Ohio State football jumps to No. 1 in this mainstream rankings

The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Hawkeyes in Week 6, and with some other shaking up, they were the top team in this mainstream media poll.

Ohio State football is among the best college teams in the country, and most polls have the Buckeyes sitting at No. 2 following the unthinkable loss by the former No. 1 overall team, Alabama Crimson Tide, on the road in Week 6.

The Crimson Tide were No. 1 after beating then-No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs the week prior. The Texas Longhorns, in most polls, were No. 2, and in the majority, they moved up to the top spot in the country.

FOX Sports’ analyst RJ Young doesn’t agree though, and he has Ohio State atop the rankings.

“Ohio State became the first team to score on its opening possession against Iowa in two years (Oct. 1, 2022, Michigan). That touchdown came on a 14-yard catch from Emeka Egbuka, who finished with nine catches for 71 yards and three TDs in the win. The Buckeyes are loaded with talent and have earned the right to be here, but now comes a top-five matchup against the Oregon Ducks for Big Ten supremacy and perhaps the No. 1-ranking in the sport going to the winner,” Young wrote.

Ohio State may not have the top spot in the well-known AP Poll, but it does have a chance to stake its claim in Week 7. The 5-0 Buckeyes will visit the No. 3 Oregon Ducks in Eugene, Oregon.

The Saturday evening matchup is primed to be among the best of the season, and it is certainly the signature win this Buckeyes team will be craving. Ohio State beat the Iowa Hawkeyes, a team that has been a top-25 side for parts of the season, at home 35-7.

Joel Klatt releases his way-too-early top teams for 2024

Where does Joel Klatt see Ohio State heading into the 2024 season? #GoBucks

During the regular season, we like to take a look at where some of the top analysts in the country rank the best college teams. And is it ever too early to look to the season ahead? Well … maybe, but that doesn’t keep the talking heads from giving their opinions early and often.

Fox Sports college football analyst, Joel Klatt, is one of those guys we tend to pay attention to. He knows the game and seems to shoot straight with solid insight.

While Ohio State was far from impressive to end the regular season and an ugly loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl left a bad taste in the mouth of Buckeye Nation, there is reason to be optimistic for 2024. With a plethora of talent opting to return for another run and some top transfers out of the portal, the Bucks are national championship or bust.

Several teams were just outside of Klatt’s top teams. These are teams that could make a run, but will most likely need a little extra help. Those teams include the Arizona Wildcats, Clemson Tigers, Colorado Buffalos, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, Missouri Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans.

So, how does Klatt see Ohio State stacking up against the rest of the college football world? Let’s take a look.

Is Ohio State underrated according to most “way-too-early” preseason polls?

A top-5 team underrated? You could say the Buckeyes are

After Ohio State football returned a majority of its big time draft eligible starters then went and added quarterback Will Howard, running back Quinshon Judkins, safety Caleb Downs, and more through the portal and other offseason moves, it may seem like the Buckeyes are being overlooked by some.

247Sports Brad Crawford took a deep dive into those way-too-early rankings, noting that Ohio State had an average ranking of No. 5 in those polls. He believes that the Buckeyes are underrated.

Crawford expects that the Buckeyes will be ranked much higher come August. He went on to say “don’t be surprised if Ohio State and Georgia split the vote in the preseason AP Top 25 in August and the Buckeyes are potentially America’s No. 1”

It’s hard to disagree with Crawford’s assessment. On paper, Ohio State has a roster that looks as deep as any other team in the country. It will get plenty of votes for the top spot before the season starts and being in that top two will bring high expectations. However, the Buckeyes are used to those and will look to end their 10-year national championship drought this coming season.

Week 12 US LBM Coaches Poll released. Ohio State moves up ahead of Michigan game.

Did Ohio State have any movement with the coaches this week? #GoBucks

Another week of the college football season has flown by and with it plenty of action to reflect upon. There’s a pretty significant body of work to judge teams on at this point, and that includes YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes who look to be playing their best ball at the right time.

Every Sunday, the US LBM Coaches Poll is released based on how the coaches that vote judge teams to have performed that week and throughout the college football season, and we just had the latest drop.

Georgia, Michigan, Florida State, Washington, Oregon, Texas and Alabama are among the highest ranked — as you would expect — but how did it all shake out with just one week to go in the regular season?

Here’s a look at the new US LBM Coaches Poll with a look at the top 10 first, followed by the complete and updated poll after Week 12.

Oh, and for Ohio State fans, bring on Michigan week!

Joel Klatt shares his new top 10 after week 10: Where does Ohio State land after win at Rutgers?

Joel Klatt gives his take on who the top 10 are in the land. #GoBucks

Each week we take a look at Joel Klatt’s rankings as he evaluates teams on a weekly basis. While there’s only one poll that matters at this point in the season, the College Football Playoff rankings, it’s still makes for good banter to see how the rest of the country sees things.

Klatt takes a look at games week by week, or at least that’s what he says. He typically does a good job staying objective, but sometimes it feels like there is some bias.

With a few upsets this weekend, the top 10 looks a bit different, but still boasts the usual suspects toward the top such as Ohio State, Michigan and Georgia. Let’s get to what’s rattling around in Klatt’s head after an exciting Week 10 in college football and see what he thinks of the Buckeyes after the win at Rutgers.

