Five bold predictions for Ohio State vs. Maryland

We give you five bold predictions for Ohio State vs. Maryland.

It’s time for the next step of the journey for the Ohio State football team and it’s one back at home against the Maryland Terrapins. The Buckeyes looked like a team searching for answers across multiple fronts through the first three games, but the last two contests have shown a lot of improvement.

Each week we stretch things a little and try to reach for some bold predictions going into the game. We’ve been surprisingly right when stepping out on a limb a few times this year, but we’ve also been not so right. After all, they are bold predictions and not the garden variety that anyone can easily shake a stick at.

Time to look into the crystal ball, get the tarot cards out, and consult the magic eight ball for five things that might (but probably won’t) happen for Ohio State against the Maryland Terrapins.

Here we go with another week for the Ohio State football team. The Buckeyes sit at 4-1 and look like a much-improved ball club after the first few weeks of the year with all the youth and uncertainty throughout the roster.

Now, it’s on to another Big Ten game, this OSU’s first conference game of the season at home in the ‘Shoe, and it’s the Maryland Terrapins coming to town. It’s a Terps squad that got bludgeoned and battered last week against Iowa, but otherwise is 4-1 on the season.

As we do with before every game, we’ve asked our writers to opine on what they believe will happen in the game and we’re doing it again before the Week 6 matchup.

Here are our Buckeyes Wire staff predictions for Ohio State vs. Maryland.

How to watch, stream, listen to Ohio State vs. Maryland

Everything you need to know to listen and watch Ohio State football take on the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday.

Ohio State is finally looking like a team that we expected to see at the beginning of the season. I know, I know. Tulane, Akron, and Rutgers are hardly a suitable measuring stick for a team with national championship aspirations, but at least the Buckeyes did exactly what they were supposed to do in the last two weeks.

While we still may not know if the defense has totally fixed its woes, one thing we know for sure is this offense is elite. C.J. Stroud looked like a different quarterback after resting a sore shoulder against Akron. TreVeyon Henderson has been even better than advertised. And Ohio State still has the best receiving unit in the country. The Bucks can score with anyone.

Now Maryland comes to town who just got torched to the tune of 51 points against an Iowa team that won’t be confused with an offensive juggernaut. Yes, the Hawkeye defense set the table with seven turnovers, but if Iowa can put up 51 there’s no telling how much the Buckeye offense might light up the scoreboard.

WATCH: Ohio State football Maryland trailer

The Ohio State trailer for Maryland is up! Watch and experience the adrenaline rush.

When asked about what he liked about his team’s performance on Saturday, Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day kept emphasizing toughness. He felt like his young football squad didn’t display enough of it through the first couple of weeks of the season.

But he saw his quarterback and others work through adversity and situations last weekend as a growth moment, and it’s the one thing Day believes will continue to make his team improve.

That’s the same theme of the latest Ohio State football trailer as well, and we don’t think it’s just a coincidence. The OSU creative team dropped the latest cinematic masterpiece for the Maryland team and it goes through some of the highlights vs. Rutgers last week with Day the tagline, “The toughest team stands tall.”

These are always worth a watch and this one is no different if you are into these sorts of things. If so (heck, even if not), click on the below and get ready to experience an adrenaline rush.

Five reasons Ohio State beats Maryland Saturday

Five reasons the Ohio State #Buckeyes beat the Maryland Saturday. What is your score prediction?

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had another impressive week and this time it was against a Big Ten opponent in the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Ohio State destroyed Rutgers 52-13 and they are looking to carry that momentum against the Maryland Terrapins.

The Buckeyes are currently favored by over three touchdowns and the future looks fairly bleak for Maryland considering their best wide receiver in Dontay Demus has officially been listed as lost for the season. The Terrapins got knocked around by the Iowa Hawkeyes last Friday on national television and it feels like they have accepted that they are not ready to take the next step up in the Big Ten.

In an effort to prep for the game, I wanted to provide five reasons that Ohio State will roll against Maryland.

WATCH: What Maryland head coach Mike Locksley said about Ohio State in weekly press conference

Mike Locksley had some praise for the Ohio State team the Terps are about to see on Saturday.

After administering a public flogging to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Ohio State now looks forward to hosting the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon to try and continue its forward momentum.

Maryland sits at 4-1, but just got the doors blown off of its pride against Iowa last Friday night, also losing its most explosive receiver Dontay Demus to a knee injury for the year. Aside from last week though, the Terps have looked like a pretty competitive bunch and look to bounce back against OSU Saturday.

Head coach Mike Locksley met with the local media over in College Park to preview the matchup and provide a status on his team after the bad-look on Friday. Make no mistake, he knows the challenge ahead traveling to Columbus to take on a Buckeye squad that seems to be coming back to a Buckeye-like level. He had some very complimentary things to say about Ohio State and we’ve got his comments for you thanks to the YouTube channel of the Terrapin Sports Report.

Click on the below and watch and listen to Locksley talk about the talent across the board Ohio State possesses, how impressed he is with quarterback C.J. Stroud, the improvement of OSU’s defense, and more.

