Maryland’s first-week mobile betting stats show how sportsbooks successfully use free bets to lure customers

A minor setback for a major comeback.

Marylanders are beating the books…for now.

In the eight days of November from the time mobile sports betting went live in Maryland until the end of the month, the mobile sports gambling industry had a net loss of about $38 million, according to a Baltimore Banner report.

But that may have been part of the plan.

Maryland bettors wagered $186 million through online apps over the first eight days of mobile sports betting. But a whopping $64 million of that money was promotional free plays. So, more than a third of the money Marylanders used to place bets came directly from the sportsbooks themselves.

Promotional free plays are a tactic sportsbooks use to lure new customers in a competitive industry. But once a market matures, they aren’t offered at nearly the same rate as when the sportsbooks first open in a new region. The hope is that customers get hooked using those free bets and come back with their own money in the future.

For sportsbooks, it’s a minor setback with the hope of a major comeback. Six of the seven operational sportsbook apps in Maryland reported losses in the first month. When the free plays dry up, that’s when books expect to see the fruits of their initial offerings.

In Maryland, online sportsbooks are allowed to offer unlimited promotional free plays in the first 12 months of operation, according to the Banner. After that, they can only spend 20% of their profits on free plays.

California Democratic Party voted in opposition of online sports betting measure

Prop 27 didn’t get an endorsement.

The California Democratic Party revealed its ballot measure endorsements for November, and the measure to legalize online sports betting was not among them.

The party voted Sunday in opposition of Prop 27, the online sports betting measure, while remaining neutral on a separate measure to legalize sports betting at tribal casinos and race horse tracks. The party’s stances on these competing measures give voters a guide on which way to vote when they appear on ballots in November.

The only thing left to be seen is whether voters will take the recommendations on sports betting, which is currently legal in over 30 states including at least 20 that allow online betting.

“By opposing Prop 27, California Democrats rejected out-of-state corporations and reaffirmed their commitment to California’s Indian tribes,” Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Tribal Chairman Reid Milanovich said in a press release. “Prop 27 is not a solution to anything. It would expose children to a massive expansion of gambling and turn every cell phone, gaming console, tablet and laptop into a gambling device. Prop 27 is a direct attack on tribal gaming and Indian self-reliance.”

California’s online sports betting measure will get a public vote on the November ballot

The Golden State could soon become the latest to legalize online betting.

A push in California to legalize online sports betting reached an important milestone on Tuesday, as more than 1.6 million signatures were gathered to successfully push the initiative to the state’s ballot on Nov. 8.

Voters will have an opportunity to choose between bringing sports betting online or limiting it to “brick and mortar” facilities, a separate measure that also previously reached the million-signatures threshold. In-person wagers could happen at places like tribal casinos and horse race tracks, though stadiums and arenas would be on hold for on-site lounges seen in other states.

New York and its population of 19 million set a record for online wagers in a month when the state went live in January. Overall, they bet $1.62 billion and the state made $57 million in tax revenue that month. With a population of 39 million, California would surely break that mark. If the state mandated that online betting begin no later than Aug. 29, 2023, the estimate of annual taxable money is $50 billion.

The online measure has 85% of taxable revenue earmarked for homelessness and mental health support and 15% for tribes not participating in the market. According to the Regional Task Force on Homelessness San Diego, state polling shows 59% of residents canvassed support the online measure. It needs 50% in yes votes to pass.
