Maryland vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Maryland’s been on a rough run – it can’t seem to buy too many breaks – but the defense hasn’t been all that bad.

The rebounding at times has been strong, and the three-point defense is solid, and now it all has to come together against a team that should be a tad rusty.

After all of the weather problems over the last week, the Buckeyes haven’t plays since January 30th and haven’t won a game since the 27th. They might be rested, but considering they weren’t hot from the outside over the last few games against Big Ten teams, the Terp defense has to be on from the start.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Maryland is hitting its shots from the field and it’s not enough. It has to be doing everything right on the inside and can’t miss its free throws because the overall scoring punch just isn’t there.

It’s a bit by design – this isn’t a team that’s going to race up and down the court – but the scoring just isn’t there. It’s a struggle to get to 70 – it hasn’t done it more than twice since December.

Ohio State might not have been red hot before the week off, but in general it’s a strong shooting team that can work inside and out. It’s the second-best shooting team in the Big Ten, and it should be able to find ways to get past one of he nation’s best scoring defenses.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has to be patient.

It’s going to want to get up and go against a Terp team that does a whole lot of things right, and that includes keeping games in the 60s and under.

Can the Buckeyes get to 70? Maryland is 0-9 when it doesn’t get to 68 points,  and Ohio State is 11-1 when it scores more than 68.

It’s going to be a fight to get points, but the Buckeyes will go on a little burst in the second half to finally start getting control. Maryland won’t hit its free throws when it counts.

WATCH: Maryland head coach Mike Locksley after loss to Ohio State: ‘We had guys looking like they fell out of airplanes, they were so wide open’

Get a listen to a Mike Locksley quote that’s going viral after his team got embarrassed by Ohio State Saturday. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team ran the Maryland Terrapins off the field in the ‘Shoe on Saturday. It’s true that the Terps have some key injuries, most notably in the secondary and at wide receiver, but we’re sure head coach Mike Locksley expected the next men up to put up a better fight than what he saw.

Still, Locksley took his medicine and met with the media after the game to field questions and to discuss what he saw from the game. As always, we like to follow what the opposing coach says about the Buckeyes after the game, so we have the video and audio of the Maryland head man after the 66-17 beatdown.

And, unlike most opposing coaches, Locksley had none of a desire to compliment Ohio State. He blamed the loss on his own team and at one point even made a backhanded compliment to C.J. Stroud’s performance (passed for over 400 yards) by saying that he simply hit wide-open receivers. Early on in the presser, Locksley also said that “We had guys looking like they fell out of airplanes, they were so wide open.”

Welp. OK. In case you’d like to catch the rest of the press conference, feel free to click on the below and watch the brief press conference in its entirety thanks to the Terrapin Sports Report’s YouTube Channel.

Ohio State now enters its bye-week before it gets back at it against Indiana on the road in a couple of weeks.

Five things we think we learned after Ohio State football’s whitewash of Maryland

Ohio State looked impressive again against Maryland. Here are five things we think we learned from the action Saturday.

If you thought this Ohio State football team was an improving bunch heading into the Maryland team, what it did on Saturday with a 66-17 victory over the Terps only solidified that line of thinking. The Buckeyes rolled up tons of offense, played more than adequate defense, and got a lot of guys in the game to take part in a laser light show in the ‘Shoe for homecoming.

But what can we take away from this game? Was it more about the opponent or more about how this OSU squad is starting to become the team we all that it would be to start the year?

After every game, we go back and try to review five things that stood out as takeaways from the game, and with a bushel of points, touchdowns, and yards, there’s a lot to walk away from with this one as well.

Here are five things we think we learned while watching Ohio State’s impressive win over the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday.

WATCH: C.J. Stroud connects with Chris Olave for unbelievable touchdown catch with defender draped all over

Chris Olave come down with a beautiful TD while a defender is all over him! How much will you miss Olave when he heads to the NFL? #Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes are pouring it on the Maryland Terrapins and are currently beating the Big ten foe to the tune of 49-10. The passing game has looked downright outrageous for the Buckeyes with C.J. Stroud leading the way, clearly as healthy as a horse and ready to rock and roll. But his hookup with Chris Olave in the second half was something to behold.

Let me paint the picture — it is fourth and one and Ohio State decides to go for it and instead of handing it off to their big sledgehammer in Master Teague or the freshman phenom in TreVeyon Henderson. Instead, the Buckeyes decided to go big or go home. Stroud rips it down the field 30 yards and Chris Olave somehow comes down with it in the end-zone with a defender hanging all over him, pass-interference and all.

Watch below and revel at the mastery of the wide receiver position from one, Mr. Olave:

You may not see a whole lot of this making the national news highlights because of how out of hand the game became, but this is a very underrated catch that showcases the athletic ability and eye-hand coordination from Olave.