Ohio State and Maryland will roll the ball out on the field at Noon EDT on Saturday, with Fox Sports having the call.

WATCH: Ohio State head coach Ryan Day previews Maryland

Watch and listen to Ohio State head coach provide a status of the team and preview Maryland.

Ohio State is beginning to look more like, well — Ohio State. The first three games of the season had fans, media, and coaches wringing their hands trying to figure out why the defense was doing its best impression of a wet paper towel, and why the offense couldn’t finish off drives consistently.

But that’s all starting to round into form over the last couple of weeks. And while beating up on Akron and Rutgers won’t exactly make national headlines, the improvement is obvious, especially when you compare the issues Michigan had in going toe-to-toe with the Scarlet Knights.

Ryan Day likes where his team is trending, but also knows each week is a challenge in a very tough Big Ten. Next up is a 4-1 Maryland team that got run out of the stadium against No. 3 Iowa last weekend. Aside from that though, the Terps have looked competitive.

Day met with the media to preview the matchup and provide his thoughts on the OSU team he’s seeing now and we have the video for you thanks to the fine folks at Ohio State and OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

In it, Day discusses the health of running back TreVeyon Henderson, the talent of wide receiver Chris Olave, the depth of the Big Ten, and much more.

Ohio State will take on Maryland at Noon on Saturday in the ‘Shoe. Fox has the call.

Ohio State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

The Friday night game against Iowa last week didn’t represent Maryland’s best work.

The Terps were stomped 51-14 with little offensive production, too many mistakes, and too much pressing against a team good enough to now be ranked third in the country.

Seven turnovers and ten penalties generally aren’t going to get it done.

However, the passing game should work a whole lot better this week. Yeah, the Buckeyes destroyed Rutgers, but the secondary can be pushed a bit. Tulsa’s Davis Brin put up over 400 yards, and everyone but Akron has hit the 200-yard mark through the air.

Taulia Tagovailoa wasn’t under any real pressure against the Hawkeyes – he was going against a D that’s taking the ball away in bunches. This week should be a 300-yard game as long as the offense can settle down just a bit, and if the Terp pass rush can set an early tone by pressuring CJ Stroud.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Now that’s more like it.

Ohio State has the talent to beat teams 52-13 like it did to Rutgers last Saturday, but now it needs to do it on a consistent basis.

The defense is going to be the defense – it’s just not going to be a brick wall this season. However, it made up for the issues with three key takeaways to turn what should’ve been a tight game into a rout.

Maryland was having a few turnover issues before the seven-giveaway debacle against Iowa – turning it over twice against both Kent State and Illinois – and the defense has only forced three takeaways in the last four games.

More than that, Maryland has yet to deal with any passing games to worry about. That’s about to change, because …

What’s Going To Happen

CJ Stroud has been better than you think.

He’s still learning, and he’s still not quite razor-sharp, but he came back from the week off against Akron to hit 74% of his passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns against Rutgers. In this, he’ll have to keep pressing a bit thanks to his defense that will give up over 400 yards, but he’ll be fine.

The Terps will bounce back a bit. The downfield passing game will do enough to keep up for a while – Maryland will be up in the first quarter – but the Ohio State machine will pull away midway through the second half.

Ohio State vs. Maryland football preview and prediction

Ohio State looks to continue its dominating ways as Maryland prepares to come to town. We’ve got a complete preview and prediction to get you ready.

It took until week five, but Ohio State finally looked like the well-rounded team that we all thought it was going to be. The Buckeyes did look good against Akron, but let’s be honest, it was Akron.

Beating up on Rutgers might not feel all that energizing, but the Scarlet Knights are a much-improved team. Just ask Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan fan base. After the Wolverines squeaked by Greg Schiano’s bunch a week earlier, you would’ve thought Rutgers was the second coming of the Crimson Tide.

I think Buckeye Nation understands that a win over the Scarlet Knights shouldn’t be confused as a program-defining win. However, fans should be encouraged simply because the Bucks did exactly what they were supposed to do, dominate an inferior opponent.

Maryland comes to town next as Ohio State will face another stiff challenge from a much improved Terrapin football team  — aside from the turnover-laden game last week against Iowa.

NEXT … Records and broadcast information

Ohio State loses second-straight, this time to Michigan State. Three takeaways.

Ohio State couldn’t make the plays down the stretch to get another big road win at Michigan State. Here are three takeaways from the game.

We had ourselves a Big Ten Donnybrook in East Lansing tonight. Ohio State and Michigan State played one of those old-fashioned, slug ’em out conference games that others outside the Midwest like to criticize. And yeah, it was ugly, and even so much more so if you are a Buckeye fan because they came out on the losing end 71-67.

The loss most likely not only provides a mortal wound to OSU’s diminishing Big Ten regular-season championship hopes, but also puts a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in jeopardy.

There is a lot to take from this game, and we’ll do our best to unpack it. Here are three takeaways from what we witnessed up in East Lansing Thursday night.
