Ohio vs Wyoming Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl 5 Things To Know

Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Ohio started 2-3, lost star QB Kurtis Rourke late in the year, and didn’t show much of a defense for a bulk of the season. But everything flipped under head coach Tim Albin, the team went on a seven-game winning streak to get to the MAC Championship. Losing 17-7 to Toledo in the title game wasn’t fun, but the team remains relatively intact. On the flip side …

Wyoming is very much NOT bringing its normal 2022 self into this. It’s missing almost all of its key running backs and top target Joshua Cobbs, but it should still be able to run its style of play. It’s going to pound, and play defense, and try to keep the score low.

It’s the fifth bowl appearance for the Cowboys under head coach Craig Bohl. He lost the first one in the 2016 Poinsettia to BYU, but reeled off three straight since including two over MAC teams and an Arizona Bowl over Georgia State.

Ohio has also won three straight bowl games, but it hasn’t been in one since 2019. It was 2-8 all-time in bowls before this recent stretch – it’s a big deal for the program beyond just shooting for a ten-win season.

The 2021 version was canceled – Boise State had to bow out against Central Michigan thanks to COVID issues. The previous two were rough – San Jose State wasn’t itself in a blowout against Ball State in 2020 due to COVID, and Wyoming whacked Georgia State 38-17 in 2019. Before that, three of the first four were outstanding with two overtime thrillers and a great inaugural meeting when Nevada hung on two beat Colorado State.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Ohio Will Win The Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl

Again, most of the normal pieces are there.

Kurtis Rourke went down with his knee injury in the middle of November, but if there’s any sort of a silver lining, it allowed back CJ Harris to get meaningful time running the attack. He’s big, he can run – he rumbled for three scores in the win over Bowling Green – and he’s got a whole lot of help from the other skill parts.

On the flip side, Wyoming’s missing parts are going to hurt. Ohio’s defense needs as much help as it can get, but its biggest issue is against teams that can throw – that’s not how UW rolls. It’s a running team, but Ohio is 8-0 when allowing fewer than 160 yards.

The Cowboys have only run for that many or more five times this season.

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Wyoming Will Win The Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl

In Wyoming’s perfect world it runs the ball a gajillion times, controls the clock and the game with its style and defense, and wins 20-12.

It’s 7-0 this season when running 35 times or more and 0-5 when it doesn’t. Ohio is 6-0 when teams run fewer than 32 times, and 2-4 when opposing offenses run that much or more.

But it’s not like Wyoming can’t throw, and it’s going to give it a try against the nation’s second-worst pass defense. Everyone but Northern Illinois and Toledo threw for 229 yards or more against the Bobcat secondary, and the only reason those two didn’t was because they ran for well over 230 yards.

This is where QB Andrew Peasley comes in. He can run, and he might need to. For all of the problems, the offensive line is fine, the pass protection is there, and the team wins when Peasley is even slightly strong.

Wyoming is 5-1 when he throws for at least 140 yards.

Why Ohio Will Win

Oh would this be sweet for the Ohio program.

Four times the bridesmaid but never the bride in the MAC Championship, Ohio became known for consistent excellence under Frank Solich, but it could never quite get over the hump and win the thing.

Eastern Michigan and Kent State are the only other MAC programs that haven’t won the championship game yet.

Successor Tim Ablin was supposed to keep it all going, but the 3-9 2021 season and 2-3 start wasn’t exactly confidence-inspiring.

And then it all kicked in.

Ohio is here with a chance at winning its first MAC Championship game because the offense exploded, the passing game was amazing, and the defense made up for a slew of issues with lots and lots of takeaways.

The team is +13 on the year in turnover margin, the running game is good enough to balance things out over the last few weeks, and now it all gets a semi-reeling Toledo team that lost its last two games and three of the last five helped by a whole bunch of turnovers.

They weren’t a problem over the first half of the year, and then things got ugly with six in the loss to Buffalo has part of a run of 16 given up over the last five games.

What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Toledo Will Win

Oh would this be sweet for the Toledo program.

It’s gone 13 seasons without a losing campaign, but there’s always been that one misfire here and there that kept ruining shot after shot at the MAC title. The lone exception was the 2017 MAC Championship under Jason Candle, but that wasn’t the springboard it appeared to be at the time.

Getting it done this time would be a huge moment for Candle. It wouldn’t put him back in the Next Big Thing category of coaches, but it wouldn’t hurt.

After a year with a rough late collapse at San Diego State, a 77-21 loss at Ohio State, and a rocky finishing kick with no consistency whatsoever, this one game would make everything okay.

The big plays are there, but the accuracy with the passing game isn’t. That’s okay. Keep throwing it and eventually everything will open up against the nation’s worst pass defense.

