Ohio State football snap counts, handing out grades for win over Tulsa

We hand out grades and show you the snap counts from the win over Tulsa.

The Ohio State football team got back in the win column on Saturday, one week removed from experiencing its first-ever regular-season loss under Ryan Day vs. the Oregon Ducks. But it was far from a masterpiece, as OSU found itself in a Donnybrook all the way into the fourth quarter before pulling away from Tulsa with a couple of late touchdowns.

As we do every week, we reflect back one more time on what we saw from the last game and provide the snap counts and hand out grades for each unit.

The defense is still a work in progress, quarterback play — though solid for the most part — is still inconsistent, and there’s just a bunch of things for this team to still address if it wants to be championship caliber.

But enough about all of that. Here’s where things stand with grades and snap counts for Ohio State’s closer-than-anyone-thought-it would-be win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Watch Cameron Martinez with the dagger INT for a TD #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes struggled with the winless Tulsa Golden Hurricane, but Cameron Martinez and the defense did their part and stepped up to get an interception and return it for a touchdown to give Ohio State fans a respite from having a heart attack.

With just under 2:00 minutes left in the game, Cameron Martinez put the dagger in the Tulsa Golden Hurricane returning the below interception for 61- yards and a touchdown. The Buckeyes took the lead with 41-20 and helped make the final score look much better than it really was.

Now it’s back to film and the drawing board to try and continue to get better in the upcoming weeks.

Five things we think we learned from Ohio State’s win over Tulsa

TreVeyon Henderson, the defense, Tulsa playing above their head, and more. #GoBucks

Ohio State got in the win column after dropping its first regular-season game under Ryan Day last week to Oregon. But it was far from a clinic on how to respond after a loss.

The Buckeyes found themselves in a dog fight throughout the game, even all the way into the fourth quarter before a touchdown on both the offensive side and defensive end provided enough breathing room for Ohio State fans to relax a wee-bit. In the end, it was a “closer than the score indicated” 41-20 win.

Still, though, this team is a work in progress clearly and there are some things that we can take away from this one (we think) and try to move things forward. Some are good, but most involve improvements needed.

Here are five things we think we learned after Ohio State’s win against Tulsa on Saturday afternoon.

NEXT … TreVeyon Henderson is a superstar … now.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson breaks Archie Griffin record for most rushing yards by a freshman

TreVeyon Henderson breaks record held by Archie Griffin since 1972.

We might just be seeing a changing of the guard in the Ohio State backfield. The Buckeyes are blessed with talent upon talent at the running back position, but there is just something different about TreVeyon Henderson.

Henderson has rattled off another long touchdown run for OSU to put the Buckeyes up by two touchdowns once again. This one was a little more special as Henderson just passed Ohio State royalty in the record books with most rushing yards in a single game by a freshman.

Archie Griffen has held that record since 1972 with 239 yards in a single game that came against the North Carolina Tarheels. Early in the fourth quarter, Henderson now has 244 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the day.

Check out the record-breaking run below.

TreVeyon Henderson is a special one folks and it looks like he’s ready to take the mantle right now.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson break off a big run and Ohio State score vs. Tulsa

TreVeyon Henderson was the unexpected starter today and he has not disappointed. The true freshman and No. 1 rated running back in the 2021 recruiting class has 126 yards rushing with two touchdowns against Tulsa so far this afternoon.

Henderson is averaging 7.4 yards per carry which were helped by a 48-yard run where the young back used speed, wiggle, and power to get into the endzone.

So far Henderson has been everything Buckeye fans had hoped for. The scoring scamper has put Ohio State up by two touchdowns early into the third quarter.

Watch the freshman phenom rumble 48-yards for the score below.

The Buckeyes are looking to add on to this score as they can’t afford a close game after last week’s loss to Oregon.

WATCH: Ronnie Hickman get a tipped interception right before halftime vs. Tulsa

Well, Ryan Day promised us some changes on the Ohio State defensive side of the ball. So far, the only noticeable change is that Kerry Coombs is upstairs and secondary coach Matt Barnes is on the sideline. Although, the defense hasn’t broken yet, giving up just six points in the first half.

However, the Buckeyes are still giving up big chunks of yardage through the air and there has been little to no pressure on the quarterback. To be fair, Denzel Burke should have had an interception, but the play was inexplicably overturned.

