Top twenty rated Ohio State football defensive recruits of all time

Ohio State football just landed its highest-rated defensive commitment ever in J.T. Tuimoloau. Here are the top 20 overall OSU has nabbed.

In case you haven’t heard, the Ohio State football program technically landed its highest-rated defensive prospect in the history of keeping track of these sorts of things. That’s right, defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau picked the Buckeyes over Oregon, USC, and Washington on Sunday — and all of Buckeye Nation rejoiced.

It got us thinking though. Who are the other highly rated defensive prospects that he passed over on the way to becoming the best? So, we decided to check and share it all with you based on the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The tools haven’t been around that long, and that means we’re not going all the way back to the 70s and 80s — not even the 90s in fact.

Still, you’ll see that there are some pretty big names on the list, and the fact that Tamilauio is ranked ahead of them all should have everyone pretty excited.

So, here it is. The top twenty defensive commitments in the history of tracking and ranking prospects in Ohio State’s recruiting efforts. We count down from twenty to No. 1 Tuimoloau.

BOOM! J.T. Tuimoloau picks Ohio State

J.T. Tuimoloau will finally be announcing his college choice on Sunday. Will Ohio State land the highest-rated defensive commitment it’s ever had?

That BOOM you hear isn’t the sound of fireworks in celebration of Independence Day, but Ohio State landing the highest-rated defensive player in its illustrious history (or at least since people started tracking things of this nature). Buckeye Nation is rejoicing as J.T. Tuimoloau has picked Columbus to call home for the next three to four years.

The announcement came just moments ago as Tuimoloau was joined by his family live on CBSSportsHQ. One of the top-ranked defensive ends in the recruiting class of 2021 will join his new teammates on campus in the coming days.

In what has been a long recruitment, the experts had crystal balled Tuimoloau to Ohio State all along. However, the confidence level was never very high. Alabama seemed like they might sneak in and lure the young man to Tuskaloosa but after a canceled trip, the Tide was out of the race. Then Oregon seemed to be the dark horse favorite as the Ducks got the last chance to impress Tuimoloau and his family but to no avail.

Ultimately, the draw of playing for the scarlet and gray and being taught by the best in the business at developing NFL defensive line talent, Larry Johnson, was too much.

I’m sure Ryan Day and Johnson can’t wait to get Tuimoloau on campus to prepare him for the upcoming season. And I think I speak for all Buckeye fans when I say, we’re excited to see how this young man complements an already talented group on the defensive line.

Welcome home! O-H

Ohio State receiver target Kojo Antwi set to make college decision Monday, July 5

Tracking another blue-chip receiver. Could he add to the already embarrassment of riches at the position for OSU?

The Ohio State football team is hoping to add one more receiver to the class of 2022 and that commitment could come as early as Monday. Kojo Antwi announced via Twitter that he will share his decision at 11 a.m. EDT on July 5.

There are those who wonder how the Buckeyes have room for another receiver in what is already a full room. However, with the expected departures of Chris Olave and Garret Wilson after this season, transfers of Mookie Cooper and Jameson Williams earlier this year, as well as Jaylen Harris and Ellijah Gardiner both no longer on the roster, there is plenty of room for additions.

247Sports seems to be split on which way Antwi will go. The experts are split 50/50 between Ohio State and Antwi’s home state Georgia Bulldogs, with the Buckeyes having a slight advantage. Texas A&M is also still in the mix as well.

With J.T. Tuimoloau set to announce at 4 p.m. EDT today, this could be a huge holiday weekend for Ohio State. The Buckeye coaching staff is hoping for fireworks to start this afternoon and hopefully carry over into tomorrow morning.

Four-star linebacker Shawn Murphy includes Ohio State in top five

Still a long way to go with this recruitment, but the Buckeyes are in the top five. We’ll keep an eye on it all.

The recruiting game never ends at a place like Ohio State. By now, you surely know that everyone is waiting for some pretty big news tomorrow when all-everything 2021 defensive end prospect J.T. Tuimaoloau is scheduled to announce his school of choice between four finalists Ohio State, Oregon, USC, and Washington.

But there are still other things going on. In fact, on Saturday, four-star Virginia product, linebacker Shawn Murphy, announced his top five and included the Buckeyes.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Murphy is ranked as the No. 6 linebacker and 61st overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle. In addition to OSU, Murphy also included Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Penn State.

It must be noted that the language may be significant here. This is a top-five and not a final five meaning it could always change. There is no real timetable that Murphy has communicated so file this away in the wait and see category.

J.T. Tuimoloau set to announce college decision on Sunday, July 4th

J.T. Tuimoloau will finally be announcing his college choice on Sunday. Will Ohio State land the highest-rated defensive commitment it’s ever had?

Ohio State football is looking for a huge BOOM on July 4th this year. Not just an Independence Day celebration with fireworks, but because J.T. Tuimoloau has made his college decision and has set to make his announcement tomorrow.

