After winning the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, the Oklahoma Sooners entered the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll for the first time in 2024-2025.

It’s been a strong start to the season for Porter Moser and the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team. OU moved to 7-0 on the season after securing the [autotag]Battle 4 Atlantis[/autotag] tournament title, earning wins over Providence, No. 24 Arizona, and Louisville.

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners rank in KenPom after Battle 4 Atlantis tournament title?

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners rank in KenPom after securing the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament Title?

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.

The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a 7-0 start to the 2024-2025 college basketball season after going 3-0 in the Bahamas, securing the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament title.

Along the way, the Sooners picked up their first top-25 win of the season, defeating the Arizona Wildcats, and also earned wins over Providence and Louisville.

The trio of games represented Oklahoma’s most significant tests of the season, and the Sooners passed with flying colors.

The Sooners moved up to No. 40 in the nation in the KenPom rankings put together by college basketball analyst Ken Pomeroy. That puts the Sooners at No. 9 in the SEC in his ranking system. The rankings are meant as a predictive indicator for each basketball team in Division 1.

Offensively, the Sooners rank No. 40 in the nation, according to KenPom. They’re No. 44 in the nation on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior [autotag]Jalon Moore[/autotag], true freshman [autotag]Jeremiah Fears[/autotag], and guard [autotag]Kobe Elvis[/autotag] led the way for Oklahoma over the course of the tournament. Moore and Fears each had a pair of 20-point games during their time in Atlantis.

Moore scored 24 points in both of OU’s wins over Arizona and Louisville and was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Fears led the team in scoring with 26 points in the win over Arizona and scored 20 against Providence to open the tournament. Elvis led OU in scoring in the win over Providence.

Porter Moser and his staff have put together a team with multiple scoring threats and a team that plays with toughness down the stretch.

Oklahoma’s next opportunity to build on their undefeated start to the season comes on December 3 when they host the ACC’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and former guard Javian McCollum.

Jeremiah Fears stars for the Oklahoma Sooners in first career start

Oklahoma true freshman Jeremiah Fears leads Sooners in scoring in first collegiate start.

The Oklahoma Sooners are 4-0 on the season after their 28-point win over East Texas A&M on Thursday night. The Sooners are relying on a number of transfer portal additions to supplement the play of Jalon Moore and Sam Godwin. The Sooners have had several standout performances to start the season.

The latest came from true freshman Jeremiah Fears, who made his first collegiate start on Thursday. Fears finished as Oklahoma’s leading scorer with 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting. He also added five assists and four rebounds in the win.

Fears is now averaging 15.5 points per game early in his college career.

“He did a lot of really good things,” Porter Moser told the media after the win. “He makes a lot happen with his speed. He can create for others and he makes a ton of good plays. There’s still a learning curve on other plays, situationally for him, but I thought he did a good job.”

Fears has shown a fearless attitude, driving the lane and attacking the basket. His speed has been difficult for opposing teams to handle, and he is a fantastic passer.

So far in his Sooners career, he’s shooting 51.2% from the field, including 64.3% on two-point attempts. He’s gotten thrown into the deep end with 27 minutes a game. Moser has given the former blue-chip prospect a lot of work in the early part of the season ahead of more challenging competition ahead.

Fears have rewarded Moser’s trust with good decision-making and aggressiveness to help supplement what Oklahoma’s getting from veterans like Moore, Godwin, Kobe Elvis, and Duke Miles.

The Sooners will take part in the Battle 4 Atlantis starting on Nov. 27 when they take on the Providence Friars.

Takeaways from Oklahoma’s win over Northwestern State

Oklahoma got off to a sluggish start in the first half but turned it around after the break to beat Northwestern State 73-57.

The Oklahoma Sooners moved to 2-0 on the season with a 73-67 win over Northwestern State. It didn’t go as easy as expected as the Sooners trailed by six at halftime.

Northwestern State’s length gave them trouble in the paint but ultimately the Sooners talent came through down the stretch. It was a two-point game at 46-44 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the contest. From that point on, OU outscored the Demons 27 to 13 to close the game and earn the decisive victory.

Here are the biggest takeaways from the game.

1. Jalon Moore season

Oklahoma Sooners Jalon Moore had a fantastic game. He was 7 of 14 from the field, 2 of 5 from three and hit 7 of 8 free throws while pulling down seven rebounds and recording a pair of assists. 19 of his 23 points came in the second half of the game after the Sooners trailed Northwestern State.

After shooting just 2 of 7 from the field in the first half, Moore turned it around and took over the ball game to lead the Sooners in scoring.