The OSU sidelines finally had a big play to get excited about right before the half. Tulsa was driving again and had several missed opportunities before Cameron Martinez tipped a pass meant for a Hurricane receiver and right into the hands of Ronnie Hickman.

See the drive-ending interception below.

The Buckeyes enter halftime with a seven-point lead. Needless to say, fans expected a larger margin by this point. Tulsa will have the ball to open the second half.

Ohio State vs. Tulsa three and out halftime review

Can Ohio State turn it on in the second half? Here are three things to ponder at halftime vs. Tulsa. #GoBucks

Well, here we are at halftime of the third game of the 2021 season and the Ohio State Buckeyes are struggling with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. That’s right, the same Tulsa football team that lost to UC-Davis of the FCS level, the Buckeyes are only winning 13-6, with Tula actually scoring first.

I always try to be positive and I thought everyone was being harsh about the Minnesota game, but this team is just not very good right now and it’s painful to watch. This was supposed to be a tune-up game to pad the stats and check out some freshmen, and now I am sweating and scared. There is still time, but, good or bad, here are three things that warrant attention.

Ohio State issues availability report for matchup with Tulsa

Here’s who will not be available for the game against Tulsa. A couple of the listings are surprising. #GoBucks

As they do every week just prior to game time, the fine folks with the Ohio State football team have issued the availability report for the game against Tulsa. We sometimes get surprised by what comes out, and that’s the case here.

Center Harry Miller is still out, and we knew about the season-ending injury to safety Josh Proctor, but it looks like defensive end Zach Harrison will also be unavailable for today’s game. Look for either Jack Sawyer or J.T. Tumioloau to get more action in place of Harrison who has one sack and seven tackles on the year. Surprisingly, linebacker Teradja Mitchell is also a game-time decision, so hold tight on that one as well.

Here is the rest of the availability report.

Game-Time Decision

  • LB Teradja Mitchell

Unavailable

  • WR Kamryn Babb
  • RB Marcus Crowley
  • DE Tyler Friday
  • DE Zach Harrison
  • OL Jakob James
  • BUL Jaylen Johnson
  • OL Trey Leroux
  • LB Mitchell Melton
  • OL Harry Miller
  • DL Noah Potter
  • SAF Josh Proctor
  • OL Ryan Smith
  • OL Toby Wilson

The unavailability of Miller means Luke Wypler will likely get his third-straight start at center. It’ll be interesting to see how Sevyn Banks and others fit into the game plan now with the poor defensive performance against Oregon last weekend.

Ohio State and Tulsa will kick off at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Five bold predictions for Ohio State against Tulsa

We boldly go where we probably shouldn’t and provide you with five stretch predictions for Ohio State vs. Oregon. #GoBucks

Ohio State finally gets a chance to wash the bad taste out of its mouth from the loss to Oregon when it hosts winless Tulsa on Saturday afternoon. The team, coaches, and fanbase are reeling after losing a game in the regular season for the first time since 2018.

And it’s been mostly because of the poor play by the defense that’s left everyone searching for answers. Ryan Day has vowed some changes everywhere from scheme, to personnel, to coaching structure, so it should be interesting to see what unfolds when the Buckeyes are on defense.

But enough of setting things up. Each week we step out on a limb and give you five bold predictions for the upcoming game, and it’s no different here. Here are five a bit off the wall, entertaining, and possible things you might see when Ohio State plays Tulsa Saturday.

Tulsa vs Ohio State: Buckeyes Wire staff predictions

See what our staff predicts Ohio State to do against Tulsa.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off an extremely embarrassing loss to the Oregon Ducks 35-28. Despite Oregon missing their top two defensive stars and the game being in Columbus with a noon kick-off, the Buckeyes failed to take advantage of their home field opportunity.

This week provides Ohio State with an opportunity to bounce back as it will face the 0-2 Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Tulsa has struggled to find any success and even lost to an FCS team in UC Davis in Week 1. The Golden Hurricane is coming off of an impressive close loss to Oklahoma State though, so maybe it has a trick up its sleeve.

Everyone here on staff predicted Ohio State to pluck the feathers of the Ducks and we were all three wrong, but we will see if we can right the ship for Week 3.
