Ohio State defensive player-by-player PFF grades for Rutgers game

What does PFF say about each Ohio State defender’s grade for the Rutgers game? #GoBucks

Ohio State moved to 9-0 on the season with a 35-16 win on the road over Rutgers on Saturday.

The Buckeyes went into the halftime break trailing for the first time all season, but a strong second half sparked by a 93-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jordan Hancock, led to a multiple score victory.

Ohio State stuck with its theme of playing bend but don’t break defense. Although Rutgers was able to move the ball at times, the Scarlet Knights were held to just one touchdown on their five trips to red zone.

In this article we dig deeper to break down each defensive position group’s performance using Pro Football Focus grades for each player. Though not the ultimate measuring stick, PFF is a good tool because it grades every player on every play.

[autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] put it’s undefeated record on the line coming into Piscataway, New Jersey on Saturday and came away with a 35-16 victory on the heels of a strong second half.

For the first time this season the Buckeyes trailed at halftime as the Scarlet Knights took a 9-7 lead into the intermission. Ohio State flipped the momentum when a hit from safety Josh Proctor bounced the ball into the arms of cornerback Jordan Hancock, who returned the interception 93-yards for a touchdown.

The Ohio State defense continued with the theme of playing great bend but don’t break defense, as Rutgers tallied 361 yards, but was held to just one touchdown on five red zone trips.

On the offensive side of the ball running back TreVeyon Henderson had another spectacular performance. The junior went for over 200 total yards for the second straight game, as he accounted for 208 of Ohio State’s 328 total yards.

Henderson’s best play of the day came through the air as on a third down early in the fourth quarter he turned a checkdown into an electrifying 65-yard play which set up a Marvin Harrison Jr. touchdown reception three plays later.

Next week, Ohio State is back in Columbus as they will take on Michigan State at 7:30 on NBC next Saturday.

Ohio State wins thriller against Rutgers at the buzzer to open Big Ten play

What a finish! #GoBucks

Well, the bar has been set high for entertainment when it comes to Ohio State basketball games this season. The Buckeyes took it to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights early but had to wrestle away victory from defeat by making a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to head out of the building with a thrilling 67-66 victory thanks to Tanner Holden.

The Buckeyes led by 11 points at one point midway through the first half, but then started to fall into the trap of getting to the wrong spots on the floor on offense and allowing the Rutgers’ defense to start to turn them over. The Scarlet Knights slowly began to whittle the lead down, allowing OSU to only enter halftime up by two points, 31-29.

The second half was played as a nip-and-tuck affair with Rutgers taking a three-point lead late on a couple of free throws, seemingly sealing the game. The Scarlet Knights used the strategy of fouling rather than letting Ohio State shoot a three-pointer, with Bruce Thorton calmly stepping to the line to knock down both. The Buckeyes then fouled with a little over 5 seconds left and Rutgers only converted on 1-of-2 free throws to set up the drama.

Ohio State went the length of the court, almost being pushed out of bounds before a desperate pass found Tanner Holden who bombed away a deep three near the sideline that found the bottom of the bucket for an improbable win.

Zed Key had himself another whale of a game with another double-double, scoring 22 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and showing about a dozen different celebrations with his hands. Freshmen Brice Sensabaugh (13) and Bruce Thorton (10), also scored in double figures.

Ohio State was a monster on the glass, outrebounding a very good and physical Rutgers squad 35-27 to balance out a less-than-stellar shooting effort (46.4%). The Buckeyes turned the ball over 14 times but managed to force Rutgers into 13 of their own.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 7-2 overall and starts out the Big Ten season in the winning column at 1-0. The Buckeyes now get a little break and will next be in action next Saturday against a struggling North Carolina team that started the preseason at No. 1.

WATCH: Ryan Day discusses the win over Rutgers

Watch and listen to what Ryan Day had to say about the win over Rutgers Saturday. #GoBucks

Ohio State continued its impressive play by taking care of Rutgers on Saturday thanks to a punishing running game that controlled the clock and the momentum. It was a little different than what we normally see with quarterback C.J. Stroud taking to the air to put up gobs of yards and touchdowns.

Ryan Day was happy with the result and met with the media afterward to discuss the game and what he saw from his team. If you didn’t catch any of his comments, we have them here thanks to the Ohio State Buckeyes Facebook page.

You can listen to Day discuss the mild dust-up of words between him and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, some injury concerns, Miyan Williams’ big day and more.

Ohio State now turns the page quickly to prepare for its first road trip, to East Lansing, to take on Michigan State on Saturday.

Best photos of Ohio State’s win over Rutgers

Time to look at some of the best photos from Ohio State’s win over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team continues to impress week by week. Play may have been a little sketchy offensively against Notre Dame in Week 1, but since then, the Buckeye offense has been about as explosive as you’ll find in the country, doing even without a couple of its best offensive players because of injury.

The latest evidence that OSU is steaming toward all of its goals was a 49-10 drubbing of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday. It was a game OSU controlled shortly after a muffed punt basically gift-wrapped the Scarlet Knights a 7-0 lead. From there, it was all scarlet and gray.

The action from the game was captured by USA TODAY Sports photographers, and we like to bring you some of the best still images from the game each week, and we’re here to do that again.

Here are some of the best photos from Ohio State football’s impressive win against Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

Five things we think we learned from Ohio State football’s win over Rutgers

We picked out five things we think we learned from Ohio State’s win over Rutgers. #GoBucks

Well, that went about as expected. Ohio State was a huge favorite going into the game with Rutgers and it did not disappoint. It was an unusual game plan on offense with the Miyan Williams and running game taking center stage.

When the victory bell rang, the Buckeyes cruised to a 49-10 win and continue on toward all the lofty goals still on the table and achievable.

After every game, we like to reflect on what we just saw and pull out some main observations and points that we feel we think we learned. Here are the five things we think we learned from another impressive showing against Rutgers.

Onward and upward to the next one.

Twitter reacts to Julian Fleming touchdown vs. Rutgers

Twitter reacts to Julian Fleming touchdown #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes are currently beating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 21-7 and although the game has started sloppy for Ohio State, the offense is moving and grooving. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba out another week, the receiving corps has had to step up and the most notable benefactor is Julian Fleming.

Fleming’s Ohio State career took a bit longer to develop than most expected, but he is proving in 2022 why he was such a highly rated recruit. Fleming currently has two receptions on the day for 35 yards and a touchdown. We still have over ten minutes to go in the second quarter and it seems like Fleming is in the groove to have a big day. Check out the highlight below and the social media reaction to it all.
