Mainieri. After that, it became the Money show. By that, I mean the Blake Money show.
The 6-foot-7-inch, 235-pound Sophomore came out throwing darts. He pitched 7 innings and gave up two hits, one walk, and 10 strikeouts. It was the first time since Jake Tompkins in 2003 that an opening day starter recorded 10 or more strikeouts.
I know what you’re thinking, “We’ve seen all the posts and the preseason hype around the golden spike award watch lists and preseason All-American hitters. How’d they do?” We’ll get to those guys, but they weren’t the ones that really stole the show on Friday Night.
That title goes to Brayden Jobert.
A man that wasn’t even in the starting lineup made the biggest impact in the batter’s box. Jobert played at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Louisiana, last year where he earned JUCO All-American honors. There he d batted .386 with 15 doubles, 16 homers, 71 RBI, a .813 slugging percentage, and a .469 on-base percentage.
Who had the first hit of the 2022 season? Who scored the first run of the 2022 season? The answer to both of those questions is Brayden Jobert. He hit a single during his first at-bat and during his second at-bat, he hit a homerun to Right Field. He finished the night 2-for-2 with two RBI, a single, a sac-fly, and a homer. That one run in the fourth inning was all the Tigers needed, but they didn’t stop there. The bats got HOT and the Tigers ended with 13 runs on 12 hits.

To celebrate the opening day of the 2021 MLB season, Klay Thompson shared a throwback photo on Instagram from his days as a little leaguer.
Although the NBA is pushing towards the postseason, the sports world turned its attention to the baseball diamond for the start of the 2021 Major League Baseball season.
To celebrate Opening Day, Klay Thompson chimed in on social media. The Golden State Warriors shooting guard shared a throwback photo on Instagram from his days as a little leaguer. Along with sharing his love for baseball, the three-time NBA champion revealed his favorite baseball team growing up.
Thompson tabbed the Boston Red Sox as his favorite team growing up, naming Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez and David “Big Papi” Ortiz as some of his favorite players.
Despite donning Red Sox gear and baseball pants in the photo, the sharpshooting guard was still holding a basketball.
Thompson’s younger brother Trayce is a professional baseball player with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. The outfielder has had stints in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox.
On Opening Day, the San Francisco Giants were in the Pacific Northwest for series against the Seattle Mariners. Golden State’s former neighbor, the Athletics, welcomed the Houston Astros to the Bay Area for a four-game series.