Kirk Herbstreit ranks his top six college football teams after Week 8: Is he beginning to believe in Ohio State?

Do you agree with where Herbie has Ohio State in his opinion rankings after last week? #GoBucks

ESPN college football analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit can be a polarizing figure for some Buckeye fans. I never understood it because his job isn’t to be a homer, and if he were, he’d be a punchline akin to Desmond Howard when it comes to Michigan.

Nonetheless, many OSU fans would prefer that the voice of college football take more kindly to his alma mater when it comes to the national narrative. You don’t have to live in Columbus long to know the town is painted scarlet and gray and lives and dies by how well Ohio State does on Saturdays. In fact, in large part, it all led to Herbstreit moving away from Central Ohio.

Still, his opinions matter and are well thought out … and unbiased.

Every week, Herbstreit ranks his top six college football teams and did so again after Week 8. He didn’t have OSU as one of his top College Football Playoff candidates early, but as the season has gone on, it appears he — along with other national analysts — are beginning to appreciate what this Ohio State team is made of.

So what does Herbstreit think of the Buckeyes after the big win over Penn State and the body of work Ryan Day and company have put together after eight weeks of the season?

Here’s how Herbie ranks his top six teams heading into Week 9, one in which Ohio State travels to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers at night.

Joel Klatt re-ranks his top 10: Ohio State moves up after win over Penn State

Another week, another look at where Joel Klatt ranks his top 10 and where Ohio State moved to. #GoBucks

Ohio State continued to march on, passing its second test of the season on Saturday with a win over Penn State.

The Buckeyes put together a defensive performance that squarely puts them in the national title conversation if they weren’t already. The Nittany Lions were averaging over 40 points per game until they ran into the Silver Bullet defense that held them to 12 points and no third down conversions until the final minute of the game.

There are still those in the media and fan base who weren’t pleased with the effort, but it seems at least one person was. Fox Sports analyst, Joel Klatt, was in Ohio Stadium to call the game on Saturday and saw firsthand how dominant this defense was. And Klatt, who knows a thing or two about the game, understands that even if the offense isn’t as explosive as in the past, that defense is good enough to win games.

Last week, Ohio State came in at No. 5 in Klatt’s rankings. With Georgia off this week, Oklahoma squeaking one out over Central Florida, and Michigan once again dominating an inferior opponent in Michigan State, let’s take a look at how the Klatt sees the top 10 this week.

Joel Klatt re-ranks teams after Week 7. Ohio State moves up after dominating Purdue win.

How does Joel Klatt rank the top 10 after Week 7? Where is Ohio State? #GoBucks

Even being short-handed with injuries, Ohio State took care of business and get out of West Lafayette with a dominating win over Purdue. The weather was less than ideal, but the offense was able to get going and even looked respectable on the ground.

With an epic showdown coming against undefeated Penn State this week, Joel Klatt once again shuffled his top teams. As we do each week, we take a look at his list and give our thoughts. Sometimes we agree. Sometimes, not so much.

The usual suspects Georgia, Michigan, Texas and Oklahoma are still at or near the top, but it’s time to find out where Ohio State lands after Week 7 and whether Klatt has had a change of heart about the Buckeyes.

Week 7 US LBM Coaches Poll released. Did Ohio State see any movement after dominating Purdue win?

A look at the updated US LBM Coaches Poll after another wild week, including Ohio Sate’s impressive road win over Purdue. Did OSU move at all? #GoBucks

It was another wild week in college football, and with it, there’s been a bit of a shakeup in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll that was released. In the Big Ten, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State looked dominant once again, but elsewhere, we saw USC get bludgeoned at the hands of Notre Dame, and Washington outlasted Oregon in a game that had some very questionable coaching decisions on both sides.

Alabama escaped against Arkansas despite the national media not really recognizing it, and there were results a plenty across the rest of the country.

A quick look at the calendar tells us that the college football regular season is about halfway through, and that means there’s been some real separation, but there’s also still plenty of games to play.

Here’s how all of the results on the field impacted the release of the US LBM Coaches poll after Week 7 and whether we saw any movement from Ohio State after its impressive road victory over Purdue.

We’ll start with the new top ten and then share the complete poll for your reading pleasure.

Joel Klatt re-ranks his top 10 after Week 6: Where is Ohio State after Maryland win?

How does Joel Klatt see things after week 6?

It was another slow start for Ohio State, albeit against a solid, undefeated Maryland squad. Of course, the Buckeyes overpowered the Terrapins and came out on top by a large margin. Because no one in the national media gave the Terps any respect, (they weren’t ranked in the top 25 but somehow two-loss LSU was), the win didn’t carry as much weight.

But let’s be honest though, this OSU team looks off. Between the offensive line struggles and Kyle McCord underthrowing extremely wide-open receivers, it’s hard to put the Buckeyes in the upper echelon of elite teams. And that seems to be Joel Klatt’s opinion as well.

With Georgia and Michigan looking dominant once again, both have separated themselves from the pack. Let’s take a look at how Klatt sees things after a mediocre performance from Ohio State in his updated weekly rankings.