Ohio allows over 300 passing yards per game with 200 or more in every game but the win over Northern Illinois. On the flip side, the Bobcat offense lost heart-and-soul star QB Kurtis Rourke for the season just before the finale. The 196 passing yards last week against Bowling Green were the fewest outside of the blowout loss to Penn State.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Toledo is 1-5 when giving it away multiple times – the lone win over Eastern Michigan was a 27-24 right – and 6-0 when it doesn’t.

Ohio will give up a ton of yards, but it’ll make up for it by generating those two takeaways it’ll need. No, the offense won’t be able to throw like Toledo will, but the running game will get enough to take control when the pass defense needs a break after getting roasted.

By the way, the USA World Cup showdown with The Netherlands should be close to over just as this gets started – unless it goes into extra time. If this gets into a shootout, it’ll be halftime before the fun is over in Doha.

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Just when it seemed like the Falcons were going to fizzle out after a blowout loss to Kent State, they rose up and rocked Toledo last week with a huge day from the passing attack in the 42-35 win.

Matt McDonald threw for 395 yards and four scores with the big plays there for the taking down the field, and now it’s up to the Ohio defense to stop it all.

The Bobcat defense has been a problem, especially against the teams that can throw. The team is 5-0 when allowing fewer than 300 yards and 3-3 when it gives up that many or more, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Ohio Will Win

The Ohio offense is going to roll.

The Bowling Green offense is hit-or-miss. It’s okay overall, but the passing game is hardly consistency with too many short range throws that don’t go anywhere. That wasn’t the case against Toledo, and the Bobcat defense is going to give up big plays, too, but the O should make up for it.

Ohio has won six straight with the most efficient passing game in the MAC averaging over 300 yards per outing, and there aren’t enough mistakes to matter.

Bowling Green could use some takeaways, but Ohio has gone turnover-free six times all year and hasn’t had any real turnover problems.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Okay, so here’s the deal.

Ohio wins the MAC East with a win. Bowling Green wins the MAC East with a win and if Buffalo loses to Kent State. Buffalo – even though the game against Akron last week was cancelled-without-really-being-cancelled wins the division if it beats Kent State and Bowling Green loses this.

Basically, both teams need to try.

Ohio – 5-0 in Athens – will get more out of its offense, and the defense will keep from breaking after a whole lot of bending.

Golfweek’s Best 2022: Top public and private courses in Ohio

Both the top-rated public and private courses in Ohio have a long history of hosting top-tier competitions.

Both the top-rated public-access and private courses in Ohio enjoy a rich history of top competitions.

Firestone Country Club’s South Course, which tops the list for public-access layouts in the state, has hosted three PGA Championships, several PGA Tour events including the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational for many years, and the Senior Players Championship. In large part a private club, Firestone offers tee times to public golfers who book a stay-and-play package. And the South Course isn’t alone, as Firestone’s two other courses also rank among the best public-access layouts in the state.

On the private side, Muirfield Village hosts the annual Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour. Operated by Jack Nicklaus, the club has also hosted the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1992 U.S. Amateur, the 1998 Solheim Cup, the 2013 Presidents Cup an the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur.

Golfweek’s Best offers many lists of course rankings, with that of top public-access courses in each state among the most popular. All the courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time.

Also popular are the Golfweek’s Best rankings of top private courses in each state, and that list for Ohio’s prestigious private offerings is likewise included below.

Why Ohio Will Win

The Bobcats can’t quite lock up the MAC East title with a win, but …

They can realistically lock up the MAC East title with a win. They need to win and Bowling Green has to lose at Toledo. Otherwise it comes down to next week’s matchup between the two for the division.

For now, the high-powered passing game should be enough.

The offense leads the MAC in yards and is second in scoring thanks to the high-powered air show that’s ripping through everyone.

The Ball State pass defense is fine against attacks that don’t throw a ton, but the team is 0-4 against teams that go for 230 yards or more.

Ohio has thrown for over 230 in seven games going 6-1. However …

Bowl Projections

Why Ball State Will Win

Ohio defense, welcome to Mr. Steele.

Carson Steele has the name, the game, and the hair to become a star around the MAC world, running for 1,280 yards and 12 touchdowns with five straight 100-yard games. He’s going to be the workhorse from the start to keep the Bobcat O off the field.

The Ohio run defense has been able to pull off a shocker here and there, but for the most part it gets barreled on.

Ball State relies on Steele to set the tone, is getting a nice year out of the offensive line, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There isn’t enough of a downfield passing game for the Cardinals to keep up.

The other problem is the inability to control the clock. Steele might be a hammer, but Ball State doesn’t do enough to control the tempo. However, Ohio isn’t playing in Peden.

