Ohio State women’s hockey hires former Columbus Bluejackets player

Welcome back! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s hockey program is on top of the world right now after winning two if the last three national titles, and it’s attracting a lot of attention. So much so, that head coach Nadine Muzerall was able to lure former Columbus Bluejackets defenseman James Wisniewski to her staff on Monday.

Wisniewski is a 14-year NHL veteran having spent time not only with the Bluejackets, but also the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, New York Islanders, and Montreal Canadiens. He talleyed a total of 274 points during his career. After his professional hockey career, the Canton, Michigan native spent two-years as an Ohio State voluntary assistant.

“The biggest things I look for in a staff member is loyalty and hard work and I know that James possesses both,” Muzerall said in a program press release. “He’s an exemplary coach because of his knowledge of the game, having played at the level he did both in the pros and for Team USA. He’s not only smart about the game, but he is creative and brings unique concepts to our program. At Ohio State, we have elite standards, and James fits that standard.”

Wisniewski is excited to come back to Columbus and get to work.

“It was such an honor to be part of the Buckeye family four years ago, and I’m excited to rejoin the program in this new role,” Wisniewski said. “It’s been incredible to see what Nadine has done to turn this program around, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to assist her, the rest of the staff and the players in continuing the Buckeyes’ dominance in women’s hockey.”

Ohio State women’s hockey loses national championship game to Wisconsin

Still a good season and one to remember! #GoBucks

Despite a memorable season and a rather easy path into the NCAA Women’ss Hockey Frozen Four, it wasn’t meant to be for the Ohio State women’s hockey team. The Buckeyes fought hard but fell to the Wisconsin Badgers 1-0 in the national title game on Sunday afternoon in Duluth, Minnesota.

The type of game that unfolded wasn’t what one would expect from two high-scoring teams, but Wisconsin used a defensive approach that frustrated Ohio State and didn’t lead to many high-quality scoring chances for the Buckeyes. It was a stark contrast to OSU’s semifinal matchup win against Northeastern when the Buckeyes seemed to camp out in their own offensive end.

For Wisconsin, the chances didn’t come too often either, but the Badgers were able to make good on a quality shot by Kirsten Simms in the slot at 13:28 of the first period to set the tone.

And that would be all of the scoring in the entire game. Ohio State outshot Wisconsin 31-22 for the contest, but couldn’t generate much in sustained offense because of an inability to carry the puck through the neutral zone. Many of the shots were from a distance away from the net or with significant resistance from the Badgers.

Despite the loss, Ohio State still has plenty to be proud of. It was the program’s third-straight trip to the Frozen Four and a season in which the Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 for most of the season. There’s also a first-ever regular-season WCHA championship to remember.

Now, with a veteran nucleus of players moving on from the program, it’ll be interesting to see how OSU turns the page into the future.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey receive No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

Time to make a run for back-to-back national championships! #GoBucks

As expected, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team received the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Women’s Hockey Tournament despite losing the WCHA final. The defending national champions have had one whale of a season, ranked No. 1 for most of the year and following up last season with a regular season WCHA conference title.

The bracket was unveiled on Sunday with OSU hosting as the No. 1 seed in the Columbus region. The tournament starts on March 9, but the Buckeyes get a bye and will begin play on March 11, facing the winner of Quinnipiac and Penn State.

The other No. 1 seeds are Colgate, Minnesota, and Yale in the eleven-team field. The Buckeyes and Goldern Gophers join Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth as teams from the WCHA that got into the field.

Ohio State finished the season with 70 points and a 31-5-2 record. It’ll be looking to embark on a journey it hopes ends with its second-ever national championship.

Ohio State women’s hockey drops WCHA Final Faceoff final to Minnesota

Still a lot to play for! #GoBucks

It looked like the Ohio State women’s hockey team was well on its way to completing the double of winning the regular season and tournament title in the WCHA, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers had other plans.

The two did battle in the WCHA Final Faceoff final on Saturday and the Buckeyes came up on the short end of the hockey stick, losing by a score of 3-1 inside Ridder arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ohio State had an issue getting the puck into the back of the net despite some significant pressure early on against the defense and goaltending of the Golden Gophers. As a result, the Buckeyes fell behind 2-0 before finally getting a tally with just under four minutes left in the second period to make it 2-1. Gabby Rosenthal hustled down the ice to put a rebound back to make things interesting.

Minnesota would answer just 60 seconds later however and took a 3-1 lead into the last period.

Ohio State would sustain pressure multiple times in the third period but Minnesota continued to defend and dump, closing out the game and finishing as WCHA tournament champions.

The Buckeyes will now await their path in the upcoming NCAA Tournament Sunday when the pairings are announced. They will without a doubt be a No. 1 seed and start out their national title defense.

Ohio State women’s hockey advances to WCHA Final Faceoff final

The OSU women’s ice hockey team will be playing for the WCHA tournament championship Saturday! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is looking to double down and add a WCHA Final Faceoff tournament title to its first-ever regular season conference championship. And … after a 2-1 win over Minnesota-Duluth on Friday, the Buckeyes are still on schedule and will advance to the final on Saturday.

It was a hard-fought, tight affair that didn’t see a goal until the second period, with that seal being broken by Ohio State after the Bulldogs’ defense had an attempted clear go off of Brooke Bink’s leg and into the net for a power play goal at 9:11 of the second period. In these types of games when the stakes get higher, it’s the type of goal and bounce that a team sometimes needs. In this case, it resulted in a much-needed 1-0 lead for OSU.

