Projecting Ohio State football’s way-too-early 2022 defensive depth chart

A look at what the Ohio State defensive depth chart could look like in 2022. #GoBucks

We’ve already gone through the exercise of throwing out our first knee-jerk attempt at projecting the Ohio State football offensive depth chart for 2022, and now we’re running it back and doing the same for the defense.

There are still some unknowns out there, so things are bound to change, but at this point, we have a fairly good idea of who will come back, what kind of gifts and defections the transfer portal is providing, and who might be working their way through injuries as the depth chart is put together for next season.

Remember, this is very, very early, and with a new defensive coordinator and staff members overseeing things, players new and old will have to make impressions to solidify their spots.

Off we go.

Ohio State football 2022 way-too-early projected depth chart, offense

A way-too-early look at what Ohio State football’s offensive depth chart might look like next season. #GoBucks

Ohio State football is now in full offseason mode after the win in the Rose Bowl. And with Georgia finally getting the Alabama monkey off its back on Monday night, the college football season is officially over. We’ve already started looking ahead to 2022, but that’s going to be even more of a focus from now until the fall.

One of the things we try to forecast throughout the offseason is what the OSU two-deep depth chart will look like. We take on the unenviable task of getting a shadow of what that might be right after the season ends, then revise things based on news of transfers, early NFL departures, and competition battles becoming more clear.

So, here’s our first take at what things might look like for Ohio State on the offensive side of the ball as a knee-jerk, pasta against the wall effort as we sit here in mid-January. There’s a lot of unknowns still this early on, so we’ll add and revise the two-deep when more becomes clear.

We’ll also follow up with the defense later in the week. So, off we go.

Ohio State football 2021 projected depth chart, start of fall camp defense

Now that we’ve observed a week of preseason camp, here’s where we see the depth chart on defense and special teams for OSU football.

OK, it’s time again to take a look at the projected depth chart for the Ohio State football team now that we’ve gotten a peek at some things during the first week of fall camp.

We go through this exercise a few times a year as things progress from just after the end of the season as a way-too-early look ahead, into spring ball, and then leading through fall camp with one last projection just before the kick off to the season.

This season is a little different too because there were some late additions to the 2021 class with J.T. Tuimoloau committing late, and with the news that 5-star quarterback Quinn Ewers was reclassifying to the 2021 class and enrolling at OSU a year early.

It’s still early in preseason camp, but we have been able to observe some things, all while taking into account injuries. This could all change as things progress over the next few weeks, but here’s where we see things right now. This is a follow-up to our look at the offense just a few days ago.