The Bobcats are 5-0 at home, 2-3 away – granted, two of those losses were to Iowa State and Penn State – and this is the final home game of the year for the Cardinals.

Ohio pulls it off, but Ball State makes it a fight.

Ohio vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

The offense continues to be fantastic.

The Bobcats were 2-3 with the season not going anywhere, and then … boom.  The offense that was good over the first month of the season keep the production going, the turnovers chilled out, and the wins started to come.

On a four-game winning streak, Ohio is going bowling and is deep in the mix for the MAC title.

What’s been the real difference? The run defense has stepped it up.

Ohio got run over by Northern Illinois and still won, but for the most part things are a whole lot easier when the D allows fewer than 150 rushing yards – the team is 5-0 when it does that.

However …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Miami University Will Win

Miami can run.

It’s a little bit of a feast-or-famine thing with the RedHawk attack, but for the most part when the offensive line is working, everything else falls into place.

The team is 3-1 when hitting the 200-yard mark, but it doesn’t always commit to the ground game. Either it works or not, and when it does, Miami is great at controlling the clock and relying on its excellent run defense to take care of the rest.

That, and the offense doesn’t beat itself. There’s only been one multiple turnover game this year – and it didn’t matter in a win over Robert Morris. So for MU it needs to …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t turn it over, grind, and keep the Ohio O off the field.

That’s easier said than done.

The only teams that went off on the Ohio run D were Penn State, Kent State with its funky style, and a Northern Illinois O that runs on everyone. On the flip side, the mediocre defense saves itself with takeaways, and it’s not getting those against this RedHawk offense.

Miami needs this to be low scoring in a measured and controlled game. It’ll move the ball as it needs to without getting into a shootout.

Buffalo vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

Buffalo might run for a bajillion yards.

Ohio is a whole lot of fun, it’s a win away from being bowl eligible, and it really, really doesn’t do enough defensively. It’s got the most problems against decent passing teams – UB can throw without a problem – but when the Bull ground attack is working, forget it.

Buffalo has won five straight since an 0-3 start, but the offensive balance is there, getting to 200 yards on the ground is expected, and the O is fantastic at controlling the clock.

It should all work against the nation’s worst defense, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Ohio Will Win

The Bobcat defense hasn’t ben that bad lately.

It got ripped to shreds over the first six weeks, but it held up great against the run against Western Michigan – the six takeaways helped – and it got by Northern Illinois even though the run defense wasn’t great.

All the D has to do is hold serve so the wonderful offense can take over. There aren’t a slew of giveaways, the passing attack should be a lock for close to 250 yards, and there aren’t enough turnovers to matter.

The Bobcats failed to give it away in three of the last four games.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Buffalo has been playing too well on both sides of the ball.

The defense is forcing turnovers in bunches, but in this it’s going to be about the time of possession battle. Every third down stop for UB will be gold. The offense will take over, keep the ball for long periods of time, and grind out a win to keep showing why this might be the best team in the MAC.

Northern Illinois vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Welcome back, Northern Illinois.

The defending MAC champion was having a problem in loss after loss, but just when the season was over, it dropkicked Eastern Michigan 39-10 with 287 yards on the ground to potentially turn everything around.

And now it gets the Ohio defense. It’s the second-worst in the country.

The Bobcats shocked Western Michigan 33-14 with the D showing up, but that was an anomaly. Northern Illinois will be able to hit throws at will against a D allowing QBs to hit 70%, and …

Ohio vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

The offense has been a blast.

The Bobcats are bombing away with one of the nation’s best passing games rolling for almost 1,300 yards over the last three games with nine touchdowns.

The attack is No. 1 in the MAC and 37th in the nation overall, the passing offense is averaging 387 yards per game, and it should all work against a dying Western Michigan team that can’t seem to do anything quite right.

The Broncos aren’t moving the chains, they can’t stop getting hit with flags, and the defense isn’t generating enough pressure to be any sort of a bother for the Bobcats.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Western Michigan Will Win

If the hugely disappointing Bronco offense was ever going to perk up, this would be the game to do it.

Ohio’s defense isn’t stopping anything.

The pass defense is allowing quarterbacks to hit 72% of their passes, it allowed over 1,300 yards in the last three games, and overall it’s dead last in college football by a mile.

Turnovers haven’t been a problem over the last few weeks and the passing game hasn’t been totally awful – it’s just brutally inconsistent. That should change this week, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Western Michigan really keep up the pace? It hasn’t been able to do it so far.

Turnovers were a problem early, and penalties have been a huge issue over the last few games. The defense has been way too leaky and Ohio ‘s offense has been way too explosive, however, it has only gone off against the truly mediocre.

After last week’s ugly loss at home to Eastern Michigan the Broncos find something that works this week in a fun shootout with just enough steady scoring to keep up.
