Ohio State basketball vs. Minnesota: How to watch and listen to the game Thursday

Ohio State heads to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers in “The Barn”. Here’s how to find the game.

Ohio State basketball has been on a bit of a break after Nebraska had to pull out of their scheduled contest due to COVID-19 protocols late last week. The Buckeyes will be back in action as they head to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers in Williams Arena on Thursday.

Minnesota boasts a solid record of 11-5, but land toward the bottom of the Big Ten standings with just a 2-5 record. The Gophers only two wins in the conference have come against Michigan early in the season and a recent defeat of Rutgers.

This will be a good challenge for Chris Holtmann’s squad as Big Ten road games are never easy. If you’re looking for the game, we have everything you need to know to find it.

Snap counts, handing out grades for Ohio State’s win over Minnesota

We hand out grades and give you snap counts for the win against Minnesota.

It may not have been a clinic on how to start fast out of the gate for the Ohio State football team, especially entering halftime down to Minnesota, but the Buckeyes found their way in the second half.

There was big play after big play in the second 30 minutes, and it all resulted in the Buckeyes outscoring the Golden Gophers 35-17 en route to a 45-31 win in game No. 1 for 2021. But there were definitely some things to work on and take away from the contest.

After each Ohio State football game, we hand out grades and take a look at snap counts to reflect on what we watched after pouring back through game film.  Let’s dive into all the fun of what we saw in the Twin Cities on Thursday night.

Ohio State vs. Minnesota most-watched Week 1 FOX college football game ever

That’s a lot of eyeballs on the game last night! Was it more because of Buckeye Nation, or those rooting against Ohio State?

We often hear that Ohio State turns on television sets and streaming devices, and it appears Thursday night was no different. In fact, according to FOX Sports PR, the Buckeyes’ game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers Thursday night was the most-watched Week 1 college football game on FOX ever.

Now, we haven’t gone back to find out what the population consists of, but trust us when we say, that’s impressive. In addition, the 6,295,000 viewers mark the most for any Thursday night college game ever — on any network. The game was also the most-watched telecast of the day on any network.

It also ranked as the 3rd most-streamed regular-season college football game in FOX Sports history. And, at one point — from 9:15-9:30 p.m. EDT — things peaked with around 7,044,000 eyeballs on the contest.

We’re sure a lot of Buckeye Nation had to do with those ratings, but we’re kidding ourselves if we don’t also understand that Minnesota keeping things close had OSU haters tuning in rooting for an OSU loss.

Either way, Ohio State showed a lot of people that it has the ability to come back and win one with a young team, on the road, in a hostile environment.

WATCH: What Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck said about Ohio State postgame

P.J. Fleck was very gracious in defeat. Hear the compliments he gave Ohio State after the game.

The Ohio State football team went to the Twin Cities and took Minnesota’s best shot. The Golden Gophers should get a lot of credit for the toughness and level of competitiveness in what was a pretty cool atmosphere, especially after the shortened COVID-19 season of last year.

Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck expressed a lot of confidence in his guys leading up to the game, and there were definitely some moments that made you realize that this year’s squad in Minneapolis is going to be a tough out for anyone despite the loss.

Fleck met with the media after the game and had some very complimentary things to say about this year’s Ohio State team. In case you missed any of his comments, we’ve got them all for you here thanks to Minnesota football social media.

Ohio State will next be in action against Oregon a week from this coming Saturday at home in the ‘Shoe. It should be a packed house that’s ready to host a national television party.

Ohio State beats Minnesota: Three things we learned

This Buckeye defense needs to improve if they are going to win out. We discuss that and two other points after the win against Minnesota.

The Ohio State football team defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 45-31 and are now undefeated sitting at 1-0 after taking care of its first Big Ten game. Next week Ohio State will get Oregon at home, but before moving on let’s reflect on what we just watched.

To recap C.J. Stroud had 294 yards passing, Miyan Williams had 125 yards rushing and Chris Olave led all receivers with 117 yards receiving. The Buckeyes played well, but let’s talk about the three things that were most noticeable.

It wasn’t all good, but OSU showed the toughness, resiliency, and talent to notch a win on the road in the Big Ten, and that’s never a bad thing.

