Ryan Day has hilarious comment about Rutgers multiple onside kick formations and attempts

Ohio State coach Ryan Day was asked about the litany of trick plays from Rutgers. Watch his tongue in cheek comment about the onside kicks.

If you watched Ohio State take on Rutgers Saturday night, there’s no doubt your head is still spinning. Not because it was a thing of beauty, but because we may have seen the most trick plays we’ve ever seen unloaded by one team ever in a game.

move over Boise State vs. Oklahoma 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

The reality is that Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano knew that his team had to unload the barrel with everything he had in the playbook to hang with the Buckeyes, and he sure did.

We saw an offensive lineman score a touchdown, a lateral width of the field throwback for a touchdown on a punt return, multiple two-point tries, and several elaborate onside kick attempts.

It’s the latter that got Ohio State head coach Ryan Day talking at the postgame press conference. When asked whether he had seen that many trick plays deployed by one team in a game before, he had a quote of gold.

“No, no that was … especially the onside kicks,” Day said. “It was like a New York sidewalk. They were going back and forth, and back and forth.”

To truly appreciate the moment, you almost have to see his reaction and quick wit response when the topic came up. You can watch below thanks to a snippet we grabbed.

The quote was so true. I’m not sure how the Scarlet Knight packed that many onside kick formations and plays into one gameplan, but you have to tip your cap. I’m still coming to grips with what I saw last night.

Watch what Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said about Ohio State after the game

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano had some pretty complimentary things to say about his team, but also Ohio State in his postgame presser.

It was a tale of two halves in the ‘Shoe Saturday night.

Ohio State jumped on Rutgers early using a dominating defense and explosive offense to score five touchdowns and head into the locker room up 35-7. Once the second half began though, the Scarlet Knights pulled a few rabbits out of their hat, found a slew of kitchen sinks at the Buckeyes and outgained and outscored the Buckeyes 24-14 to make the game more respectable.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano met with the media on a Zoom call after the game to discuss what he saw from his team, and also what he thought of Ohio State.

If you missed any of the comments that were very complimentary of the personnel on the Buckeye sideline, you can listen to them below in the YouTube video shared by Rutgers Athletics.

Listen to Schiano talk about his teams fight, how Ohio State is the measuring stick in the league, how great the Buckeye defensive line is, and much more.

Five things we learned in Ohio State’s bizarre win over Rutgers

Ohio State hosted Rutgers and it was a tale of two halves. The Buckeyes won a bizarre game and we’ve got five observations for you.

Ohio State took care of business in a bizarre sort of way against Rutgers. The Buckeyes raced out to a dominating 35-3 lead, then was put off balance by a slew of trick plays by a Rutgers team using all the pages of the playbook.

Each game, we dissect the game and provide you with five things we observed in the game, and for this one, it sure feels a little wacky. In the end, Ohio State won 49-27, but that second half won’t sit well with anyone on the Scarlet and Gray’s sideline.

In the end, it’s a win during a very different, strange, and tragic year, so we’ll continue to forge ahead.

Here are five things we observed in the ‘Shoe on Saturday night.

WATCH: Rutgers dips into bag of tricks again, uses throwback on punt return TD

Rutgers continues to pull out trick plays. Watch as it scores on a wild throwback, long lateral punt return.

Rutgers isn’t pulling any punches against Ohio State. So far, we’ve seen a passing touchdown to an offensive lineman, a couple of two-point tries, a modified statue of liberty play, a couple of onside kick attempts, and now this.

On a punt return after one of the few stops the Scarlet Knights made on the Ohio State offense, the return team threw a pass across the field of play much like switching the field in a soccer match, got it into speedy playmaker Bo Melton who weaved his way through the OSU punt return defense for a 58-yard touchdown.

No, this isn’t Boise State East, but … missile

You have to give credit to the Rutgers coaching staff for emptying the barrel against an Ohio State team it has no business being on the field with. Greg Schiano is trying to set the tone for his team, and he’s doing a very good job of it.

Watch the craziness unfold below.

WATCH: Rutgers uses offensive lineman to trick Ohio State on passing touchdown

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights pulled out the trickeration against Ohio State by sneaking an eligible offensive lineman in for a touchdown.

Sometimes you just have to give the opponent due credit.

Look, Rutgers isn’t going to get back into this game, but at least head coach Greg Schiano is throwing everything and several kitchen sinks into the game plan. One of those was a little trickeration broken out at just the right time.