Moore has a chance to become a household name this season and is showing an expanded element to his game with his expanded range from three. Moore was 2 of 5 from three, with both makes coming after halftime.

If Moore can play like he did in the second half for a full 40 minutes, the Sooners will be hard to beat this year.

2. Start the True Freshman

Through two games in 2024-2025, Jeremiah Fears has played in a reserve role for the Sooners. But through two games, it’s clear he’s got a lot of talent.

He led the Sooners in +/- with a plus-22 and finished second on the evening in scoring with 15.

Though he had six turnovers in the game, he’s showing off his ability to be a playmaker for the Sooners offense. He was on the floor a lot in the final ten minutes, showing Moser’s trust in the true freshman point guard.

3. Second Half Turnaround

The Sooners went into halftime trailing Northwestern State by six. They proceeded to outscore their opponent by 22 points in the second half. Whatever Moser and his assistants said at halftime got the team going and they ran away with the win.

You never want to shoot under 40% for a half like they did in the first, but Oklahoma came back in the second half and shot far better at 53% in the second. They also made four more trips to the free throw line after halftime.

The Oklahoma Sooners can’t afford to have sluggish starts like they did Monday night. They’ll face much better teams down the road, and getting off to a slow start like that could bury them before halftime.

Still, the Sooners are 2-0 on the season with a pair of double-digit wins. They’ll face Stetson on Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.

Trio of SEC teams featured inside top 10 of USA TODAY Sports MBB Coaches Poll

A trio of Oklahoma’s future SEC opponents land inside the top 10 of USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners are 1-0 as the get set to take on Northwestern State on Monday night. Now in the SEC, the Sooners have a new group of teams to keep an eye on in the weekly USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

No longer having to deal with the likes of the Kansas Jayhawks, who come in at No. 1 in this week’s coaches poll, one would think the schedule might look lighter. As the great Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast, my friend.” Big-time challenges await the Sooners in the SEC.

Coming in just behind Kansas at No. 2 are the Alabama Crimson Tide. At No. 4 are the Auburn Tigers who picked up a huge win over the Houston Cougars over the weekend. Also in the top 10 are the Tennessee Volunteers, coming in at No. 9.

The Sooners will open SEC play with a matchup in Tuscaloosa against Alabama on Jan. 4. They won’t play Auburn until Feb. 4 and will Tennessee four days later on Feb. 8. That will be the only time the Sooners face the SEC’s top 10 teams in this week’s coaches poll.

Oklahoma isn’t receiving any votes and will likely be a long shot to land in the Coaches Poll until they face better competition. Their first big test comes when they take on Providence on Nov. 27 in Norman. They’ll also host Georgia Tech at the beginning of December.

Big 12 was a grind but SEC Men’s Basketball is deep

Oklahoma Men’s Basketball team faces stiff challenge in deep SEC.

Oklahoma Men’s Basketball will open the season on Nov. 4. With less than two weeks to the start of the 2024-2025 men’s basketball season, the USA TODAY Sports Preseason Men’s Coaches Poll was released on Wednesday.

The Oklahoma Sooners weren’t ranked after missing the tournament for the third time in three seasons under Porter Moser. One would think after leaving the Big 12 that they’d get a reprieve from the tough schedules they’ve had to endure. But that won’t be the case in the SEC.

In the preseason Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, nine SEC teams were featured compared to just five in the Big 12.

College Sports Wire’s Andy Patton discussed that depth in and several more takeaways in reaction to the release of the preseason Coaches Poll.

The conference is now arguably the deepest and most talented in the entire sport, and could conceivably get as many as ten teams in the NCAA Tournament, with other programs like South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State (who received 2 votes) in the mix as well. – Patton, College Sports Wire

The Sooners have an upward climb on their hands and Moser and his staff are hoping this year’s collection of portal additions and incoming freshmen can help Jalon Moore push this team into the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2020-2021 season.

How many teams will Oklahoma Men’s Basketball face in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll?

The SEC is deep and Oklahoma Men’s Basketball will face a difficult road based on the Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll.

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.

Year 4 of the Porter Moser era will tip off on Nov. 4 when the Oklahoma Sooners Men’s Basketball team hosts Lindenwood at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners hope that will be the start of a run to the NCAA tournament for the first time under Moser.

Oklahoma’s retooled the roster once again through the transfer portal to build around returning forward Jalon Moore. Much like life in the Big 12, the Sooners will have a gauntlet to work through to make it to March Madness in 2024-2025.

The Sooners will face nine teams featured in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll. They’re first game in SEC play will be a road trip against the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide on January 4. Oklahoma will also face No. 11 Auburn, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 15 Texas A&M (twice), No. 16 Arkansas, No. 19 Texas (twice), No. 21 Florida, No. 23 Kentucky, and No. 25 Ole Miss.