Ohio State would extend the lead to 2-0 when Emma Maltais found the back of the net on another attempted clear right in the slot just over a minute later at 8:08 of the second period.

And that would be enough for the Buckeyes. The defense and goaltending were solid from there on out, giving up just a lone goal with just 2:48 left in the game to make the final score 2-1.

Ohio State will be back at it Saturday night when it faces Minnesota for the WCHA conference title. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.

Ohio State women’s hockey wins National Championship

Ohio State women’s hockey wins National Championship #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes women’s hockey team is bringing home a National Championship trophy after defeating Minnesota Duluth 3-2. The game-winning score game from Kinzie Hauswirth with six minutes and 40-seconds left remaining in the contest and that shot etched her name in history as this marks the first National Championship in Ohio State women’s hockey history.

The Buckeyes finished the historic season with a 32-6 record and head coach Nadine Muzerall has transformed this women’s program into a national force, which isn’t surprising given her impressive resume. I don’t know much about hockey, but this program looks built to last under the guidance of Muzerall.

Ohio State Women’s Hockey to play for national championship

The Ohio State Women’s Hockey Team looks for its first national championship when it takes on Minnesota Duluth today at 4 p.m. #GoBucks

The Ohio State Women’s Hockey team will look to make history Sunday and win its first national championship in program history. The Buckeyes made it to the Frozen Four, which is being played in Happy Valley, and took care of the Yale Bulldogs on Friday night. OSU trailed Yale before rallying for the comeback victory.

The No. 1 seeded Buckeyes will take on the University of Minnesota Duluth today at 4 p.m. ET. Because not many schools have women’s hockey as a collegiate sport, Ohio State and Minnesota Duluth are in the same conference, the WCHA. The teams met four times during the regular season, splitting the series, each with two wins and two losses. They’ll face off one more time for the 2022 national title on the line.

If you want to see the OSU women’s team compete for the championship, you can tune into ESPNU. If you don’t have access to the ESPN family of networks, the game can be live-streamed on GamePass for $7.99.

Ohio State women’s hockey team headed to the Frozen Four

Congrats to the lady Bucks. Off to the Frozen Four!

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is headed to the Women’s Frozen Four, and in the most dramatic of fashions.

The Buckeyes took the ice on Saturday as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and matched off with Quinnipiac on home ice. To say that the game was a battle would be an understatement.

The Bobcats struck first at 8:26 of the first period despite being outshot by Ohio State. It stayed that way until the Buckeyes’ Riley Brengman scored on the power play with just under a minute to play in the opening period to tie things at one goal apiece.

OSU got another goal on the power play early in the second period when Clair DeGeorge lit the lamp just 4:30 in to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the contest. Quinnipiac answered a little later in the period and the teams headed to the second intermission tied at 2-2.

Ohio State would get a one-goal advantage again early in the third period when Sophie Jacques skated into the zone and let go of a wrister that got by the goaltender from the right slot. However, the Bobcats would not go down easily. They tied things up on the power play and with the extra attacker with just a little over a minute left in the game, and off to overtime things went.

The first overtime didn’t result in a goal despite some scoring chances, so off to a second OT for some extra, extra hockey for those in attendance. Then, just under two minutes into the second overtime, DeGeorge struck again on a chip in front of the net that went over the Quinnipiac goaltender’s left shoulder and into the back of the net for the winner.

The Buckeyes will now head to University Park, Pennsylvania, and the campus of Penn State to take part in the Frozen Four with a shot at a national title on the line. OSU will first match up with Yale on Friday. Win that one and the championship game is on Sunday.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey team receives No. 1 seed for upcoming NCAA Tournament

In case this flew under your radar, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is the No. 1 overall seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team was revealed as the overall No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament, a first for the program. Eleven teams made the field, with only the top five selections receiving a seed.

The other four teams that were seeded include Minnesota (2), Northeastern (3), Colgate (4), and Yale (5). The six other programs that made the field are Syracuse, Clarkson, Harvard, Quinnipiac, Minnesota-Duluth, and Wisconsin.

Ohio State will host and play the winner of the regional semifinal on Thursday in the Ohio State Ice Rink between Quinnipiac and Syracuse. The 2022 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four will be hosted by Penn State University at Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pennsylvania, with semifinal games to be broadcast live, Friday, March 18. The national championship game will take place at 4 p.m. Eastern time, Sunday, March 20 on ESPNU.

Congrats to the OSU women’s ice hockey team. We’ll continue to follow the journey from here on out.

Ohio State women’s hockey wins WCHA Tournament championship

Conference champs! #GoBucks

While you were likely wallowing away in another poor outing by the Ohio State basketball team, there was another OSU squad going for a conference title, and this time it was on the ice. The Ohio State women’s hockey team beat No. 1 Minnesota, coming from two goals down to take home the WCHA Tournament crown.

Early on, it looked like the Golden Gophers were well on their way to a coronation of sorts, heading into the third and final period up 2-0. But Ohio State didn’t quit and managed to get its first goal just over three minutes into the third period when Sara Saekkinen lit the lamp to make it 2-1. It stayed that way until a Sophie Jaques tied it 2-2 with 9:34 to play. Both teams then traded some pretty good scoring chances, but the game went into overtime.

Then the drama ensued. Jacques was again the hero in overtime, collecting her own shot on a rebound while on the power play and sneaking it through the Minnesota goaltender for the game-winner, a 3-2 triumph.

The title is the second-ever WCHA championship for the Buckeyes. The ladies also won it back in 2020. Now it’s off to the postseason where Ohio State has a lot of momentum to perhaps make a deep run.