The Scarlet Knights found themselves deep in Buckeye territory, and on first and goal from the four-yard line, Rutgers snuck offensive lineman Raiqwon O’Neal on the edge as an eligible receiver. However, it went undetected by the Ohio State defense. The result? A four-yard buffet eater touchdown.

Click on the below and watch the Scarlet Knights coaching staff get the best of the Buckeye brain trust, at least in this situation.

Again, nothing but the tip of the cap on this one. The score may be out of hand, but at least the team from Piscataway, New Jersey is still putting up the good fight.

Ohio State dominates Rutgers with a balanced offense and solid defense in first half

Ohio State uses a dominating defense and balanced and explosive offense to dominate Rutgers in the first half.

Ohio State is putting a hurtin’ on the Scarlet Knights as they head into the locker room at halftime up 35-3.

The first thing that stood out from the first thirty minutes was the Buckeyes’ efforts to get the running game going early. Master Teague’s work on the ground loosened things up through the air and set up the bomb to Jamison Williams and others.

On defense, the defensive line got pressure and push early on, which allowed Ohio State to get off the field on that side of the ball and put things out of reach. They defensive line seems to be getting better and better, and that’s bad news for future Buckeye opponents.

It wasn’t all rosy though. We may be nitpicking a wee-bit, but the offensive line seems to be a little lethargic at times. The Rutgers defense brought pressure and forced the unit into some missed assignments and slow blocks. That might be fine against a rebuilding program, but gainst better teams, it could be the difference between moving on and falling just short of some pretty lofty goals.

For now though, Ohio State has looked fantastic and you have to think Ryan Day will reach deep into the depth chart in the second half, especially against his friend Greg Schiano who is prowling the other sideline.

Time to finish strong boys.

WATCH: Ohio State executes a fake punt deep in own territory against Rutgers

Watch as Ohio State running back Steele Chambers takes a direct snap and executes a 38-yard run to put the Buckeyes in prime position.

It may only be a game against Rutgers, but if you let an underdog hand around long enough, the belief can set in, and suddenly, you’ve got a ball game.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day wasn’t having any of that. For those of you old enough to witness a myriad of punting formations from former OSU head coach Jim Tressel, watching Day’s aggressive tendencies has to be a breath of fresh air. Heck, even Urban Meyer has to marvel at how confident and aggressive Day’s play calling is.

It was on display again against the Scarlet Knights. While Ohio State was already up 14-3, it got stopped deep in its own territory early in the second quarter and was staring down the possibility of giving punter Drue Chrisman some air time for once.

But no.

Watch as Day dials up a fake punt and allows running back Steele Chambers to take the snap and ramble 38-yards for an easy first down in Rutgers territory.

If you’re Rutgers, you have to be shaking your head in disbelief. It’s bad enough you have to try and hang with a team as talented as Ohio State. For the Buckeyes to pull this off has to be disheartening.

Watch what Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said about Ohio State prior to the game

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano met with the media this week to discuss Ohio State prior to the game. Watch what he said before the game.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano is coming back to the Horseshoe for the first time since he was an assistant under Urban Meyer. It’ll be a little different this time because he’ll be on the opposing sidelines as a competitor instead of rooting for the team running out of the home tunnel.

There’s no doubt it’ll be a little weird for Schiano, but he’s got a job to do as the new ambassador to the Rutgers program that seems to be buying in early on.

But make no mistake about it. Schiano knows that heading into Ohio Stadium and trying to be competitive against one of the best teams in the country won’t be a walk among the roses.

The Scarlet Knights’ head coach met with this week to discuss his team’s preparation and the challenge of facing Ohio State. In case you missed any of his comments, you can get them all below by clicking on the video shared to Rutgers Athletics YouTube Channel.

Watch the below video and listen to Schiano talk about his time at Ohio State, how talented the Buckeyes are, where he is in the rebuilding process in Piscataway, and much more.

Final thoughts before Ohio State takes on Rutgers

Ohio State and Rutgers are getting ready to do battle in the ‘Shoe and we have some final thoughts and musing prior to the game.

Here we go with week three for Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten football season. In just two weeks we’ve already seen some upsets and surprising teams, but the Buckeyes just keep right on rolling along.

This week brings the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to town, and it’s not expected to be much of a contest. Sure new (kind of) head coach Greg Schiano seems to have already started a culture change in Piscataway, but there’s a big difference between not getting steamrolled and actually being competitive against a team like Ohio State.

So the stage is set. Night will fall, the ‘Shoe will come alive with piped-in crowd noise and music, and Ohio State will do battle with Rutgers in prime time on the Big Ten Network.

As we do every week, here are some final, random, streaming thoughts about a myriad of senseless topics heading into the game.