NEXT … The defensive effort has to be better for Ohio State

WATCH: Haskell Garrett scoops up forced fumble, rumbles for defensive touchdown

We love watching big men rumble for touchdowns! This had to be a dream come true for Haskell Garrett.

Though there’s still plenty of game, Ohio State is beginning to look a little more in control out in Minneapolis. The Buckeyes scored a couple of times on the offensive end through the air, then decided to do the same on the defensive end.

It all started with some pressure from defensive end Zach Harrison who busted around the end and stripped the ball from the hands of Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan. From there, the ball bounced right up to Haskell Garrett who showed us all how big men lumber down the field 32-yards in a dream touchdown scenario.

Watch the sequence of events that gave OSU a 10-point advantage in the second half.

Ohio State can start to breathe a little easier now, but the game is far from over. Minnesota has come to play.

WATCH: Garrett Wilson catches wide open 56-yard touchdown from C.J. Stroud

C.J. Stroud is starting to find his rhythm just a wee bit. #GoBucks

It’s been a see-saw battle so far in Minneapolis between Minnesota and Ohio State. OSU went up 10-0 to start, but the Golden Gophers scored 17 unanswered to take a 17-10 lead into halftime.

Since then, the two teams have traded big plays. The latest came through the air from freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud, his second touchdown pass of the day as he hit a wide-open Garrett Wilson for a 56-yard score to give the Buckeyes a 24-21 lead.

Take a look at some great patience and a soft throw right into the breadbasket of Wilson who ran an excellent route to gain separation from the Golden Gopher defender.

There’s still a long way to go at Huntington Bank Stadium, but Ohio State is starting to find its way through all the fight Minnesota is putting up.

WATCH: C.J. Stround hits Chris Olave for 38-yard strike vs. Minnesota

C.J. Stroud struggled in the first half but Olave coming out of the 2nd half for a 38-yard score.

Ohio State has been struggling a wee bit on offense against Minnesota, most specifically through the air as freshman C.J. Stroud gets his feet wet as the new starter.

That all changed coming out in the second half though. The Buckeyes got some things working on the ground to loosen up the Golden Gopher defense, then let Stroud hit Olave coming across the field for a 38-yard answer to a troubling first half that saw OSU go into the locker room down 14-10.

It was a much-needed strike for Stroud. He started off the game well but began to misfire on some throws that probably should have been made. Watch as Stroud lets the play develop, hits Olave in stride and lets him do the rest.

Ohio State will need more of this in the second half if it wants to beat back quite the challenge from Minnesota so far.

Three and out Ohio State vs. Minnesota halftime review

Is C.J. Stroud the answer?

Welcome to halftime of the first Ohio State football game. Things are not going very well at halftime in the Twin Cities. The Buckeyes are actually losing to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 14-10, and although I strongly believe our beloved Buckeyes will turn it around in the second half it is still disappointing.

Each game of the 2021 season, we take stock in what has happened through the first half and give you three points and takeaways to ponder. In this one, there’s more bad than good that we’ll dive into.

Let’s get into what transpired in the first half and try to figure out what went wrong. It’s not too late for Ohio State to turn this around, but things will need to be much better in the second half.

NEXT … So, at least there’s that

WATCH: Miyan Williams rips off 72-yard touchdown score vs. Minnesota

Miya Williams scores the first TD in 2021 on a long run!

Ohio State has officially scored its first touchdown of the 2021 season, and it came on an explosive play. After allowing a few first downs on Minnesota’s first drive, the Buckeye defense forced a punt around midfield, and then offense went to work.

OSU gained a first down, then running back Miyan Williams struck on a 72-yard touchdown scamper to put the Buckeyes up 7-0 up in the Twin Cities. It was just the start Ohio State needed as it travels to play a veteran Golden Gophers squad on the road. Also of note, it was Williams getting the call for the first drive instead of the veteran running back Master Teague.

Watch Williams hit the edge and rumble past all the Minnesota defenders to put the Buckeyes up early.

It’s been a great start to the game for the scarlet and gray. Hopefully, we’ll see more of the same to start out the season 1-0. We’ll keep you posted throughout the game.
