Ohio State women’s hockey team headed to the Frozen Four

Congrats to the lady Bucks. Off to the Frozen Four!

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is headed to the Women’s Frozen Four, and in the most dramatic of fashions.

The Buckeyes took the ice on Saturday as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and matched off with Quinnipiac on home ice. To say that the game was a battle would be an understatement.

The Bobcats struck first at 8:26 of the first period despite being outshot by Ohio State. It stayed that way until the Buckeyes’ Riley Brengman scored on the power play with just under a minute to play in the opening period to tie things at one goal apiece.

OSU got another goal on the power play early in the second period when Clair DeGeorge lit the lamp just 4:30 in to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the contest. Quinnipiac answered a little later in the period and the teams headed to the second intermission tied at 2-2.

Ohio State would get a one-goal advantage again early in the third period when Sophie Jacques skated into the zone and let go of a wrister that got by the goaltender from the right slot. However, the Bobcats would not go down easily. They tied things up on the power play and with the extra attacker with just a little over a minute left in the game, and off to overtime things went.

The first overtime didn’t result in a goal despite some scoring chances, so off to a second OT for some extra, extra hockey for those in attendance. Then, just under two minutes into the second overtime, DeGeorge struck again on a chip in front of the net that went over the Quinnipiac goaltender’s left shoulder and into the back of the net for the winner.

The Buckeyes will now head to University Park, Pennsylvania, and the campus of Penn State to take part in the Frozen Four with a shot at a national title on the line. OSU will first match up with Yale on Friday. Win that one and the championship game is on Sunday.