WATCH: C.J. Stroud throws absolute dime to Garrett Wilson for touchdown

C.J. Stroud hits Wilson right in stride. Look at this throw. #GoBucks

We’re starting to have a hard time keeping up with the offensive highlights Ohio State continues to show against Maryland, but we’re doing our best. The last one came from the arm of C.J. Stroud once again, his fourth touchdown of the game against the Terrapins.

With the Buckeyes already leading 35-10, they promptly took the first possession of the second half and marched right down the field into Maryland territory. Then, on 2nd and 5 from the 26-yard line, Stroud put a ball right in the breadbasket and on stride to receiver Garrett Wilson who had got a couple of steps of separation from the Terps defender.

Honestly, the throw could not have been any more perfect. Get a look at how accurate the pass is when targeting a 1:1 Wilson over the top of the defense.

Maryland vs. Ohio State halftime review: 3 takeaways

Three Ohio State #Buckeyes half time takeaways!

The Ohio State Buckeyes are taking it to the Maryland Terrapins and are headed to the half with a 35-10 lead. The score may be a little too close for comfort for some despite a 25-point lead, but there is not a ton to nitpick based on what has been happening on the field.

After dominating the Akron Zips two weeks ago and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last week, it looks like the new and improved Ohio State football squad is continuing that dominant momentum against the Maryland Terrapins. Now it should be noted that Maryland is not the strongest opponent, but still, the Buckeyes are on pace to really put the hammer down in the second half.

With all of this positivity, the following are three things we took away from the first half of play.

Next…These Ohio State receivers are INSANE

WATCH: C.J. Stroud hits TreVeyon Henderson for 26-yard pitch and catch

Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud threw his third touchdown pass of the first half vs. Maryland when he found running back TreVeyon Henderson.

Ohio State just keeps on rolling on offense against the Maryland Terrapins in the ‘Shoe Saturday, and the latest is yet another touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud. It’s been an offensive attack that has spread it around so far, and this time, Stroud found running back TreVeyon Henderson for a 26-yard catch and run to paydirt.

Henderson hasn’t wiggled free on the ground as we’ve seen over the last few weeks, but the coaching staff is still finding ways to get him the ball in space out on the outside in the passing game. He has four catches for 67-yards and a touchdown.

Watch as Stroud picks out the correct option by checking down to Henderson and letting him do the rest of the work, dashing to the endzone with bad intentions.

WATCH: Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka returns kickoff 67-yards vs. Maryland

Watch yet another 5-star wide receiver get an explosive play on a kickoff return. #GoBucks

Ohio State has it going against Maryland, and it’s more than just the offense. In fact, the Buckeyes just had an explosive kickoff return midway through the second quarter, and it came from former 5-star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka.

We haven’t seen OSU take too many kicks and return them with the rule change where you can fair catch it, but Egbuka decided to make something happen with this one. He received the kick at the 5-yard line, then read his blocks and weaved through the Terps special teams for a 67-yard return.

If you didn’t get to see it, watch Egbuka work his magic below to put the Ohio State offense in great field position at the Maryland 29. OSU eventually capped it off with a touchdown.

WATCH: C.J. Stroud finds Chris Olave for 36-yard touchdown vs. Maryland

Watch C.J. Stroud anticipate Chris Olave breaking open beautifully on this TD pass. #GoBucks

Ohio State’s offense is at it again against the Maryland Terrapins, and it’s one of the main A-to-B hookups we’ve heard off often this year that did some more damage early in the second quarter.

With the Buckeyes already leading 14-3, the Buckeyes quickly drove down the field again. Then, quarterback C.J. Stroud anticipated Chris Olave breaking free in the secondary beautifully and hit him in stride, wide open for a 36-yard touchdown pass.

Watch as Stroud anticipates the speed and route of Olave coming free in the second level, throws it when he’s even with the coverage, and leads him right into the open towards a touchdown that put OSU up 21-7.

Ohio State is doing whatever it wants on the offensive end early in the game against Maryland. If it continues, this one could get out of hand.

Three reasons Maryland could give Ohio State fits on Saturday

Three things that could keep Maryland in the game on Saturday vs. Ohio State. Can you think of more?

Those responsible for setting the betting lines on these sorts of things don’t expect Maryland to give Ohio State much of a game on Saturday. As it stands, depending on what site is your go-to for the Vegas lines, OSU is favored by about three touchdowns.

It’s all predicated on the Terps receiving a mega toilet swirly at the hands of Iowa last week, in combination with Ohio State knocking the pile of wood that was being chopped out from behind the woodshed against Rutgers.

But prior to last week, we saw an undefeated Maryland team that had been pretty solid with a win against a very competitive West Virginia team already on the season.

So, there are clearly some things there that might give the Terps a chance to make things difficult against the Buckeyes and we’re going to highlight three of them.  On that note, here are three reasons Maryland could pose some issues for Ohio State Saturday at high Noon.