In what has seemed like a recruitment that has been never-ending, Tuimoloau has taken his time in picking his destination. And rightfully so. After the NCAA had kept extending the dead period due to COVID-19, Tuimoloau and his family stuck to their guns that they wanted to visit the different campuses on his final list.

The No. 3 overall player and No. 2 defensive end in the 2021 class according to 247Sports composite rankings took his official visit to Ohio State earlier in June. Many believed it was down to Alabama and the Buckeyes, but Tuimoloau canceled his trip to Tuscaloosa last minute.

The decision will come down between Ohio State, USC, Oregon, and Washington. Most believe it is a two-horse race between the Buckeyes and the Ducks, but as quiet as he and his family have been, anything can happen.

The announcement will happen live on CBSSportsHQ at 4 p.m. EDT.

Ohio State hopes the fireworks will be lit in their favor in what would be a BOOM for the ages. Should he pick the Buckeyes, Tuimoloau would become the highest-rated defensive player ever to commit to OSU. He would pass current freshman Jack Sawyer. What a pair these two would be for the next three to four years!

We’ll be waiting and watching with the rest of Buckeye Nation tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks commits to Ohio State

BOOM! Ryan Day and company got another big one for the 2022 class.

Ohio State has yet another commitment for the class of 2022 that’s shaping up to be another great one.

Four-star 2022 defensive back Terrance Brooks announced his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes on his Twitter account Wednesday. He makes it fifteen overall commits to the class that is currently ranked as the No. 1 class in the country according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings.

Brooks continues the trend of Texas natives leaving the state to play for Ohio State, and it’s a big one. Already in the 2022 class, the Buckeyes have commitments from Texans Quinn Ewers and Caleb Brown, both five-star prospects. This adds to others that have made the move from the Lone Star state to the Buckeye State in recent years.

Though Brooks isn’t currently rated as a five-star prospect, he’s close. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, he is ranked as the No. 8 cornerback and 58th overall prospect in the entire class.

This is extremely good news for Ryan Day and staff, and now we await the decision of five-star defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau that could come this week as well.

Ohio State in top five for Georgia safety set to announce soon

Tracking another defensive back that could end up in scarlet and gray …

Ohio State has made the final cut for a highly sought safety from the state of Georgia. Jake Pope took his official visit to OSU on June 18, and the Buckeyes are squarely in play for the three-star prospect.

Beyond Ohio State, Pope’s list includes Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Notre Dame. Most notably not making the cut… Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines, who were originally in the safety’s top eight.

Pope made his announcement via his personal Twitter account, and I have to say, the kid looks good in scarlet and gray. At this point, 247Sports has Pope crystal balled to South Bend, however, the confidence level isn’t super high.

Anything can happen when you’re dealing with 17- and 18-year-olds, and it looks like we’ll know this young man’s intentions soon. Adding another quality defensive back would be a nice addition for Kerry Coombs and company.

Ohio State loses out on four-star 2022 offensive lineman

Welp. One got away. Can’t blame a kid for staying home, however.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were in hot pursuit of four-star offensive lineman and the number one player in Wisconsin in the 2022 class, Joe Brunner. Unfortunately for Buckeye nation, the Wisconsin Badgers were the lucky program to catch the white whale, or more appropriately white fish.

This choice should not come as a surprise considering Brunner is from Whitefish Bay, which is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There were still a few people that thought Brunner may spurn his hometown team, but sure enough, he becomes the highest-rated member of the Wisconsin 2022 recruiting class.

When Brunner announced his top three schools, Ohio State made the cut along with Notre Dame and obviously Wisconsin. There was a glimmer of hope for the Buckeyes when Brunner took an official visit to Columbus, but this one will go down as a loss.

Could Ohio State add another top wide receiver to the 2022 class?

Tracking another blue-chip receiver. Could he add to the already embarrassment of riches at the position for OSU?

The Ohio State football team already has an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position. With arguably the best receiving unit in the nation on campus, Brian Hartline has verbals from Caleb Burton, Kaleb Brown, and Kyion Grayes (247 Sports No. 3, No. 5, and No. 21 ranked receivers) in the class of 2022.

But that isn’t stopping the Buckeyes from trying to add more and the next name on the list is Kojo Antwi. Antwi is a Georgia native and is ranked as the No. 16 receiver in the class according to 247 Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot, 1-inch receiver made his way to Columbus for an official visit on June 18 and had a positive experience.

After taking his official visits this summer, Antwi is ready to make a decision and will announce his choice on July 5. It is widely believed to be a two-horse race between Ohio State and Georgia.

My gut tells me that Antwi stays home and goes to Athens, but never underestimate Brian Hartline’s draw. He’s been able to work his magic before.

We’ll find out on July 5 if the OSU wide receiver coach can pull off another heist and steal yet another top-rated receiver.