It’s a difficult slate and the Sooners will go into new environments. How Oklahoma’s able to integrate their transfer portal additions with freshmen talent Dayton Forsythe and Kuol Atak will determine how much success the Sooners have in a pivotal year one in the SEC.

OU Men’s Basketball included in top 9 for four-star forward

The Oklahoma Sooners were included in the top 9 schools for 2025 small forward out of Oregon.

The Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team have had a strong offseason on the recruiting trail. In addition to their transfer portal additions, [autotag]Porter Moser[/autotag] has picked up commitments from 2025 top-100 small forward [autotag]Alec Blair[/autotag] and 2024 top-100 point guard [autotag]Jeremiah Fears[/autotag]. The Sooners are in pursuit of another top-100 prospect, this time 2025 four-star small forward [autotag]Winters Grady[/autotag].

Grady is the No. 66 player in the On3 Industry Ranking and the No. 15 small forward in the 2025 recruiting class. The Lake Oswego, Oregon native included the Oklahoma Sooners in his top nine along with Oregon, New Mexico, Michigan, Arizona State, Colorado, Creighton, Iowa and USC.

“I really like Coach (Porter) Moser. My dad and I both really like him,” Winters told On3’s Joe Tipton. “He’s a basketball mind. We sat on our last Zoom call for about 30 minutes after it ended just talking basketball. That was a great thing to see because I’m a basketball junkie too. I just love watching it and playing it, it’s kind of my whole life. So seeing someone else like that, knowing they are as invested as I am and do things like I do, is good to see.

“Coach Moser sees me as a three-level scorer and that my game is really translatable to college and beyond. He thinks I fit well in their freestyle type of system.”

The Oklahoma Sooners are still looking for their first tournament berth in the Porter Moser era, but he’s proven to be successful at previous stops. As he continues to build the roster, adding top-100 players like Grady will give him a better shot to take Oklahoma deep into the NCAA tournament.

Oklahoma lands commitment from point guard Jeremiah Fears

Porter Moser landed four-star point guard Jeremiah Fears, who will join the 2024-2025 Sooners.

After missing the [autotag]NCAA Tournament[/autotag] each of the past three years, the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team will be under a great deal of pressure when the 2024-2025 season rolls around. Head coach [autotag]Porter Moser[/autotag] knows this after failing to make the tourney in each of his first three seasons at OU. He’s trying to ensure that his team has enough talent to take a step forward into the postseason next year.

Moser and the Sooners got a big boost in the form of high school recruiting on Saturday, as they landed four-star point guard [autotag]Jeremiah Fears[/autotag] out of Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona.

Fears is the second-highest-rated recruit that Oklahoma has added in the modern era. In-state prospect [autotag]Trae Young[/autotag] is the only higher-ranked player to commit to the Sooners.

Fears decommitted from Illinois on July 1, opening the door for the OU staff to swoop in a make their big move. Fears took to social media to announce that he’ll be coming to Norman.

In addition, the four-star will be reclassifying to the 2024 class, meaning he’ll join the team this upcoming season.

The pledge of Fears is a big get for Porter Moser, whose seat is a bit warm heading into this winter. He’s the highest-rated recruit Moser has signed since coming to Norman, and he gives the team a scorer at the lead guard spot. While the Trae Young comparisons are probably a bit too lofty, it can’t be understated that Saturday’s commitment was huge for the program, and for its head coach.

Former Sooner Alondes Williams throws down monster dunk in Summer League

Williams spent two seasons in Norman before transferring to Wake Forest.

Former Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball player [autotag]Alondes Williams[/autotag] is making quite the impression on the NBA this summer.

The former OU guard is taking part in the NBA2K Summer League as a member of the Miami Heat. He threw down perhaps the dunk of the summer in Las Vegas on Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

10/10, no notes.

Williams played two seasons for the Sooners from 2019 to 2021. He was a member of the last OU men’s basketball team to win a game in the [autotag]NCAA tournament,[/autotag] as Oklahoma made it to the second round in 2021, [autotag]Lon Kruger[/autotag]’s final season.

The combo guard transferred to Wake Forest for his final season of college basketball before going undrafted in 2022. He signed with the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Miami Heat. Plays like that could help him catch on in the league.

Williams is trying to become the fourth active Sooner in the NBA after [autotag]Blake Griffin[/autotag]’s retirement earlier this year. [autotag]Buddy Hield[/autotag] (Warriors), [autotag]Trae Young[/autotag] (Hawks) and [autotag]Austin Reaves[/autotag] (Lakers) are the other three.
